The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. The paper argues that at near peak solar illumination, a system for field deployment at the required sensitivity is viable using only commercial off-the-shelf components.CITATION:Job, A T, Edgar, M L and McAree, P R, 2017. Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

The flotation of fine coal (minus 0.5 mm) often requires the addition of an insoluble hydrocarbon collector to apparently promote the adhesion of coal particles to air bubbles. A series of experiments was conducted using a radiotracer and narrow size fractions of clean coal to determine the effect of particle size distribution, collector addition rate, desliming of feed and emuIisification of collector on the distribution of collector between the different size fractions. The concentration of collector per gram of each size fraction was found to be approximately proportional to (average particle size)-2 except if the collector was emulsified prior to addition, the dependence altered to approximately (average particle size)-1. At the treatment plant of the Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, the zinc concentrates, with water, are pumped out to a more or less level area, and stored in dams to dry by drainage and evaporation.In-the construction of these dams a clay bank is first thrown up around the proposed dam site. The concentrate and water mixture are then run in from the perimeter, the solids being continuously shovelled up to increase the bank height, while the clear water is drained off at the centre and returned to the treatment plant.These dams vary in size up to 57,000 sq. ft. in area; when completed the banks are about 12 it. high, and the capacity for the largest dams is about 350,000 cub. ft., say, 20,000 tons.The survey office is called upon for a monthly survey of these dams, generally three of which are in process of building or refilling. The puggy nature of the material prohibits walking beyond the bank of the dam, therefore the following method of estimating concentrates was evolved. No originality is claimed, but as the need is for a true survey, and the results have shown the accuracy of the method, a description is warranted. The dam site is first laid out into 10-ft. squares with a theodoliteand 150-ft. steel tape, the outside lines being placed about 15 ft. from the clay bank - 15 ft. is the maximum convenient distance from the bank for working with the levelling staff mentioned later.As the dam is rarely rectangular in plan, the outside points pegged out are not always the corner of a square, but are placed to give the greatest convenience in later work, that is to say, there may be triangles and irregular figures. During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. A study of the accessory opaque iron-titanium oxide minerals of the Oiles Complex, central Australia, was an Important complement to an investigation of the magnetic properties of the Complex. These minerals constitute no more than 10 per cent of the rocks sampled, and generally less than 1 per cent of the ultramafic rocks ("magnetite" concentrations were not sampled for magnetic investigation).Titanomagnetite is the main opaque mineral present, although ilmenite exsolution has been widely developed. High-temperature oxidation of these produced mainly titanohematite, pseudobrookite and rutile. Both exsolution and high-temperature oxidation developed along specific crystallographic directions (along {111}), and in Irregular patches. Low-temperature oxidation is generally not well-developed, indicating the small degree of weathering in the rocks sampled.Although the Oiles Complex is layered, no apparent overall preferred orientation of the iron-titanium oxide minerals was observed, other than crystallographically controlled alignment of very fine grains within pyroxene crystals. Other textural features of the opaque oxides are restricted to symplectic intergrowths mainly with the ferromagnesian silicates.

It is a great honour to address our Institute as President, but the choice of a suitable subject was not an easy one. In the past when the presidential address was given at an annual conference the subject usually related to the conference or industry concerned; more recently the subjects have been more philosophical and this is a distinct advantage to me.I appreciate that I am addressing an informed audience and I am sure' that you are well advised in many of the points that I hope to leave with you. Unlike the specialist who gets to know more and more about less and less and eventually knows everything about nothing, I am one of the group who gets to know less and less about more and more and eventually knows nothing about everything.I hope you will appreciate this point whilst you are listening to me.In recent years I have been closely associated with the problem that troubles most governments of our time: the competition of many groups of differing backgrounds for the land that is available to the nation.This is of particular interest to the industry with which we are concerned as it is of critical importance to the discovery and development of future reserves of minerals and metals. Part of my daily task is involved with the administration of legislation for mining operations and the conditions under which such operations may be undertaken, in implementing government policies relating to mining, and in designing and administering legislationdirected to safety and health in mines.Most of our members are involved in exploration or in day-to-day problems associated with the production of minerals or the management of companies in these pursuits and would be aware of many of the conflicting viewpoints on priorities.F. The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017. You may rest assured I will use my best endeavours to promote the interests of the Institute in every way that lies in my power. In reviewing the work of the past year, it is a matter for congratulation to find the Institute in a position at once so healthy and robust, and that notwithstanding the acute depression which has prevailed in the mining industry.Owing to deaths or departures from the colony, the names of six members have disappeared from the roll of membership, but you will be pleaed to learn that several new members have been elected, the register now, showing 56 Members, 25Associates and 2 Students. A complete record of the papers read and the discussions that took place will be found embodied in the splendid volume of Transactions which has just been issued, and which I am sure will be welcomed by mining engineers in all parts of the world.

In a companion paper on current hedging practices in the mining industry (Armstrong et al, 2009) we showed that contrary to popular belief, mining groups are still using financial derivatives to hedge against foreign exchange risk and interest rate risk, and more recently against adverse changes in energy prices, notably the oil price. This paper presents a case study on a hypothetical gold mine to illustrate the impact that hedging policies could have on its profitability by reducing the downside risk due to adverse changes in the exchange rate and increases in fuel prices. The characteristics of the hypothetical mine have been set to reproduce those of a real gold deposit, the Kisladag mine that is currently being exploited by open pit methods in Turkey. This mine was selected because its feasibility study was available to the public. Geostatistical simulations are used to reproduce the inherent uncertainty on the recoverable reserves û stochastic simulations are used to generate the variability of the other three key sources of uncertainty: the gold price, the cost of energy and the exchange rate. A simple strategy based on straightforward vanilla options (puts and calls) was developed for hedging the last two risks, on the assumption that the company sells its production at the prevailing spot price.

Electricity will play a major part in providing energy services in the 21st century. Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), that is accommodating the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, will provide a focus for optimising the use of electrical energy. Environmental externalities may redefine the cost structure of electricity. Strong corporate environmental management will ensure that current environmental objectives are met and that future ones, identified by the ESD process and environmental externalities accounting, can be developed and implemented by receptive business managers. This paper addresses the current environmental issues of electricity production. It outlines a management strategy for the SECV becoming a community leader in protecting the environment. ESD is discussed in terms of using non-renewable resources wisely, extending their availability and putting in place mechanisms which ensure their ultimate substitution by renewable resources and conservation. The paper explores options for dealing with costing environmental externalities, particularly in relation to greenhouse emissions.

Olympic Dam has been investigating mine design options for the South Mine Area (SMA), which will continue using the existing sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method. The SMA is an undeveloped mining area, located south of the existing underground mining areas currently in production at Olympic Dam. The SMA study reached the stage where geotechnical inputs were required for stope design, infrastructure location and ground support forecasts. A large database of geotechnical data was collected to inform open pit designs for the ODX (Olympic Dam expansion) project (resulting from 659 drill holes). This geotechnical data has since been reprocessed to align with design inputs required for the SLOS mining method. The result has been the construction of a preliminary three-dimensional mining rock mass model (MRMM) that has been incorporated into preliminary stope mine design and infrastructure layout assessments, which have taken into account the predicted prevailing ground conditions.As with any model, it is necessary to improve the confidence in its predictability; therefore the model must be calibrated. The preliminary SMA MRMM was no exception. First pass calibration was possible with results from underground geotechnical window mapping from exposed rock mass conditions in the lateral development and surface geotechnical holes for ventilation shafts.The SMA project continues to advance and has started a program of resource drilling. Selected holes have been identified that target data limited areas. This will ensure that the data gaps are infilled in order to maintain the required data density required to improve the model confidence. In addition, further underground window mapping in the SMA will provide ‘mine scale drill hole’ data that can be used to either update the MRMM or as part of planned future calibration. Stope performance data from stopes will provide further valuable data for calibration purposes.The proposed paper will present the process and findings that have been followed in order to establish a well calibrated geotechnical model that can be used with an acceptable level of confidence in the ongoing refinements of the mine design and planning process for the SMA.CITATION:Thin, I, Morizzi, L, Mungur, G and Seymour, C, 2016. Mining education has received almost continuous discussion since its inception and most people engaged in the mining industry and in mining education feel at some time the urge and necessity to express their views. This paper is not a comprehensive survey of past and present practices and accepted principles, but a personal opinion of the form mining education should take at university level. It is expressed because of a dissatisfaction with the existing courses offered to students. It is hoped to provoke discussionand bring forth guidance to those engaged in mining education. After all, students spend four or five years at a university and it is desirable that the graduate should be something more than just those many years older at the end of his course.POST GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTThe first problem confronting the university should, be to discover what the mining industry wants and expects or graduates. This must influence the university course and yet universities have done little to seek this information, and if suggestions have been offered by industry; universities appear to have made little use of them. University mining curricula are basically what they were 50, 100 and even 200 years ago. (See Appendix.) The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

Background The resources of the Gippsland Basin include not only the coal and oil for which it is well known, but also the tourism resource and the quality of life which it offers its residents and visitors. To manage this group of resources requires an understanding and ability to predict the consequences of possible developments. The water of the streams and estuaries as a key component as it is both a resource and the means for transporting wastes from one area to another. To aid in the resource planning process there is a need for models of the estuarine hydraulic processes. This paper describes an appropriate modelling technique. Resource use conflicts may arise from developments in the catchment upstream of the estuarine reach. For example the diversion of water for domestic and industrial use will change the velocity and salinity structure of the downstream estuary. In turn these changes will affect sediment distribution and deposition patterns and may impose stress on the biological communities and ultimately on the fisheries resources and water quality. The manager of an estuarine system may have expertise in ecology, hydraulics or another of the specialist disciplines involved, but commonly will not. The manager will identify needs for resource and development and the broad options required to satisfy them. The manager will use these studies as the basis for his/her selection of the option for execution. Thus a model for'use by the manager of an estuarine system must have the following properties: (i) The model must be sufficiently accurate to throw up all the likely options. (ii) The model must be capable of being run by the manager, interactively, to answer `what if' questions. This requirement implies a simple code andhardware limited to a personal computer or possibly a desk top work station. (iii) The model must be robust so that unrealistic input oes not generate apparently useful output, and no output is generated for cases where the model is not designed to give results. (iv) The model must be capable of being used as part of a modelling system comprising models of all the geographic and demographic components
