Mining operations are continually aiming to reduce operating costs to improve plant profitability. One way in which the Cannington operation sought to achieve this was by increasing the wear life and reducing the energy consumption of their flotation mechanisms. This was made possible using Outotec’s FloatForce mechanism. The FloatForce mechanism has been developed by Outotec over a six year period involving both CFD modelling and rigorous site testing. FloatForce delivers improved air dispersion and cell agitation efficiency; as such it can be operated at lower rotor tip speeds when compared to Outotec’s previous mechanism.Cannington trialled three FloatForce mechanisms in a train of ten OK38 zinc roughers. The mechanisms’ rotational speed was reduced by 10% compared to the previously installed MultiMix mechanisms. The purpose of the trial was to quantify the energy saving and assess whether there was any reduction in plant metallurgical performance.The trial was successful with FloatForce delivering a 17% reduction in power, an improvement in wear and improved recovery. Analysis of pre and post-installation metallurgical accounting data showed the following:The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of zinc to zinc final concentrate of 0.4 – 4.0%*The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of lead to zinc final concentrate of 0.0 – 0.3%*There was no statistically significant change in silver recovery to zinc final concentrate that can be attributed to FloatForce**95% confidence interval (CI) using multiple linear regression models.The Cannington operation is now in the process of further optimizing its power consumption and wear savings by changing the remaining OK38 zinc and lead rougher float cells to FloatForce mechanisms.CITATION:Bird, M, Oats, B and Sganzerla, M, 2015. This paper describes work conducted as part of an overall research project that aims to identify current and emerging trends in the development of automation and remote mining technologies, and to provide an operator-centred perspective to the design and deployment of such systems. More specifically, this paper outlines a research and development process being constructed to examine the issues of the human skills and capabilities required to operate or maintain automated/remote controlled mobile mining equipment. A human factors approach presented here, where the focus is upon designing equipment interfaces to fit operators, rather than purely designing and deploying the equipment based on a technology-centred approach. However, the importance of training to help develop the required skills and capabilities is also emphasised.The work built on a full review of the literature about the effects of automation in mining and elsewhere, extensive interviews with different stakeholders in mining automation and recognised best practice regarding designing for the human element in automated systems. The human element research and development process proposed is in four stages, ranging from understanding the tasks involved in both manual and automated equipment operation through to user trials to ensure that the automated systems are acceptable to operators and are fit for purpose.It is outside the scope of the current paper to present the full data collection described by this four stage process, but an overview of what will be collected is presented. As such, this paper focuses on the broad methods being developed, rather than the specific results to be obtained. The ultimate objective is to apply a broad ‘technology assessment’ approach to the design, deployment and evaluation of automated mining technologies, in particular by considering the user-centred design implications of these technologies.

According to the data provided by the most recent European Survey on Working Conditions, roughly 25 per cent of the European working population is exposed to mechanical vibrations for no less than one quarter of the work shift duration, while around ten per cent are exposed for the entire work shift. The occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV), in particular, represents a major health risk in mining, quarrying and civil excavation activities. In accordance with European Directive 2002/44/EC, the latest version of the Italian law on physical risks has recently confirmed the possibility of using relevant literature data on vibration magnitude in order to evaluate personal occupational exposure (vibration database or data provided by the manufacturer). Still the alternative option, based on field measurements, represents the most appropriated method of risk assessment, as it accounts for the actual operating condition at the workplace; actual operator and vehicle under investigation and specific working cycle. The article discusses the vibration measurements taken on a number of heavy machinery (excavators, loaders, trucks, dumpers, etc) employed for talc extraction in a mine located in Sardinia and the resulting personal exposure for the drivers. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the specifications of ISO 2631-1 and EN 14253.

I have to say that my story is not too much different to many others who grew up and worked in the great mining fields like Broken Hill, Mt Isa, Rosebery, Kalgoorlie or Kambalda and any one of them could have stood up here and spun you a good yarn.What does my paper offer you in this volume? By sharing my experiences I want to encourage you to consider your own experience with leadership, taking on change, learning from and contributing to the development of others.I have been very fortunate to be part of many new innovations into underground mining over the past 40 or so years; most of it with Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia (CRA)/Rio Tinto operations.•From hand-held drills and a homemade single boom Jumbo mounted on an old Airtrak, to the sophisticated twin boom jumbos with high speed drifters all controlled by an on-board computer;•from a Scraper winch and a Wagner 2D loader to fully automated electric LHDs that navigate to the tipple, empty the bucket and return to where they come from;•from hand-held cut-and-fill and timber stoping in Broken Hill to the bulk mining methods of a block cave where at Northparkes we mined more ore in a month than we mined in the total five years of operations at Currawang;•from hand-held scaling and bolting with no skin protection to installing ground support with Jumbos and sophisticated Cable Bolters and the introduction of in cycle shotcrete;•from hand-held ladder rising and shaft sinking to Box Hole rigs, Raise Bore Machines and Blind Hole shaft sinking; and•from Gelignite based AN60 stick explosives, ANFO, fuse firing and half second detonators to Powergel, Emulsions and electronic computer programmed detonators that can somehow be initiated by ‘Blast Ped’ travelling through the rock.

Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. In the last two years the Commission for the Environment has received four Environmental Impact Reports (EIR) for Audit and has been or is involved with at least four environmental impact assessments (EIA) related to mining. The EIRs have included Weavers Coal Mine, the Monowai-Maratoto mining proposal, the Martha Hill mine and the Wainui Road Mill. The EIAs are related mainly to coal fields in the Waikato but also included a further EIA on Martha Hill.

"Modern train load out stations are becoming faster and have the ability to load a 100 wagon train in less than three hours. At 70 metric tonnes per wagon, that is an average fill rate of 2333 t/h and considering the train is continuously moving, the instantaneous feed rate into the wagon is in the region of 4200 t/h.The main feed conveyor that maintains the level in the surge hopper, above the final weigh hopper, operates in excess of 5000 t/h to ensure uninterrupted charging of the weigh hopper to not disrupt the train loading operation.To avoid demurrage costs (a charge by the Rail Operating Company for exceeding the contractually agreed loading time) the train has to be handled speedily and efficiently and spend the absolute minimum time at the loading facility. Everything else has a much lower priority, including sampling.Thermo Fisher Scientific’s brief was an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract to provide a sampling scheme adjacent to the prepurchased and predesigned load-out facility, but which interfaced seamlessly with the loading system of the trains and provided the following: an instantaneous particle size distribution (PSD) result for each truck loaded, and a final PSD for the total train prior to the train leaving the loading facility a crushed (-3 mm) composite sample for chemical analysis for the whole train a composite physical analysis sample for the whole train.The design presented some interesting challenges to our team, but the end result is a system that not only ‘stands alone’ but interfaces seamlessly with the loading system. Alluvial gold mining in New Zealand and in particular on the West Coast underwent a renaissance during the early 1980's. This was based on two main factors: a) the sharp rise in the gold price b) the advent of the hydraulic excavator with which to mine the auriferous gravels. The scale of operations varies considerably. A small operation typically consisting of one or two people using an excavator to feed either a land based or pontoon mounted (floating) gold recovery unit, which will typically feature a rotary screen with or without a tailings stacker with the screened fines < 10 - 15 mm) fed over riflle tables. The largest screening plants of this type are operated by DML Resources in their Arahura and Mikonui mining operations where the plants have the capacity to screen up to 250 m3 of gravel per hour. These plants usually employ jigs and centrifugal concentrators for gold recovery. Unique amongst current operations is the Grey River Dredge, a bucket ladder dredge capable of processing 700 m3 per hour similar to those that operated earlier this century. Gold concentration is by a series of jigs. The number of plants operating in recent times peaked at around 130 in 1987 (coinciding with a nominal average gold price of $751) and since that time has steadily declined to 80 units in 1993 and about 45 - 50 units today. This cycle of rapid expansion and then steady decline has been repeated on the West Coast since the original gold discoveries in the mid nineteenth century.

The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. It is of some interest to note that the Ti02 content as determined by the 34 analysts using unspecified methods ranged from 0-17 per cent to 0·30 per cent. Open pit mining has considerable damaging effects on the environment of the mining region. These harmful influences have to be controlled during mining operation until mine closure. Different sections of mined land, such as; pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined, have to be reclaimed through treatment of environmental pollution and implementation of a permanent post mining land use (PMLU) after mine closure. Implementation of a permanent optimal post mining land use (OPMLU) is one the most decisive criterion which effects on reclamation procedure, mine closure and their costs. Therefore to define ultimate pit limit (UPL), mine closure and reclamation costs should be entered in the calculation iterations same as the other variable costs of the projects. Estimation of closure and reclamation costs of a mining project is carried out based on the attained OPMLU and the specifications of the mine site. In this paper, a model is developed to provide OPMLU for pit area through fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (FMADM) technique. The model was implemented on a hypothetical copper mine in northwest of Iran as a case study. Lumber production was selected as OPMLU for the pit area. It is finally concluded that through the developed model, OPMLU for different sections of mined land in an open pit mine project is defined. Also closure and reclamation costs are estimated based on the defined OPMLU to achieve a more accurate UPL.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

The piezocone penetration test (CPTu) is one of the primary screening tools used by the mining industry to evaluate whether tailings are susceptible to liquefaction (static or cyclic). Liquefaction analysis using the CPTu is influenced by the fines content of the soil, and most CPT screening tools empirically use the behaviour type index (Ic) to correct for fines. The issue with this approach is that such empirical relationships have been developed using data collected from natural soils and their applicability to different tailings deposits needs to be studied. In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning to develop a site-specific model to estimate fines content of tailings using gamma piezocone penetration testing (GCPTu) measurements. The results are then compared to the fines content derived from the soil behavior type index (Ic) proposed by Robertson and Wride (1998). A dataset of paired GCPTu and laboratory results were compiled and a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was employed to calibrate a model to estimate tailings fines content from in-situ GCPTu data. We calibrated GCPTu data to geotechnical 75 μm fines content measured in the laboratory. The geotechnical fines content is the fines content as a percentage of solids. The development dataset was comprised of paired GCPTu-laboratory results collected in 2009-2019 from a mining area with predominately clay mineral and quartz sand tailings. Results show that the developed model predicts the geotechnical 75 μm fines content of the studied deposits with 7.8% error. The Ic based method estimates the fines content with 31% error. Evidently, the Ic method is not applicable to the studied tailings deposits. It is appreciated that many tailings fines do not contain clay, and that the success on this program may not be repeatable everywhere. However, the authors wish to point out that the application of site-specific machine learning algorithms may be used to significantly improve empirical geotechnical parameters.

For the past decade, demand for Australian resources has reached unprecedented levels, thanks mainly to the emerging superpowers of China and India. Meeting demand has meant miners and governments alike have ploughed billions into capital expenditure projects for logistics infrastructure such as roads, rail and ports, to support the ever expanding number of mines and mineral volumes. In more recent times, however, the effect of the global economic crisis has led to a decline in demand for Australian minerals. The downturn has seen companies lay off workers in droves, and delay or cancel expansion projects, in an attempt to preserve cash flow. Whilst the current economic cycle has hit the mining sector hard, it is an opportunity for companies to take stock of their existing operations and plan for the future. As mining companies grapple for scarce capital resources, it is inevitable that industry consolidation will ensue. This presents challenges and opportunities for both buyers and sellers alike, looking to expand operations, or sell off assets to raise cash.

SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE MEDAL TO LAURENCE CHARLES BRODlE-HALL, C.M.G.The Institute Medal is awarded to a select band of people who have rendered great service to the mining industry and the community. Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

The West Coast region of the South Island is situated astride the Pacific û Australian plate boundary zone. The most significant component of this zone is the Alpine Fault. A variety of reconstructions of the pre-Alpine Fault plate tectonic configuration of the New Zealand continental area have been attempted over the past 25 years or so. Most of these have not been closely constrained by a regional compilation of field data related to the age and horizontal displacement history of the Alpine Fault. A model in which the Alpine Fault was initiated no earlier than the interval 18 - 16.5 Ma (B.P.) is proposed, a significantly younger age of inception than has been widely accepted as the onset of dextral displacement along the plate boundary through the South Island. A subsequent history of displacement is presented consistent with the West Coast basin stratigraphy. The alluvial gold content of some parts of the Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerate sequences is also discussed.
