A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. Geochemical projects in progress or recently completed in the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics (BMR) cover a wide range of topics and include research projects, regional studies, and prospecting programmes. However, in these notes emphasis is given to projects which are directly relevant to mineral exploration.FIELD INVESTIGATIONSStream sediment sampling, rock and soil sampling, and geobotanical surveys have been used by the BMR in a number of areas, partly in attempts to locate specific zones of mineralization, and partly to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods under different conditions of climate and topopraphy and in different geological settings.Stream sediment sampling has been most successful in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. For example, in the South Sepik area, zones of disseminated su1phide mineralisation were found to give rise to anomalies with peak values of up to 1,000 p.p.m. copper, compared with background values of about 40 p.p.m. (Dow et al., 1968). By contrast, the results of rather limited work in the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley district of Westen Australia were inconclusive.Rock and soil sampling, on the other hand, was successfully used in a number of areas in Northern Australia, particularly at Rum Jungle and Tennant Creek.Rum Jungle area In the Rum Jungle area, where uranium and base metal mineralization is mainly associated with a Lower Proterozoic black slate sequence, samples, of c-horizon soil or weathered 'rock are generally collectedfrom the bottom of drill holes, usually 15 to 20 ft deep, bored with a power-operated auger.Surface sampling indicates that such a technique would probably have shown up all the major geochemical anomalies delineated by deep sampling, but the latter gives slightly more consistent and slightly

The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop blast designs for the control of fragmentation and rock displacement and the reduction of overall mining costs. This Bureau experiment, a program of 25 reduced-scale blasts conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla's experimental quarry, determined the effects on fragmentation of changes in burden, spacing, explosive diameter, and stemming-explosive length. Combined with previous work at this experimental quarry examining air gap, delay, and decoupling effects, this experiment provided a data base of over 50 shots. The fragmented rock, 1000 to 3000 kg from each 3- to 4-hole blast in the 1 m bench of massive dolomite, was completely screened to assess fragmentation. The explosive used for all the tests was extra dynamite initiated by seismic caps fired from a sequential blasting machine with delays of 5.2- to 13-ms/m of burden. Empirical equations were developed which predicted the effect of shot design parameters on the fragmentation. These formulas predicted the average fragment size of each of the 25-shots to within 13 percent. For spacing to burden ratios of 1, 1.4 and 2, there were optimum burden to explosive diameter ratios (B/de) of 30, 26 and 20, respectively. Decreasing the B/d. ratio beyond these levels resulted in little or no reduction in the average size. For B/de ratios above these levels the average size increased but, at least a 15 percent reduction in the average size results when the shot design parameters are optimized.

IN dealing with this subject the intention is not to write a detailed description of the various methods in vogue on the Kalgoorlie field, but rather to give a brief outline of three of the methods which are most universally in force, and from which, ultimately, a few comparisons may be drawn. The three methods which the writer proposes embodying in this article are known as "The Rill," "The Flatback," and "The Shrinkage." For comparative purposes each method will be applied to a block of ore 500 feet in length, and opened up by levels 200 feet apart."The Rin" System. It is necessary in this system, for facilitating mullocking, to make connections between levels by rising and winzing at about every 100 feet or 150 feet along the orebody. After the leading stope is beaten off for the full length ofthe drive, the level is timbered. Single stulls are put in up to a width of fourteen feet. If the span is too great for stulls, set timbers or saddleback stuUs are used. Stulls are lagged over with 4-in gimlet poles, and wooden chutes are built at intervals of 50-feet. Ore passes are cribbed up through the filling directly above each chute, and are constructed of 7-in. round timber or 9 in x 3 in square timber, the passes measuring 4 ft x 4 ft in the clear.Occasionally a double pass may be carried up, one side serving as a travelling way. Stoping is commenced off the winzes, and rills are gradually formed, one on either end of each winze. The rills are generally at an angle of 37° off the horizontal, this allowing for the boring...

Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

Three computerised sets of minerals information are being developed by New Zealand Geological Survey in co-operation with the Resource Management and Mining group of the Ministry of Energy: 1. Geological Resource Map: a file of information on the location, geology, geochemistry, production, and potential use of individual occurrences of aggregate, mineral, geothermal, coal, oil, and gas resources. The computer program can be used for search and retrieval of information and the production of maps and tables. The data is being published as a series of 1:250 000 maps with accompanying text and tables. 2. To design and operate a successful mine the technical specialists must agree on what is ore, what is not ore, and how quickly the orebody is to be mined and processed. These seemingly simple questions defy easy analysis and can push mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists and others to the limit of their capabilities. The questions are rarely addressed adequately in feasibility studies or in operational planning. To optimise the mine and processing plant requires proper determination of cut-off grades or values, prediction of feed variability on an hourly, daily or longer basis, right-sizing the mining rate for optimum product quality, understanding the cost of capital and the expectations of investors, and many other considerations that involve geology, geotechnical engineering, mining, metallurgy, environmental effects and economics. Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

Drilling in the south of the Rapahoe Sector at Greymouth Coalfield has demonstrated the existence of thick coal seams in the upper Rewanui Member. Seam correlation is handicapped by complex lithostratigraphy and laterally variable geophysical log profiles. An integrated investigation of coal measure stratigraphy, coal petrology, and proximate analyses, suggests a feasible model whereby most of the major seam intersections belong to a single horizon. Coal properties vary laterally in response to original swamp conditions, which are believed to have ranged from well-drained to ponded. A new model of peat accumulation is proposed for the northern Rapahoe Sector, whereby Upper Rewanui peat accumulation occurred on a flood plain between the levees of a major south southwest-flowing fluvial system in the east and the toe of a western alluvial fan.

For more than 15 years after the Northparkes orebodies were first discovered in 1976, the project was delayed by the need to find an economic way of mining the low-grade E26 deposit. The decision to use a low-cost block caving method to mine the orebody was made in the early-1990s; but the project's future did not solidify until 1993 when a radical new approach was adopted which sought to integrate business imperatives with technology and organisation strategies. The approach led to the establishment of a strategic vision which tied together all the components that could have a major impact on the project, to provide a framework for guiding strategic choices. The strategic vision strived to break away from the old rules of how mines are organised and operated; and involved finding imaginative new ways to radically redesign mining processes to achieve quantum leaps in performance.

In presenting this paper may I preface my remarks by recognizing the presence here to-day of the many delegates from the overseas mining communities throughout the world. That is to say - those delegates not representative of Companies resident in Australia. This does not mean that my comments following are directed solely to the Australian exporter - far from it. The Company which I represent is internationally based. The experiences we have had in dealing and negotiating with our good friends the mineral cargo shippers vary very little in any operational area. However for the purposes of this exercise this address is based on some of our experiences within the Australian trade scene with the emphasis on the fact that we believe it has application to all trading areas.

Beach sands on the Morobe coast of New Guinea contain significant amounts of chromite. This chromite, together with the more abundant associated minerals such as olivine, enstatite, tremolite, antigorite and feldspar has been de- rived from rocks of the Papuan Ultramafic Belt and transported to the beaches by three rivers, the Paiawa, the Saia and the Sesimbai. Of the hundreds of samples taken, 26 have been analysed mineralogically and chemically in some detail. On this basis, five groups of samples, four on- shore and one offshore, representing character- istic mineral assemblages, have been recognized. The chromite grains themselves have been exam- ined to determine variations in amount and in the Cr/Fe ratio, since this is of economic importance. Much of the chromite fails to reach a high Cr/Fe ratio as a result of magnetite rims around chromite grains. The precious metal content of the sands is negligible.

Samples weighing O· 2 g are digested with 2 ml of 72 per cent perchloric acid for 2 hr at 180°C, and then diluted to 10 ml. with water. After settling, an aliquot of clear solution is reduced with ascorbic-citric acid, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured molybdenum complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 2 p.p.m. may be analysed at rates up to 150 determinations per day.

In support of the development of its Liberian iron ore project, ArcelorMittal Mining Research and Development (AM Mining R&D) has performed characterisation and beneficiation test work on drill core samples received from the proposed mine area. In addition to this, a sinter feed product was composed by blending and processing the drill cores in order to predict sintering performance of the ore. This article presents the methodology used to prepare the drill core blend for characterisation, as well as describe the sinter pot trial. Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.
