Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for OFHC copper, and for a series of binary solid solutions of high purity copper with zinc, gallium, germanium, arsenic, and silicon, to investigate the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity. The apparatus used was of the torsional pendulum type developed by KeI1 modified so that the specimen and vibrating system could be maintained in a high vacuum. The activation energy for grain boundary relaxation in copper is 33,000 cal per mol. This is considerably less than the activation energy for self-diffusion, in disagreement with Ke's theory2 that the two activation energies should be the same. All the alloying elements increase the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation to approximately 44,000 cal per mol, increasing the grain boundary viscosity at a given temperature. The results are discussed in terms of theories of grain boundary slip put forward by MottQ and by Ke.+ Experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of small amounts of oxygen on the variation of internal friction with temperature for copper. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were designed to investigate the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, using the internal friction method developed by Kel for measuring grain boundary viscosity. It was considered desirable to make the system under investigation as simple as possible by making experiments on a comprehensive series of binary alloys of copper with the elements immediately following it in the periodic table, i.e., zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic. These elements are within the range of favorable size factor for solution in copper, and the systems have been extensively investigated by Hume-Rothery and his co-workers." Later, in order to study the effect of the relative size of the solvent and solute atoms, experiments were made on a series of Cu-Si alloys, since the apparent atomic diameter of silicon when in solution in copper—the diameter necessary to assign to the solute atoms to account for the lattice constant of the solid solutiona—is almost the same as that of the solvent atoms. Preliminary experiments were made to measure the variation of internal friction with temperature for pure copper. Ke made some experiments on copper," but found that the curves obtained were not reproducible in consecutive experiments. The copper was maintained in an argon atmosphere during the experiments but, although he took precautions to exclude oxygen, Ke came to the conclusion that the precautions were not entirely satisfactory, and that the lack of reproducibility must be due to absorption of oxygen by the copper. Experiments have therefore been made to investigate the effect of small amounts of oxygen on the variation of internal friction with temperature for copper. Previous Work Ke made extensive experiments on high purity aluminum and was able to show that the grain boundaries behave viscously at high temperatures. He found that the relative rate of movement of the grains could be expressed as Where v is the velocity of slip, A is the constant, u is the shear stress, H is the activation energy, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. By assuming that the boundary layer was one atom thick, he obtained a value for the viscosity which, when extrapolated to the melting point, gave good agreement with the viscosity of the liquid metal at the melting point. Ke also made experiments on other high purity and commercial purity metals:, and on some alloys." " He came to the conclusion2 that the activation energy for grain boundary slip was the same as for self or volume diffusion and for steady state creep in single crystals. ALTHOUGH many metallurgists know that some pearlitic special steels can be made troostitic, martensitic, and even austenitic, without quenching, and, therefore, without exposing them to the dangers of the quenching-bath, the practical significance of such possibility does not seem to have received the attention it deserves. Let us recall briefly the mechanism of the transformation alluded to. In Fig. 1 (after Guillet) is shown the constitutional diagram of nickel-steel that; is, of alloys of iron, carbon, and nickel. Any steel the composition of which falls within the area LPO is pearlitic after slow cooling; any steel the composition of which is represented by a point within the area MLO is martensitic, and any steel within the area MNO is austenitic. Starting with pearlitic steel, then by increasing the carbon-content or the nickel-content, or both, the metal becomes martensitic and eventually austenitic; that is, its composition crosses first the boundary-line LO and then the line M0-and it remains martensitic or austenitic after slow (air) cooling.1 We have inn this way imparted to the metal without quenching it the properties of hardened carbon-steel. In other words, the steel is now self-hardening. Greater refinement in the construction of the diagram would undoubtedly result in the introduction of troosto-pearlitic, troostitic, and troosto-martensitic zones between the pearlitic and martensitic areas and-of a martenso-austenitic zone between the martensitic and austenitic areas. Fur the purpose of this note, however, the existence of these transition-conditions may be ignored.

MOST of the iron ore smelted in Alabama blast furnaces is mined within Alabama, although deposits in the neighboring States of Georgia and Tennessee may be drawn upon when occasion requires. Of the four commercial kinds of iron ore, the anhydrous ferric oxide, hematite (Fe2O3) ; the hydrous ferric oxide, mostly the type commonly known as limonite (2 Fe2O33H2O) ; the carbonate, siderite (FeCO3) ; and the magnetic oxide, magnetite (Fe:3O4) ; the first two are found in abundance in Alabama, the third in less than commercial quantities, and the fourth only rarely. Both the hematite and the hydroxide are found in somewhat different forms according to their geologic environment. The Red Mountain hematite, of Silurian age, that crops out in well¬defined beds for 1.50 miles northeast-southwest and 40 miles northwest-southeast is the predominant source of ore. Only a small part of this area carries ore of commercial value; Birmingham and Gadsden are now the only centers of production. The ore is of sedimentary origin, probably altered from vast deposits of greensand mixed with calcareous, fossiliferous. marine debris. Other types of hematite not vet mined commercially are in metamorphosed rocks-red ore in slates in Columbiana Mountain and specular hematite (gray ore) in quartzite in the Talladega Hills.

IN the last several years the coal industry has intensified its effort to solve the growing problem of cleaning and recovering fine mesh coals. On one hand there has been increasing civic pressure for cleaner streams, and on the other hand there has been increasing production of fine mesh coal, resulting directly from adoption of the modern mining methods so essential to the economy of the coal mining industry. Cleaning fine coal with the same precision possible with coarser coals is a difficult task, and for coals finer than 200 mesh it has been impractical. Furthermore, the inclusion of -200 mesh material in the final product markedly increases costs of dewatering and thermal drying, which are necessary steps if coal is to meet market requirements. Consequently these extreme fines have generally been wasted. As a result, problems have been created in many districts because there has not been enough area for adequate settling basins.

Introduction THE Atlin Mining District is in the northwest corner of the Province of British Columbia. Ruby Creek, where the operation to be described is situated, is 17 miles east of the town of Atlin and about 18 miles south of the south line of Yukon Territory (Fig. 1). Gold was discovered in the district in January, 1898, and the production to date from placer mines has been $4,518,000, according to the reports of the Minister of Mines for-the province. Geology The essential points in the regional geology are given in the following paragraphs. Long erosion produced a plane-like surface slightly above sea level with a few peaks and ridges.1 A gradual uplift followed and. erosion increased, the streams cut deeper, the cuts so made being afterward increased by glaciation. The ice straightened and planed the slopes of the main valleys and widened and lowered their floors, in some cases flooring the valleys with silt, sand, gravel, and clay. As the glaciers rapidly retreated, lakes were formed.

DURing the past year considerable work dealing with physical properties of cartridge brass was done at the University of Michigan in cooperation with the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army. This paper gives some of the data bearing on the effect of the anneal, previous to the final reduction-or rolling, on the physical properties, particularly the hardness. Various phases of the subject of physical properties of cartridge brass have been presented by different investigators. Mathewson and Phillips1 refer to the work of Grard, in 1909, as the first systematic presentation of the relation between temperature and time of anneal, changing of physical properties and microstructure, and the previous reduction by cold rolling. They discuss the relation between time and temperature of annealand the previous reduction by cold rolling; also the relation between physical properties and grain size of annealed brass. The degree of deformation previous to the annealing was found to determine the temperature at which recrystallization and corresponding changes in physical Properties would take place. relation between grain size and Brinell hardness, found the hardness for low-temperature annealing to be dependent on the previous degree of reduction, while for anneals above a certain temperature the hardness after the anneal was independent of the degree of reduction. Actual differences in hardness, due to the degree of reduction, disappear only on annealing at 600" C. or above; though the differences for metal subjected to different degrees of reduction and annealed at temperatures between 350" and 600" C. were found to be relatively small. A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observation of this property, which often is referred to as "damping. capacity," might be a useful indicator of structural. changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observable. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in fundamental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction os mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is nor well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of itt changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention: The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

APPROXIMATELY 90 per cent of the steel that is melted and refined in the United States and poured into ingots is made in basic open-hearth furnaces, as shown in Table 1-1. The annual ingot capacity of the steel industry reported January 1,1950, by the American Iron and Steel Institute8* was 99,040,160 tons, of which the basic open-hearth process accounted for 85,896,580 tons, 86.7 per cent of the total. The capacity of the individual furnaces varies over a wide range, a large majority falling within limits of 50 to 200 tons (Fig 1-1). Most of the units constructed [ ] since 1942 are in the larger size groups, between 175 and 225 tons capacity.

FUNDAMENTALLY a dredge designed for operating under arctic conditions and particularly when the temperature is below freezing is not greatly different than one for use in more moderate climates. Because of the accumulation of ice it is necessary to design suspension units to carry an increased weight when ice forms on the digging ladder or stacker. Winch room and house must be made with double walls and insulated. The dredge must be heated either by steam or by circulating warm air electrically heated. The stacker must be covered and heated to avoid having the drive units frozen tight. Actually the worst trouble that might develop in a stacker, because of cold weather, is the freezing of spilled material and ice accumulation on the head pulley and the underside of the belt. For this reason, stackers are completely enclosed and the pan kept open to get rid of any spilled material and to prevent overloading. Since the stacker is the most vulnerable place on a dredge in cold weather, heat is turned on there long before it is necessary any other place on the dredge. The principal points of interest in' connection with dredging, under subfreezing conditions, concern the preparation of the ground being dredged and the frozen ponds. In the interior of Alaska, and also in the Yukon territory of Canada, most of the gold bearing gravel deposits are permanently frozen and they are also covered by variable thicknesses of fine grained sediment, locally called muck. The better pay areas in this frozen ground have generally been worked by the earlier miners who sank shafts to bedrock in the frozen ground, then drifted in four directions and dug out the areas between the drifts as they re- treated toward the shaft. They thawed only the area they were excavating, doing so with steam from wood-fired boilers, and hoisted pay gravel to the surface for subsequent washing.

Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

Engineers have long recognized the desirability of correlating the data obtained from small-scale slime-scttling tests with commercial work as carried on in large tanks. This need, though most apparent in designing new installations, frequently arises also in existent plants, since a large range of experimental work can be performed without interfering with regular operation. General Settling Phenomena In order to develop rational methods of laboratory testing, it becomes necessary to study the general phenomena of settling. Since it was desired to give the public the benefit of these methods at as early a date as possible, together with the knowledge of the general principles of slime settling necessary for a clear understanding of the laboratory tests, we have ventured to discuss the subject in so far as brought out by the work which we now have under way. We realize that certain of our preliminary conclusions may be subject to modification, but it seems probable that, with but few exceptions, the general laws enunciated will cover the settling behavior of all pulps encountered in metallurgical plants. However, it must be recognized that there is still a vast amount of work to be done upon certain phases of the subject; therefore, at this time we will attempt only a discussion of the behavior of ore pulps during the process of settling or dewatering, under certain given conditions. The laws and principles controlling these conditions are not fully established, so that a complete discussion of them will not be attempted in this paper. The small amalgamation-test of the laboratory is not always reliable as a basis for important decisions as to the character and commercial treatment of ores. The conditions of continuous practice on a large scale are not always reproduced in the brief laboratory-test. Sometimes such a reproduction would be very difficult, or impracticable; sometimes it is not even attempted, and the test is performed in a rough way, without regard to the effects of small variations in the methods pursued. The aim of a laboratory amalgamation-test is to learn how much of the gold or silver in an ore can be economically recovered by amalgamation on a commercial scale. The yield can be increased, perhaps, by additional chemical treatment or by extreme comminution of the ore; but this might cost more than the value of such increase. Moreover, in practice, other operations often follow amalgamation; and these operations may remedy a defective extraction by amalgamation, more economically than could be done by directly increasing that extraction. The test should be performed, therefore, upon a uniformly-sized material, and under conditions that are precisely known and capable of being exactly duplicated, or purposely modified. The crucial feature of the test is the effectiveness of the contact made between the gold or silver of the ore and the amal-gamating-surfme. This may depend upon the temperature; the duration of contact; its force, due to gravity or impact; the hardness, plasticity or liquidity of the amalgam; the roughness or other quality of the amalgam-surface; the scouring action of the ore upon the amalgam, or the suspension and

THE Pachuca silver district, situated about 100 kilometers northeast of Mexico City (Fig. 1), covers roughly the southeastern half of the Sierra de Pachuca.
