The temperature and pressure dependence of the reaction of tantalum in oxygen were investigated from 500° to 1000°C at pressures from 10 mm Hg to 600 psi total oxygen pressure. Tantalum was found to oxidize linearly under the above conditions. Three distinct regions of temperature dependence were found with different energies of activation. From 500° to 600°C the rate of oxidation of tantalum was found to be essentially independent of the oxygen pressure at the pressure investigated. The oxidation rate increases rapidly with an increase in pressure from 600' to 800°C. The dependence of the oxidation rate on the bulk concentration may be expressed by V = k'?, where k' is the specific rate constant and ?=k1Co2/(l + K1Co2), where k, is the equilibrium constant for the adsorption of oxygen on tantalum. ONLY a limited amount of data has been presented in the literature on the oxidation behavior of tantalum metal. Some values of its oxidation rate were reported in the Corroston Handbook' and by McAdams and Geil.' The first extensive investigation of tantalum was the work of Gulbransen and Andrews." They determined the reaction rates of tantalum in O2 and N2. Their results indicate that this metal follows the parabolic law in the temperature range of 250" to 450°C in O2 at pressures of 7.6 cm Hg with an activation energy of 27,400 cal per mol. In nitrogen, the metal follows the parabolic law from 500" to 800°C at 7.6 cm pressure. All experimental determinations were of 2 hr or less duration and deviations from the parabolic rate conceivably could occur at longer times. A spectrophotometric study of the oxidation of tantalum by Waber, Sturdy, Wise, and Tipton' indicated good agreement between this method and the microbalance technique. The experiments were conducted in air from 220" to 350°C. The metal was found to follow the logarithmic law up to 320°C and the parabolic law at higher temperatures. The activation energies in the logarithmic region were reported as 12.57 kcal per mol and 12.0 kcal per mol, respectively, for the microgravimetric and spectrophotometric methods. In the parabolic region the activation energy was found to be 27.2 kcal per mol, in good agreement with the value of Gulbransen and Andrews." The present paper is concerned with the behavior of tantalum from 500" to 1000°C in oxygen at pressures ranging from 1/2 to 40.8 atm pressure. Earlier preliminary data by McKewan5,6 indicated the following facts concerning the behavior of tantalum: 1—At temperatures from 500" to 600°C, the metal followed the linear law. 2—At 575°C the rate of oxidation was found to increase with O2 pressure. 3—The Arrhenius plot in this temperature region was nonlinear. The nonlinearity of the Arrhenius plot was indicative of a more complex behavior than originally suspected for this metal.

Book Review MEXICO UNDER CARRANZA. By Thomas E. Gibbon, Los Angeles, California. Doubleday Page and Co., New York, 1919, 270 pp., 711/2 X 5 in. $1.50. A vivid, accurate, convincing summing up of the Mexican problem as it confronts us today, devoid of sensationalism or bigotry. A compelling narrative of the relations of the Carranza Government and our own from Oct. 15, 1915, when it was recognized as the de facto government of Mexico, to the present time. It shows the absolute lack of promises kept or lived up to either with its own people or the United States. This is not done by invective or the indiscriminate use of adjectives but by quoting from the instruments on record on both sides of the case. The driving of the Red Cross out of Mexico, which condemned many of the native peons to starvation, and the interference with the Pershing Punitive Expedition are merely mentioned, but the crying crime against the Mexican people, who have sunk to unbelievable depths of misery obscured, but not exceeded, by the sufferings in Europe, is held up in a clarified light. Two illuminating chapters are devoted to the character and treatment of foreign investments in Mexico, Which are a complete refutation of the common statement that Mexico has been exploited remorselessly by the foreign investor. The conces-sions given by Diaz in the days of his regime most condemned are nowise as large nor the land grants as extensive nor the title so absolute as those granted to the railroad builders of our own transcontinental systems and other of our nationally subsidized works. This is not left to further argument but is settled by quoting the various official instruments and not at all in a tedious way. The author's concluding chapter is a picture of the Mexican people from Aztec times, when they had reached a civilization which gave them a better calendar than the Roman Empire ever had until modern times, to their present unhappy and pitiful condition. He concludes, basing his findings on parallel historical downfalls of a once proud people, that present conditions are the natural result of the absolute domination of an alien minority. He grants, of course, that there are many estimable Latin-Mexicans of integrity, ability and charm, but maintains that the dominant minority has continually degraded in fulfillment of the sociological law that the sure revenge of the servile class is found in the corruption of the master class. The book is replete with historical and literary allusions which, added to the pleasing style of the accomplished author, make fascinating the account of one of the world's great tragedies. Mr. Gibbon is a lawyer who has spent much time in Mexico and shows an understanding of the native people not shared by all writers on the Mexican problem. A distinct addition to all literature on the subject. P. E. B.

Copper-decorated lattice disorders in silicon have been analyzed by electron transmission microscopy, chemical etching, and P-N junction reverse current measurements before and following different gettering treatments. Lattice disorders acted as the nucleating sites for copper precipitation. Copper precipitates in silicon resist chemical etching, absorb electron beams more than silicon, and cause excess reverse currents. Totally gettered disorders will chemically etch rapidly, be transparent to electron beams at extinction contrast, and not contribute to excess reverse currents. Three different gettering procedures were performed to determine the effectiveness of different EXTRANEOUS metal contamination can alter the minority carrier lifetime and resistivity of bulk silicon as well as cause excessive reverse currents in semiconductor devices. Previous workers have reported such activity for gold,1,2 copper,'-* iron,' and rnanganese.2,5 Gettering is a method employed to render these impurities electrically inactive. However, some property of the junction-degrading metals prevents gettering procedures from being wholly reliable. The comparative effectiveness of gettering with different agents has been the topic of earlier publications.2,3,6-11 Two mechanisms for gettering metallic impurities have been proposed: the distribution coefficient mechanism by Thurmond and Logan7 and the compound formation mechanism by Goetzberger and Shockley.2 Both of these models evolved from data gettering mechanisms. First, phosphorus was allowed to enter a protective SiO2 film but remain away from the Si-SiO2 interface to test the effectiveness of the compound formation gettering mechanism. Second, phosphorus was allowed to enter the backside of silicon wafers to test the effectiveness of the lattice strain gettering mechanism. Finally, nickel was diffused into the backside of silicon wafers to test the effectiveness of the distribution coefficient gettering mechanism. In each case, copper precipitates dissolved as a result of the gettering treatment. Tightly packed precipitates will resist gettering more than loosely packed copper precipitates. acquired by the electrical analyses of gettered semiconductor materials. An electrical analysis, however, cannot identify the fate of the gettered metals. The radiotracer technique has recently been applied to determine the redistribution of metals following different gettering treatments.3,9,10 The spatial resolu tion of the radiotracer technique prevented the analysis of metal precipitates which contribute to the excessive reverse currents of P-N junctions. The gettering processes employed by the earlier workers, almost without exception, allowed the gettering agent to enter the silicon lattice. This procedure makes it quite difficult to differentiate between the distribution coefficient and the compound formation mechanisms. The metallographic analysis of gettered copper precipitates discussed in this work supplements the earlier work by obtaining direct evidence of silicon lattice defects decorated with copper before and following different gettering treatments. FOR a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the recrystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would be of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth1 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 655°C'. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutectic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653° PREPARATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ALLOYS Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity aluminum-iron alloy (11.45 pct iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The analyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531). FOR more than 80 years the Bessemer process has depended upon the ability, skill, and judgment of the blower, although as early as the 1860's it was recognized that the process would benefit by some type of instrumental control.1 However, instruments with sufficient recording speeds did not exist, so the end-point determination was always dependent upon the blower's eye. This placed an obstacle in the way of precise experimental work, because of the absence of the necessary records and reference points as reported by Work.2 The use of the photocell provided the instantaneous record of the blow that made this experimental work possible and provided more scientific control for the process as discussed by Graham3' A brief description of the progress of the blow will illustrate the recording function of the instrument. The silicon in the iron is being oxidized during the first minutes of the blow, as pointed out by Henning4 in a table showing the order of metalloid elimination. The product of this oxidation is a solid that remains in the converter, so there is virtually no flame during this part of the blow. This low flame luminosity is illustrated by the flame recording shown in Fig. I, where the silicon blow is plainly marked. The dull flame of the silicon blow gradually gives way to the brilliant carbon flame as the increasing quantities of carbon monoxide formed inside the converter burn to dioxide upon contact with the atmosphere above the vessel. When the carbon reaches some low value under 0.20 per cent, there is insufficient monoxide formed to maintain the dioxide flame, so its intensity drops. Throughout the flame drop carbon continues to burn, until at some value around 0.05 per cent an arrest occurs in the recorded drop. This point has been designated as the end point. The period of time from this end point until the vessel is turned upon its side and blowing has stopped has been called the afterblow. This afterblow is used as a measure of the degree of metal oxidation, and uniformity demands that it be controlled within narrow limits. Iron and blowing conditions are likely to change several times during a turn, necessitating corresponding changes in end-point control. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these changes, the factors that make them necessary, and their bearing upon the quality of steel. CARBON-FEO RELATIONSHIP In the Bessemer process oxidation relationships are precise. Fig. 2 shows a graph of the carbon-FeO relationship. The familiar "bomb-test" method, described by McCutcheon and Rautio,5 was used for obtaining these and all other dissolved FeO values herein reported, all tests being taken from the converter before deoxidation unless otherwise noted. All tests of 0.10 per cent carbon and above were obtained from metal blown for duplexing. McGinley and Woodworth6 reported iron oxide values for blown metal, but their tests were obtained by a different method than were those

IN a previous paper1 from this laboratory, the development of a lead grid method for exploring the distribution of strain and density within metal powder compacts was described, In that work thin lead foil with rectangular holes cut at regular intervals was inserted with the powder fill, the arrangement pressed and then radiographed to permit measurement of the deformation of the lead grid. Densities at each grid element obtained in this manner were plotted as a function of the die dimensions. From such plots it was, found that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side (the top) is at the top outer region and the least dense at the bottom outer region -of the specimen. The axial density maximum occurs more often nearer the bottom than at the top. As a result of such exploratory measurements, it appeared reasonable to conclude that variations in density could be attributed in the main to die wall friction. Thus compacts of large diameter appeared relatively uniform in density except where the die fill had been uneven. Finally it was found that lubrication of the finely finished die cavity contributed more to magnitude and uniformity of density within the compact than interparticle lubrication. Since publication of the above results, it was found that circular-hole grids could be more accurately made and, when deformed within the powder, more readily measured and analyzed. Much of the former work was repeated and new results which include the effect of lubrication, compact height, pressure, speed of pressing and vacuum pressing are reported in the present paper. CIRCULAR-HOLE GRIDS AND ANALYSES OF RADIOGRAPHS Commercial lead sheet 0.008 in. in thickness was used in all the work reported. The 0.0938-in. diam holes were punched in the sheet on 1/8-in, centers to an accuracy of 0.001 in. The finished grid used contained eight or more holes in a row and from I to 24 rows. The lead sheet was clamped between two pairs of brass strips bolted to a small milling machine table which was itself bolted to a bench in correct position near a vise which held the punch. Travel of the lead grid in two dimensions was controlled by two steel lead screws calibrated in 0.001-in. divisions. A stripper plate was used on the punch to avoid distortion of the lead foil. A high carbon-high chromium (chrocar) one-piece steel die was used throughout the work. The die cavity was 1,125 in. in diam and the clearance between plungers and die wall was 0.001 in, The die was also used for pressing from both ends with two long plungers. Finally, lapping of die and plungers gave a surface whose rms value on an Abbot profilometer was 5 micro-in. The die walls and plungers were, except where otherwise noted, lubricated with a stearic acid suspension in benzene. This was put on in multiple layers and allowed to dry before filling the die.

The SO-called gas-tube method as developed by Hare, Peterson and Soler for determining the type and content of gases in molten steel is particularly adapted for determining the hydrogen content in molten steel. The development of this method has been quite completely discussed in a paper published by these co-workers in 1937.' The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to familiarize with this method those who arc not well acquainted with it. The principle of the gas-tube method is as fol1ows: One end of an evacuated gas tube is sealed with a very thin copper disk. when this end of the tube is immersed in a test spoonful of molten steel, the copper disk melts almost immediately, allowing a portion of the steel to be drawn up into the evacuated space. Any dissolved gases, and those produced by reactions between the components of the steel during freezing, are liberated into the unfilled portion of the sampling tube. A blob of steel that forms on the immersed end of the tube after the sample is drawn up seals up the end, making it airtight again. The evolved gases are subsequently drawn out of the gas tube through a suitable valve and analyzed by means of an Orsat apparatus. The volume of the sampling tube is sufficiently large so that a pressure considerably below atmospheric is produced after the gas evolution. The low pressure is necessary to effect a nearly complete removal of gases from the steel. Construction oF Sampling Tube The sampling gas-tube apparatus is illustrated in Fig. I. Seamless S.A.E. tubing used for section A is first cut into 7-ft. lengths. Through cxperiencc it was found necessary to use two sizes of tubing for this part, "is-in. and 3/4-in., respectively. The smaller tubing is generally used on the hotter or lower carbon steels. If the inside wall of the tube A is coated with grease or oil, it should be burned out before being machined as follows: One end is machined on the inside diameter to a depth of 34 in., so as to form a seat for a 7/8-in copper disk, which is stamped out from 0.005 to 0.007-in. thick copper sheet. The other end is machined on the outside diameter to a diameter of 1 5/16 in., to take a small reservoir or trap member I?. About 4 in. below the same end, a 1/2-in. hole is drilled to receive the 1/2-in. copper tubing leading to the large reservoir C. The inside of tube A is then thoroughly cleaned with a round wire brush, such as is generally used to clean out shotgun barrels. It is very important that the surface be absolutely free of rust or any nonmetallic coating. Next, the thin copper disk is soldered in place with low-melting silver solder.

THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the northeasterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. A plan and vertical section of the mineralized zone showing the principal geological features is shown in Figs. I and 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. Impingers TWO types of midget impinger apparatus are used at Climax. The Mine Safety Appliances Company's midget impinger (MSA) and the Climax Molybdenum Company's midget impinger (CMC) (Fig. I). The Leiman Brother's No. 25, positive displacement pump is used in the CMC impinger instead of the four-cylinder radial pump that is used in the MSA impinger. With the MSA apparatus it is possible to obtain the proper vacuum by adjusting the needle valve on the vacuum chamber, while with the CMC impinger the proper vacuum is obtained by varying the rate at which the pump is cranked. The Leiman Brother's No. 25 pump is built to displace 0.1 cu. ft. of air per min. when operated at 145 r.p.m. In the CMC impinger this pump is so geared that the required crank speed is approximately 59 r.p.m. Both types of impinger apparatus are equipped with a water gauge mounted on top of the case and they are calibrated and operated in reference to the gauge. The MSA impinger flasks and nozzles are used with both types. Calibrating Impingers A calibrated precision Sargent wet-test meter (Fig. 2) is used in calibrating the impinger apparatus. The apparatus is set up as for taking a sample in the field, except that the hose from the outlet side of the meter is attached to the impinger nozzle. One revolution of the large hand of the meter indicates 0.1 cu. ft. of air displaced. The impinger pump is cranked for one minute, therefore, at a rate that will cause the large hand of the meter to make one revolution. The gauge reading is noted, then the impinger is cranked at this rate for 10 min. and is checked for error. If the meter indicates that more or less than I cu. ft. of air has been displaced, the impinger must be cranked—ither slower or faster according to the error—for another 10 min. and again checked for error. This operation is repeated until the proper gauge reading for a sampling rate of 0.1 cu. ft. per min. has been determined. This gauge reading is used in all sampling operations until the impinger is again calibrated. An impinger is calibrated at least twice each week. MlCROPROJECTOR A Bausch and Lomb model B micro-projector is used (Fig. 3). It consists of a substantial metal base supporting the light source and a microscope. Illumination is provided by a Bausch and Lomb 4.5-amp. arc lamp with mechanical feed. A glass water cell filled with a heat-absorbing and color-filter solution is placed between the arc lamp and the microscope. Two types of solution have been found satisfactory— a 2 per cent solution of copper sulphate or a 2 per cent solution of picric acid and distilled water. ALTHOUGH the mechanical properties of high-carbon manganese-iron alloys, particularly the Hadfield manganese steels, have been established, the literature discloses discrepancies in the reported properties for the low-carbon alloys. Hadfieldlo summarized the existing data up to 1927, including the investigations of Guillet, Arnold, Strauss, Burgess and Aston, and reported his own values for alloys containing for the most part from 0.06 to 0.15 per cent carbon. He noted: From these comparisons it will be seen that while there is a broad and general agreement as to the character of the alloys at the different manganese percentages, there are disparities in individual cases, especially as regards the degree of toughness or brittleness displayed by an alloy with certain percentages and with particular types of treatment. These differences are not always readily explainable. Ib His data showed that alloys containing 4 to 10 per cent manganese water-quenched from 1000°C. were brittle and hard with maximum brittleness at about 7 per cent. Slight improvement in ductility was obtained with compositions from 10 to 17 per cent manganese. Alloys containing up to 17 per cent manganese slowly cooled rather than quenched from 870°C., he found, were slightly improved in ductility with significant improvement in alloys analyzing 4.1 and 4.8 per cent manganese. Recently Walters, Kramer and Loringa reported mechanical properties for alloys made up from electrolytic manganese and ingot iron and containing from 0.02 to 0.04 per cent carbon. They showed that a tempering treatment at 540°C. (1000°F.) for one hour significantly improved the ductility of compositions ranging from 6.7 to 20.7 per cent manganese. The differences of these compared with Hadfield&apos;s results they considered to originate in this tempering treatment plus the fact that Hadfield&apos;s alloys contained higher carbon and phosphorus (0.06 to 0.15 per cent C; 0.06 to 0.07 per cent P compared with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent C, <0.001 per cent P). In this paper it is shown that of the low- carbon alloys (0.02 to 0.03 per cent) containing from 3.3 to 21.5 per cent manganese moderately or rapidly quenched from 1000°C. some are brittle or ductile, depending on presence or absence of hydrogen. Hydrogen is readily absorbed at high temperatures, and much of it is retained when the alloys are cooled to room temperature. The presence of hydrogen in the range of composition from 10 to 18 per cent manganese is a major factor in determining relative ductility. At 22 per cent manganese, and also at compositions below 10 per cent manganese, factors other than or in addition to hydrogen play a role. These are discussed. Also data are presented to show that hydrogen absorbed by the high-carbon alloys of Hadfield composition is without effect on their mechanical properties.

A fine lamellar structure with interlamellar spacings ranging from 0.I to 3.7 was Woduced by high-speed directional solidification and used to study the interaction of dislocations with an array of bimetallic bound-am.es. The tensile flow properties were measured at elevated temperatures and the results interpreted in terms of an image force model. As the width of the plates decreases the strength increases according to a Hall-Petch relation, suggesting pile -ups. Considerable strengthening was also observed at elevated temperatures. In recent years composites containing a strong but brittle phase and a ductile but weak phase have been studied extensively in the search for a high-strength material with adequate ductility.&apos; However, the strength of these composites has been limited to a volumetric average of the strengths of the component phases. In this paper we will show that a composite made by directional solidification of a Cu-Ag eutectic has strength properties that substantially exceed the strength of either of the metals in the composite, and an explanation for this increased strength will be presented. The Cu-Ag eutectic is a near ideal material to study for several reasons. The eutectic structure is made up of alternate plates of silver-rich and copper-rich phases with the same crystal structure.2&apos;3 In addition, the mechanical and elastic properties of silver4 and copper5 are known over a wide range of temperatures and the eutectic microstructure is stable to nearly the melting point.6&apos;7 Therefore, the properties of the eu-tectic are readily comparable to various theories involving the mechanical properties of copper and silver. The experiments consisted of producing directionally solidified Ag-Cu eutectic material, determining the structure and performing tensile tests at different temperatures and strain rates. EXPERIMENTAL A) Solidification and structure. A cylindrical ingot 2.2 cm in diam and 15 cm long was prepared from 99.999 pct pure materials and cast in argon. The ingot was placed in an alumina crucible and was direc-tionally solidified at 7 x 10"4 cm per sec in a Bridg-man apparatus in argon. Metallographic examination at both ends and along the length of the ingot showed a uniform structure that consisted of fine alternate plates of silver- and copper-rich phases. The plates were aligned parallel to the growth direction, as shown in the longitudinal section, Fig. 1, and were in small randomly oriented domains of parallel plates as viewed in a transverse section, Fig. 2. Four smaller ingots 0.175 in. in diam were solidified at speeds of 2Xlo-&apos;, 4.4 xlo-&apos;, 4.4 x 10-3, and4.4x10-4 cm per sec to produce a range of lamellar spacings. While pure magnesium does not corrode rapidly the presence of even very small quantities of certain other metals accelerates corrosion remarkably. Because magnesium is such an electropositive metal (E° = +2.34 volts)&apos; the presence of substances that permit galvanic activity is extremely undesirable. It is stated that as little as 0.017 pct of iron in magnesium causes a marked increase in the corrosion rate.2 Magnesium and its alloys are commonly melted in iron or steel pots; consequently the commercial metal has the opportunity to pick up iron if it has that tendency. Quantitative data on the solubility of iron in magnesium are of practical as well as of academic interest. Some magnesium alloy castings tend to have large grain size unless suitable treatment is given to the liquid metal just prior to casting. One method of grain refinement consists of "superheating" the metal just prior to casting. "Superhcating" is heating to a temperature 100 to 200°C above the casting temperature and holding for a short period of time. Superheated metal has a much finer grain than unsuperheated metal. A satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon has not been forthcoming. One hypothesis attributes the grain refinement in the superheated metal to precipitation of some phase that is mis-cible at the temperature of superheat but not miscible just below the casting temperature and which is thought to provide nucleating centers for crystallization. This phase, if the foregoing hypothesis is correct, would probably be a metal or an intermetal-lic compound. Of the metals likely to be found in magnesium alloys, iron is one of the most likely candidates for the role of grain refiner for iron occurs in small quantities in all commercial magnesium and magnesium alloys. A. Beck³ states that magnesium, in either the liquid or the solid state, cannot dissolve iron and that iron exists as a finely divided suspension which does not settle out because of its extreme fineness. Beck also presents a micrograph showing a large iron dendrite in magnesium but does not comment on the crystallization of iron from a solution supposed to contain none. It is doubtful that dendrite formation from suspended iron -would be possible. This suspension theory is the basis of patents4 covering the removal of iron from magnesium by allowing the iron particles to act as nuclei for the formation of primary magnesium crystals which can be separated by segregation. Also covered by patents is the removal of iron by the addition of another metal to form an intermetallic compound with the iron which, because of its increased particle size, is able to settle out of the molten metal. Here, too, quantitative information on the extent of iron solubility in liquid magnesium is of more than theoretical interest. M. Hansen,5 in his critical collection of the data on binary alloys, states that iron is not soluble in liquid magnesium. W. R. D. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, permeability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of well completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands. THEORIES of fracture in metals have been based primarily on the dependence of fracture strength on grain size. This dependence was first observed by Masing and Polanyi.l These workers, as well as 0rowan12 and Davidenkov and Wittman,&apos; thought the grain size could be equated with the crack size in the Griffith condition for crack propagation.4 In this way they could account for the observed proportionality between fracture stress and the reciprocal square root of the grain size. The chief results of recent investigations of the fracture strength of polycrystals are summarized in Fig. 1. Low for iron,5 Petch for iron,&apos; Greenwood and Quarrel for zinc, Petch and Zein for zinc,&apos; and Hauser, Landon, and Dorn for magnesium&apos;&apos; have all found that the fracture stress of a polycrystal is proportional to the reciprocal square root of the grain size. Also, they find that, for large grain sizes, the fracture stress lies near the extrapolation of the yield-stress curve determined at small grain sizes; where measurable plastic strain precedes fracture. Low9 has gone a step further and shown that, in Range 1, the fracture stress in tension is almost identical to the yield stress in compression for a given grain size. Homes and Gouzou, 10 and Low also have shown that, in Range 2 of Fig. 1, microcracks form when the yield stress is reached, but they do not cause failure until the stress reaches a much higher value. The fact that yielding always precedes fracture suggests that fracture is induced by plastic flow. A mechanism by which this might occur was first proposed by Zener.11 He pointed out that blocked dislocations would cause stress concentrations which might cause fracture. The blocking would be caused by grain boundaries. This idea has been developed by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro,12 by Koehler,13 and by Stroh.14 By means of etchpits blocked dislocations have been observed in brass by Jacquet,15 in zinc by Gilman,16 and in lithium fluoride by Gilman and johnston. The blocked-dislocation theory and the experiments that bear on it have been summarized by Mott.18 One of the strong points of the blocked-dislocation theory is that it can explain the grain-size dependence of the fracture stress in a natural way. However, Low9 has pointed out that the theory is not satisfying when it is considered quantitatively. Gilman10 also has criticized the theory and presented an alternative interpretation of the relation between fracture stress and grain size. Since the blocked-dislocation theory is not the only theory that can explain in the grain-size effect, it is necessary to find other evidence either to support or deny it. In this investigation the following points were studied: 1) If blocked dislocations normally cause fracture, then the fracture stress ought to be very high in the absence of plastic glide. The second-order, nonlinear, partial- dillerential equation representing the transient radial flow of gas - condensate fluids in reservoirs has been integmted by using finite -dillerence equations and electronic computers. Effect was given to pressure -dependent permeability, viscosity, and compressibility and to distance-dependent permeability. The influence of a second-degree velocity term in the Darcy equation was investigated. Implicit methods were used and practical, convergent solutions were obtained with material balance to less than 6 x 10-4 for recovery of one- hall the reserve at constant flow rate. Integration results provide the productive period of a reservoir for a given constant rate and the fraction of the fluid initially in place that can be recovered in that period. The properties of a lean and a rich fluid are represented in a set of integrations designed to demonstrate the effect of different constant-recovery rates and significant variables emphasized one at a time. INTRODUCTION A method is needed for computing the availability or reserve of a gas in a formation, making use of all technical and engineering information that is pertinent. As a step in this direction, a program for computing transient linear flow1 was developed that utilizes principles of earlier finite-difference computing for a similar purpose2-4 and gives effect to significant pressure- and distance-dependent properties of reservoirs and their contents. The present paper pertains to transient, radial flow of gas-condensate fluids. In the partial-differential equation of flow, effect is given to the variables viscosity and compressibility,5 and also to permeability. Included in the study is the quadratic form of the Darcy equation of flow that has been the subject of field tests6 and that has been applied to a gas with constant properties in transient flow computing. 7 Inclusion in the differential equation of variable coefficients to represent properties greatly complicates the higher derivatives of the equation. Because it was impractical to make a required improvement in certain of the finite-difference derivatives by Taylor-series expansion, five-term derivatives were used in the implicit computing. Related methods were developed that can improve general facility in manipulating finite-difference equations. FLOTATION tests, from which the flowsheet for the concentrator was determined, were made in a pilot mill at Chuquicamata and later comparative testing of full size flotation cells was done at the Andes Copper Mining Co. concentrator in Potrerillos. The principal sulphide copper mineral is chalcocite with varying amounts of covellite, enargite, and chalcopyrite. The oxidized portion is principally antlerite, a green basic copper sulphate. The gangue minerals include quartz, sericite, pyrite, feldspars and kaolin. Chuquicamata pit ores have proved to be hard grinding. The results of the flotation and metallurgical work prove that good extraction and concentrate grade can be obtained under a rather wide range of conditions. Metallurgy In general the metallurgy of the ore requires a fairly close control of the grind to the primary rougher flotation and of the regrind of the primary rougher concentrate before cleaning. Regrinding is necessary to reduce the insoluble content of the final concentrate since a large part of the middling combinations are between the copper and silica minerals. The alkalinity of the pulps can vary between wide limits and control of the percent solids gives the desired grind. Alkalinity Control Arroyo Salado water is supplied to the concentrator head tanks. It contains about 5000 ppm of salts but test work shows no deleterious effect. Actually this water permits a decrease of as much as 1 lb of lime per ton of ore as compared to San Pedro water, which is used for leaching oxide ore. About one quarter of the water flow through the concentrator will be new water from the reservoir. The remainder will be reclaimed from the thickeners. For primary grinding and rougher flotation, new and reclaimed water are combined in the head tanks. To avoid erratic results, only new water is used in the regrind system. Milk of lime is added to the rod mill feed chute to obtain the maximum benefit of mixing with the ore. This protects the equipment from corrosion due to entrained acids and soluble copper salts. Lime consumption is 3 to 5 lb per ton of ore. Grinding and Flotation The six bin gates over each belt feeder are opened in controlled combination and sequence to keep a live bed of ore in the bin to prevent arching and to obtain mixing. The milk of lime added ahead of the rod mill is regulated to suit rougher flotation requirements. The primary promoter reagent, Aerofloat 238, is added to the 10-mesh discharge of the rod mill as it is laundered to the ball mill scoop box. The classifier overflow is regulated to produce a grind of about 12 to 15 pct +65 mesh and 60 pct -200 mesh. A secondary promoter Z-4 (aml zanthate) and the pine oil frother are added in the overflow launder where a pH of 10 to 11 is maintained. Comparatively heavy beds of froth on the

The rate of oxidation of titanium in the temperature range 650° to 950°C has been measured. &apos;The linear rate law obtained is explained by interface reaction control of the process. Tracer experiments indicate the oxygen diffuses in at least one phase of the scale. THE kinetics of oxidation of titanium, principally at low temperatures and under varying oxygen pressures, have been reported.¹,² In the present investigation the rates of oxidation of titanium have been determined by the gravimetric method in the temperature range 650" to 1000°C under 1 atm of oxygen. Some of the scales formed were powdered and an endeavor was made to identify the phases present by X-ray diffraction. Alexander and Pigeon1 ascribe a logarithmic rate law to the growth of thick films formed at temperatures up to 565"C, and Gulbransen and Andrew&apos; suggest that the parabolic rate law holds up to 600°C. In both cases large initial deviations from those relationships are apparent and no explanation is offered. In the present experiments it is shown that a linear rate law holds in the temperature range 650" to 1000°C, and it is suggested that the initial deviations observed are due in part to a spurious surface area effect and also to the high solubility of oxygen in titanium metal. Positive information on the mechanism of oxidation is not available, but oxygen ion diffusion through the lattice is inferred from the re- sults of trace experiments. X-ray analysis of the scale confirms Gulbransen and Hickman&apos;s&apos; observation on the presence of rutile TiO². Experimental Details The titanium used in these experiments was prepared by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium and was used in the form of rolled sheet. Samples approximately 0.040x0.5x0.75 in. were cut and polished to a fineness of 4/0 on metal-lographic polishing papers. Individual samples, suspended on a platinum wire, were lowered into the hot zone of a furnace, in vacuo, by means of a winch, and oxygen was admitted after the desired temperature was attained. The increase of weight of single samples oxidized for fixed times at certain temperatures was determined by weighing the sample before and after oxidation on a chemical balance. In these instances the sample was used for only one time at one temperature. In some cases the course of oxidation was followed by attaching the sample to a sensitive spring balance and noting periodically the extension of the spring with time of oxidation. Kirkendall type experiments were carried out by marking the surface of the titanium prior to oxidation with a solution containing radioactive silver. After drying, the specimen was heated in vacuo to decompose the silver nitrate used, leaving a small amount of metallic radioactive silver on the surface. In reporting results of precipitation hardening experiments, it is customary to include such conditions as solution heat-treatment temperature, specimen size, and quench medium as well as the aging time and temperature. One portion of thermal history that is often overlooked is the effect of the heating rate employed to achieve the aging temperature. It is the intent of this note to demonstrate the importance of the rate of heating to aging temperatures. This work was carried out on the aluminum alloy 7075 aged at 162oC, a temperature commonly used to obtain stress corrosion resistant tempers. A 2 in. thick plate of 7075 was quenched into 24°C water after solution heat-treatment for 2 hr at 470°C. Approximately 13 in. around the periphery of the plate was discarded to minimize quench rate variations, and the remainder was divided into 0.5 by 1.8 by 2.0 in. blocks which were held at room temperature, 24oC, for 4 days. This aging, or incubation period, at room temperature allowed a copious supply of GP-zones to form. Blocks were then heated at various rates to 162oC using the practices shown in Table I. Both single- and two-step aging practices were employed for each heating rate. The single step consisted of heating directly to temperature at the indicated rate while the two-stage practice included an interruption of heating for 7 hr at 107°C. In the case of the two-stage 100°C per min heating rate experiment, the specimens were returned to room temperature after 7 hr at 107°C where they were held for 16 hr be-fore finally heating at this rate to 162°C. This devia-tion in practice is not considered to be significant. Blocks were removed after various times at 162oC, and aging curves were determined from duplicate R. F. ASHTON and D. S. By 1950 or soon thereafter facilities will be available in foreign countries for the production, transportation, and refining of about 4,305,000 bbl per day of crude oil—a volume not far short of current United States output. This is indicated by announced plans for foreign expansion, - some of the work being already under way. The projected potential production is about 1,500,000 bbl per day or 50 pct above the record-setting foreign production of 2,810,000 bbl daily in 1946. The scheduled new foreign facilities are equivalent to almost one third of the present facilities of the United States. Fears that so much additional foreign oil may flood world markets and disrupt the domestic industry of the United States are not justified. The projected foreign expansion apparently has been planned on a sound business basis, with careful consideration of the world&apos;s actual need for all the projected additional production. Materially increased world demand for petroleum promises to absorb the increased supplies without ill effect upon the domestic industry. Even by applying conservative estimates of both foreign and domestic demand, it is indicated that world requirements can absorb the projected larger foreign output and still permit continued increase in United States production. World demand would have to increase only 5.7 pct per year in the 1947 to 1950 period to absorb the prospective supply. Such an increase may be conservatively projected, in view of past and current trends. Introduction Recent announcements of plans for expanding petroleum facilities in the Middle East and Venezuela foreshadow an unusually sharp increase in foreign production in the immediate future. Therefore, the next few years will bring far-reaching changes in world petroleum affairs, with foreign petroleum production and other activities assuming much greater importance than formerly. Tabulation of figures on development already under way or planned indicates that in the next several years facilities will be available for producing, transporting and refining twice the prewar production of foreign fields and about 50 pct or nearly 1,500,000 bbl a day above their record-level output of 1946. To say that foreign fields may be producing such an enlarged quantity by 1950 is, of course, a statement of great significance to everyone connected .with the oil industry and especially to those of the American petroleum industry. A production of 1,500,000 bbl daily is equal to the combined yield of the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico. This means that within the next several years foreign petroleum facilities will undergo a new expansion equivalent to one third of the present facilities of the United States. To think of such an expansion in foreign production is to raise at this meeting the question of what this prospective foreign development means for the United States, the American petroleum industry in general, and the American engineer and technologist in particular.
