An extended study of dustproofing Freeport-seam coal has emphasized several fundamental features in the successful treating of bituminous coals. The extent of the exposed surface area and its absorption propcrties for the dust-retaining film were found to be the most critical factors affecting the efficiency of fly-dust prevention. From recently published screen data and specific surface-area measurements on United Kingdom coals, an approximation of the surface exposed by mine-run coal and by 1-in. slack was made. The total surface area exposed by an average tori of this mine-run coal was estimated at 3768 sq. yd., while a ton of 1-in. slack represents a total surface area of 8779 sq. yd. with no additions for porosity. It is important in coal treating to consider that in mine-run coal the fraction above 1/4 in. in size represents 79.5 per cent of the total weight, but only 4 per cent of the total surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh contains 47 per cent of the total surface and only 1.2 per cent of the total weight. Also, one should appreciate that, in a 1-in. slack, the domestic stoker fraction (1 in. to 8 mesh) contains 76.3 per cent of the weight and 8.2 per cent of the surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh represents 3.3 per cent by weight and 54.8 per cent by surface area. Wax extraction data on 1-in. to 0 slack from mine-run treated Freeport-searn coal showed that the coating was distributed uniformly as a function of exposed surface; hence, nonuniformly on a weight basis. This distribution of the coating on mine-run coal therefore limits the extent of treating that is desirable on bituminous coal at this point in the preparation. The treatment of Freeport mine-run coal before it reached the tipple gave a 70 to 80 per cent reduction of fly-dust in the tipple, a satisfactory treated commercial slack coal, and an indicated change in the trend of tipple degradation. The premium-treated domestic sizes required a supplemental treatment for complete dustproofness. The electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. is in Government Gulch, at Silver King, Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, about one mile from the Bunker Hill smelter and about three miles from Kellogg. The Sullivan Mining Co., which owns both the zinc plant and the Star mine, is itself owned jointly by the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co, and the Hecla Mining Company. The Tainton high-density, high-acid process is used at this plant, therefore some parts of its flowsheet differ markedly from those of electrolytic plants using the low-density process. While it is a custom plant and has treated a variety of zinc concentrates originating from various sources in a number of states, it has obtained its main supply of zinc concentrates chiefly from the zinc-bearing ores of the Coeur d'A1ene mining district, of which the principal important sources have been the Bunker Hill and Star mines. Thus the main feed has been zinc concentrates obtained from complex lead-zinc-silver ores. For the year of 1935 the concentrates had the following composition: water, 9.5 per cent; Zn, 50.6; Pb, 3.3; Fe, 9.4; S, 31.0; Cu, 0.2; insoluble, 2.9. Flowsheet The concentrates are delivered to the plant in railroad cars, which discharge into storage bins directly under the track. Bottom-dump cars are dropped directly into the bins while a slip scraper, pulled by an air tugger hoist, is used to empty box cars. There are five storage bins for concentrates, each of approximately 300 tons capacity. At the bottom of each bin there are individual belt feeders that discharge onto a common conveyor belt, which in turn discharges to another belt that carries the concentrate onto a weightometer belt for weighing. Immediately after the weighing, the crushed oversize return from the roasters is added to the load on the belt and then the ground-up sweepings, lumps and roaster cleanings. An electromagnet at the end of this conveyor removes tramp iron from the feed. The formation volume and volume of the liquid phase of oil and gas obtained from four fields in the San Joaquin Valley have been investigated at pressures, temperature, and gas-oil ratios comparable to those encountered in underground reservoirs. All the fields covered in this investigation yielded a product of a gas-oil ratio in excess of 5000 cu ft per barrel and the gravity of the tank oil for the four fields in question varied between 52° and 63' API. The results of the investigation, together with analytical data concerning the composition of the oil and gas, are submitted in tabular form. Rough correlations of the formation volume as a function of pressure, temperature, and gas-oil ratio and of the retrograde dew-point pressure as a function of gas-oil ratio, temperature, and gravity of tank oil are presented. It was not found feasible to correlate simply the formation volume of the liquid phase as a function of the applicable variable. It is desired to emphasize that these correlations are considered applicable only to the range of conditions covered in this investigation and for systems of similar nature and composition. The tensile properties of iodide vanadium were determined as a function of hydrogen concentration. It was shown that the presence of 10 ppm H is sufficient to cause embrittlement of vanadzum over a limited temperature range. The temperature of the observed ductility mininlum is approximately -l00°C, this being a function of strain rate and hydrogen concentration. The yield stress of hydrogenated vanadium is raised sharply in the brittle temperature range. THE present investigation was initiated to determine the effect of hydrogen on the tensile properties of high-purity vanadium as a function of temperature and the role of hydrogen in the brittle-ductile transition. Loomis and Carlson&apos; reported a change from ductile to brittle behavior in iodide vanadium at -110°C with a return of ductility at temperatures below -140°C. Vanadium wire containing 270 pprn of hydrogen was brittle at room temperature while wire containing 100 ppm was ductile under the same conditions. Roberts and Rogers&apos; reported a ductile-brittle-ductile fracture sequence in vanadium containing 400 to 600 ppm of hydrogen. Their data show that hydrogenated vanadium is ductile at 150"C, brittle at room temperature and ductile again at -196°C. Magnusson and Baldwin found a minimum in ductility in vanadium containing 80 ppm hydrogen from tensile tests performed at several strain rates. Information available on the vanadium-hydrogen equilibrium system4 is somewhat incomplete. The absorption of hydrogen is exothermic in accordance with the decline in solubility with rising temperature. The limit of solid solubility at temperatures below 400°C has not been determined due to the difficulties in obtaining equilibrium at these temperatures. Data on the hydrides of vanadium are rather limited. Roberts6 studied the structure of VD,., by neutron diffraction, and observed the ordering of the deuterium atoms below -65°C into a primitive cubic cell with a lattice constant about twice that of the disordered bcc vanadium solid solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vanadium of 99.9 pct purity was prepared by the iodide refining process6 for use in this investigation. This vanadium contained the following analyzed impurities; <20 pprn calcium, 150 ppm carbon, 200 ppm chromium, 30 ppm copper, 10 ppm hydrogen, 200 ppm iron, <20 ppm magnesium, <20 ppm nickel, <5 ppm nitrogen, 150 ppm oxygen, <50 ppm silicon, and <20 ppm titanium. specimen Preparation—Tensile specimens were machined from swaged rods of iodide vanadium. 1. INTRODUCTION The Bond method(1.2) for sizing tumbling ball mills has been used successfully for many years. The primary purpose of the Bond calculation is to predict the mill size and mill power to give a desired capacity (Q tph) from a wet overflow ball mill in normal closed circuit operated with a circulation ratio of 2.5. The input to the calculation is the make-up feed size characterized by the 80%-passing size in micrometers (xG), the desired circuit product size characterized by the 80%-passing size (xQ), and an empirical grindability number (the standard Bond Work Index) determined by a standard test. A series of empirical correcting factors(2) are used to convert the results to open-circuit or dry grinding in grate discharge mills. The Bond method has two major engineering advantages: (i) it is very simple; (ii) experience has shown that it works for many circumstances, as a reasonable approximation, because it is based on direct conversion of test data to results measured on industrial mills. There are four main disadvantages of the Bond method. First, there will be a range of error for any specific mill and material and set of operating conditions because the method does not explicitly include several variables which are obviously important: (i) recycle ratio and classifier efficiency (ii) mixture of ball sizes in the mill (iii) variations of residence time distributions with mill geometry and slurry density (iv) lifter design (v) slurry rheology (vi) different underfilling or overfilling of the mill as flow rate is changed. Second, the Bond method explicitly assumes that specific grinding energy E is not a function of ball load, whereas industrial practice and laboratory tests(3) show that the specific grinding energy (to go from a specified feed to a specified product) is less for lower ball loadings than the ball loading for maximum mill capacity. Third, the method uses only the 80% passing size of circuit feed and product to characterize the size distributions, whereas mill capacity in general must depend on the shape of the feed size distribution and the product size distribution. Ellsworth Daggett, who joined the Institute in 1873, and had beeu a prominent figure in the mining profession of Utah and other Western states for many years, died in San Francisco, Jan. 5, 1923. Mr. Daggett was a contemporary and intimate friend of Clarence King, James D. Hague, R. W. Raymond, and other Nestors of the mining engineering profession prominent in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. He was born at Canandaigua, N. Y., May 24, 1845; graduated from Sheffield Scientific School in 1864; pursued post-graduate courses there for two years, and for one year at the Bergakademie, in Berlin. He was in active practice as mining engineer from 1866 to 1914, but devoted most of his time during the World War to the perfecting of a submarine torpedo. He was connected with the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel in 1870. The plates illustrating mining industry, Volume III of the reports of that survey, were engraved from drawings obtained in the field during progress of the survey and prepared for the engraver by Mr. Daggett. He operated the Winnamuck mine and smelter at Bingham Cation, Utah, in the early seventies; the mines and mill at Cusihuiriachic, Chihuahua, 18867; and the Berlin mine near Austin, Nevada, 1904-6. On June 24, 1874, Mr. Daggett married Miss June Spencer, of Salt Lake City, who survives him, residing in New Haven, Corn. Appointed United States Surveyor General for Utah by President Harrison, in 1888, he was the first engineer to hold that office in Utah. He reorganized the mineral division of the office, required the courses of mineral surveys to be referred to the true meridian determined by solar or stellar observations, and did much to improve the accuracy and reliability of such surveys. Mr. Daggett was a member of the Alta and University Clubs of Salt Lake City, and president of the latter from 1890 to 1892; he was also a member of the Century Club, New York. Through his instrumentality, irrigation was brought to considerable tracts of land in northeastern Utah, and Daggett County of that state is named for him. Re wrote numerous technical papers, and an economic review entitled "A Quarter of a Century of Prices," in which was shown the close relation

Those interested in training engineers for the mineral industry should consider how their men may fit into the general industrial recovery that now seems well started. One hears occasionally that too many engineers have been produced, especially mining engineers, and that the opportunities for their employment are decreasing. Just what is the situation? Enrollment in American engineering schools has fallen off sharply during the past few years. In 1930-31, the year of peak enrollment in all engineering schools, there were 78,685 engineering students in the United States, but in 1932-33 only 67,584, a decrease of 14 per cent. President Walters, of the University of Cincinnati, in his survey of 74 engineering schools, published in School and Society of Dec. 16, 1933, estimates that the engineering enrollment for 1933-34 is 10 per cent under that of 1932-33, or about 60,000. The situation in the mineral .ethnology schools somewhat parallels this general trend, although not to the same degree. Last year there were 4443 students in mineral technology schools, compared with 4687 in 1930-31, a decrease of 5 per cent. This year, with 3995 students, the enrollment shows a decrease of 10 per cent from last year, or a decrease of 15 per cent from 1930-31. Enrollment has no doubt been influenced by the condition of the mincral industry, just as the enrollment of other engineers has been affected by general industrial conditions. But the mineral industry, which is the first to recover, has not been so seriously affected as have some of the manufacturing industries during the past four years. This is especially true of coal and gold mining, which have been increasing rapidly in their production during the past year and have given employment to more men. Ten years ago, approximately 1,000,000 men were employed in the coal and metal mines and quarries, compared with probably half that number now. The number of mining engineering graduates in 1934 will be 234 and in metallurgy 252. In other words, fewer than 500 graduates are entering these industries the present year. With conditions improving in the mineral industry, coupled with a falling enrollment in our mining schools, there certainly exists an opportunity for young men now beginning their training for this industry.

In October 1945. R. F. Farris. in an AIME paper entitled Method For Drtermining Minimum Waiting OIL Cenzent Time, presented a method for caiculating the minimum WOC* time required in oil well cementing operations. Briefly. this method consisted of shutting in a well. after the cement had been placed and noting the time required fur the wellhead pressure to reach a. maximum. This time was then multiplied by a factor of 1.5 to determine when the cement had reached sufficient strength to support the weight of the casing. As a result of this work, a number of areas have reduced their WOC time ~Wuirements with the subsequent saving of considerable rig time. The tests conducted by Farris were, for the most part, conducted under cementing temperatures in excess of 70°F. This was done because in the overwhelming majority of cases. cementing temperatures are in excess of 70°F (only in tile northern part of the country. primarily in the Rocky Mountain ares. in cementing surface casing are temperatures below 70° F. encountered, and such temperatures occur only during the winter months). The Stano-lind Research Laboratory since that time has performed a number of tests both in the laboratory and in the field to evaluate this WOC factor when cemeriting temperatures are lower than 70°F. The results of these tests indicated the need for greater WOC time in areas affeaed by abnormally low cementing temperatures. These tests indi.cated that a woc factor of 2 (Time from start to mix cement to maximum wellhead pressure x 2 = Time to drill plug) will allow sufficient time for the cement to develop adequate strength. A field test under abnormally low cementing temperatures (surface temyerature 35°F., mud discharge temperature <70°F. and cementing depth 500 ft.) in the Rangely Field, "* using the WOC factor of 2, indicated the time to drill the plug as 45 hours. Well conditions preventing getting back into the well until a 48-hour WOC time had elapsed. At this time, the plug drilled firm to hard indicating that the cement had reached its final set. It is contemplated that during next winter additional field tests will be performed to further check the results of the laboratory and field tests conducted to date,

Austria.—Austria produced some 430 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1934. Gosting II well near Zis-tersdorf was placed on the pump in August and at the end of the year was still producing about three cisterns daily. This well is owned by the Erdöl-Produktionsgesellschaft while Gösting I is owned by Raky-Danubia. Only five wells were completed in the republic during the year. These accounted for 1783.5 meters of the 2225 meters drilled. The only producer completed was Gosting 11. At the close of the year, four rigs were in operation and one rigging up. At least 8 or 10 new wells are planned in Lower Austria for 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. put its 6-km. gas line into operation in May and has sold 12,301,550 cu. m. of gas to the Vienna City Electric Works. A 2-km. pipe line was built from Gösting II to the railway loading rack near Zistersdorf. Hungary.—No oil or gas was produced except a small amount of gas trapped from flowing artesian wells. The Government completed and abandoned a 1500-m. hole at Tisztaberek in northeastern Hungary and is drilling at 967 m. near Bogáes, 120 km. northeast of Budapest. It is unofficially reported it plans to drill two new wells in 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. has a rig up for a test at Mihalyi in Transdanubia. Czechoslovakia.—In Gbely (Egbell) there were produced 1283 cisterns of 10,000 kg. of 0.935 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. This field is operated by the Government; 17 shallow producing wells and three dry holes were drilled, with a total of 3351 m. of hole completed. In Hodonin (Goding) there were produced approximately 1300 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of 0.91 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. The field is operated by the Apollo, which drilled four producing wells averaging 460 m. in depth, one small gas well of 550 m., one small gas well 260, and one dry hole 230 m. Two wells were deepened a total of 80 meters. The Government is drilling below 800 m. in a wildcat test in eastern Czechoslovakia near the Rumanian frontier.

The production of petroleum in Argentina during 1932 was greater than in any preceding year. The total amount produced was 13,012,-756 bbl. This figure represents a decided increase in the production of oil in Argentina and can be attributed largely to the increased activities of the Royal Dutch operations at Kilometer 27 in the Comodoro Rivadavia district and those of the Standard Oil Co. of Argentina in the Salta region. Production from the Royal Dutch wells amounted to considerably more than 10,000 bbl. per day over quite a long period during the year. Of the 13,012,756 bbl. of oil produced during 1932, the Government Agency (Y. P. F.) was responsible for some 5,578,954 bbl., while 7,433,-802 bbl. were produced by private companies. Although in 1930 the Y. P. F. produced about 55 per cent of the total production and in 1930 50 per cent of the total, in 1932 its production had fallen to about 42 1/2 per cent of the total. This decrease in the proportion produced by the Y. P. F. was not due to a decrease in its production but to the decided increase in the production of private companies, particularly those two whose names are given above. One new discovery was recorded during the year. This was a well drilled by the Y. P. F. at Cacheuta in the province of Mendoza which came in pumping 80 bbl. of 15" gravity oil from a depth of 673 meters. This well was completed at approximately the same time that the provincial government of Mendoza granted a concession to the Y. P. F. and declared the whole province as a reserve in which no concessions may be granted for a period of 10 years. Under these conditions, the federally operated Y. P. F. will have no competition in the Cacheuta area from private companies such as they have in the other three fields of the republic. The Y. P. F. wildcat west of Comodoro Rivadavia at Pampa Maria Santissima on the Rio Senguerr was completed as a dry hole during 1932. This we11 was reported as a producer in 1930 by persons returning to this country from Argentina but it appears that they had been misinformed. The site of this test has been abandoned and a new location made north of the Rio Senguerr.

WHEN the copper smelters were built, in Montana, all of the refractory products which were used in their construction were shipped in from Eastern factories. It was apparent that if a material suitable for the manufacture of these products could be found within the State, a saving of freight could be effected and a new industry built up. Prospecting for such materials was started and experiments were made with samples from numerous deposits. Considerable effort and funds were expended in an attempt to manufacture silica brick from Dillon quartz, a light colored sandstone that is found near Dillon, Mont., on the Oregon Shortline railroad. As a brick material the Dillon quartz was a failure, but it has proved very satisfactory as a silica cement. It is now being used in laying silica brick and for reverberatory furnace bottoms. A bed of quartzite that is particularly suited to the manufacture of high-grade silica brick -was finally discovered at Browns Spur, 6 miles west of Anaconda. The material from this deposit is now being used in the manufacture of the Anaconda silica brick, which have gained a wide reputation for heat-resisting and lasting qualities. The analysis of all average sample of this quartz is: SiO2,, 96.7; Fe203, 0.3; Al203, 2.5; CaO, 0.3 per cent. The very low percentage of fluxing ingredients makes this a most refractory material. All of the Anaconda silica brick are hand molded. Various types of brick machines have been tried, but the hand-mold process proved the best suited to the manufacture of silica brick from this material. The silica is first put through a jaw crusher and is then clumped into wet pans, where 4 per cent. of lime paste is added, to produce a bond. Without the lime the. material would not be plastic enough to mold. After a few minutes&apos; grinding in the wet pans the material is conveyed to the molder, who forces it into the molds by hand. The brick are then dumped on pallets and placed in the drier, where they are left until dry enough to be set in the kilns. Some of the brick are re-pressed before being dried. They are burned about five days, in round down-draft kilns. It is not necessary to have as much heat in the kilns as the brick will be subjected

Oil has been produced in Persia and India for many years, but it was not until 1932 that Arabia entered the arena as a potential oil-producing area. In 1930 the Standard Oil Co. of California acquired a concession covering the rights of exploration and exploitation for oil in the Bahrein Islands and in June, 1932, the first commercial production was discovered by the bringing in of a well known as Jebel Dukhan No. 1 on the Island of Bahrein. Since then the Standard Oil Co. of California through its wholly owned subsidiary, The Bahrein Petroleum Co. Ltd., has been carrying on a systematic survey and development program of its concession in the Bahrein Islands. This group of islands, of which Bahrein is the largest, is in the southwestern portion of the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 miles from the mainland of Arabia. Although geographically a part of Arabia, the islands are not a part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Their government is essentially independent but certain special rights have been granted to Great Britain through a series of treaties. The Island of Bahrein is 32 miles long by 9 1/2 miles wide and covers an area of 215 square miles. Approximately three-fourths of the island is occupied by a relatively low, broad, elliptically shaped dissected hill, the central part of which is slightly depressed with inward-facing cliffs but culminating in the Jebel Dukhan (Hill of Smoke), which rises to an elevation of 443 ft. above sea level. The topography of the island is a good index of its geologic structure. Structurally the island is an elongated dome or quaquaversal fold composed of rocks of Eocene age. The major axis of the fold strikes N.5W. All of the topographic high portion of the island is a part of the structural uplift. The crest of the fold is broad and flat with the dips increasing on the flanks. How far tilted strata may continue beyond the line where the Eocene beds are covered by recent sands and detrital material is not known. Superimposed on the general structure are a few small irregularities in the form of minor folding and faulting. There is, however, no evidence of any major faults. Robert E. Hagen (Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp.)—Mr. Stowasser and his associates are to be congratulated on their achievements in developing the design of a pilot agglomerating plant, based on information obtained from experiments made in a laboratory sinter pot, and subsequently constructing and successfully operating this plant. In his Transactions article, May 1955 (vol. 201) Mr. Stowasser stated that the output of his heat treating strand was about 2 Lt per sq ft of grate area per day and that the fuel consumption was 0.7 to 0.8 million Btu per Lt of product. If it is assumed that the burning zone extends from the back of the ignition furnace to the beginning of the recuperation windbox, only about 1/3 of the grate area over the windboxes is utilized for burning pellets, and the actual rate at which partially dried pellets are burned is about 6 Lt per sq ft of grate area per day. It may be interesting to compare the above operating data with that obtained at the Extaca plant, where taconite concentrate is treated on a conventional sin- tering machine using limestone or hydrated lime additives with no recuperation of heat. The entire windbox area is used for burning, and a production rate of 2.5 Lt per sq ft of windbox area per day has been attained at a fuel consumption of 1.8 to 2.0 million Btu per Lt of product, the latter being considerably in excess of that reported by Mr. Stowasser, partly because a circulating load of returns amounting to 28 to 30 pct of the machine feed is used and because no attempt is made to recuperate heat from the waste gases. With the high capital and labor costs prevailing today, it seems that future development of the downdraft grate pelletizing process should be directed toward taking advantage of the high burning rate of predried pellets and increasing capacity, perhaps at the expense of fuel economy, by decreasing the proportion of grate area utilized by ancillary functions. For example, eliminating the cooling zone and using this area for burning would increase the proportion of grate area available for burning from 33 to 50 pct of the total windbox area, and a proportionate increase in capacity would result.

Bahrein &apos;Island.—In 1936 the Bahrein Petroleum Co. continued drilling additional wells to further increase production. In all, 39 flowing wells have now been finished and five others are drilling. A second well has been deepened for prospecting the deeper horizons but has not been successfully completed as a commercial producer. In addition, a well has recently been drilled near the eastern limit of the producing area for edge-water observation. The present system places wells 3000 ft. apart in a rhombic grid, or about one well to 179 acres. The total production for the year was 4,644,635 barrels. It is expected that refinery capacity of 20,000 bbl. per day will have been completed by July, 1937. A new permanent and enlarged camp with office buildings is being built. A new hospital has been constructed and two additional medical men have been added to the staff. Saudi Arabia.—In eastern Saudi Arabia, the California Arabian Standard Oil Co. has continued with the program of prospect drilling started in 1935. After the gas encountered in Dammam well No. 1 had been successfully shut off, it was completed as a small flowing well of 51" gravity oil. Dammam No. 2, which had been started in 1935, tested 3840 bbl. of approximately 50" gravity oil from a depth of 2175 ft. Dammam No. 5, before being deepened for prospecting lower productive horizons, encountered a gas zone producing 30 million feet. Five other wells on the Dammam dome are in various stages of drilling or completion. Most of these have been located principally to outline the productive area and the various producing horizons of the structure. An extensive program of geological work is being continued. In June, 1936, a well was started on the El &apos;Alat structure about 25 miles northwest of the Dammam development. Although various tar showings have been reported, the well has not yet, at 2518 ft., reached the depth at which it has been thought that productive horizons might be encountered. A prospect well is being drilled by the Kuwait Oil Co. (jointly owned by Gulf and Anglo-Iranian Oil Companies) in the Sheikdom of Kuwait. The well is near Bahra, a few miles north of Kuwait Bay and about 240 miles northwest of El &apos;Alat. To date no favorable results at depth of about 6000 ft. have been reported.

The methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins&apos;&apos;. inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walk until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tre-molite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit. Methods of Manufacture Talc, being a soft mineral, is not difficult to reduce to the condition desired by the trade. Powdered talc is admitted under low duty from France, Italy and Austria, and some is being imported from Asiatic points. Talc is usually ground and bolted in any simple reduction mill. That mined in this section is hand-sorted and the quality that will make good powdered talc is ground for use in the manufacture of talcum powder, cosmetics, etc., while all that is hard enough and has sufficient strength is used for crayons and blanks for gas burners and electrical work, being sawed into the shapes desired. The Spies mine is located in the eastern half of the northwest quarter of section 2443-35, near the village of Iron River, Mich., and is operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Speaking generally, the jasper hanging walls of most of the deposits in the Iron River district dip at a steep angle and are exceedingly strong, standing without caving, even after mining has been continued for years and after large excavations have been made. The ore is fairly hard and tough and contains no slippage faces. It occurs in large masses, which are often egg shape, with the smaller end down, and can be mined in open stopes without the use of timber. The common system employed in the district is the shrinkage stope, or some modification of it. The Spies system was developed to utilize the advantages of the open-stope method and to avoid the disadvantages of the shrinkage stope. The Spies shaft was sunk to such a depth that the bottom, or third level, was in rock at a short distance below the bottom of the orebody, the shape and extent of which had been previously determined by diamond drilling. This is shown in plan and by the ore contours at the first, second, and third levels in Fig. 1, and in section in Figs. 2 to 7. In order to provide the necessary mills and raises, three parallel crosscuts were driven on 25 ft. centers on the bottom level. Drifts on the second and first levels were driven to the orebody and followed the foot wall in a southerly direction to the end of the ore. In crosscut 3, Fig. 1, raises 30, 40, 50, and 60 were carried up on the foot wall and holed into the second level, and were ultimately carried up and holed into the first level. These foot-wall raises carry the pipes and ladders, provide a means of ventilation, and furnish safe communication to all working places in the stope. From crosscuts 1, 2, and 3, raises were completed to a height of 32 ft., or the elevation of the first sublevel. They were then connected by east and west crosscuts to the main foot-wall raises 30, 40, 50, and 60, shown in Fig. 4. The crosscuts in raises 1 to 5 were then driven west and the

THE tailing from the gravity concentration plant of the Hecla Mining Co., Gem, Idaho, was former-ly loaded into railroad cars to be used for ballast, highway surfacing material, or concrete work, or dis-posed of by an aerial tramway, which dumped it into another gulch. The tailing averages about 1.2 per cent lead and 0.8 oz. silver to the ton. Further treatment for the recovery of the valuable metals had been investigat-ed several times with results that did not warrant the construction of a retreatment plant; but early in 1925 experimental work was again started with small tests, and later with a 10 tons per day flotation test plant. This showed that the tailing could be ground and treat-ed by flotation at a profit. It was decided to make the new flotation plant an addition to, rather than incor-porate it in the old concentrator, the original capacity of which had been increased many times, the present arrangement being by no means ideal. The old mill buildings were of timber and board contruction, creat-ing more or less fire hazard, so all new construction was made fireproof. Construction work on the new plant was started in the middle of July, 1925, and the plant was placed in operation early in December. The building is of concrete and steel with hollow tile walls, steel sash and corrugated asbestos roofing. The ball-mill floor has for its foundation a cellular reinforced concrete block about 14 ft. deep, extending to cemented river gravel, and the cells filled with tailing to give weight to the block. Overhead, built into the steel frame, is a 5-ton hand-operated traveling crane. With both ball-mills running fully loaded, there is not the slightest trace of vibra-tion in the foundation or building. The flotation floor is of reinforced concrete beam construction and spans Canyon Creek. Adjustable plunger feeders are arranged under the the tailing-bin, which feed by gravity to a 14-in. eleva-tor, discharging to a short 18-in. conveyor. From the conveyor the tailing is discharged into a dividing hop-per, from which point the plant is arranged in three separate units. Each unit consists of a ball-mill in closed circuit with a classifier, and an 8-cell flotation machine and has an approximate capacity of 300 tons per 24 hours.
