I DISAGREE with Mr. Brinsmade on several points, and I will discuss his remarks under the same six topics which he has used. 1. Rate of Interest Earned by Sinking-Fund.-I believe Mr. Brinsmade is confused in his ideas as to the effect of new gold on the interest earned on money. The flood of gold which he mentions certainly should not operate, to increase interest rates, but since it replaces and adds to liquid capital should reduce interest rates and counteract the destruction of liquid capital which he mentions. Furthermore, it is doubtful if the destruction of capital since 1897 by wars and catastrophes has been any greater in proportion than in similar periods before 1897. With regard to savings banks, I would say that only 3 per cent. is allowed on deposits through a large part of the West. As to bonds, they can be bought to yield any rate. of interest desired up to 6 per cent., but, a 5 per. cent. bond is not as safe as a 4 per cent. bond, nor a 4 per cent. bond as safe as a 3 per cent. government security. I do not understand why Mr. Brinsmade says that Mr. Denny's quoted opinion of a 3 per cent. rate is evidently based on English conditions before the Boer War. Certainly there is no reference to the Boer war or to English conditions in Mr. Denny's article. M. Howard Burnham, in his admirable work on mine valuation, says': ". For instance, redemption is taken at 3 per cent., because even 4 per cent. represents a greater risk, as is indicated by the purchase of Government paper to bear only 3 per cent., the great desideratum of the .latter being security." . Again, Mr. Burnham says:2 "The tables are calculated on the assumption that the dividends shall accumulate at 3 per cent. only, as in accordance with the general idea set out elsewhere, a rate greater than 3 per cent. involves appreciable risk with which it were inaccurate to saddle the sinking-fund if risks are to be segregated, this being the basis of all the writer's calculations."

IN this paper, the results of an investigation concerning the diffusion of three elements, magnesium, silicon, and molybdenum, in nickel are presented. The work represents a continuation of a diffusion program relating to solute diffusion in nickel. The program has the dual aim of obtaining useful diffusion data and of yielding insight into the factors governing solute diffusion in close-packed metals. The first paper of this series has been published earlier? In both investigations, in agreement with recent results from other laboratories, the activation energies for solute diffusion were found to be close but not identical to that of self-diffusion in the pure solvent in question. In order to obtain valid diffusion data, certain experimental pitfalls recognized only in recent years had to be avoided. Chief among these were the necessity for minimizing short-circuiting diffusion paths such as grain boundaries and the necessity for using low solute concentration gradients. In this series of investigations the following precautions were taken in an attempt to minimize such errors. 1) Samples with large grain sizes, 0.5 to 10 mm, were prepared. 2) The diffusion coefficients were measured at relatively high temperatures, since imperfections such as dislocations play a less important role at such temperatures than at lower temperatures. 3) Alloys containing less than 1 atomic pct were chosen for study. Experimental Work Materials—A diffusion couple technique was employed in the experimental investigation. Briefly, this technique consisted of the following. A diffusion couple was fabricated by placing a flat face of a cylindrically shaped alloy disk against a similar face of a pure nickel disk, and a bond was formed at an intermediate temperature under pressure. The diffusion couple thus fabricated was subjected to a diffusion anneal at higher temperatures for a measured period of time and then sectioned perpendicular to the direction of diffusion. After analyzing the sections for solute concentration the diffusion coefficient was determined from a probability, plot of concentration vs distance from the diffusion interface. Vacuum melted Mond nickel was used in the experimental program. The chemical analysis of this nickel is listed in Table I. Alloys used were prepared

The thermodynamics properties of the liquid Pb-Ag-Au system have been determined from galvanic cell measurments five pseudobinary systems of fixed XAg/XAu ratio. The galvanic cell employed a molten PbO-SiO2 electrolyte and was operated between 775" and 1030°C. The thermodynamics properties of lead were obtained directly from the experimental data, whereas the excess integral molar properties and the activities of silver and gold were obtained by means of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. The calculated proper -ties of the Ag-Au system agree well with the published properties. The liquidus surface of the Pb-Ag-Au system has been determined at 1200°K. In Parts I' and 11' the galvanic cell Mo,Pb(l)|(PbO-SiO2)(l) SiO2(s) |Pb(alloy)(l), Mo [I] was used to determine the thermodynamics properties of the Pb-Ag and Pb-Au systems, respectively. The use of cell I, in which a molten oxide electrolyte is employed rather than the classical fused-salt electrolyte, was shown to result in more accurate ther-modynamic measurements in that the displacement reaction at the alloy-electrolyte interface (l/Zb)B(alloy) + (I/za)A+Za = (1/Za)A(alloy) + (1/Zb)B+zb [1] was minimized. For the Pb-Ag system, where B = Ag(l), the error in the activity of lead (aPd) re-sulting from Reaction [I] was calculated to be less than 1 pct.l For the Pb-Au system the error in aPb was calculated to be less than 0.5 pct.2 Also, electro-transport measurements on the PbO-SiO2 electro-lyte1,2 established that the conduction was entirely ionic and that lead was present only in the divalent state. In the present study the experimental technique is extended to an investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the liquid Pb-Ag-Au system. Five pseudobinary systems of fixed X Ag/XAu ratio were selected. The experimental results were then combined with the previous measurements on the component binary systems Pb-Ag1 and Pb-AU2 to calculate, by means of the Gibbs-Duhem equation, the molar and partial molar mixing properties for the liquid ternary solutions.

The McGill smelter started operations in the year 1907. The smelter furnaces were fired with run-of-mine coal on grates until April 1911, when oil firing was introduced. Oil firing continued until April 1918, when the initial coal-pulverizing plant was started.' Early Pulverizing Plant Various alterations were made to that plant during its operation, one of the more important being in connection with the system for delivering pulverized coal. In order to minimize coal-dust explosions and fires, the return portion of the main delivery line was eliminated in the year 1928. Thereafter coal-dust explosions and fires were greatly reduced. Pulverized coal was prepared at this plant primarily for the reverberatory furnaces, but for several years it was also delivered to the converting plant, roasters and power-plant boilers by a system of auxiliary fans and delivery lines. During the period March 29 to April 8, 1929, one reverberatory furnace was fired with pulverized coal produced by an Aero, type J, unit coal pulverizer with a rated capacity of 5 tons per hour. This machine actually pulverized its rated capacity but the product was too coarse. After certain regulations, a her product was obtained but the pulverizer capacity decreased and this resulted in insufficient coal for efficient furnace operation. Table I gives a comparison of the average screen analyses of the pulverized-coal products from the impact-type unit pulverizer and the regular coal-plant installation. It was definitely proved that this size and type of unit pulverizer could not furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness to give smelting results comparable to that obtained with the regular coal-pulverizing plant. The coal from this unit pulverizer was so coarse that it did not ignite or burn properly and thus did not produce the proper heat for efficient smelting. During the latter part of 1929 and the early part of 1930, experimental work was conducted with a 7-ft. o-in. by 48-in. Hardinge conical ball-mill coal-grinding unit, which was installed alongside a furnace in the reverberatory building. Results obtained from the test run indicated that this unit would furnish sufficient coal of proper fineness for good smelting.

FREQUENT reference has been made to the increased domestic gasoline demand recorded for 1931. This increase was in the neighborhood of 7,000,000 bbl. Although smaller relatively than that to which the oil industry had become accustomed by virtue of the experience of preceding years, the increase was of substantial amount, particularly at a time when any increase at all could be regarded with eminent satisfaction. Less has been said, however, of the 18,000,000 bbl. decline in gasoline shipments to territories and foreign countries. When the loss of business outside the United States is combined with the domestic increase, there results a net loss of some 11,000,000 bbl._ in total gasoline demand. The gain of 2 per cent in domestic sales gives way to a loss of 2.5 per cent in total domestic and foreign sales. The United States actually has been losing ground in the international gasoline market since 1924, when shipments from this .country equaled 72 per cent of the gasoline shipments from the leading gasoline-producing countries of the world. A loss in relative standing was recorded with each succeeding year. As long, however, as gasoline shipments showed an actual increase, the loss in relative standing was of little concern. Foreign producing centers annually supplied an increasing share of the foreign gasoline markets, but, until the past year, the demand abroad con-tinued to increase at a pace which could accommodate all of the, increased output of foreign plants and yet require increasing quantities from the United States. It was not until 1931 that the various factors were combined so as to produce an actual and substantial decrease in the foreign demand for United States gasoline. Consumption in foreign countries generally declined, while the output of foreign refineries and the foreign manufacture of substitute fuels continued to increase. From our own viewpoint, this meant a loss of some 18,000,000 bbl. of gasoline busi-ness in foreign countries, one-half of it probably due to the lowering in foreign demand and the other half to the increased output of foreign refineries and the increased utilization of substitute fuels.

THE fact that a symposium on pyrometry is being held under the auspices of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers may very properly be taken as a recognition of the importance of temperature measurements and control in production and in the industries, and of the need for instruction in pyrometry in our schools of engineering. Though there may be general agreement as to the need of some instruction along this line, there will undoubtedly be divergence of opinion as to the amount of time that can be allowed to such instruction, as well as to its character. Those who have given little attention to the complexity of high-temperature measurements will be apt to think that a few simple experiments are all that is required. They fail to distinguish between the artisan, who merely has to learn how to use any piece of apparatus that is installed, and the technically trained man, who must be prepared to assume the responsibility for the supervision and maintenance of the pyrometric equipment, for the calibration of the instruments, and for the solution of any temperature problems that arise. In approaching this subject two questions present themselves: What should be the character of the instruction in pyrometry in an engineering school, and what can be expected of the students who have had this instruction? In brief, it may be said that the aims of a course in pyrometry should be to give: (1) A thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of thermoelectric, resistance, radiation, and optical pyrometry, and of liquid and gas thermometry; (2) practical instruction in the calibration of pyrometers; (3) acquaintance with the errors that are likely to arise and the precautions that must be observed in practice; (4) information regarding the limitations of the various classes of instruments, their relative reliability, and the accuracy attainable with them at different temperatures; (5) acquaintance with the commercial instruments on the market, their construction and relative merits; (6) a knowledge of the chief sources of information relating to the measurement of high and low temperatures. THE present system of competitive exploitation of oil pools results in losses, both of petroleum and of profits. Under a competitive system the owner produces or withholds his product according to the price, which reflects the demand, but in the pe-troleum industry the producer does not have complete control over the expansion and contraction of his out-put. Under a series of court decisions, reviewed in detail in the paper, petroleum is not covered by- the general theory of English common law that the owner of land owns everything from the center of the earth to the sky within the areal limits of his property, but is considered to be his only when he has reduced it. to possession, which he can only do by taking it out of the ground. If A can obtain possession of the petro-leum which is beneath the property of B without tres-passing on B's property he commits no legal wrong and B has no defense except to get it into his (surface) possession before A takes it. No one would expect an. owner under such a system to forego the possibility of securing some oil from his property in order to in-crease the ultimate production of the pool. The pe-troleum industry. should offer a constructive program, that will eliminate losses and protect the interests of individuals as far as possible. If improved methods of oil recovery can be applied the quantity of petroleum recovered might be double or even treble the amount recovered by ordinary procedure. But increased recovery is not the only benefit from pool development. In brief, the following advantages can be claimed for unit operation: 1. Saving in development and operating costs. 2. Less danger of damage to the fields by defective wells. 3. Development is better gaged to fit market demand and to effect the most efficient recovery of oil. 4. More oil, gas, and gasoline can be marketed. 5. By regulating pressures, recovery .of oil and gas will be greater and the wells will flow longer. Reagan County (Big Lake), Rainbow Bend and Cabin Creek are examples of longer life of pools thus obtained.

Much has been written of late regarding the flotation of coal as a means of reclaiming the valuable portion of the fines encountered in nearly all methods of coal preparation. Whether the process be wet or dry, whether the dust be sent through the entire process or removed prior to the cleaning by some such method as screening or aspiration, one of the final products consists of a considerable proportion of — 48-mesh material. The percentage of this —48-mesh material depends upon the mining method, transportation, storage, and method of preparation. The tonnage of this dust material ranges from 1 to 10 per cent of the total output of the cleaning plants. Four methods of disposal are available for this coal: 1. Disposal with the refuse from the plant. 2. Addition, after being reclaimed from the wash water, or dust collectors, without cleaning to the larger sizes. 3. Separate disposal as a pulverized fuel. 4. Cleaning so that addition to the larger sizes benefits the product as a whole. It is also true that flotation in one form or another is the only known way to effectively clean this material. While some processes do a reasonable cleaning job down to and including +l00 mesh, by far the greater majority stop at or short of the + 48-mesh size. Much of the literature on coal flotation passes by the fred pulp density and size by merely stating that the feed varies from 20 to 30 per cent solids and that the size range is from — 1/4 in. or — 1/8 in. to 0. Small wonder then that some operators with entirely different conditions, and not knowing the machine capacity, throw up their hands in despair when flotation is mentioned. Too much parallel is drawn between flotation methods as applied to ores and as applied to coal, to the detriment of the latter. In the flotation of metalliferous ores the feed pulp density ranges from 20 to 30 per cent solids, depending upon the amount of mineral to be floated and upon the size analysis. The mining district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line—the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. • The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. History The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in. the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties. A period of development followed in which the majority of the present producing mines were opened. The Elkoro Mines Co. acquired a number of claims in 1915 and started work on the present mill in 1917. Since that time other properties have been taken over until this company is by far the largest operator in the district. THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose mill be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others ? This is the question with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students' preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads: 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mine; and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Reslts of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.—During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plan; and aims of this laboratory. Since that time me have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convineed that me are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers have school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. DARKEN1 has pointed out that in most binary liquid metal systems the thermodynamic behavior is relatively simple in the terminal regions. Between the terminal regions. the thermodynamic behavior is more complex. To describe this behavior. he has defined the stability and the excess stability as shown: Qualitatively, an inflection in the free energy of mixing curve results in a change in sign, from positive to negative, of the stability function and is associated with a phase separation. Conversely, a large, positive stability over a narrow composition range is indicative of compound formation. Darken has shown a number of binary systems where the excess stability is constant in the terminal regions and varies sharply in between. The work described in this communication was undertaken to study the variation of stability and excess stability in a binary system as a function of temperature. In addition, this work provides means for the direct comparison of previously existing equilibrium (activity) and calorimetric (molar heat of mixing) data on the Hg-Sn system. Hildebrand2 measured the vapor pressure of mercury over Hg-Sn alloys at 595°K. Calorimetric studies were made by Kawakami3 at 523°K and by Kleppa4 at 423°K. In this work, the equilibrium vapor pressure of mercury was measured over a series of Hg-Sn alloys at 453" and 503°K by use of fused salt manometer with one arm exposed to mercury vapor. Deflections of the fused salt manometer were balanced by argon pressure on the other arm. Argon pressure was subsequently measured with a dibutyl phthalate manometer. Tin activities were determined by graphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation making use of the familiar Darken5 a function. The activities of mercury and tin showed positive deviation from Raoult's law at 453 and 503°K as Hildebrand observed at 595 K. In Fig. 1 are plotted log activity of mercury and tin vs reciprocal temperature. The plot contains activities obtained from calorimetric studies. Hult-gren6 has calculated activities from Kleppa's4 data, and Kubaschewski7 has similarly treated Kawakami's7 data. Presumably. in each case a regular solution was assumed. It has long been recognized that it would be highly desirable to be able to predict the temperatures at various points in a burning fuel bed and their variations with changes of the properties of the fuel and the rate of air supply. Experimenta1 investigations of fuel-bed temperature1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical background has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general may. A mathematical analysis", based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of lieat in a fuel bed, lias recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not known, the calculations result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calcu1ated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of the coefficients. Theory and Comparison with Experiment The theoretical analysis is similar to that used in the calculation of the stationary temperatures in a conducting solid in the classical theory of heat concluction. The fuel bed is pictured as a uniform, continuous, porous solid through the interstices of which air can be blown and ill which combustion can take place. The smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due.to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at very hig~; efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of 81.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 Dons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. It was originally built in 1900 by Paul Johnson, to handle 600 tons of ore a day in two small furnaces of 300 tons capacity; but in 1907 the old furnaces were torn out, the plant was remodeled, and three blast furnaces, 48 by 240 in. at) the tuyéres, were installed. The reagents now used in flotation consist of various acids or salts, which may be either electrolytes or non-electrolytes, dissolved in water and some substance or combination of substances which function as collecting or frothing agents. At times the only dissolved salts present are those naturally occurring in the water used. The general effect of the electrolyte is to greatly sharpen the separation between the gangue and the concentrate. Examples of this are: The use of sulphuric acid with zinc ores; and of sodium carbonate or calcium oxide (lime) with silver-gold ores. Crude pyroligneous acid is also sometimes used when avail able. Various oxidizing agents, such as permanganates, bichromates, etc., are added in the selective flotation of lead-zinc ores. Many other reagents for performing certain specific functions, either real or imaginary, have been proposed, and a number of them have been tried upon a working scale. The wild orgy of experimentation which is now going on in flotation exceeds even that which followed the introduction of the Washoe process for the treatment of Comstock ores, when, among other things, sage-brush tea and tobacco juice were reagents added to the pans. Out of all this will, of course, eventually come a more or less standard practice for the treatment of each class of ore. Omitting a discussion of the functions of frothing and collecting agents, the reagents used in flotation for this purpose may be classified under five general heads: (1) Essential oils; (2) fixed or fatty oils; (3) alcohols and their combinations with organic acids; (4) coal tar and its refined products; (5) petroleum and its refined products. A flotative agent of some kind is required in flotation as now practiced. A single reagent, as, for example, certain of the essential oils, may perform the dual function of frothing and collecting agent, or a mixture of substances may be required. In this country, the essential oils used have been wood products, and have been almost exclusively confined to the steam-distilled pine oils. At the present time, the supply of these is limited, and the cost almost prohibitive, so that their use has been dispensed with as far as possible. The active development of the vast East Texas oil field, the attendant effects of the rapidly increasing flow from its prolific wells and the efforts to bring order out of chaos precluded or dwarfed other oil development in Texas during 1931. In a paper by Dr. F. H. Lahee1 presented at the October, 1931, meeting, the early history of the East Texas oil field is described and the sequence of events in connection with its development and efforts to control its production up to Sept. 25 is narrated. At that time the Railroad Commission of the state reduced the production of the field to a maximum of 400,000 bbl. per day by restricting the allowable daily production per well to 185 bbl. By further reduction in the daily production per well to 100 bbl., the field was held below that maximum figure during the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, as a result of an injunction against the Railroad Commission, its authority in the field was superseded on Oct. 13 by the Governor of the state, and after that date production was controlled directly by his orders issued under authority of martial law. Suits to contest this authority were brought in the Federal courts and were pending at the close of the year. On March 5, 1931, as a result of the East Texas production, posted prices for Mid-Continent 40' A.P.I. crude slumped from $1.07 to $0.67. As East Texas production continued to mount, posted prices in East Texas were reduced to $0.37 on June 3 and $0.22 on July 8, although in that field most of the oil was sold for much less, bringing the producer and royalty owner as low as $0.025 per barrel. Northeast Texas To the information contained in Dr. Lahee's paper, it can now be added that the East Texas field has produced over 105,000,000 bbl. and registered about 3700 successful completions during 1931. There may be some merit to the recent prediction that a large part of the field will have passed its flowing period by the middle of 1932 unless

In connection with other investigations on the properties and characteristics of chilled-iron car wheels, the question as to the best range of annealing temperatures was raised. Chilled-iron wheels are cast with a chill against the tread and the inside of the flange, the remainder being in sand. The composition of the metal is so chosen that under these conditions the trcad and inside of the flange will show white iron to a depth of from 5/8 to in. (15 to 22 mm.), the remainder of the wheel becoming graph itized or gray. In order to relieve the stresses set up during cooling under such drastic conditions, the wheels are stripped from the mold, while still red hot, piled in a soaking pit, and allowed to cool very slowly from their temperature at stripping. Obviously the most suitable temperature for this annealing is the highest at which no formation of graphite occurs within the white tread and at which the wheels can be stripped from the molds. Inasmuch as no direct determinations have been made of the temperatures at which the formation of graphite takes place in white iron of compositions used in car wheels upon annealing, it was considered worth while to determine these temperatures as a means of establishing the maximum temperatures at which the annealing of the wheels may be carried out. In the course of this work, some incidental observations were made which are of interest in connection with the theory of graphitization in whitc iron. The literature on the subject of the formation of graphite both during cooling at casting and upon annealing is very extensive and can be best studied by reference to a comprehensive discussion of the subject by Hatfie1d.l Perhaps the most important contributions of previous investigation are the following: 1. Whether a given mass of molten iron becomes white, mottled, or gay upon casting, depends on its composition and its rate of cooling through the temperature range of solidification and immediately below. 2. The more rapid the rate of cooling, the less is the extent of graphitization.

The war has caused an increasing scarcity of phosphorus and its well known alloys with copper and tin. At the same time, the production of brass and bronze, nickel-silver, cupro-nickel, and other non-ferrous alloys, has considerably increased. The manufacturers of these products had therefore to secure other materials which would serve their purpose; principally that of a deoxidizer, which could be obtained promptly and regularly. Fortunately these materials, pure carbon-free manganese metal and manganese-copper alloy, were not hard to find—in fact, they were never lost. Manganese in various forms has been used in Europe for more than a century; in this country, however, when manganese was first used, and indeed for a long time thereafter, it was consumed mainly in the manufacture of manganese-bronze. Many foundrymen at that time used manganese-copper with the same freedom as phosphor-copper. Although iron enters into the composition of certain grades of bronze, it is very detrimental to non-ferrous mixtures in general; consequently ferromanganese is not applicable, and therefore pure manganese metal, or the alloy of manganese and copper, technically free from iron and other impurities, is now being generally used. The following are the principal elements having an affinity for oxygen: 1, Sodium. 2, Potassium. 3, Calcium. 4, Strontium. 5, Barium. 6, Magnesium. 7, Aluminum, 8, Phosphorus. 9, Silicon. 10, Manganese. 11, Iron. 12, Zinc. 13, Lead. Each metal has its natural flux, or deoxidizer, in the form of a metal or non-metal which will alloy with it, and has a strong affinity for oxygen. For example, phosphorus, as is well known, acts very beneficially in copper alloys that contain tin. Within the last few years, and particularly since the war began, the .great value of mangancse in nickel alloys has been demonstrated, and one by one the manufacturers of these products have adopted its use. While manganese has not so strong an affinity for oxygen as magnesium, aluminum, or silicon, it is nevertheless sufficiently powerful to reduce any oxide of nickel, copper, or zinc that may be present in the nickel alloy to be purified.

The principal events during the year consisted in the exploitation of the Kirkuk field, the regular operation of the four-million-ton pipe line to the Mediterranean, and the discovery of low-gravity oil on three other structures in the West Tigris (Shergat) area. The Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd. continued the systematic exploitation and exploration of its Kirkuk field, maintaining a carefully unitized operation. Bottom-hole pressure differentials and low gas-oil ratios were maintained. All crude was produced by flowing The cleaning up following the construction of the Mediterranean pipe line, which began deliveries in August, 1934, was completed during the first quarter of 1935. The line easily maintained its rated capacity for the remainder of the year. The Mosul Oilfields, Ltd., through its operating subsidiary, the B.O.D., Ltd., expanded its exploratory organization from 9 to 16 drilling rigs and discovercd 20" A.P.I. crude on the Sadid, Hibbarah and Qasab anticlines. Whether these discoveries will be commercial pools remains to be proved. The Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan field, which was discovered by the I.P.C. in 1928, was extended arid production was found in the Eo-Cretaceous as well as the "Main Limestone" (Eocene, Oligocene and Lower Miocene). Gas caps were found under each of the crests of the West Tigris structures. Negotiations are in progress between the Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. and the Iraq Government for the extension of the Anatolian Railway from the Turkish border to Mosul, with a view to tanking the heavy West Tigris crude to the Mediterranean. The subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd.', the Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., continued to operate its Naft Khaneh field near the Iranian (Persian) border to supply the local Iraq market through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. Somewhat more than 28 million barrels of crude was produced in Iraq during 1935.
