The term lineage was first introduced by Buergerl to denote dendritic branches, grown from a crystal nucleus during solidification from the liquid, with imper- fections in alignment of the order of 10 : to 10-4 cm. These imperfections are associated with distortions of the dendrites caused by the subsequent solidification of the inter-dendritic filling and are illustrated in Fig I. Buerger etched zinc single crystals made by the Bridgman3 method to develop this dendritic pattern and show lineage microscopically. Since maximum crystal growth in face-centered cubic metals occurs along the [IT] directions,2 lineage would appear in copper as small deviations of dendritic branches from these directions. Elam4 and others5"8 reported etching effects resulting from coring along the cube face traces of various copper alloy crystals. These traces were used by Samans8 to orient single crystals. Williamson9 noted a "lined structure (in alpha brass single crystals) consisting of an ordered arrangement of etch pits" which were probably traces of {IOO} planes but somewhat uncertain because they were never straight (that is, apparently lineage). Greningerl1 described the distortion and multiplicity of Laue spots in back reflection X ray photograms of copper single crystals showing lineage. The present investigation -includes metal-lographic, X ray, and property studies of lineage in large grain and single crystal specimens of copper. Preparation of Specimens specilnens 10 in. long 35 1/2 in. diam of oxygen-free copper (o.F.H.c.) (99.985 pet) were' melted vertically in graphite crucibles under an atmosphere of commercial nitrogen purified through a gas train including sulfuric acid, potassium chloride, magnesium chiorate, hot copper chips and phosphorus pentoxide. After a temperature of 1200°C had been maintained for 1/2 hr, the furnace was turned off and the specimens cooled at a rate of about 150°c an hour' This method of direct solidification was used by Greningerlo to produce single crystals with marked lineage and in this investigation produced a fair yield of single crystal specimens in

Tensile, creep-rupture, and stability tests were employed to evaluate the effect of a-strengthening and ß-complexing additions on the base composition Ti-6Al-3Mo. The ultimate objective was to produce an alloy of greater strength than the Ti-7A1-3Mo alloy. Strengthening of a was accomplished by additions of 2 and 4 pct Ge, 4 pct Sn, 4 pct Zr, and 2 pct Sn-2 pct Zr. Making the ß more complex while keeping the total of ß-stabilizing additions constant at 3 pct resulted in higher tensile strengths but lower creep and rwpture strengths, especially at 1000°F. None of the more complex versions of the base alloy offers greater promise than the Ti-7A1-3Mo alloy. However, some improvement in the strength of the latter may follow from additions of zirconium perhaps up to 4 pct. PREVIOUS work directed at the development of titanium-base alloys with: 1) minimum room-temperature tensile elongation of 10 pct in 1 in., 2) high creep resistance at elevated temperature, and 3) the ability to retain original room temperature tensile ductility following exposure to creep conditions at elevated temperatures, demonstrated Ti-Al-Mo ternary compositions in the range 5 to 7 pct Al-3 to 6 pct Mo to be the most promising. Of this group the Ti-7Al-3Mo alloy was the strongest.'-= The objective of the present work was to determine if alloys of this type could be further strengthened by making additions which dissolve preferentially in the a-phase and by making the ß-phase more complex. For this study the base composition Ti-6Al-3Mo was selected rather than Ti-7Al-3Mo in order to minimize the possibility that in a more complex alloy with a-strengthening additions, low ductility might obscure the strength contribution. 5.3-1. General Public Resistance to Strip Mining. Surface (strip) mining is the oldest recorded method of extracting coal and other minerals from the earth. This method of mining completely alters the topography of the earth's surface, leaving an area of more or less parallel ridges or of peaked mounds of the materials which overlay the mineral seam. It destroys all original vegetation and provides materials for new type soil. During the early years the acreage mined by this method was small, land was plentiful, and with a growing young nation no thought was given to the restoration of the disturbed areas to some form of productive use. Early in the present century the development of steam shovels and drag-lines made it possible to remove thicker overburden to recover the products. With the deeper digging, the size of the disturbed areas increased. With this increase in the size of equipment and the improvement of blasting techniques, mining was expanded into more prominent locations and to areas of more valuable land. The more progressive operators became aware of the need to reclaim those areas for some productive use. Electric shovels with capacities of up to 200 cu yd and draglines with capacities of 145 cu yd, capable of uncovering products over 100 ft below the surface, are now in use. Combined with the increase in the size of equipment, the expansion of contour mining or rim stripping in the mountainous areas has focused public attention on the need for a sound reclamation program for all disturbed areas. APPEARANCE. After mining, the areas consist of varying percentages of rock, shale, slate, and soil material devoid of all plant and animal life. Unless a definite reclamation plan is carried out, many of the mined areas will remain bare for a period of years. The topography of the area is completely altered. What may have been level to rolling land in cultivation, in grass, or in timber is thrown up into a series of ridges or mounds.

The success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible application of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thoroughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. Apparatus The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sixes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. I. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8-in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. The large standard hammer shown against the wall was also used for some of the unnotched bars that required more than 20 ft.-lb. to rupture. The study of cobalt-platinum alloys has been of interest since they represent a class of permanent-magnet material in which the disorder-to-order transformation plays a controlling role. The magnetic properties of alloys in the range 40 to 60 at. pct have been found to be greatly influenced by composition and heat-treatment. The peak properties of 4700 coercive force and 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds energy product were obtained by controlled cooling and aging. These high values combined with ductility and machin-ability give the alloys useful characteristics although their high cost limits their application. THE cobalt-platinum alloys have been of interest in the study of permanent-magnet materials ever since the discovery by Jellinghaus that they had unusually high coerceive-force values.' The high coercive force was associated by Jellinghaus with the disorder-order reaction which occurred in these alloys. This was later verified by Gebhardt and Koster in a detailed study.2 An investigation of the structure, mechanism, and kinetics of the disorder-order transformation and resulting property changes in cobalt-platinum alloys has been in progress for some years. Certain phases of this study related to equilibrium rela- tions, and to the mechanism and kinetics of the ordering reaction have been published previously.3-5 In this paper, the results of the processing and heat-treatment studies on 40 to 60 at. pct CO alloys are presented. The magnetic properties have been found to be influenced greatly by the composition, by the cooling rate from the disordering treatment, and the final ordering time and temperature. Coercive force values, Hc, of 4700 oersteds and energy values, (BH)m, approaching 9,000,000 gauss-oersteds have been obtained by controlled cooling and ordering. The equilibrium pressure of nitrogen gas over pure silicon metal and silicon nitride has been measured in the temperature range 1400° to 1700°C. From the experimental data, the standard free energies and enthalpies of formation of Si3N4(a) have been calculated as functions of temperature over the above temperature range. Utilizing data in the literature and the results of this investigation, the specific heat, molar enthalpy, molar entropy, standard enthalpy of fornation, and standard free energy of fornation are estimated for the temperature range 298° to 1400°C. THE high-temperature thermodynamic properties of many metallic nitrides are not well established at present. This is a serious deficiency because nitrogen and nitride-forming metals are important alloying additions to steels, and knowledge of the interaction between nitrogen and these elements is essential to a better understanding of the behavior of steels. Metallic nitrides also are used as refractory materials. Consequently, the investigation reported here was undertaken to provide more complete information on the standard entropy and free energy of formation of silicon nitride. The experimental technique provided a direct measurement of the equilibrium pressure of nitrogen gas in the range of 1413 to 1700°C for the reaction: 3 Si(1) + 2N2 (g) = Si3N4 (a) [ 1 ] and below 1413oC for the reaction: 3Si(c) + 2N2(g) = Si3N4(a) [2] APPARATUS The experimental system consisted of a crucible assembly, a reaction chamber, and a gas supply and vacuum system. The Crucible Assembly which contained the equilibration specimen and molybdenum radiation shields with a susceptor for induction heating is shown in Fig. 1. Two covered, high-purity alumina crucibles, one nested within the other, contained the susceptor, shields and specimen. Central openings in the upper shield and crucible covers permitted on optical pyrometer to be sighted into the central cavity of the specimen. The specimen itself was a 5/8 OD by 1-in.

For the purpose of obtaining some first-hand data in regard to the shooting down of coal in bituminous mines, it was the writer's good fortune to be employed as a shot-firer for almost one year. In all, 6020 shots were fired by him during this period. All of the work was done in what is known as the South Main section of the No. 2 Mine of the Ellsworth Collieries Co., Ellsworth, Pa., a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Steel Go. Position of Shot-firing in the Cycle of Operations The established practice of the Ellsworth Collieries Co. calls first for the undercutting of the coal by electric chain machines across the face of the entry or room. This is followed by replacing any posts removed by the machine-runners, or the setting of new posts or timber, as may be required. After this has been done the machine cuttings are loaded into cars. Then the coal is spragged, and a shot hole drilled to the depth of the undercut. Next in order, the shot-firer loads the hole and fires the charge. The working place is then cleaned up, timbered if necessary, the sides and face squared up, and loose material taken down. The face is again ready to be undercut. Materials Used Permissible explosives were used exclusively in blasting coal. These were Carbonite No. 2, a nitroglyccrine explosive; and three different makes of ammonium nitrate explosives, Tunnelite, Red H, and Mine-ite 5-D. The last-named was used during the greater part of the period. It is interesting to note that even at the beginning of this work, the gases resulting from the explosions of the charges caused no especial distress on. the shot-firer's part and this continued to be the case except on the occasions when a change was made from one class of explosive to another.

The Gold Acres outcrop was located by Lee Lakin in 1922, according to Mr. H. W. Treweek. There was no activity, however, until 1935, when prospect drifts and pits penetrated the deposit. It was then drilled by the Willow Creek Mining Company. Beginning in the late 1930s and continuing to the late 1940s more than 150 churn drill holes were drilled in the Gold Acres area. From this drilling came what is now known as the London Extension pit. Only oxidized ore amenable to cyanide vat leaching was mined during this time. Our records indicated that this period of mining removed some 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore at an average grade of 0.006 kg/ t (0.2 oz per st). Union Pacific and Newmont Mining Company worked in the area prior to acquisition by the Cortez Joint Venture. Union Pacific drilled a number of core holes in the area. The unoxidized nature of the ore, small tonnage, and low grade undoubtedly prevented mining at this time. From these indications of mineralization shown by previous companies, the Cortez Joint Venture developed and mined 2 Mt (2.4 million st) at 0.005 kg/t (0.15 oz per st) in the Gold Acres pit. This pit is located immediately southwest of the older London Extension pit. Cortez Gold Mines has continued to drill to the west and south of these pits along the downdip continuation of the former ore bodies. The downdip extension is unoxidized and more metallurgically difficult than the normal Carlin type ores, but, more than 2.4 Mt (2.7 million st) have been outlined. It depends now upon the gold price and milling costs to turn this mineralized area into an ore body. A possible lesson to be learned from this deposit is that continued mining success depends upon an ongoing adequately funded exploration-development-metallurgical research program. These three disciplines must always be present to locate the mineralization and to turn this mineralization into ore. [ ]

Discussion of the paper of A. L. Sweetser, Tress., xxxviii., 236. CHARLES H. WHITE, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Those interested in leaching-processes gladly welcome contributions on either laboratory-tests, such as are reported by Mr. Sweetser, or mill-tests made on larger quantities of ore; and especially valuable are such reports, even with negative results, if the methods adopted are the outgrowth of an intimate knowledge of the conditions to be met. It seems very desirable, therefore, that as complete details as possible be given in reporting on such tests, particularly with respect to the character of the ore under examination. The questions of prime importance in the sampling of ore and in the making up of charges for laboratory-tests are those respecting its grade and uniformity. In Mr. Sweetser's paper the first of these questions is answered definitely, but the answer to the second, although apparent on inspection of the results, might be more strongly emphasized with advantage, since it is only on account of the extreme uniformity of the ore that the satisfactory results obtained could have been expected. It seems advisable to call attention to the fact that for average ores, and more particularly for uneven, or 11 spotted ores, the quantities used by Mr. Sweetser are not usually regarded as sufficient to insure satisfactory results. Let us examine the method somewhat in detail. The ore was crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, and a sample of 45 lb. was taken out for assay and tests. The diameter of the largest grain of this ore, according to Richards,1 was 2.67 mm.-assuming here, as in the following cases, that the wire of the screen was of the largest size used for the purpose, thereby giving any possible advantage in this respect in favor of the method. The table in Richards's book, p. 852, shows that 45 lb. is a sufficient quantity for a fair sample with uniform ores, but not sufficient

In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year's day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio's band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of' Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio's band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. The principal interest in the oil situation in Colombia during the year centered around the enactment of the new petroleum law and the applications for concessions subsequently made by various interests. The year was a comparatively uneventful one from the standpoint of actual operations of drilling and development. There was a falling off both in exploratory work and in the development of producing properties; and as a result of curtailment of production, the output of oil from the country dropped to the lowest level since the completion of the looping of the Andian pipe line to the coast in 1927. Legislation Law No. 371 of 1931, with its Regulatory Decree No. 1270, was enacted during the year and marked Colombia's attempt to encourage more extensive exploration and development of the prospective oil resources of the country. Some of the outstanding provisions of the law are as follows: Tracts may be acquired by a concessionnaire directly and by transfer ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 hectares, except in certain reserved territories east of the summit of the eastern cordilleras where the maximum is increased to 200,000 ha. A security deposit of $1 per hectare, minimum $25,000, is required on government grants, and is returned to the concessionnaire only upon the fulfillment of stipulated terms of the law. Rentals, increasing progressively from 10c per hectare per year the first two years to 50c per hectare the sixth year, are required up to the start of the production period (beginning of development). The concession terminates 30 years after the beginning of the production period and can be extended for 10 years more at the option of the contractor. Wells must be produced at no less than 25 per cent of their maximum capacity. Royalties on oil from national lands vary from 2 to 11 per cent of the gross product, depending on the distance of the concession from the port of loading. HIGH-IRON cements have a number of advantages over cements carrying little or no iron. The presence of iron in Portland cement aids in the manufacture of the cement and also imparts certain advantageous physical properties to the finished product. In manufacture, the presence of iron lowers the fuel consumption, increases the ease of proper burning, and lessens the destructive action of the charge on the kiln refractories. In the finished cement the presence of iron reduces the expansion and contraction, adds strength, adds increased resistance to freezing and thawing, and increases the resistance of the cement to sea or sulphate waters. During the past few years the construction of numerous dams throughout the Southeast by the Tennessee Valley Authority has stimulated the production of high-iron cements. At present a great number of specifications call for an iron cement, and the industry is supplying this demand with a Portland cement carrying approximately 5 per cent iron oxide. Several manufacturers are now making practically all of their cement of this type and a number of others manufacture it as a special cement over short periods to meet demands from the Tennessee Valley Authority and other buyers. The recent increase in the use of iron in Portland cement has created a market for iron products that previously was nonexistent. The chief sources of supply for the cement manufacturers at present are iron sand, iron sinter and slag, and ocher. The Copperhill mining district, Tennessee, supplies both iron sinter and slag for use in cement. The Cartersville district supplies iron sand, ocher, and some iron resulting from the magnetic separation of iron from barite. The advantages of these products vary according to the chemical properties of the raw materials and the methods of handling used by the different manufacturers. The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft. elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 lb. pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 ½ miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in. Fig. 3.

I will endeavor to describe the methods of silver-mining and smelting employed by the natives in Mongolia. Modern methods have been applied there, but with little success; and, since they are familiar to most members of the Institute, I will simply mention that the failure was due to the high price of coke used in smelting the ore in modern furnaces, and to the unsuitable mill-machinery employed for concentrating the galena, which is finely distributed in the ore. The Jehol silver-mines are situated about 45 miles NE. of Jehol, the capital of Mongolia. They embrace two mines, 5 miles apart,—the Ku Shan Tze mine and the Yen Tung Shan mine. They were first worked by natives 50 years ago, about the time when mining was so flourishing in other parts of the world,—for instance, in California and Australia. The upper part of the vein is galena mixed with iron-stone, and is 2 to 4 ft. thick. At lower levels the vein is composed of silver-lead ore running between quartz-porphyry walls. Limestone, talc and black shale, colored by graphite, are found in other parts of the mine. Crystalline limestone is found 1 mile NE. of Ku Shan Tze. Granite is encountered in the Yen Tung Shan mine. Mining.—The native method of working the mines is most primitive. The same method may have been employed a thousand years ago. A small inclined shaft, 4 ft. by 4 ft., is sunk in the vein-stuff where the appearances are most favorable. Another shaft is sunk 20 or 30 yds. away, for ventilation. The shaft follows the vein in a zigzag fashion in whatever direction the vein appears to be richest. Timber is used only in soft ground. Where the ground is hard, the roof is cut into an arch-form. In some places, instead of using ladders, steps are cut in the rock, just wide enough to hold one foot. The deepest native workings are 400 ft. below the

The following descriptions and explanations apply specifically to the use of the Hotchkiss Superdip, but there are no apparent reasons why they should not apply to any magnetometer. This paper is a product of work in the practical field for several years with the Hotchkiss magnetometer, mostly on mineral deposits in the southeastern United States. The paper describes the result of an attempt to develop a practical and economical field method that approaches, as nearly as possible, the utmost accuracy of which the magnetometer is capable. As there are many published descriptions of various magnetometers and magnetic methods, it would be superfluous to describe such instruments here, but a limited bibliography on the Hotchkiss and Askania magnetometers is appended. The Hotchkiss and the vertical Askania magnetometers have, respectively, maximum sensitivities of approximately 5 and 30 gamma per instrument scale division. Purpose of New Method The purpose of the method described in the following paragraphs is to eliminate, as far as possible, all corrections of field data that cause complexities and inaccuracies in the results of magnetometer surveys. Magnetometer field observations must be corrected for periodic variations in the intensity of the earth's magnetic field, as well as for temperature variations, both of which take place during the course of a day. These variations do not seriously handicap magnetometer work on highly magnetic deposits, but it is impossible to obtain accurate results, by the conventional methods in use today, over weakly magnetic or diamagnetic deposits. This is due to the physical inability to obtain by such methods sufficiently accurate data in the field to make dependable corrections. The magnitude of the necessary corrections of field observations frequently exceeds the magnitude of local magnetic anomalies obtained over various types of mineral deposits. Therefore if these corrections are neglected or made on the basis of inaccurate data, the entire magnetic picture of the area concerned is at least distorted, and perhaps destroyed altogethcr.

The orientation of metal crystals and grains, both large and small, can be detcrmined conveniently and accurately without the use of X-ray apparatus. This seems to be appreciated by so few metallurgists that it may be useful to explain in detail the method we have found most satisfactory in the laboratory—the reflection of light from crystallographie etch pits. This note includes a description of a suitable inexpensive instrument and instructions for etching various metals and for plotting the data. As the stereographie projection is used to facilitate handling the data, this note may he considered as an appendix to an earlier review of the metallurgical uses of the stercographie projection.' Various methods involving etch pits have been used by other investigators. Bridgman's method2 consists of attaching the specimen to a sphere (a transparent sphere is convenient4 , holding it at arm's length, and marking a spot on it when it has been turned so that the eteh pits reflect light into the eye of the observer from a lamp standing behind him. It has an accuracy of about 2" and is extrernely rapid. A greater accuracy can be obtained by having the reflected light fall on a screen, as has been done by Czochralski,5 Chalmers,6 and Schubnikov.7 All of these methods have been intended for undeformed single crystals. Tammann and his coworkers3,8 developed a method for estimating the number of grains in a polyerystalline aggregate having orientations in a given region of the stereographic triangle and thus obtained statistical information about deformation and reerystallization textures. While the method has had some use in recent years,9 it is not applicable to the majority of problems in physical metallurgy. Smith and Mehl10 determined orientations by plotting the directions of the sides of individual etch pits on a stereographic projection. The accuracy is limited to about 3" and the method requires careful polishing and high magnification.

Hadfielcl steel has been studied by transmission electron microscopy to determine the microsl.rtic-ture of the cold-worked material, which has been a subject of controversy for many years. The presence of fcc deformation twins in specimens deformed in tension, by hamnzering, and by explosive -shock loading at room temperature lzas been established by electron diffraction. No evidence of a mar tensite was detected in any of the speciwens. Small amounts of E martensite were idenLified in the hamnleved specimens. DESPITE numerous researches on Hadfield steel since its discovery in 1882, there is still disagreement on the nature of transformations in the cold-worked material. Collette el al.,' using X-ray and electron diffraction, have found evidence for stacking faults, E martensite, and a martensite in Hadfield steel deformed in tension at room temperature. Nishiyama and Simizu,' using electron microscopy, have found stacking faults and E martensite in hammered Hadfield steel. White and Honeycombe have concluded from X-ray diffraction that Hadfield steel remains fully austenitic even after severe cold work at -196 Previous work by the author, indicating the presence of a, martensite in deformed Hadfield steel, was in error due to a faulty interpretation of the electron-diffraction patterns. Various workers,5'7 over the years, have speculated on the presence of deformation twins in Hadfield steel, largely from such circumstantial evidence as the persistence of slip bands with repeated polishing and etching, the presence of serrations in the stress-strain curve, and the absence of evidence of a martensite by X-ray measurements. The advent of electron-transmission microscopy and se- lected-area diffraction has made possible the positive identification of fine deformation twinning. PROCEDURE For tensile tests, standard ASTM specimens of 2-in. gage length, ground from 0.12-in. Hadfield steel sheet, were solution-treated at 1050°C for 30 min in a salt bath, to avoid decarburization, and water-quenched. The grain size was about 0.01 sq mm. GOLD MOVEMENT ON SURFACE OF AURIFEROUS COPPER WHEN LATTER IS SUBJECTED TO OXIDATION SOME years ago the writer's attention was called to the fact that rolling-mill scales from auriferous copper do not have the gold content proportional to the gold contained in the copper from which they are derived. I So, later, he made a few simple experiments, which are described herewith. In: order to test the gold movement on the changing surface of a copper plate under the influence of oxidation, plates 6 in. by 8 in. by I in. (15.2 cm. by 20.3 cm. by 2.5 cm.) of converter copper, refined, of 99.29 per cent. purity, and leaded copper with a content of 95.65 per cent. copper, were obtained. Ten cuts were made through the thickness of the plates along the longitudinal center and the silver and gold content ascertained in each of the 10 samples in both plates, as shown in the accompanying illustration. The assay results, recorded in Tables 1 and 2, show that the gold distribution is relatively uniform in both plates, while silver has greater variations, especially in the leaded plate. The plates subjected to oxidation were placed in a red-hot muffle for about 2 hr., two small scorifiers being used as supports. Arranged alongside each other, they nearly filled the width of the muffle, and so were practically under equal conditions of heat and draft. The accurate observance of the time was not possible, however, because of other work, but the time of the exposure of each plate in a pair was identical. At the end of each period, each plate was plunged into water and completely freed of scale, which was carefully collected, dried, weighed, and analyzed. Samples of the plates had also been taken of the molten metal and duly analyzed. Table 3 contains the analytical data for the two plates and their several sheets, or layers, of oxide scales.
