An equation is derived describing fragment size for single fracture of brittle solids. It contains the equations of earlier workers as special or approximate cases and, in addition, is capable of describing coarse distributions in which a few large particles are produced on fracture. The equation can be fitted well to single fracture experiments where over-breakage is avoided. In 1956 Broadbent and callcottl described a method of analyzing the unit operation of grinding, applicable to homogeneous breakage of brittle materials. In essence, the grinding process was split into two parts: 1) the fractional amount of a given size which is selected for grinding per unit time, 2) the size-weight distribution of the fragments produced by breakage of this certain size (primary breakage distribution function). The theory was formulated using matrix algebra. They attempted an experimental verification of the theory using an assumed primary breakage distribution but the results were not very satisfactory. Austin and Gardner2 showed that this assumed distribution was widely different from experimental values and that it led to the poor agreement of predicted size-weight distributions with experiment found by Broadbent and Callcott. In addition, Austin and Gardner2,3,4 reformulated the original approach in terms of differential equations of grinding and demonstrated that the approach led to a very satisfactory description of the grinding process, providing that the descriptive parameters were measured experimentally. Recent work5 has substantiated these findings and the distribution functions of several materials ground under different conditions in different mills have been determined experimentally. THE subject assigned is so broad that thorough discussion is well-night impossible within the space allotted, and further, few specific data are available upon which to predicate conclusions concerning the efficiency of present methods of distributing anthracite. This paper treats briefly the various agencies through which both primary and secondary distribution are effected, the methods of transportation and the general interrelation of production, demand, inventories and price. AVENUES OF DISTRIBUTION "Three distinct types of primary distribution are common in the marketing of anthracite. First, though not most important, is the sale by the producer, or operator, direct to the consumer. These sales, other than to employees and the local trade, are generally confined to steam sizes for industrial uses, and are consigned to the sidings or docks of the consumer. Sales of this type often are so closely priced to compete with oil and bituminous that the addition of even a small dealer's margin is sufficient to increase the cost to the point where the business might be lost. Second, the operator sells to a wholesaler or broker for subsequent resale, either to a retail dealer for clearance through his yard or direct to large consumers. Usually this method of distribution is employed by the smaller operators, who do not find it economically feasible to maintain extensive sales organizations. In most instances, the wholesaler retains some 5 per cent for his services, paid, of course, by the producing company whose anthracite he handles. WHEN Magma Copper Company in 1952 set about finding $100,000,000 to finance the project of developing and equipping the property of its lusty progeny, the San Manuel Copper Corporation, A. J. McNab, president and guiding genius for both companies (and incidentally a mining engineer by profession), determined that he would avoid the mistake frequently made in such circumstances, of underestimating the cost, and thereby running short of funds before the job was completed. The fear that this might happen was one of the reasons why insurance companies, one potent source of "big" money, were reluctant to finance the enterprise. How, they asked themselves, would Magma, a relatively small company, get additional money in such a contingency? Insurance officials' thumbs were turned down. Conditions Imposed by R.F.C. The upshot was the negotiation by Mr. McNab for San Manuel of a contract with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, dated July 10, 1952, whereby needed monies in amount up to $94,000,000 would be advanced as a loan, bearing 5 per cent interest. Arrangements were made for the separate financing of the new $10,000,000 town, needed for the project, through the Del E. Webb Construction Company of Phoenix, Arizona, and M.O.W. Homes, Incorporated, of Los Angeles. Thus the $94,000,000 drawing account was believed ample to provide for building the railroad, the mine plant, the concentrator, and the smelter, as well as for the underground development of the mine needed to start production. COMPARED with the equipment used in most industrial processes, the open-hearth furnace has a relatively short life. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. This discussion of the physics and chemistry of the individual refractory materials will keep upper- most the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" CAUSES OF FAILURE The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance: 1.Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. Spalling. 6. Mechanical breakage. Reaction with Iron Oxides and Slag. Reaction with iron oxides and slag is by far the most important cause of failure. Liquid iron oxide comes near to being the "universal solvent" sought for by the alchemists. Among the materials commonly used in the open-hearth furnace, magnesia has the greatest resistance to this liquid and fireclay the least. The relations of iron and oxygen at high temperatures are illustrated in Fig 14-18. The liquid iron oxide that forms wherever iron is in contact with air or combustion gases cannot be given a definite formula. The percentage of oxygen at steelmaking temperatures may range from 21 to 28 (iron 79 to 72), depending upon the temperature and the oxygen pressure and also upon whether or not the liquid is in equilibrium with metallic iron. Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communica, tion to the Secretary): I have been much interested in Mr. Schmitz's description of the copper-ore bed in the Permian formation of Texas. He compares it with the Mansfeld Kupferschiefer; but it seems to me to present closer analogies with a small deposit on the same side of the Atlantic, in Nova Scotia, which I examined in 1877. I quote entirely from my fieldnotes, made then, and from specimens still in my possession. These copper-deposits are known in several places; but I examined them at the village of New Annan, on the banks of the French river. This district has been determined by Sir J. W. Dawson as being of Permian age, and this determination seems to have been confirmed as recently as 1891 by the operations of the Canadian Geological Survey. The following is the section, very imperfectly exposed in a few shallow levels, described in ascending order: Red sandstone, moderately fissile and markedly false-bedded. Lower nodule-bed, 1 inch to 6 inches thick, of fissile mica, ceous sandstone, containing obscure plant-remains converted into anthracite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and iron pyrites. Very coarse grit or, in places, red sandstone; thickness and character variable. Upper nodule-bed, 6 inches to 2 feet thick exceptionally, generally about 10 inches. Soft, gray, friable shaly sandstone, with nodules of copper-ore. Red sandstone. All these strata lie flat, in places quite horizontal, in places dipping towards the river at 5° to 10°.

IN an age when anything short of miraculous can and does happen it is entirely too easy to become labeled as a prophet. After the first wave of hysteria over atomic weapons died down there were crystal gazers enough in that field. The mining fraternity, always anxious to get back to normal anyway, looked, was duly impressed, and passed on to more mundane affairs. After all it was just another big blast in the stopes of life. After we "laymen" had seen the effects at Hiroshima and been granted a peek into the phenomenon of Numbers 4 and 5, we saw, indeed, that it was a tremendous but understandable weapon. Now it appears that we may fall heir to much of the defensive planning of the future. If, as our military planners tell us, it will be necessary to go underground for defense, then we are the true forerunners of a race of troglodytes. The underground belongs to us as to no other profession; the subsurface is our prerogative. Already the big mistakes in planning atomic defense are being made. It is within our ability now to correct them. Surveys are being made of natural caverns to be used as a basis for military planning. This is our first big mistake. Even if the natural caverns, many of which Nature has precariously carved from cherty and brittle limestones, could withstand the seismic force of a proximate blast without major roof failures, there is a more serious argument against the blanket use of natural caverns as a first line of defense. THE total crude production from the Dutch East Indies, and the British Protectorates of Sarawak and Brunei for 1932 is given in the following table: BARRELS BARRELS (42 GAL.) (42 GAL.) Exploitation drilling in the majority of the larger fields was suspended and existing production kept within predetermined limits by beaning. Most of the smaller fields were shut down entirely. The depth of producing levels varies widely in the different fields. Shallow fields with drilling depths to 500 meters (1650 ft.) are still numer-ous as well as those with depths between 500 and 1000 m. (3300 ft.). A few of the newer fields reach greater drilling depths. up to 1600 m. (5250 ft.). The deepest exploration well drilled to date (Djambi field, South Sumatra) reached a depth of 2332 m. (7650 ft.) before abandon-ment in March, 1930. The specific gravities of the various crude oils produced range between 0.65 (86.2° A.P.I.) and 0.95 (17.5° A.P.I.). The lighter crudes have a high gasoline content and fuel oils are derived from the heavier crudes, which usually are rich in paraffin.

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stimulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as. large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past Chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active Sections to the, welfare of the Institute as a whole. 6. According to Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, requests for appropriations shall be signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Section. 7. Requests for appropriations must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by February 15 of the year for which they are desired.

THE activity of carbon in Fe-C-Cr liquid solutions has been measured by Richardson and Dennis,1 Fuwa and chipman,2 and Goto et aL3 Fuwa and Chipman2 have presented their data along with data of Richardson and Dennis1 and utilized an interaction parameter. However, the interaction parameter is only valid for dilute solutions of carbon, because, as indicated, the same interaction parameter does not apply to more concentrated solutions of carbon (i.e., the effect of chromium on the saturation of graphite in liquid iron). Ohtani4 has attempted to account for the effect of carbon concentration on the interaction parameter; however even his analysis does not apply to the saturation data. Also, the effect of temperature on interaction parameters must be taken into account. Therefore, in any process where the concentration of carbon and/or the temperature changes (such as solidification), the use of an interaction parameter is not adequate to know the activity of carbon. The purpose of this communication is to make use of the existing data on the effect of chromium on the activity of carbon in liquid iron solutions in such a way that the activity can be described as a function of both composition and temperature. The method is an extension of Rist and chipman's5 analysis for the binary Fe-C solutions. The papers and discussion appearing in this volume were presented at a symposium jointly sponsored by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and held at Philadelphia, Pa., November 29, 30, and December 1, 1944. Late in January, 1944, Lieut. Col. C. H. Greenall, Officer-in-Charge of the Laboratory Division, Frankford Arsenal, Ordnance Department, U.S.A., suggested to the American Society for Testing Materials that it might be a propitious time to arrange for a symposium on stress-corrosion cracking at the Annual Meeting of the Society in June, and agreed to make available a number of papers relating to work being carried out at that Arsenal. The Society's Committee B-5 on Copper and Copper Alloys, Cast and Wrought expressed keen interest in the symposium, and other Society committees were contacted and agreed to cooperate. Since the subject is one of primary interest also to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, it was arranged that the two organizations would jointly sponsor the symposium. A Symposium Committee was formed under the joint leadership, for A.S.T.M., of Carter S. Cole, then Chief of the Metals Branch, Conservation Division, War Production Board and now Engineer on the Headquarters Staff of the Society; and, for A.I.M.E., of E. A. Anderson, Chief of Metals Section, Research Division, New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) and chairman of the Program Committee of the Institute of Metals Division. In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical proper-ties such as color, hardness, corrosion resist-ance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,1 E. M. Wise,5 and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that meas-ured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color deter-minations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2,3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. r). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300°F. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point.

The following work, performed by Mr. W. A. Tucker, of the class of 1893, in the mining department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, seems to me to be worthy of publication. I believe it has always been considered that the presence of arsenic especially interferes with the extraction of gold by the cyanide method. Mr. Tucker's work, although made on a laboratory scale, certainly seems to disprove this view, and to show that even with a very large percentage of arsenic present in the ore, a high extraction may be obtained without an excessive consumption of potassic cyanide. The ore from which the concentrates were obtained was a gray argillaceous schist. and slate, with stringers and veins of quartz running through it. It carried free gold and about 12 per cent. of sulphides. The ore was crushed with stamps; the free gold was collected in the ordinary way on silver-amalgamated copper plates; and the sulphides, which consisted chiefly of arsenopyrite and pyrite, with very small amounts of galena and chalcopyrite, were concentrated and collected by means of a Frue vanner. A carefully-taken sample gave: Gold,........6.17 ounces per ton. Arsenic,.......30.6 per cent. The latter figure would correspond to about 66.5 per cent,. of arsenopyrite in the concentrates. The work to be done was outlined as follows: 1. Sizing the concentrates; 2. Assaying the different sizings; 3. Treating these different sizings with ECy of different degrees of strength for different periods of time.

The deepening of the General Crude Oil Company's No. 1 Meyers, NE. NE. SE. of sec. 22, 24S., 36E., in the Cooper area of Lea County, in April, 1934, resulted in the discovery of an oil field of major importance. The discovery well is an old well drilled by Cranfill $ Reynolds and completed in July, 1929, in limestone at 3438 ft. for an initial production of 90,000,000 cu. ft. (estimated) of 'gas. Deepening operations were started early in April, 1934, and cores were taken from the old total depth of 3438 to 3508 ft. A Haliburton test taken through the drill stem at 3439 to 3460 ft. showed 50,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with an increase of 5,000,000 cu. ft. between 3461 and 3474 ft. When completed the well tested 12,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 5000 bbl. of oil at 3474-3508 feet. The new oil field—the result of this discovery—is between the Eunice and the Jal fields, closer to the productive area of Jal than to that of Eunice but far enough away from both to be considered a separate area. Eventually, all of these pools may be joined together by productive oil wells to form a single unit of large size. They lie in a general northwest-southeast alignment and the intervening areas have not been condemned by dry holes. THE leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which; according to Pelabon,1 is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgström3 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343°, if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430° if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S3 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)2.Sb203 melts at 517°C.5 4. The volatility of Sb2S3 and Sb203, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures.

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders % in. long. LAVES and Wallbaum' have described TiRu and TiOs as having the same structure as TiFe; they had previously described the latter compound as having the CsCl structure. On the other hand, a careful investigation of the structure of TiFe by Duwez and Taylor- ailed to reveal the ordered CsCl structure, finding instead a random arrangement of titanium and iron atoms on the points of a body-centered-cubic space lattice. Consequently, it is not clear whether Laves and Wallbaum proposed the ordered or the disordered structure for TiRu and TiOs. In order to settle this question as to the structural type and to obtain values of the lattice para- meters (thereby completely determining the structures), the present investigation was undertaken. Samples having the compositions TiRu and TiOs were weighed out accurately from iodide titanium supplied by the New Jersey Zinc Co., ruthenium powder from Goldsmith Brothers Smelting & Refining Co., and osmium powder from Wildberg Brothers Smelting & Refining Co. No analysis was made of any of these metals. According to the respective analyses of the suppliers, total impurities amount to less than 0.03 pct in the titanium and to less than 0.5 pct in the osmium. The purity of the ruthenium is not known. The alloys were prepared by arc melting in a furnace of the type described by Schramm, Gordon, and Kaufmann.9 pecimens for X-ray diffraction were obtained by crushing the ingots and passing the resulting powders through a 200 mesh screen. Processes for the removal of phosphorus from iron or steel are steadily assuming greater importance in view of the abundance of high-phosphorus iron-ore and the diminishing supply of pure ore. In the present methods of removing phosphorus by the basic open-hearth or basic Bessemer process, or even by electric processes, complete control over the metallurgical conditions is either impossible or has not yet been realized. The removal of phosphorus has so long been accomplished along certain well-defined lines, that when the electric furnace made its appearance metallurgists adhered to the same old reactions used in the older processes and failed to appreciate and take advantage of the new forces at their disposal. One object of the present paper is to set forth more clearly the metallurgical reactions by which phosphorus can be removed from iron, and to show the necessity of controlling the conditions, and particularly the temperature, by means other than combustion in the furnace-chamber. Invariably, the commercial removal of phosphorus has been accomplished by oxidation. The reactions involved in oxidation of phosphorus in general consist, first, of the formation of P2O5 and second, the combination of this oxide with lime, forming calcium phosphate, which latter is held in a slag high in iron oxide. In the present-used processes, the phosphorus is never removed without the assistance or presence of considerable quantities of iron oxide. A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass.
