ACCURATE ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fine¬ness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by mis-use, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to he actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

CRUSHING of Climax mine-run ore is carried out in two plants: No. 1 plant (flowsheet in Fig. 1) has a capacity of approximately 5000 tons per day. It is used as a stand-by except when maximum production is required. No. 2 plant (Fig. 2) has a top capacity of approximately 17,000 tons per day. The No. 2 crusher is more efficient to operate on reduced tonnages regardless of the wide variation in peak capacities. The system of crushing is similar in both plants: Mine ore, of a size which can be drawn through 48 by 96-in. slusher openings underground, is dumped into the crusher bins from ten-ton mine cars and fed into 48 by 60-in. Buchanan jaw crushers by means of chutes and Ross chain feeders. The jaw crushers are set to discharge at approximately 9-in. size. Jaw crusher discharge is conveyed to 7-ft. Book Review MANAGEMENT AND MEN. By Meyer Bloomfield, Boston. The Century Co., New York, 1919, pp. 584, H.X. 5 1/2. $3.50. This hook is an exposition of English efforts to solve the problem of labor unrest in England. The first six chapters are reprinted from articles published in the Satur-day Evening Post, for whom the author went to England to study the problem at first hand. These articles deal with housing, increased production, eliminating the internal friction in the industrial machine and a chapter each devoted to the view-point of employer and employee. These chapters are written in the easily readable magazine style and give a complete general survey of the particular solution being tried. Perhaps their greatest., certainly not their least, worth lies in the fact that they form a vehicle for unusually voluminous appendices containing in full the famous Whitley Reports which are the basis of the new movement, together with various reports, which, except for this publication, would be largely inaccessible to those inter-ested in this country. The Whitley scheme considers each industry a unit and proposes to establish therein a Joint Standing Industrial Council composed of representatives of employers and employees to consider appropriate matters affecting the industry at large. There is to be a District Council for each industry which will, as its name implies, deal with the clatters pertaining to that interest in. the particular district. The third and last body in this scheme of Industrial Parliament is the Works Committee, which is com-posed of representatives of the management and of the workers employed in particu-lar plants or mines to act in close cooperation With the district quid national machinery. The Whitley or similar schemes have been tried in many communities in England and the book contains interesting comments on the result obtained, it being notable that most of the objections conic from plants which have not tried the scheme. As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. Following the suggestion of Engineering Council and at the direction of, the President, representatives from each of the Federal Government bureaus interested in map-making were called into a conference for the purpose of coordinating all of the Government's map-making activities. This conference has now reported back to the President the results of its findings, which indicate that Engineering Council's recommendation in this matter was well founded. While the conference report states that its members were of the opinion that little duplication of effort existed, it recommends the formation of a permanent Board of Surveys and Maps. An extended review of the map-making activities, which is given as an appendix to the report, indicates that this recommendation is a logical step. The conference recommendations concerning this Board of Surveys and Maps are as follows: (1) the Board is to he com-posed of representatives of mapping bureaus to be assisted by outside engineering organizations, which have been named above; (2) the estab-lishment of an information office in one of the Government bureaus, preferably the Geological Survey, which is to be under the supervision of the Board and is to be a mapping information clearing house for the Government and outside engineering organizations; (3) copyright laws are to be so changed that copies of all. maps made in the United States and with Governmental authority, will go to the central information office; (4) the Government departments are to receive orders to cooperate, with the Board; (5) future topographic maps of all kinds are to conform with specifications for the standard topographic map; (6) the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey to have supervision of final adjustment of all important control data under specifications approved by Board of Surveys and Maps; (7) surveys in the form of maps and publications are to be issued as soon as possible after field work has been completed; (8) program of the Interdepartmental Committee on Aerial Surveying was approved. Outside technical and scientific organizations that are called in for consultation are to operate in an advisory capacity only, responsibility for action on Governmental work is. to rest solely with the Governmental agencies.

Martensitic transformations were observed by optical metallography and electrical-resistivity measurements during cooling at cryogenic temperatures of the bcc pr-phase Au-Zn alloys. The com-position dependence of the MS, MF, AS , and AF temperatures have been determined. It is concluded that the martensitic platelets which grow mainly in the lengthwise direction and which are associated with a very small temperature hysteresis are "thermoelastic" martensite. In some cases the observed structure seems to have no definite crys-tallographic habit or consists of a mixture of- plates and broad transformed areas. THE majority of the bcc /3-phase alloys in systems of copper, silver, and gold with zinc and cadmium are unstable at low temperatures and undergo a transformation upon further cooling into another structure. A large number of such transformations are martensitic. The composition dependence of the Ms temperatures has been determined and reported for CU-~n,' Ag-Cd,' and AU-C~~ alloys. The 50 at. pct ordered Au-Zn p' alloy has been reported by Jan and pearson4 to transform martensitically at 58°K in connection with their study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect The p' phase in the Au-Zn system has the ordered CsC1-type structure. The phase field is shown in Fig. 1: it has the typical V shape which is characteristic of all copper-, silver-, and gold-based binary /3-phase alloys. There appears to be no a priori reason why the transformation should be limited to the equiatomic composition and the availability of a cryogenic stage for optical metallography5 has permitted studies down to the liquid-helium temperature of a series of alloys in this system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Predetermined weights of 99.999 pct pure gold and zinc were melted and cast under a partial atmosphere of helium in sealed quartz capsules. Thorough mixing of the molten metals was achieved by vigorous shaking, followed by a rapid quench into a brine solution. All ingots were homogenized at 640°C for 4 days. VERMICULITE is a name used to describe micaceous material that exfoliates when heated. It is hydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate. The chemical composition, color, physical appearance, and degree of exfoliation vary. COMPOSITION, PROPERTIES, AND ORIGIN Vermiculite has the characteristic micaceous structure of basal cleavage and readily splits into thin laminae, which are soft, pliable, and inelastic. The monoclinic crystal faces are often marked by triangular lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness is 1.5; specific gravity, 2.2-2.7; luster pearly to greasy; colors, amber, bronze, reddish brown, dark green, and black. Feel is soapy, particularly when wet. When heated it exfoliates by expanding at right angles to the cleavage into long wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is from the Latin veamiculari, to breed worms). This important characteristic of expansion is believed to be a mechanical separation of the layers when the contained water is converted into steam. Warping of the unit layers may also contribute to the expansion. The increase in bulk volume of commercially prepared material is 8 to 12 times but individual flakes may increase in size more than this. Pure vermiculite is a distinct mineral and has the structural formula (OH), (Mg,Fe)3 (Si,Al,Fe)4 010.4H20. It rarely occurs in this pure form, but generally as a mixed mineral of varying structure. One explanation is that the mixed material is composed of unit layers of inter-stratified pure vermiculite and biotite. The essential difference between the two is that unit cell structure of vermiculite contains a layer of water molecules whereas the biotite cell contains potassium instead of the water. The water content of the mixed vermiculite is less than that of pure vermiculite but more than that of biotite. Pure biotite does not expand when heated. If the proportion of biotite layers in a vermiculite is too high it will adversely affect the degree of exfoliation. Within a given deposit, the great mass of material may approach a definite com-position with local areas of greater biotite content. It is not uncommon to find also small pockets of pure biotite but these are generally segre-

I. INTRODUCTION. LIME-ROASTING is a term proposed by Ingalls 1 for the operation of forcing air under pressure through a mixture of galena and lime at the kindling-temperature with the object of oxidizing lead and sulphur and of fritting or fusing the charge. If, finely-divided galena were treated in this manner without the addition of lime, the heat set free by the oxidation of part of the lead and the sulphur would be sufficiently great to fuse undecomposed sulphide, and thus stop desulphurization. Besides the chemical action that the addition of lime, limestone or gypsum to the charge may have, the admixture has the physical effect that it keeps the particles of galena separated from one another and accessible to the oxidizing effect of the air. At present, three methods of lime-roasting are carried out on a working-scale, the Huntington-Heberlein, the Carmichael-Bradford and the Savelsberg2 processes. In the last, which interests us here, an 8-ton charge is made up of galena, limestone and perhaps some siliceous or ferruginous flux; the whole is crushed to pass a screen with 3-mm. holes and moistened with 5 per cent of water. It is fed gradually into a bowl-shaped converter, 6.56 ft. in diameter, supported by trunnions attached to a truck. On the .bottom the converter has a grate with blast-inlet beneath. ALTHOUGH by far the largest A consumer of platinum metals in the world, the United States until recently has been in- significant as a producer. Writing in the "Minerals Yearbook" for 1939, H. W. Davis states that 1938 probably marked the beginning of an- other period of transition in the world production of the platinum metals. In that year, he says, their production in the United States jumped to 49,380 oz., or fourth in the rank of world output. In the ten-year period 1925 to 1934 United States output ,averaged only 8300 oz. Practically all of this sudden in- crease in production is attributable to the introduction of mechanized equipment at the placer deposits in the Goodnews Bay district of Alaska. This district adjoins the Bering Sea and Kuskokwim Bay (accented on the first syllable), and is approximately 120 miles south of the mouth of the Kuskokwim River. The nearest village and post office is Platinum, which lies about eleven miles north- east of the Goodnews Bay Mining Company's camp. A good gravel road connects the mine camp and the village.

EVERY reader of this paper is well aware of the fact that the prolonged inhalation of large amounts of free silica dust results in fibrosis of the lungs, and that other inorganic dusts, except those of asbestos and the mineral poisons, are thought to be relatively harmless. But probably few have had opportunity to visualize the effects of silica, asbestos and other minerals upon living tissues. The ideal demonstration would be based upon sections of lungs from human beings that had inhaled com-parable concentrations of different dusts for a unit period of time. Such material is generally difficult to obtain and in some instances is of ques-tionable value because the subject has been exposed to more than one kind of dust. A demonstration could be prepared from the lungs of animals. However, so many months or even years are required to com-plete the exposure to each kind of dust that enough material has not been accumulated. For a general survey of the action of different types of dust, I am therefore compelled to use the tissues of animals that have been injected with suspensions of dust particles. The injection method offers certain advantages. The quantity, the particle size and the state of dispersion can be controlled with sufficient accuracy so that the tissue responses to different minerals can be accu-rately compared. The method insures contact between the tissues and the mineral particles; protective mechanisms, which may prevent the inhalation of certain types of foreign body, never come into play. If the pathway of injection be one that minimizes nonspecific injury, the tissue responses may simulate those produced by inhalation but they develop somewhat more rapidly. It should always be remembered that injection methods merely demonstrate the capacity of various kinds of minerals to provoke reaction in the tissues; whether the same substances are inhaled from atmospheric suspension and accumulate in the lungs in dangerous quantities can be demonstrated only by inhalation.

This stove has been designed to meet the requirements of a fur nave that must be operated with either a reducing or a neutral flame ; and more particularly to make feasible the operating of re duction-furnaces with the cheaper grades of gas-fuel, which has heretofore been impracticable. In general, cheap gas-fuels result from incomplete combustion, and, being suited for further combustion, answer very well for heat ing purposes; and high temperatures may be attained with them, when they are used in conjunction with regenerative stoves. But, in operating a reduction-furnace, a high temperature is not the only requirement. It is also necessary that the fuel shall not be cansumed beyond a certain degree, in order to insure a re ducing flame for the reduction-process ; consequently, it becomes necessary to dispense with combustion as much as possible previous to the use of the fuel-gases in the reduction-furnace. Moreover, these gases must be preheated to a high degree, in order that a sufficient temperature may be maintained in the furnace; and, since this preheating cannot be accomplished by a previous, partial combustion of the gases themselves, it follows that the stoves for pre heating these gases should be heated to as high degree as it is pos sible to attain with an inferior fuel. This result can best be accom plished by complete combustion of the heating gases, and is further facilitated by preheating all of the air and gas used for this com plete combustion. It is more particularly desirable to preheat the air, since the combustible gases used may generally be obtained directly from the furnace, or gas-producer. The reducing gases, escaping from a gas-fuel reduction-furnace, are capable of considerable further dilution with air to secure com plete combustion, and consequently may be utilized for heating the stove to a high temperature, provided the air be sufficiently preheated.

THE growth of domestic requirements for motor fuel has been phe-nomenal, rising year after year in a fashion almost unique among com-modities, resisting depressions and forging rapidly ahead in times of prosperity. Consumption advanced from 226 millions of barrels in 1925 to 522 millions of barrels in 1938; or 130 per cent. The economic influ-ences generating and sustaining this demand are of vital concern to the petroleum industry. The general factors affecting utilization of motor fuel are well known but it is the purpose of this paper to employ the recently developed technique of economic dynamics to describe them mathematically. Such problems in economic analysis are complicated by the freedom of all the variables to fluctuate, their mutual interdependence, changing incidence upon one another, and the nonquantitative character of some of them. Economic quantities and relationships, unlike those of the physical world, are continuously changing and this dynamic characteristic is both a distinguishing and confusing feature in economic research. The com-plexities of the problems require application of the analytical devices of mathematical statistics to uncover the probable relationships between factors. The procedure employed is to formulate a logical relationship linking the dependent to the independent variables, and then simul-taneously, rather than sequentially, determine their separate effects by multiple correlation. This transformation of common knowledge to quantitative terms makes it possible to measure the probable effects of changing conditions upon requirements, assisting in the sound interpreta-tion of economic policies. The utility of the results of such dynamic analysis is in sharp contrast to the sterility of the trends and other simple empiricisms of descriptive statistics. It is not intended in this study to throw light on the reasons why any motor fuel at all is consumed; but to discover relationships explaining why more was consumed at one time than at another. DOES mining pay? Inasmuch as the whining of minerals from Nature is one of the world's principal sources of new wealth, this question is of general economic interest but it is obviously of even more vital concern to investors and those engaged in mining. In a previous article on "Wage Costs in the Mineral Industries,' published in the November issue, I attempted to show that wages paid workers on the job accounted for, roughly, 50 per cent of the mine dollar. Salaries normally range over 5 per cent - lower for large metal mines but higher in stone quarries and minor nonmetallic min. in, industries. Purchases of supplies, materials. fuel, and power generally aggregate within the range of 15 to 25 per cent of total receipts, with the average well under 20 per cent. IT not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual. civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bis-bee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diarn, churn drillhole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location. The noise of the drilling tools was reasonably clear, but the direction of sound was uncertain. Preliminary tests with available equipment were not successful in locating the bottom of the hole. Because of the mineralized character of the area and the fact there was some casing in the hole, any magnetic method of well surveying would give results of doubtful value. Sperry-Sun gyroscopic well-surveying instruments were finally used to locate the bottom of the hole. These instruments consist of a gyroscope to determine azimuth and either a pendulum or bubble inclino-meter. A multiple shot camera photographs both instruments on a single film and superimposes the photograph of a watch. Coordination of depth with time at the surface makes it possible to select the corresponding picture for any depth. After making several runs of the empty instrument housing from the top of the hole to the bottom to make sure there were no obstructions in the hole, three surveys on wire line were completed during the afternoon. The three surveys, in which readings were taken at different points in the hole on each survey, were computed and gave the following locations of the bottom of the hole in relation to the surface collar: survey No. 1—24.92 N, 30.30 W; survey No. 2—24.24 N, 31.11 W; survey No. 3—26.54 N, 27.72 W. Then the data from the three surveys were combined into a single set of calculations which gave a location for the bottom of the hole: combined surveys—24.27 N, 30.16 W. (Fig. 1.) Immediately upon the determination of the coordinates at the bottom of the hole, a drift on the 1300 ft level was started toward the indicated loca- tion some 38 ft northwest of the coordinates of the surface location, The bottom of the hole was located within the drift round in which it was expected, and the transit survey run to the actual location of the hole indicated N 27.18, W 29.71. This shows a discrepancy between the well survey and the transit survey of 0.45 ft in the westerly direction and 2.91 ft in the northerly direction. All surveys, both gyroscopic and transit, fell well within the width of an ordinary drift. While this is satisfactory for almost any and all mining requirements, a theoretical examination was made as to reasons for the discrepancy. A study of the course of the hole indicates that considerable right turn or spiral existed, and in all probability the surveying instrument was pulled out of alignment while traversing the turn by approximately 0.05 ft at the top and another 0.05 ft in the opposite direction at the bottom of the instrument. If such an allowance were to be made, the survey calculations would almost exactly correspond with those determined by transit. This sort of discrepancy would be minimized by the use of stabilizing guides. It is unfortunate that physical laws probably effectively prevent the use of gyroscopic instruments in EX and AX diamond drill holes. The directive power of a gyroscope falls off inversely at some rate between the third power and the sixth power of the diameter. Present instruments can be run in casing 53/4 in. ID or over and might be adapted to somewhat smaller diameters, but the difficulty of reducing these diameters to 11/4 in. or 2 in. is almost insurmountable at the present time. The directive power of a gyroscope falls off inversely at some rate between the third power and the sixth power of the diameter. Present instruments can be run in casing 53/4 in. ID or over and might be adapted to somewhat smaller diameters, but the difficulty of reducing these diameters to 11/4 in. or 2 in. is almost insurmountable at the present time. Possible interactions of the perfect dislocations of six slip systems or the c dislocation with the (10i2f (ioii), {ioIi}(ioiZ), {1122}(1123), and {1121}(ii26) type twins in hcp metals have been analyzed from the crystallographic and the energetic points of view. Twenty-six distinct types of possible interactions were identified, and those selected based on crystallographic constraints were examined for their energetic feasibilities by use of the anisotropic energy factors. No long-range elastic interaction exists for a dislocation when its Burgers vector is parallel to the twin interface. Under a suitable applied stress, a screw dislocation can cross slip at the twin interface. For basal mixed dislocations in cadmium and zinc, the interaction with {1012} twins is found to be attractive, indicating that incorporation of these dislocations into the twins is energetically feasible and that twin growth will result. On the other hand, the interaction between both basal and Prism mixed dislocations and the {1012} and (1121) twins is found to be repulsive in Mg, Co, Re, Zr, Ti, Hf, and Be. This indicates that under an applied stress a local stress concentration will develop due to a dislocation pileup at the interface, which may result in a site for either the nucleation of other twins or the formation of a crack, depending on the cleavage strength. WHEN a metal undergoes plastic deformation, a certain configuration of slip dislocations will result in a state of dislocation pileup against an obstacle. The stress concentration thus developed may enhance the process of twin nucleation and also twin growth. Furthermore, once formed and dispersed in the crystal, twins can act as effective barriers against slip dislocations. The degree of such mutual influence or interrelation between slip and twinning is generally known to be pronounced in the case of hcp, metals. It is also known that deformation by twinning occurs more commonly in hexagonal metals than in cubic metals. In fact, under suitable stress states, all hexagonal metals exhibit {1012) <1011> type twinning.&apos; In addition to this common type, deformation by (1151) <1126> type twinning occurs in zirconium, titanium, and rhenium, which show remarkable ductility.&apos; The importance of twinning during general deformation to the ductility of hcp polycrystals has been briefly discussed in recent review works.2&apos;3 The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interaction between slip dislocations and twins in the hcp structure and to discuss the nucleation and growth processes of twinning and the role of twinning in the <"°" noil) o, 1/3[112O] (OOO2) 1/3[1123] Fig. l—-Slip systems in hcp structure. ductility of hexagonal metals. The problem will be discussed from the geometric and the energetic points of view in a manner similar to that of the previous work on zinc.4 Since hcp crystals deform by several slip and twin systems, numerous interactions result as possibilities. The Burgers vectors of six slip systems and the c dislocation shown in Fig. 1 and the four twin systems listed in Table I are considered here. A complete tabulation of the possible interactions is followed by discussion of those that are more likely to occur on the basis of crystallographic constraints and energetic considerations. 1) CRYSTALLOGRAPHY OF TWINNING The crystallographic elements, K1, K2, n1, and n2, for the four compound twin systems are now well established.= A unit cell with the base vectors n1, and n2 is shown in Fig. 2 for each twin system. The unit cell before twinning is shown in solid line, and the corresponding unit cell after twinning is shown in dashed line. Also shown in Fig. 2 are the following crystallographic parameters: S is the plane of shear, d the interspacing of the twin habit planes K1,Ø Iis the acute angle between n1, and n 2, e is a numerical factor, and q is the number of K, lattice planes intersected by 17&apos;. These parameters can be expressed in terms of the axial ratio, y = c/a, as listed in Table 11. The macroscopic shear strain of twinning, s, and the magnitude of a "unit twin dis-l~cation,"4 bt, are also expressed in terms of y and given in Table 11. In Table 11, K1 and q1 are given in both Miller-Bravais and Miller indices. In double lattice structures, shuffling of atoms in addition to a homogeneous shear of the lattice is generally required if the original crystal structure is to be restored after twinning. INTRODUCTION The idea of water management and control at the Church Rock Mill operations began to take shape in February 1979. At that time, we were already investigating the feasibility of decreasing the fresh water requirements so that the solids would become the limiting factor in tailings impoundment utilization. The area for solution evaporation could be kept at a fraction of the normal requirements under the standard process of full water usage. The Church Rock Mill is an acid leach circuit followed by solids/liquid separation with thickeners in counter current decantation, and solvent extraction. Following the normal design of acid leach circuits, reuse of tailings solution was not incorporated in the original mill process design. INITIAL WATER CONTROL INVESTIGATIONS The investigations to decrease the fresh water requirements centered around modifying the grinding circuit from the present semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to open circuit grinding with a rod mill. The open circuit grinding with the SAG mill and rod mill in series had the potential of decreasing the water requirements for grinding and leach dilution by approximately 50% or 1.4 m3/min (300 gpm). The grinding pulp density would be maintained at 70 to 72% solids, and the leach dilution to 50% solids would be accomplished with acid tailings liquor recycle. In such a grinding circuit arrangement, the SAG mill would provide the primary or coarse grind, and the rod mill would be used for the fine grind. By the SAG mill and rod mill series grinding method of water control and other secondary water controls in various places downstream from the grinding circuit, the required necessary evaporation area was estimated at 120 acres of liquid surface. A second method of water control at grinding was investigated. A two-stage cyclone classification circuit appeared to have a good potential of achieving the same water reduction at a much lower capital and operating cost. However, in retrospect, this would not have been a viable method since a high slime recycle load would have been established hindering classification. The use of reagents to neutralize the acid tailings solution was not considered seriously at that time, since it would have materially increased operating costs, although it would have also allowed more tailings solution recycle and consequently, less fresh water usage. However, with the tailings solution deposition area available at that time, it was not then necessary to incur the high cost of neutralization. The control expected by the series grinding of semiautogenous and rod mills would have been sufficient to maintain a water consumption/evaporation equilibrium well in line with the available land area. IMPLEMENTATION OF NEUTRALIZATION OPERATIONS During the summer of 1979, the UNC Church Rock Mill experienced a tailings dam breach which resulted in a prolonged mill shutdown. Upon resumption of operations at the end of October 1979, tailings deposition was restricted to a small portion of the tailings impoundment area. Figure 1 shows the general tailings area and the limits of the present deposition area in the central part including the borrow pits. These borrow pits had been excavated to provide materials for tailings dam construction. Immediately after resumption of operations, it became evident that it would be necessary to control the quantity of liquid to be evaporated because of the small confined area available for tailings solution deposition and to maximize the deposition time in the tailings area. The water control required had to be exercised on a large scale, and to be in operation as quickly as possible. An obvious solution was to reuse the tailings liquor in mill process. Immediate steps were taken to install the necessary equipment for tailings neutralization on an interim basis. Anhydrous ammonia was selected as the primary neutralization reagent since it was the quickest system that could be placed in operation. Previous laboratory tests indicated fair results with ammonia neutralization. Such a system required a minimum of installed equipment and handling. INITIAL NEUTRALIZATION OPERATIONS Actual neutralization operations began on November 26, 1979. The raffinate solution which normally would have been discarded was pumped to a 3.7 m (12ft) diam by 4.3 m (14ft) tank for reagent contact, see Figure 2. At this tank, anhydrous ammonia was added directly from the tanker trailers and controlled at pH 7.0 nominally. Agitation was provided by air sparging. The neutralized product formed a highly viscous slurry in the grinding circuit which resulted in pumping and cyclone classification problems.

A perspective is presented of the steel plant sulphur distribution and elimination problem from coal to liquid steel ready for teeming, giving distributions of sulphur over a range of coke sulphur content, and some methods of sulphur control, in the blast furnace, external desulphuriza-tion between blast furnace and open hearth, distribution between fuel, slag, and metal, and methods and limitations of control of sulphur in the open hearth furnace. AS a part of the 1951 AIME symposium on sulphur in steelmaking, it was thought that a discussion of the distribution of sulphur throughout the whole series of operations, from coal and ore to finished steel ingots, might have some value in giving a perspective on the whole problem. The following discussion is an attempt to present such an overall picture. The order is that of the actual plant operations, beginning with a very brief consideration of the coking process. Sulphur in Coal and Coke Since by far the largest source of sulphur entering the steelmaking cycle is in the coal used to make coke for the blast furnace, it would seem reasonable to eliminate some of it, either from the coal, or the coke, or during the coking process. This has appeared impracticable up to the present, at least, for two main reasons: the low activity of the organic sulphur in either coal or coke, and because of price limitations involved in treating a low cost material such as coke. A variable portion, usually M or less, of the sulphur is present in coal in the form of pyrites or similar compounds, and a large part of this sulphur may be removed in the coal washery. Most of the sulphur, however, is normally present as "organic" sulphur, intimately associated with the coal structure. Its distribution prevents any separation by mechanical means. Its low activity makes improbable &apos; any rapid chemical removal, although hydrogen will remove sulphur from both coal and coke. Thus, prolonged recirculation of coke oven gas in the coking process would tend to leave a smaller percentage of the total sulphur in the coke residue. Table I shows a typical distribution of sulphur from coal into products in the coking process. As the sulphur in the coal increases, the sulphur in the coke tends to increase in about the same proportion. Sulphur in the Blast Furnace The best picture of the situation in the blast furnace is provided by a sulphur balance of raw materials entering, and of products leaving, the furnace. The difficulties in accurate weighing and sampling of the variable solid materials entering this process, and the number of hours required for the raw materials to descend through the furnace under variable operating conditions, make it difficult to obtain an accurate balance. However, balances made over periods of weeks or months tend to average out some of these uncertainties. Table I1 presents three typical sulphur balances similar to a number that the writers have calculated. In most of these the slag volume calculated from the sulphur balance is, in some instances more, and in other instances less, than the value corresponding to the best input and output balances of the other slag constituents (lime, silica, alumina, etc.). Probably the greatest source of error in these calculations is the sulphur content of the slag. Despite some possible inaccuracies the balances of Table II show rather definitely the following points: 1—That 87 to 95 pct of the total sulphur input is in the coke and 95 to 97 pct of the total sulphur output is in the slag. Also, that if any sulphur leaves the furnace with the gas it is relatively small, amounting to a possible 1 pct or less. 2—At the lower sulphur coke level of 0.86 pct the total amount of sulphur charged is 15 Ib of sulphur per ton iron increasing to 26 lb per ton at the higher sulphur, intimately associated with the coal struc-rare burdens containing sulphur-rich ores will the total sulphur burden fail to be nearly proportional to the content in the coke used. 3—The 7 to 9 pct of the total sulphur input from the limestone of furnaces B and C is due to the relatively high sulphur content of the stone, 0.226 and 0.265 pct, respectively. In the case of furnace A, the sulphur content of the limestone was only 0.06 pct which resulted in only 3 pct of the total sulphur input coming from this source. DUE to its location in the Atacama Desert, one of the most barren of the earth&apos;s surfaces, Chuquicamata&apos;s water supply presents unusual problems. Yearly rain-fall averages less than one tenth of an inch at the plant. However, there are summer showers above 12,000 ft in the Cordillera to the east, the resulting run-off flowing through old river valleys buried beneath more recent volcanic formations, to be impounded within sediment-filled basins. This water emerges at springs where the outlets of these basins are blocked by lava flows, and here are formed the small streams which feed the only important river of the region, the Rio Loa. Chuquicamata&apos;s water is obtained from these springs and rivulets. [ ] The map above indicates four pipe lines from which potable and industrial water are supplied. Potable water, amounting to 4500 metric tons per day, is conveyed in the Toconce pipe line from springs 59 miles due east of Chuquicamata. This water is used not only for drinking, but also for boilers and other needs requiring high quality. For industrial water at the oxide plant, there are two 12-in. pipe lines from the Rio San Pedro, carrying a total of 17,000 metric tons per day of slightly brackish water. This water is at present used mainly for leaching and for hygienic purposes. Water Source Found For the present and future needs of the sulphide plant, it was calculated that at least 32,000 metric tons per day of make-up water would be required. For this purpose, a pipe line of 44 miles length was constructed to bring in the entire flow of the Arroyo Salado, one of the eastern tributaries of the Loa. The salt content of this water is so high (over 5000 parts per million of solubles, mostly chlorides) that it is highly detrimental to farming, and the Chilean Government had been studying projects to separate these waters from others of the Loa system in order to improve agricultural conditions in the fertile valley of Calama. So it happened that the Government was willing to award rights to the Arroyo Salado waters under agreement whereby the Mining Company removes waters from the Rio Loa system above Calama for all time. The outlet of these waters, after serving their purpose at the new concentrator and leaving the plant in tailing, is the Salar de Talabre, an old salt lake which presents fully ten square miles of surface to serve as an evaporating pan, the outlets having now been blocked by dams. Here the dry climate of Chuquicamata is a favourable factor, evaporation averaging slightly above 1/4 in. per day. The Toconce and San Pedro pipe lines have been functioning from 26 to 34 years, and through the use of special cleaning tools which were developed at the plant, as well as deaeration of the more active Toconce water, these pipes are now maintained at capacities which do not diminish as years go on. Constructing the Dam The Arroyo Salado pipe line design and construction involved certain special and interesting features, and inasmuch as this line and its intake works are solely for the needs of the new sulphide plant, more detailed description is given. The waters are impounded at a gravity dam constructed of concrete to a height of 100 ft above the river bed, keyed into the precipitous Dacite walls of the narrow canyon (barely 6-ft wide at the bottom, only 25-ft width at 50 ft above). A small secondary dam was built 100 ft down stream from the main dam, providing a pool of 15-ft depth to protect the main structure from flood flows over the spill-way during the rainy season. A system of four 36-in. syphons was designed for discharging these flood waters from the lower depths of the lake, in order to avoid eventual sedimentation behind the dam. The lake has a length of 3300 ft, and its water level is controlled by an adjustable spillway permitting draw-down of eighty inches, amounting to 41,000 metric tons of available capacity. This regulation is necessary because of wide fluctuations in stream flow between day and night due to freezing of feeders. During the construction of the dam the entire river flow was handled within a 36-in. pipe line some 2000 ft in length. As the excavations proceeded

The oxygen pressure in equilibrium with silver and Ag2O-B2O3 melts has been measured between 800&apos; and 900°C, to obtain the thermodynamic properties of the liquid. The compound Ag20. 4B20:1 appears to exist in the liquid, which shows marked heat content and entropy effects. A KNOWLEDGE of the thermodynamic properties of binary liquid silicates, borates, and phosphates would be of considerable assistance in the interpretation of the behavior of multi-component metallurgical slags. However, the literature contains comparatively few studies of the thermodynamics of binary slags. The system Ag20-B,O, attracted our attention as it was known to give a single liquid phase,&apos;,&apos; in which high contents of silver could be obtained (up to 61 pct Ag according to Foex2). Further, it would be expected that the partial pressure of oxygen over melts in equilibrium with metallic silver could be used to determine the activity of Ag2O in the Ag,O-B,O, system. In many respects, it may be expected that the reaction of a basic oxide with boric oxide would be analogous to its reaction with silica. Liquid immiscibility frequently occurs in both borate and silicate systems. With B2O3 and SiO reaction with a basic oxide presumably involves a breakdown of the three-dimensional network of the acid oxide by reaction with oxygen atoms common to more than one silicon or boron atom. Ag2O-B2O3 was therefore investigated as a model of a slag system in the hope that its thermodynamic properties would assist in understanding those of other systems. Several methods for determining the activity of a component in a slag have been described in the literature. Chang and Derge" used high temperature electromotive force measurements to obtain the activity of SiO2 in CaO-SiO2 and Ca0-Al203-Si02 slags, but the cell reaction in their work is not clear. low has used rate of volatilization and vapor pressure measurements combined with phase diagrams to obtain activities in the systems KO-SiO,, Na,O-SiO, and Li,O-SiO," and PbO-SiO26 Taylor and Chipman7 extrapolated their results for the distribution of FeO between liquid iron and CaO (+Mg0)-FeO-SiOl slags to obtain the activity of FeO in the binary FeO-SiO2 system. In principle, one of the most direct methods for obtaining the activity of a metallic oxide in a phase is by comparison of the equilibrium oxygen pressure for the system metal-pure oxide with that of metal oxide-containing phase. Schenck and othersa have studied the stabilization of Ag2O on combination with other oxides (MO,) in the solid state by measurements of the oxygen pressure in systems of the type Ag-Ag,O-xM0,-MOy-0, (gas). Schuhmann and Ensio" have determined the activity of FeO in iron silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron, using CO/CO2 mixtures to establish known partial pressure of oxygen. Although the method gives the activity of FeO without ambiguity, the slag is not a binary system, and interpretation of the results in terms of the hypothetical binary system FeO-SiO, is not possible. If a metal is solid at temperatures at which the properties of the slag containing its oxide are to be studied, this method has the considerable experimental advantage that the metal can be used as the container for the slag, and contamination by contact with refractories is avoided. In this work, crucibles for Ag2-B,O, melts were made from silver, and the liquid brought to equilibrium with definite pressures of oxygen gas. The oxygen pressure PO, thus fixes the activity of Ag20 in the liquid silver borate. For the reaction at a given temperature. is substantially constant, is directly proportional to the square root of the equilibrium oxygen pressure. Varying the oxygen pressure changed the silver oxide content of the liquid and it was possible to obtain the activity of Ag2O over a range of composition. Experimental Procedure In principle, the method consisted of bringing melts in silver crucibles or boats to equilibrium at a fixed temperature under a definite pressure of oxygen and analyzing the glass after solidification.
