SOME eighty years have elapsed since the discovery of the Clifton magnetite deposit. For a few years about the time of the Civil War it was mined for iron ore. most of which was smelted on the property. Since risen the small exposures of ore in the old cut. test pits, and on the dumps have been examined by various prospectors. The M. A. Hanna Co. first became interested in the possibilities of the deposit when we discovered the large area of strong magnetic anomalies caused by the margnetite bed, indicating a size that would support a commercial operation. In 1940 we made a detailed magnetometer survey of the area. and the deposit was diamond-drilled. The main ore lied was found to be 1500 ft. long, to average 60 ft. thick, and to dip southeast at an angle of about 40 deg. The thickness of the bed is irregular in wavy folds both along the strike. and down the dip. Faults occur at both raids of the main deposit.

IN speaking of the mining and economic conditions prevailing at the present time on the Rand, it is not my intention to go into the details of the mining-practice, since this has been already well described both in the Transactions1 and elsewhere,2 but rather to take a more comprehensive view of the industry and its surroundings as a. whole, marking its general development and the lines of its future progress. In a. paper entitled Deep-Level Shafts on the Witwatersrand, with Remarks on a Method of Working the Greatest Number of Deep-Level Mines with the Fewest Possible Shafts,3 presented to this Institute in August, 1900, I drew attention to the great cost of sinking the very deep vertical shafts that were then being seriously proposed as necessary for the development of the deeper areas, pointing out the strong advisability of working this ground by means of inclines to be sunk from the existing shafts of from 3,000 to 4,000 ft. in vertical depth. In this paper it is stated (1:). 975): "In short, practice upon the Rand now tends towards fewer vertical shafts and more underground inclines, especially for the very deep mining about to be undertaken." In consequence, the 6,000-ft. vertical shafts, at one time so much discussed, have never been started, and they do not now seem likely ever to be. The necessity of placing all deep shafts further apart in order to make them control and exhaust larger areas was also dwelt upon. MANY things must be considered in coming to a decision as to what type of crushing and grinding equipment is to be used for preparing run-of-mine ore for concentration, amalgamation, flotation, or cyanidation. This paper is intended in no sense as a thorough discussion of these various factors, but rather contains a few observations based on a wide experience in the manufacture and application of milling machinery. One important governing factor is the tonnage to be dealt with. In large plants treating several thousands of tons in eight hours, a large jaw or gyratory crusher of substantial construction is standard equipment for reducing ore to 8 or 10 in. or finer. In open-pit work, using power shovels with 4- or 5-yd. dippers, a jaw crusher should have a receiving opening of 48 by 60 in., or 60 by 84 in., so that dynamite or hand sledging will not be required for breaking to a finer size before primary crushing. The coarsely broken ore is then conveyed by a belt to vibrating screens, the oversize from which is again conveyed by belts to secondary crushers having openings of 12 or 14 in., the product from which is conveyed to storage. From storage, the material goes to a finishing gyratory for reduction to 1/4 in. or finer.

SILICA is the main impurity in iron ore. It is intimately associated with the iron oxide, sometimes free but more often in the combined state, as a mineral silicate. Its separation and purification sometimes present difficult problems to the analyst. In the absence of any definite knowledge to the contrary, orthosilicic acid. H4SiO4, is supposed to be the only silicic acid made, all other forms, such as metasilicic acid, H2SiO3, representing different degrees of its dehydration. These acids are exceedingly weak but form the most stable compounds found in nature. They are known as the silicate minerals and are formed by the combination of the different metallic oxides

SOMEONE has called this war a war of gadgets. Someone else says it is an engineers' war. It is a war of production, transportation; a war in the sky; a war on wheels; a civilians' war. Let us not quarrel about nomenclature. Call it what you want. If four motored bombers and thirty-ton tanks are gadgets, then it is a gadget war. Engineers, scientists, shop laborers, air-raid wardens all have their highly important jobs to do. The fact remains that this war, like all others, is a soldiers' war. The basic strategy employed today is the same strategy that Philip of Macedon used on the Plains of Thessaly twenty centuries ago. His phalanx was a striking force armed with every known weapon. It was armored with breastplate and casque. It depended for success on superior man power and mobility, upon superior weapons and supply, and upon superior discipline. It executed commands faster than its enemies; it had more catapults and spears, more men in the back areas bringing up supplies. It was a new idea. It used what today we call the scissors movement to cut up its foes. It took sharp advantage of surprise. It introduced terror as a weapon-terror inspired by a vast, moving, shouting army with banners. It laid waste the cities by fire. The Greeks had a word for it but that word wasn't "blitzkrieg."

During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

(communication to the Secretary*): The Taviche mining-district is generally known as " Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jero-nimo Taviche. It is so called by Jose G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;' and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that " the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines." THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. 'The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.

A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

COAL preparation will be the main topic discussed at the first fall meeting of the Coal Division at Pittsburgh, Sept. 11, 12 and 13, though valuation, mergers, safety, stream pollution and other topics will not' be neglected. It is particularly appropriate that the great changes taking place in preparing coal for the market should be discussed at length where in the plants of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. and others the opportunity is afforded to see on a large scale just what is being accomplished. In wartime, the United States broke all records in coal production, but, as the late Franklin K. Lane pointed out, every fifth car shipped consisted of dirt. Obviously that constituted a big bur- den on industry and, in the remaking of the business which is now taking place both in the anthracite and bituminous fields, clean coal has properly enough be- come a watchward. Central coal-cleaning plants are being erected as a part answer to the puzzled inquiry of those familiar with metal mining as to why miners of coal have so long been content with what are relatively small units of production. Gradually big collieries comparable in tonnage output to the biggest copper mines are being built, and excellent examples are to be seen near Pittsburgh. THE discovery well of the world's -deepest oil producing structure, University 1-B of Group No. One Oil Corporation, in the Big Lake oil field, Reagan County, Texas, has had a remarkable record. The well is outstanding for the following reasons: (1) It is the world's pioneer well to produce. oil in commercial quantities from a structure 8500 ft. below the earth's . surface; (2) this well was the only. producer from the 8500-ft. pay for a period of 17 months and 24 days; (3) the flow of the discovery well has been free from-the customary changes at the casinghead, with the exception of putting on a back-pressure of 185 lb.; and, (4) the well's daily production of oil and gas increased rather steadily for 17 months and 18 days from an initial of 40 bbl. per day to a maximum of 2926 bbl. per day, and then six months later, after a period of decline and self-readjustment to subsurface changes caused by six more deep producers, the well set its real record for one day's production of oil at 2950 bbl

THE Fall Regional Meeting of the Institute, which has now for some years been held in cooperation with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, will be held this year at Joplin, Mo., in the heart of the great Tri-State district. This year the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producers Association is joining in the meeting. The Society of Economic Geologists will also take part though not offering any papers. The district in which the meeting is held includes adjacent parts of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Out in the heart of a fertile prairie farming country, it is one of the major mining districts of the world. It produces normally approximately one-third of the zinc ore mined in the United States which is equivalent to nearly one-half the zinc since the concentrate has always been notable for the height of its grade. Even in the depressed business year 1930, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics credits the district with 434,460 tons of concentrates equal to 217,230 tons of zinc out of 1,503,095 and 576,630 respectively for the country as a whole. This was equal to about one-seventh of the world's output of zinc, more than that of any foreign country. In addition about 75,000 to 100,000 tons of lead is annually furnished by the same mines. Elsewhere we present a general description of the district prepared for this meeting by J. C. Heilman, a Lehigh graduate, who has spent the past eleven years there and has had charge of explorations for many of the companies.

MOST spectacular of Nature's contributions to the making of the postwar world is the Paricutin volcano, in Mexico, which I described in the July issue of this magazine last year, a few months after it was born. Now, after more than a year of continuous eruption, it is still and perhaps will remain a comparatively small though no less interesting volcano. The cone on April 1 had an altitude of nearly 1200 ft. above the level of the small flat field from which it began to grow on Feb. 20, 1943. I DEEPLY appreciate the honor which has been conferred upon me by my election to the presidency of this Institute, as I feel that it is the highest honor a mining engineer can receive, and I also feel that I am especially fortunate in being called to take the presidency in the year following Mr. Hoover, as I may be enabled in that way to carry on the work which he has initiated. The constructive work that Mr. Hoover has inaugurated has been of inestimable benefit in bringing not only this Institute but the entire engineering profession into a place in the public esteem to a degree which it had never before occupied.. This work Mr. Hoover will now carry on in the broader field of the Federated American Engineering Societies, of which he is president. Through that organization the engineers of this country, in all branches of the profession, will be welded into one compact body reaching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making the united engineering profession a power for maintaining American . . ideals and standards throughout the land.,

Regenerative hot-blast stoves are now in general use in all parts of the world, and are so well understood and appreciated, that I need not take up your time with an account of their history and introduction into the United States. My object in writing this paper is to give you a short description of a stove that is now being very favorably received and adopted here (see drawing). The stove was first introduced into this country in 1887 by M'Clure & Shuler (now M'Clure & Amsler), who have the management of the patent right in the United States. The English design had to be modified to suit the exigencies of American blast-furnace practice, which, in many respects, widely differs from our English experience. In the first place, the fire-bricks used in America expand to an extent unknown in England, and it became necessary to make special provision for this by increasing the number of cross-walls, and by leaving a space at the top of the stove through which the lining could expand. The expansion laterally was, however, more difficult to provide for, as the combustion-chamber in the center, being the hottest part of the stove, must necessarily expand more than the outer walls, and therefore tend to squeeze up the flue-openings. On first introducing these stoves to American ironmasters, a feel ing seemed to prevail that a " four-pass " stove did not utilize the whole of its surface. They also had an idea that the " two-pass " stove let the burning gas go before all the duty had been extracted from it; so that it was found neceseary to design a stove of a special character to suit their wishes. Hence the "three-pass" chimney top stove now before your notice, the advantage claimed for which is that each stove is independent, requiring no underground chimney flue or stack, and can be erected at a very light cost. The working of these stoves has proved to be very successful wherever they have been introduced.

THE ENGINEERS have placed this great country of ours in a preeminent position with everything pertaining to manufacture, metallurgy, and the kindred arts. We are second to none in the world. We have a country which, another speaker has said, God has endowed with such riches in coal and natural resources as no other country in the world. But rich as these are, there is one thing greater; the sturdy character, energy, and integrity of its people, which will make these great resources an influence in the world's developments. Great as are these resources and the energy and integrity of our people, there is one problem of our .engineering, which I term human engineering, that is of far more importance than the creation of machines and methods, with which you have been so successful in the past. Of what value is the skillfully devised machinery, the complex process, unless manned and operated by people whose heart and soul are in sympathy with the work they are doing and who have before them the giving of a complete day's work for a day's pay?

Mr. Morton and I have changed the order of the questions. Instead of what is now first, we have put No. 3 first, progress on basic-roof construction, inasmuch as we feel that it is quite important. At this time, H. S. Robertson, of Harbison-Walker, is going to give you a short talk, with slides, on what has been done to date on this subject.
