ALTHOUGH Greater New York does not bear any resemblance to a great mining district, the mining operations that are being conducted in and about the city are both extensive and interesting in character. With regard to the extent, it may be mentioned that, at. present, there is more dynamite used in New York than in any mining district in the United States; that there are under construction about 38 miles of tunnel, and that 66 miles more are projected, most of which must be constructed in the near future ; that since 1902 at least 2,000,000 tons of earth has been removed in underground work, in addition to about 3,500,000 tons that has been removed in, open-cut in connection with tunnel-work, and many times this quantity that has been removed in excavating foundations for buildings not connected with tunnel-work; and that there are to-day probably more than 5,000 men engaged in mining-work in and about New York City. These undertakings include almost every operation connected with underground work, from exploration by means of trench and boring, to the sinking of large shafts and the driving of large tunnels through every kind of ground from hard rock to soft, semi-fluid silt and quicksand. It is proposed in this paper to give a general description of some of the methods and appliances used in the opening-up ,of a "mine" in a large city, and a brief description of some of the "mines" now being developed in New York, connecting as far as possible the methods described with the particular work for which they were designed, in order to give a general idea of the

Metallic bismuth was known in the Middle Ages and the name is supposed to come from the German Wismut. The origin of the German name is uncertain. References to bismuth are found in the writings of Valentine, Paracelsus, and Agricola between 1450 and 1550. Early specimens of bismuth were very impure and often were confused with antimony, tin, and zinc. About the middle of the eighteenth century, J. H. Pott, C. J. Geoffroy, and Torbern Bergman succeeded in producing fairly pure bismuth and showed it to be an elementary metal similar in many respects to lead.

AGAIN the records show an unprecedented enrollment of students in the mineral technology schools of the United States and Canada. In the current year, 1938-'39, 9619 students were resident in the 53 schools of the United States arid 1014 in the six schools of Canada. These data are from my fifth study of the mineral technology schools of the United States and Canada. the last previous study having been made for the year 1936-'37. The undertaking as previously was made under the auspices of the Mineral Industry Education Division of the A. I. M. E. The data or, the various schools were collected in the same way as for former studies.

For the second consecutive year, the production of crude petroleum in New York has fallen below the 5,000,000-bbl. Mark that had prevailed previously since 1937. In 1945, the output totaled 4,658,000 bbl., a decrease of slightly more, than one per cent from the 1944 production. This total represents 2 per cent of the stripper-well production of the United States, which in turn is I 3 per cent of the total annual yield of the nation's petroleum.

The value of the index n in power ktivs for the stress sensitivity of minimum creep rale at lead is derived front results drawn from lite literature and from previously unpublished nork on commercial (99.99 pel) and high-purity (99.999 pel) lead polycryslalline and hi crystal specimens. In tests al 0.5Tm (22 to 50'C) for slvesses below 250 psi, n fulls to mily for poly-cr,yslullirle specimens, single crystals, and bicrystals, and toy grain boundary sliding in bicrystals. Between 250 and 500 psi there is a tyansilion range and, for the polycrystalline specimens al least, u high-stress regime for 500 to 1500 psi where n is 5 or 6. These results are such that none of the suggested stress taws can he used to extrapolate to very loir stresses. Meclianisms for deformation in Ike grains and toy grain boundary sliding in the low-strcss regime are outlined. In particular, the mechanism for grain boundary sliding involves sliding controlled by diffusion from tensile to compressire Ledges. predictions based on this model give promising numerical agree-nicul with experiment. II is suggested that the mechanism for grain boundary sliding may he important in other circumstances, e.g., in creep of ceramic materials or superplaslicity, because it can operate with lille or no dislocation aclirity. WhEN the stress dependence of secondary creep rate is represented by a power law the values taken by the stress exponent n are found to vary between 1 and 7, see, c.g., Garofalo.' In Eq. 1 11 u is the applied stress and A a constant. The case for accepting values of v = 1 rests principally upon tests at high temperatures (>0.9Tm) and there have only been isolated tests at lower temperatures (rather than plots of creep rate against stress) for which the creep rates are such that some form of Nabarro-Herring creep with n = 1 is applicable. Hanson5 and Greenwood and cole6 plotted creep rate against stress for tests made in the vicinity of 0.5Tw, and found a "creep yield", so that below a certain low stress the creep rate was linearly related to stress: these observations appear to have been subsequently ignored. Various models have been proposed which agree with a large body of experimental results in which n equals -5 at high stresses (e.g., weertman7 and McLean8). Various alternatives to Eq. [1] have been proposed principally as a means of unifying creep data, but sometimes, it seems, in order to obviate the necessity for assuming a series of regimes of deformation associated with the various values of n; further refer- ence to these will be made in the section on stress laws. This paper calls attention to extensive results which show n = 1 for the creep of lead at room temperature (0.5 T,). RESULTS Fig. 1 is a composite diagram based on figures in the literature6,9,10 with additional results obtained by the present authors and their colleagues11,12 in the course of a number of investigations not directly concerned with stress sensitivity. Lead I is of commercial purity (99.99 pct Pb) and lead IT a specially refined material, hydrogen-purified to remove oxygen; it contains 99.999 pct Pb. Curve A is for lead I in polycrystalline form (grain diameter 0.02 to 0.05 cm) at room temperature (22' to 26°C). Curve B1 is for lead I, polycrystalline, tested at 50C. Curve B2 is for lead 11, polycrystalline (grain diameter 0.02 cm), tested at room temperature (22 O- Curves C to F relate to tests made of bicrystals of lead 11: all of the same nominal orientation ("Y" in Ref. 12). Curves C and V are for creep within the component crystals of the bi crystals at 22°C (AB and CD in Fig. 2). Curve E is for creep measured in a gage straddling the boundary, approximately 0.15 mm either side (BC in Fig. 2). Curve F shows rates of grain boundary sliding (as distinct from strain rates in the other curves), obtained by averaging the offsets of six marker lines on the bi-crystal boundaries. The principal feature of the results is that the stress sensitivity falls into two distinct regimes, according to whether the stress is below approximately 250 or above 500 psi (there is a transitional range between 250 and 500 psi). The new result is that below -250 psi two of the curves (A and BI) give a value of n 1, and the other curves also drop below n - 2 to -1.5 but do not extend to low enough stresses to show clear evidence of n 1. At very high stresses the curves tend to give values of n - 6, as previously determined in other investigations. Curve R2 for the high-purity lead in polycrystalline form at room tenlperature almost merges with B, and thus gives new significance to the values for stresses of 150 and 200 psi; previously'3 these points had seemed to fall away from the curve of slope -3, but they now can be seen as almost completing a transition to n = 1. It should be noted that there was originally considerable apparent scatter in the results for the high-purity lead. However, this was found to be associated with annealing conditions or variations in residual content of oxygen and curve B2 was constructed using the highest rate (i .e., the rate for the purest lead) determined for each stress during the course of various investigations over the years: altogether, some forty tests were used in constructing curve R2.

NEED for some simple method of determining tonnages in mill circuits has always been felt by operators and consultants alike. To meet this demand the following method was evolved and has been found accurate and practical after considerable testing on various mill flows. The essence of the method is to add a chemical at a uniform rate to a mill flow, such as a launder conveying pulp, and then determine the concentration of the added chemical in a sample of the pulp. From this procedure the tonnage can be calculated. Common table salt has proved the most satisfactory chemical for ordinary conditions. It has many decided advantages for use in tonnage determinations, among them being the following:

The Powder River Basin of northeast Wyoming was the first area in the state to receive attention during the early days of uranium exploration. Although the uranium occurrences are many and widespread, most of the known ore deposits are quite small and difficult to mine. As a result of this, detailed regional exploration in the Powder River Basin has been neglected. The uranium ore deposits occur in that part of the Wasatch Formation that is of earliest Eocene age, and they are scattered over an area of about 400 square miles. All uranium ore deposits are associated with red beds or altered sandstones within the Wasatch Formation. Uranium ore was first shipped from the region in 1953. Total production through June of 1965 is 506,257 tons of uranium ore containing 1,922,527 pounds of U3O8. The average grade of ore is about 0.19 per cent U3O8. The major producing area of the Powder River Basin is the Monument Hill district where about 91 per cent of the basin's total uranium ore has been mined. The source of uranium is presumed to have been the Oligocene, Miocene, and perhaps Pliocene tuffaceous rocks that once overlay the area. Joints, fractures, and permeable beds or zones were the passageways for the migration of uraniferous waters from the overlying beds to the Eocene host rocks.

Diamond-drill blasthole sloping has now been used for a long enough time to permit us to discuss fairly its problems from the ore-breaking angle and to attempt to peer into its future. To do this we have gathered information from many properties through questionnaires. The operators have indicated fairly well in their answers what they think of the method. The many variations of methods have by now been fairly well developed, and performance rates and. mining costs are well established at each property. All this can be laid down on paper with fair completeness. Now. knowing all this, what will the future of the method be? To attempt to look into the future of a mining method immediately brings to light many problems and variables. For instance: why were diamond drills used in the first place? What has the cost trend been? In what type of deposit has the method proved most advantageous? What will the future cost of diamonds be? What are the possible substitutes?

THE object of refining copper in the reverberatory furnace is to obtain a metal which will have the highest attainable degree of malleability, ductility and electric conductivity, and present at the same time a level surface when it solidifies in the mold after casting. These desirable physical properties are governed by the character of the impurities and the forms in which they are present, by the amount of cuprous oxide retained by the copper, by the quantity of gas held in solid solution, by the casting-temperature, and by the thickness of the casting. The effects of impurities, of cuprous oxide and of gases upon the mechanical properties of copper have been studied by Hampe in his classical paper "Contributions to the Metallurgy of Copper." The most recent research into the effect of metals upon the electrical conductivity of copper is that of Addicks.2 The influence of cuprous oxide upon the electrical conductivity has been investigated by Walker' and Addicks.4 The absorption of gases has received' attention by Hampe,5 Stahl 6 and Heyn.7 The effects of casting-temperature have been noted by Stahl.8

OUR early knowledge of history and geography attracted most of us to the mineral resources of South America. The romantic tales of the Spanish activities, which were curiously alluring, and Prescott's exceptional bi-Conquest histories-Mexico and Peru-no doubt fired our minds with the .then metallic wealth of the Spanish colonies. Later developments, intensified within the past eighty years, have, however, changed its fame which now rests on such metallics as copper and tin, and among the non-metallics on nitrate of soda and petroleum. South America proper, excluding Panama, is made up of thirteen countries, a coincident parity with our original thirteen States. Its area is given as 7,231,300 square miles, or slightly less than North America (8,037,000 square miles), is made up as follows:

In a laboratory study of grinding and classification' of silica sand, a satisfactory means of producing the medium-fine specification sand desired by producers of flint-glass containers was developed. The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.

It is not the purpose of the writer to set forth in these notes anything new or surprising in blast-furnace practice, but simply to lay before the Institute the somewhat unusual results obtained during a period of six consecutive months, ending April 30, 1896, at the Dover furnace of the Penn Iron and Coal Co., and to give, with these results, the conditions under which they were obtained, and all figures pertaining to that period. This plant was entirely rebuilt, on thoroughly modern and improved plans, in the spring of 1895, by Frank C. Roberts & Co., of Philadelphia.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) THE first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in commission at Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but none of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California early conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was. shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. This was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottom of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts were made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type was floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for R. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Oroville ground instead of in a turbulent stream, where the dredge was wrecked during a flood, and was not repaired. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of California, showing gold-dredging areas. It is not my intention to narrate in detail the history of the early failures in gold-dredging, and the various steps in the development of the modern boat, but merely to touch upon this in a general way, and to call attention to the wide difference in capacity and operating-cost between the first successful dredge, with an actual capacity of 600 cu. yd. per day-though its rated capacity was in excess of this-and the present modern dredge with 15-cu. ft. buckets, and an average capacity of 250,000 cu. .yd. per month. THERE is a road into the microscopic realm that has remained untraveled through all these years of intense activity with high-power optical and electron microscopy. The road is worthy of careful scouting by metallurgists and other investigators, for it leads into relatively new country and it makes some areas accessible that heretofore could be reached only by very indirect paths or by the use of imagination. And when the road passes through familiar territory it frequently permits a new view of commonplace things that should prove of value from time to time. An accepted way to interest people in new sights such as this is to present an illustrated travelogue. This I propose to do, using many pictures taken in my recent exploration of this road. In the manner of travelogues, I shall touch briefly upon a large number of different subjects in physical metallurgy and shall, attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of none, for the objective is to provide a means for further research, to interest others in it, and to indicate what appears at the moment to be profitable directions for it to take. The method I shall present involves X-rays, but does not make use of the usual accompaniments of X-ray research such as reciprocal lattices, Fourier series, or the stereographic projection. The method is so simple in its fundamentals that it could have been developed 20 years ago, or perhaps even 30 years ago. It is well to have a destination for our travels, so that when we are through we shall have explored some region of importance, despite our preoccupation with the novel means of transportation and our interest in the sights to be seen along the way. So let us name the Cold Worked State as our destination, and make side trips into the territories known as Recovery, Recrystallization, and Precipitation-hardening. A great many investigations have been made of the nature of cold-worked metal, and a great variety of methods used, many of which are indirect, such as X-ray line intensities, X-ray line widths, calorimetric measurements, and magnetic measurements. Since comprehensive reviews of these investigations have been published in recent years, they need not be discussed here. The investigations that were the direct forerunners of the present work should be first mentioned. In 1931 I became interested in the structure of individual spots in X-ray diffraction patterns.1 When a crystal is placed in the narrow pencil of X-rays in a Laue camera, the spots recorded on the film are not always uniformly black, but may have an internal structure. The meaning of this may be understood from Fig. 1, which represents a narrow beam containing X-rays of many wave lengths ("general radiation") penetrating a crystal in the direction of the arrow and forming a pattern on the vertical film at the right.

Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. This appreciable improvement in gravity concentration practice has been substantiated by several full-sized plants.

PHOSPHATE ROCK is a low- priced commodity. This fact has influenced the choice of mining and beneficiating methods to a greater degree, perhaps, than in most other low-grade mining operations. The fact that many yards of everburden and matrix must be stripped and mined per ton of salable "rock" produced and sold has necessitated he development of relatively simple btneficiating plants having high capacity and low capital and operating costs. The law of diminishing returns must always be reckoned with in phosphate mining and washing, and often recovery must be sacrificed in favor of costs in order to achieve the highest over-all economic efficiency. The phosphate-bearing formation, known as "matrix," is composed of (1) phosphate pebbles, which are somewhat rounded in shape and which vary in size from 1-in, to micron sizes, (2) rounded quartz grains usually smaller than 10 mesh, and (3) clay, of varying "stiffness," which is the binder of the matrix. The phosphate pebbles vary in hardness. Their color, which varies from white to black, is not a reliable indicator of the Bone Phosphate of Lime (B.P.L.) content of the

Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as near term and Potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers and blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.
