WHEN dry chlorine gas is made to act in the cold upon finely¬divided gold,' it converts the latter with evolution of heat into auro-auric chloride, Au2CI4, a hard, dark-red, hygroscopic salt. Moisture splits this salt into aurous and aerie chloride, Au2C14 = AuCI + AuCI3; treatment with water converts it into auric chloride and gold, 3 Au2CI4 = 4 AuC13 + Au,. Aurous chloride, when stirred with water, undergoes a similar decomposition, 3 AuCI = AuCI3 + Au,. These decompositions of auro-auric chloride and of aurous chloride furnish the explanation for the practice of moistening an ore before it is treated by the Plattner chlorination-process; practical experience having shown that gaseous chlorine gave an unsatisfactory extraction with dry ore. According to Rose,' fine gold is acted upon more slowly by chlorine than gold containing some base metal, e.g., copper. He also states that small quantities of silver increase the rate of solution, but adds that the coating of silver chloride formed checks, and finally stops, further action, if the percentage of silver be increased beyond a certain undetermined amount. Bromine' acts upon finely-divided gold in a manner similar to chlorine; the auro-auric bromide, Au2Br4, however, is not hygroscopic. Upon treatment with water it is decomposed as is the corresponding chlorine salt. It is generally believed that bromine does not act as energetically upon gold as does chlorine. To present some idea as to how the Bureau of Mines may most effectively serve mining, it is necessary that we make some resume of its pact accomplishments in order to determine what, if any, changes will be of greatest service to the industry and to the nation. There are a great many times in life when one begins to wonder whether or not Emerson, in his famous epigram about "mousetraps" and "beaten paths" and "final recognition of intrinsic worth", took into account the item of time. The intrinsic value of any movement, of any work, of any accomplishment will ultimately be recognized, of that there is no doubt, but may a man in history has gone to his end in martyrdom because the world was slow in the acknowledgement of the true excellence of his worth, and this is likewise true of institutions.

A mathematical model was developed to assess the costs for reclamation of surface mining using the shovel overcasting operation, the front end loader operation, and a backfilling operation. A literature review was made of the present laws in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia pertaining to surface mining and of the various parameters that influence the input data for a mathematical model. It was determined that the working mathematical model would have to be applied on an area to area basis, preferably on a permit by permit basis in the area where surface mining was being done. To this end, a flexible model was developed with input data obtained from the area of study. The results of the study show that the cost per ton of coal for reclamation can be estimated for various reclamation levels. Validation of the model was done for selected permits from Virginia. It was determined that the permits could easily be used for input data to the model.

"The major Archean gold deposits in the Red Lake greenstone belt, which have produced over 374 million grams of gold since 1930, occur near the top of the lower komatiitic to tholeiitic mafic to ultramafic metavolcanic sequence. The upper calc-alkalic mafic to felsic rocks form three discrete and separate ediftces overlymg this lower sequence.The gold deposits are classified according to their stratigraphic or lithologic associations into:1) mafic-volcanic-hosted deposits;2) felsic-intrusive-hosted deposits; and3) stratabound deposits.Group 1 and to a lesser extent Group 2 deposits occur within zones of alteration several square kilometres in extent. The nature of this pervasive alteration can be characterized by comparison of petrochemical data from the altered rocks and their fresher equivalents some distance away. The altered rocks have substantial addition of SiO2> CO2, K2O, As and Sb and subtraction of Na20, CaO, MgO and total Fe. Cr, Ni, Co and Zr appear to have been relatively immobile. Hydrothermal alteration and gold deposition probably accompanied early fumarolic activity and continued during subsequent deformation the metavolcanic sequence, with gold eventually being mobtltzed and concentrated into major vein structures to form the present orebodies. The smaller Group 2 deposits formed by emplacement of felsic intrusions into already altered, anomalously gold-bearing mafic metavolcanics, with the heat from the intrusions setting up parasitic hydrothermal systems which mobilized the gold and deposited it along with minor sulphides in fractures in the cooling intrusions."

The Wabana deposit of Dosco Industries Limited is situated on the east coast of Newfoundland, at Bell Island in Conception Bay. It is a Clinton-type iron-formation of Lower Ordovician age. Five separate beds have been recognized, with others noted locally. Economic production has been obtained from the Lower, Middle and Upper beds, which are second, third and fifth in sequence, al-though at present only the Lower Bed is worked. The potential area of occurrence is about 70 square miles. It i;; bounded by major faults to the north, east and west and truncated by erosion at the south, where rocks of the de-posit crop out on the north side of the island. The iron is contained in oolitic hematite and chamosite, with minor siderite. As the deposit is submarine, conventional exploration methods are not applicable and much interpretation and projection from mined areas is necessary to guide exploration and development. With the interpretation of information from existing mined ores, it is possible, using a minimum of diamond drilling in advance of working faces, to maintain adequate ore reserves.

A record $19.7 billion in minerals was produced by United States industries in 1963. This was some $800 million above the previous high established in 1962. Preliminary statistics compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines show that most metals, nonmetals, and fuels gained both in value and volume of production. The 1963 total represents the largest value increase since 1956 and continues an upward trend begun in 1959. Product.ion and value of all mineral fuels rose, with anthracite registering a remarkable 20% value increase. Nonmetals advanced 591 in value, gains exceeding losses by 213 to 1 among individual commodities. Heavier industrial demand and the settling of labor difficulties were among the factors contributing to increased output of such materials as iron ore, bauxite, molybdenum, lead, and zinc, which accounted for most in€ the growth in metal output. Silver prices continued to rise and, as a result, production value of that metal gained 132,.

During the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected several lots of ore' from properties in the vicinity of Winkelman, Ariz. As none of the ores would be marketable directly, an investigation was made to determine their amenability to concentration by ore dressing. The Geronimo group of claims is in Pinal County, 8 miles west of Winkelman, Ariz. The manganese oxides occur as cementing material in ore zones of conglomerate. Representative samples of a 2-ton lot of ore cut from outcrops of two lenticular deposits were laboratory-tested. Two 1-ton samples from the Benningfield property were similar in physical characteristics but differed in grade. This claim is 11-1/2 miles south of Winkelman and about 1 mile west of the San Pedro River on the south side of Putman, Wash. The manganese minerals occurred as nodules and lenses, replacing limestone, in a capping over a dark, igneous dike. The North Star group consists of five claims on the west side of the San Pedro River 14 miles south of Winkelman. The ore consists of a low-grade, manganese oxide-calcite occurrence interspersed with stringers of higher-grade material and is present as filling in a fissure zone in porphyry. Two samples were obtained by the examining engineer; one sample represented run-of-mine material, the other represented ore from the vein that could be hand-sorted or selectively mined.

The pigments, whose colors are due primarily to iron exides and iron hydroxides, comprise a variety of yellow, brown, red, and sometimes black paint-coloring agents, both natural and artificially prepared. The natural pigments in this group include ocher, umber, sienna, mineral paints, paint rock, and mortar colors. When the natural color or tinting power--either in the raw state or after treatment--is too weak, these pigments may be "forti- fied" or strengthened. Ocher, umber, and sienna, rhile often described as "iron oxide pigments," are also known as "earthy" rigments. Inasmuch as the iron content of these pigments is, in general, somewhat lower than that of other iron oxide pigments, the ochers, umbers, siennes, and other brown earth pigments are not discussed in the present paper. In addition to a discussion of natural or artificial pigments whose color is due to the presence of iron oxide in some form, this paper contains data on mortar colors, which are medium or low grade pigments used for tinting mortar, cement, and concrete. A great variety of materials are used for theso purposes, including "blue billy" (residue left from roast- ing pyrite), ground slate and shale, and even culm from coal washeries. Dur- ing the past three years, there has been a definite trend among the producers of iron oxide pigments to push the sales of the better grades of colors for tinting mortars. Due to the amount of low-grade coloring matter that is re- quired to impart a strong color to concrete (in soro cases as high as 15 per cent of pigment is necessary) the strength of the cement may be materially impaired. The addition of some 2 per cent of the higher grades of iron oxide to the concrete mix imparts a brighter and stronger colcr, does not weaken the material, and in the end is not as expensive as the low-grade pigments formerly used. Iron oxide pigments occur in nature in various shades and colors, but the red pigments are the most important and account for the larger part of the total red pigments used.3/ The nomenclature of these red pigments is involved and the names given to them are descriptive of the shade rather than of origin, method of produc- tion or chemical composition. In most cases the red pigments under this class may occur naturally or may be produced by heating hydrous iron oxide pigments such as yellow ocher to a sufficiently high temperature to drive off the water of composition. They may also be prepared by fortifying naturally-occurring pigments with stronger natural or synthetic oxides or with coal-tar dyes (e.g. alizarine lake), Most of the mineral reds derive their color from the presence of ferric oxide (Fe2O3), the mineral hematite. This may be present in relatively small percentages, as in the red slates and shales, or it may constitute as much as 90 per cent or more of the material, as in Spanish red. The principal iron oxide pigments used in the manufacture of paint are discussed in the following pages.

Ore and concentrate are transported on, the surface at western mining districts by (1) railroads, (2) surface trams, (3) aerial trams, (4) trucks, and (5) wagons, and (6) on the backs of animals. The daily and ultimate tonnage to be moved is the principal factor governing the selection of the method of transportation. Railroads are preferred when large tonnages are to be hauled over relatively long distances. The mine-haulage system may be extended or surface trams built to the mill or shipping point if a practical track grade is possible and if the distance is relatively short. Aerial trams have a special field of usefulness for transportation over steep or excessively rough terrain.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. The recovery of gold from sands and gravels is one of the oldest forms of mining; it antedates history and has been practiced by savage peoples. In North America the search for placer gold has been a powerful agency in the exploration and development of unknown regions and has profoundly influenced the course of our civilization. With the progress of invention, the improvements in machinery, and the availability of large capital for the conduct of great operations, the tendency in placer, as in many other branches of mining, has been toward the working of extensive but comparatively low-grade deposits. The early miner washed the rich spots in stream beds or terraces with his pan, his long tom, and his primitive sluice. Then followed the growth of hydraulic mining and the use of giants supplied with water under pressures of hundreds of pounds to the square inch that could work at a profit gravels whose gold tenor was less than 3 cents to the cubic yard. Finally came the dredge that could handle deposits lying so far below water level as to be beyond attack by other methods. Although the gold dredge was first successful on a commercial scale in New Zealand, it has reached its present strength and efficiency in this country and its development is a monument to the daring, per- severance and technical skill of the many men, mine owners and engineers who have each contributed something to the final result. The Bureau of Mines, authorized to conduct investigations for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the mineral industries, had its attention called some years ago to the need of a comprehensive report on gold dredging in the United States. The director of the bureau recognized that such a report should summarize the development of the gold dredge, should describe in detail the essential features of present-day dredges, should discuss the facts that determine whether a placer deposit can be profitably dredged, and should point out the approved methods of prospecting placer ground and of operating dredges. At the request of the director, the author undertook the preparation of such a report and has been intermittently engaged on the task for several years. This bulletin is the outcome of his labors. He hopes that it will prove of interest to designers and builders of dredges, to mining engineers, and to persons who may contemplate investing capital in placer-mining ventures.

"In uranium mines, the purification of underground mine air can be accomplished by the removal of dust particles and radon daughters using filters. Full-scale statistically designed experiments with flow rates up to 10,000 cfm have been conducted at Denison Mines Ltd. on mine air filtration with vermiculite as a filter material. Various filtration bed thicknesses were chosen, with different face velocities through each bed thickness. Results on total dust, respirable dust and radon daughter collection efficiencies were analysed statistically. It is shown that these collection efficiencies are directly related to the filter bed thickness. However, the different face velocities seem to affect only the collection of radon daughters. Optimum collection efficiencies for a clean bed of about 30% were found for respirable dust and radon daughters, and about 41>% for total dust, using an 8-in.-thick bed and a face velocity of 500 fpm. Dust build-up on the filter bed during operation led to an increase in collection efficiency, reaching 40 to 60% after two weeks."

This paper describes the development of an alternative technique for measuring the matte level height in sulphide smelting furnaces. The initial studies involved applying electrochemical oxygen probes in a smelting furnace to measure the oxygen potentials of the matte and slag phases. However, these measurements were not successful as a result of low temperatures, preventing there ference electrode from attaining equilibrium during the measurements. These trials were followed up by using oxygen probes containing a (Mo + MoO2) reference electrode instead of the(Cr + Cr2O3) reference electrode used previously. It was shown that with some further development work, it should be possible to measure the oxygen potential of these mattes accurately. Further measurements were performed with a magnetic sensor in sulphide mattes. It was shown that an electronic signal, which is proportional to the magnetic susceptibility of the surrounding material, was generated during immersion into liquid matte. These measurements were extended and done in a smelting furnace. Initial results indicated that when the magnetic sensor was dipped through the slag layer into the matte, a signal was generated as soon as the sensor came in contact with the matte. Measurements are ongoing in order to record (on a computer for improved accuracy) the signal as a function of distance when the sensor is immersed through the slag layer into the matte phase. The magnetic sensor measurements may be the solution to a matte level measurement problem that has existed for a few decades in matte smelting furnaces.

"INTRODUCTION During the first phases of the war emergency the shortage of aluminum prompoted the Bureau of Mines to investigate methods for using low-grade bauxites of high silica content and also clays as raw-material sources of this strategic metal. The Bayer process treats low-silica bauxites to provide the industry with a major portion of the purified alumina, which contains very low percentages of silica and other impurities. One of the methods investigated in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for low-grade materials is the lime-soda sinter process, which was studied on a pilot-plant scale. In this process, the alumina content of the alumina-bearing minerals Bs made water-soluble by sintering the raw material with limestone and soda. Simultaneously, the siliceous material is rendered insoluble. The sinter is extracted with an alkaline liquor, and the resulting extract liquor is treated as follows to recover the alumina: (1) Autoclaving with lime to remove silica as a zeolitic complex and (2) treatment with CO2 to precipitate alumina as the trihydrate (A1203.3H20). Figure 1 is schematic flow sheet of this process.As the process is cyclic, it is necessary that nearly all of the soda and alumina remaining in the plant liquors after carbonation be recovered. Upon passing through one cycle, these liquors contain 14 to 15 percent NaCO3 2 to 5 percent NaOH, 1 to 3 percent A1203, minor amounts of silica, and, with certain materials such as Pennsylvania diasporic clays, 0.5 to 1.0 percent Na2S04. Approximately 50 percent of the Na20 in these liquors must be returned, as soda ash, to the dry-grinding and raw-materials blending operations. Previous work (6)5/ on sulfate-free solutions demonstrated that two methods for recovering Na20 were feasible, namely: (1) Salting out Na2C03.H20 by evaporation of the carbonated solutions and (2) crystallizing Na2C03.10H20 by cooling the concentrated carbonated solutions."
