The highly-efficient and economically-feasible technology for bitumen recovery from US oil sands using a water extraction approach was developed at the end of the last century. This water-based bitumen extraction process has been optimized based on observations and analysis of microscopic mechanisms of bitumen release from oil sands and the bitumen transfer to a froth product as well as measurements of interfacial properties of bitumen. The wetting mechanisms that occur in the diluent-assisted water-based processing of US oil sands include bitumen film rupture and recession on sand grains and bitumen transfer to nucleated and injected gas bubbles. These mechanisms are reviewed in this contribution.

O trabalho teve por objetivo produzir uma liga Al AA1070 com granulometria fina a partir de um material com granulometria grosseira, por meio de deformação plástica severa (DPS) aplicada por prensagem por canais equiangulares (ECAP) via rota C, bem como esclarecer e avaliar os mecanismos responsáveis pela evolução microestrutural durante este processo de prensagem. O processo empregou a rota C com 5 passes consecutivos a frio e acumulou uma deformação ?5 = 5,95. O material de partida é proveniente de um processo de laminação a quente, com uma microestrutura de grãos grosseiros com tamanho de grão de 16 ± 18 µm. Foi realizada a caracterização microestrutural com o auxílio das técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e de difração de elétrons retroespalhados. O refinamento microestrutural foi realizado eficientemente alcançando uma microestrutura fina, observou-se uma redução de 80% alcançando um tamanho de grão de 3,38 µm, e um aumento da fração de contornos de alto ângulo passando de 23% a 46%. A partir dos resultados obtidos nas análises conclui-se que os mecanismos responsáveis pela evolução microestrutural foram os processos de subdivisão por meio de fragmentação e rotação de grãos, recuperação e recristalização dinâmica.

"The Mount Polley copper/gold project is located in central British Columbia and is currently being developed by Imperial Metals Corporation. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was required to develop acceptable metallurgy for recovery of both sulphide and oxide copper-gold mineralization. Copper recovery is highly sensitive to oxide copper content of the feed whereas gold is primarily associated with the copper sulphide minerals. A conventional flowsheet where sulphide flotation is followed by sulphidization and oxide scavenging is described. The conventional flowsheet was used in a feasibility study which resulted in a favourable production decision at Mount Polley. Detailed engineering and permitting are in progress.More recently, laboratory and pilot testing of a new flotation reagent, S-6493*, an oxide specific collector, has indicated that improved copper recovery can be accomplished with reduced reagent consumption, including elimination of the sulphidization step, using S-6493 compared with the conventional flowsheet. The comparative metallurgical results using S-6493 and conventional sulphidization methods are presented, from both bench scale and pilot testing. Comparative economics of the conventional flowsheet and that using S-6493 are also presented. Advantages of S-6493 include reduced reagent costs, increased revenues from additional copper recovery, and overall reduction in capital and plant operating costs due to the simplified flowsheet. INTRODUCDONThe Mount Polley copper/gold property is located in Central British Columbia, 56 air kilometres northeast of Williams Lake. The first recorded exploration was in 1964. By 1989, a total of 238 diamond drill holes, totalling 27, 522 meters, was completed to detail reserves on the Mount Polley prospect. A number of drill core composites were submitted, containing a variety of oxide copper levels, for metallurgical flowsheet development. Six bulk samples were collected from surface trenches for additional bench scale testing and for pilot plant testing."

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. THIS PAPER deals with the analysis of results from axial testing of vertical single piles, i.e. the most common field test per-formed. Despite the numerous tests which have been carried out and the many Papers which have reported on such tests and the analysis thereof, the understanding of pile test loading in current engineering practice leaves much to be de-sired. The reason for this is that the engineers have concerned themselves with mainly only one question: "Does the pile have a certain least capacity?", finding little of practical value in analysing the actual capacity and the pile-soil interaction. This Paper aims to show that engineering value can be gained from elaborating on a pile test ? during the actual testing in the Held, as well as in the analysis of the results. The first portion of the notes make use of an earlier Paper by the author (Fellenius. 1975). However, additional views and recent literature have been incorporated.

A THEORETICAL consideration of the mechanics of various water-flooding systems with the viewpoint of comparing their relative merits involves the study of two fundamental properties of such systems. On the one hand, it is important to determine the efficiency of the flood as measured by the percentage of the total area that is swept out by the encroaching water before water actually reaches the output wells. This is really a measure of the regional tendency of the water to "bypass" the oil. On the other hand, the various systems must be compared from the viewpoint of their resistances which determine the rate of fluid production obtainable for given pressures maintained at the water input wells. The first of these questions has been studied and very definite answers have been obtained by means of simple electrolytic models.1 These models showed that, in an ideal system, the percentages of the areas flooded out before water reaches the output wells are about 57 per cent for the direct line-drive flood (the input and output wells being equally spaced and placed in alternate parallel lines), 74 per cent for the regular five-spot network, and 79 per cent for the seven-spot network. With respect to the efficiency of the usual flooding arrangements, they are, therefore, given quite accurately by the above numbers. With regard to the resistances of the flooding networks, electrical conduction models have also been used successfully2 and are well adapted to the problem of determining experimentally the pressure distribution and streamlines, or over-all resistances of specific flooding networks. However, such models do not permit readily a study of the effect of changing dimensions or configuration within a network, since a new model must be made up for each set of dimensions considered.

Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

Peñasquito is Mexico's largest gold producer, consisting of two open pits - Peñasco and Chile Colorado - containing gold, silver, lead and zinc. Over the next three years, mining activities in the pit are expected to be focused on lower grade ore in the upper parts of the Peñasco pit while stripping is emphasized to ensure an economically optimal pit shell design to maximize the net asset value of the operation. By 2019, Peñasquito’s gold production is expected to benefit from an improvement in mined grades as it recommences mining higher grades at the bottom of the Peñasco pit and significantly enhanced metallurgical recoveries with the planned completion of the Pyrite Leach Project ("PLP").

The conventional wave equation analysis without control of the representativeness of the parameters to the actual conditions does not provide accurate results. However, the representatives can be vastly improved by means of using the results of monitoring the dynamic response in a pile during driving. Dynamic monitoring displays the interaction of independent strain and acceleration measurements having directly propor­tional response to impacts, but inversely proportional response to re­flections from the soil. Examples are given and the CAPWAP method used to calculate from the measurements the dynamic pile and soil para­meters and mobilized soil resistance is outlined. The dynamic monitoring technique and analysis has been accepted internationally and been incor­porated into Building Codes. The prediction is offered that in five year's time, no major piling project will be undertaken without dynamic monitoring and analysis.

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

The DOT Tunneling method combines two conventional earth pressure balance shield machines in an overlapping cylindrical arrangement. The method allows two tunnels to be driven simultaneously with mini¬mum cross sectional area. Two full size trials, one configured horizontally and one vertically stacked, were successfully completed employing the DOT method. The method was then utilized for the new transportation system. The goggle-shaped DOT machine, 9.36 m high by 15.86 m wide, is the largest earth pressure balance shield machine in the world. This paper includes a general description of the DOT tunneling method as well as a history of its development.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. North of Antwerp central train station, two single-track tunnels for the high-speed train line between Brussels and Amsterdam were constructed. At the same time, the central train station was modified to a through station. Both 1.23 km tunnels are situated in the Antwerp sands and were constructed using a slurry shield machine. Due to the inner city location, the tunnels run over their entire length underneath structures, in some cases with only minimal clearance. The paper deals with these challenging situations. In addition, the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel lining and measures to limit settlements will be introduced.

All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

El presente texto describe la implementación del método Flash - Flotation para el proceso de optimización de plantas concentradoras polimetálicas en la Compañía minera Raura donde se tienen diferentes gravedades especificas por cada especie mineralógica. Su aplicación comprende la fase de investigación (año 89), modificaciones (año 2002) durante la etapa de escalamiento industrial y la optimización (año 2004) de estos equipos en la empresa, los cuales no han requerido de una gran inversión. Asimismo, los beneficios de operar con la celda SK-80 y SK-240 directamente a la descarga de los molinos primarios, permite optimizar el control metalúrgico. En este sentido, la idea de separar el plomo tan pronto lo permita el sistema, es la forma correcta de optimizar la metalurgia de este en la Compañía minera Raura.

Gold rush histories are usually written as though they were unique events in the development of a region or nation. While this is a valid way of looking at gold rushes, it is not the only way. This paper is a brief attempt to relate the West Coast rushes to a wider context. During the second half of the nineteenth century the lure of gold transformed the Pacific Rim. Gold rushes drew more than half a million Europeans and Americans to lands bordering the Pacific. By 1900 a chain of mining, industrial and urban centres ran from California to Alaska; from Ballarat to New Guinea, and on to Western Australia. The New Zealand rushes were a significant chapter in this story. People, cargo and information passed from rush to rush. Techniques learned on earlier goldfields were imported; those developed in New Zealand were, in turn, taken up elsewhere. Administrative systems and regulations developed in Australia were implemented in New Zealand, improved and passed on to Canada. This interconnectedness was so strong that gold-seekers thought of the mining regions as a distinct culture, 'the whole digging world'. Much can be made of the similarities shared by rushes. But comparison can also highlight the individuality of each rush. +The early days of the West Coast rushes were perhaps the strongest assertion of a diggers' culture. A brief period in which a remarkable orderliness was created through mateship, self-regulation, and the occasional threat of rough justice. The West Coast rushes were both a unique experience and an integral part of a process which transformed the Pacific Rim during the nineteenth century. Understanding their part in that bigger story highlights just how unique they were.

Those parts can be encapsulated in polyurethane if necessary.To fabricate the Tyrethane® section we have three basic building blocks. The McDonald gold project and two satellite gold deposits near Lincoln, MT were discovered in the early 1990s. They contain at least 307.9 t (9.9 million oz) of gold and 933 t (30 million oz)of silver. The McDonald gold deposit alone contains 223.9 t (7.2 million oz) of gold reserves that can be open-pit mined and processed by cyanide heap leaching at a projected cash operating cost of $6.10/g ($190/oz). The deposit is predominantly oxidized with no chance of acid production. It can be mined, operated and reclaimed with minimal permanent environmental disturbance other than the creation of an open-pit filled with a fresh-water lake that would support trout.
