When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. In June 1958 four full faces were blasted, and in October 1958 full face grunching without prior cutting, Le. inducer shotfiring, was introduced in No. 1 Tunnel as a production feature. BATMINÖ, BATMINEÖ, BATMINDÖ are an abbreviation for Business Analysis Tools for Mining, Mine Evaluation and Mine Design respectively. BATMINP are proprietary tools customised to suit individual client requirements. The first suite of tools provides for analysis and evaluation of open pit mining equipment alternatives and includes fleet selection, fleet sizing and production, productivity and economic outcomes. The models address all mine process activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and auxiliary services. All models are built to provide for simultaneous evaluation of multiple alternatives that are time and condition related. Provision is made for modelling from first principles and/or default or shortcut inputs. Sensitivities to key input parameters are easily performed and consistent logic is applied throughout the process. The models are built to provide key outputs in a format suitable for presentation and documentation. Provision is also made in the models for validation of both inputs and outputs through benchmarking, back analysis and budget comparison. The same models can be used for short interval (12 month) planning and control, medium-term (three to five years) and long-term life-of-mine (LOM) planning. Millions of dollars are spent each year on mining plant and equipment. Decisions that impact on the medium and long-term are made. BATMINP tools have been used to perform studies with good results and in most cases the studies have been validated through back analysis and comparing model outcomes to real data.

In August 2006 a technical alliance was formed between Orica Mining Services and Century Mine to provide blasting solutions. The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

Part of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine production is in the process of transitioning from the deep ore zone (DOZ) mine to the deep mill level zone (DMLZ) mine. The DMLZ mine is the next lift in the caving series and lies 500 m below the current DOZ footprint.In order to reduce the need for a very expensive additional ventilation system for the DMLZ mine, it was decided to reconfigure some infrastructure and upgrade the performance of the three existing DOZ mixed flow ventilation fans in situ, reducing the new fans required to two. This was far less costly than providing complete new installations.These fans are installed in individual underground chambers in DOZ mine exhaust drifts and connected to the DMLZ mine exhaust drifts system in 7 m × 7 m airways size, through sets of 6 m diameter by 500 m high raises.The upgrade process involved replacement of motors, fan shafts and bearings. The existing 1600 kW DOZ mixed flow fans are 3500 mm diameter and operate at a speed of 595 rev/min and were originally designed to deliver 390 m3/s at 3.3 kPa. Efficiency optimisation may be required at a later date.The upgraded DMLZ fans are required to deliver 425 m3/s at 3.7 kPa and it was necessary to increase in motor size and speed to 2200 kW at 710 rev/min. The paper describes the adopted technologies and performance controls related to a special geotechnical engineering solution provided within the scope of the Galataport Project, in Istanbul, Turkey. The scheme is the one applied to the new quay of Salipazari, which is a combination of retaining structure and ground improvement, formed by a combi-wall, a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall and a soil improvement by deep soil mixing (Turbojet). The paper highlights the importance of employing cutting-edge technologies within the foundation engineering field and state-of-the-art electronic control devices, in parallel with the essential human expertise, in order to obtain the desired results in this high profile Project. The results of the in-situ and laboratory tests carried out on the improved soil are also presented. Main discussed points are: • History of Galataport and main Project details. • Design principle and soil condition for the new quay of Salipazari. • Difficulties encountered during execution of DSM. • Preliminary field trial tests conducted to establish the operational parameters, with relevant in-situ and laboratory tests executed. • Preliminary tests on material used for DSM (seawater and CEM IV SR). • Electronic equipment mounted on the rig, which allows the automatic execution of DSM columns. • Final QA/QC tests conducted to verify the performance of DSM, mainly consisting in: coring with relevant laboratory tests on samples (UCS + Es), seismic refraction tomography and seismic cross hole tomography. Correlations between UCS and Es, and between Es and Edyn are also presented. • A cross section of the executed treatment could be inspected on site during excavation. Photos and considerations are also presented.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, steel, hearth, blast furnace The Mittal Steel Company operates about 36 blast furnaces on four continents. Furnaces range from 1100 m3 to 4800 m3 inner volume. The focus of the group is to push for increasing productivity and increasing campaign life. This has been especially challenging, as many of these furnaces were not equipped for long campaigns during their prior rebuilds. Monitoring and operating practices have to be modified to match the new philosophy. Mid-campaign hearth repair strategies and hearth design philosophies have had to be reconsidered. The paper describes experiences with the current hearth designs and measures taken for hearth life extension. Additionally, the philosophy of recent hearth re-designs is discussed.

An improved technique has been developed for the deoxidation of palladium with aluminum which is especially suitable for use in making small castings with an induction-melting and casting machine. The effect of various crucible linings on the efficiency of the residual deoxidizer and accompanying oxide film in protecting palladium against oxidation during remelting also has been examined; the preferred crucible lining consists of zirconia cement. THE objective of this work was to develop a simple method of deoxidizing induction-melted palladium which would be suitable for use by manufacturers of jewelry and other small castings. In a common method of deoxidizing torch-melted palladium a piece of aluminum foil is dropped on the surface of the molten metal. If a film is present, which is usually the case, it must first be removed by oxidizing the molten metal thoroughly because it would interfere with the entry of the aluminum into the melt. Removal of the film is probably facilitated by a mild fluxing action of the silica crucibles which are used for torch-melting. However, removal of an alumina film from molten palladium in the crucibles normally used for induction melting is a much slower process and it became necessary to modify the de-oxidation procedure. In the modified procedure the charge is simply melted and the desired amount of aluminum, crimped to one end of a tungsten wire, is plunged through the film into the palladium and the wire immediately withdrawn. The trace of tungsten which dissolves along with the aluminum can be avoided, if considered objectionable, by using a palladium wire. In view of the persistence of the alumina film under the conditions of induction-melting it also was decided to ascertain the efficiency of this film in protecting palladium against oxidation during repeated remelting and casting. Melting Equipment and Materials The equipment used for melting and casting consisted of an Ecco GC:6, 6 to 8-kva high-frequency converter and an Ecco M34B centrifugal casting machine. This unit is being increasingly used for making jewelry and dental castings and it also has been found useful in making exploratory melts of a variety of nickel alloys, for which purpose it is well suited on account of its speed of melting and economy of material. A description of the machine and its operation will be published elsewhere.' A common palladium jewelry alloy, 95.5 palladi-um-4.5 ruthenium (referred to as "palladium" in the trade), was selected for the deoxidation tests. It was available as melting stock which had been melted in air to free it from oxidizable impurities, and also as clean scrap from previous melts which had been deoxidized with aluminum. The latter was thought to be typical of clean "palladium" scrap to be found in a manufacturing jeweler's establishment and it is also similar to one brand of "casting palladium." By the same token, the oxidized melting stock corresponds to "casting palladium" after the latter has been melted and thoroughly oxidized: Pure aluminum wire (99.9 pet), 0.032 in. diam; 1 in. = 0.036 g. Scrap tungsten wire, 0.014 to 0.020 in. diam. Argon, commercial water-pumped; 99.9 pet pure Experimental Procedure Samples of about 50 to 75 g of the palladium alloy were melted in a crucible lined with a proprietary refractory alumina cement. Some charges were melted in air, others in argon. The oxidized melting stock was melted and solidified a number of times in order to remove as much oxygen as possible before deoxidizing, but this treatment was unnecessary in the case of scrap. Todays End of Life vehicles are shredded and their metal components recovered and recycled by standard methods. The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

Keywords: AN-KN Phase Transition, Lattice Parameters of AN-KN, X-ray Diffraction The lattice parameters of the low and high temperature phase of KNO3-rich (in NH4NO3) solid solutions have been determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The low temperature single KNO3 phase (KN II) are from 92%-100% KNO3 in NH4NO3 composition range and from room temperature to 393 K showing in X-ray diffraction patterns. The high temperature KNO3 phase (KN I) showed very broad composition range between 20% to 100% KNO3. The lattice parameters of KNO3-rich (KN II and KN I) solid solutions have been calculated at different temperature range. The volumes of orthorhombic KN II phase decrease from 0.3208(3) to 0.3195(3) nm³ at the room temperature as the compositions increase from 95% to 100% KNO3. The lattice constants of the hexagonal KN I phase show that there is no significant change in a-direction when the temperature increases. Details X-ray results and lattice expansion equations during heating will be presented.

The Approach: Development of a device for interconnecting phone systems which permits two-way communication between a public telephone and a mine pagerphone by authorized personnel. How It Works: The system, developed by personnel at the Bureau's Pittsburgh (Pa.) Mining and Safety Research Center, makes connections between the public phone line and mine pagerphone line. As shown in Fig. 1., incoming calls are sensed by the ring detector (4) and the system "answers" the call electronically. To reach the pagerphone system, the caller inserts an audible tone of fixed frequency through the microphone of his telephone. This tone is produced by a miniature, pocket-carried tone generator and is detected by a tone recognition circuit (5). When this hap-pens, relay, switching, and logic circuitry (6) closes the connections between the two phone systems. Simultaneously, a page activator (9) places a DC paging voltage on the mine phone line.

Extruded Concrete Lining combines technological and financial advantages. The tunnel lining is reliably embedded in the surrounding ground as the fluid concrete is extruded at constant pressure directly behind the TBM supporting the exposed surface. Ground deformation from the TBM passage can be compensated and the ground will be pre-stressed by the extrusion process. Developments in concrete technology permit high speed tunneling by use of a slip formwork attached to the TBM. Realised projects in Milano (Italy), Lyon (France), Frankfurt (Germany) and Akima (Japan) will be demonstrated.

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

Turkish iron and steel sector, the base of which was established in the 1930?s, plays an important role in the industrialization and development of the country?s economy. In Türkiye this sector is the major consumer of ferroalloys. There had been a great improvement in Turkish Iron and Steel industry, especially after the 1980?sand as a result, 20.9 million tons of yearly crude steel production placed Türkiye 11th in the global steel output and 3rd in Europe. 15 % of steel produced in Türkiye is flat products, while the long products make the rest. The product composition and the general characteristics of steel production process led to an increase in ferroalloy consumption. Domestically consumed ferroalloys are especially ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon. As of today, ferroalloy production capacity of Türkiye is 173,800 tons/year; 161,500 tons of which is ferrochrome with high and low carbon grades, 7,300 tons of ferrosilicochrome and the rest is ferrosilicon (5,000 tons/year). Türkiye is one of leading ferrochrome producers in the world considering the above mentioned production figures. However, this production is mainly exported since Türkiye?s stainless steel production level is modest requiring low amounts of ferrochrome. The products of iron and steel industry in Türkiye require large quantities of other ferroalloys, which make Türkiye a major importer and exporter of ferroalloys. The aim of this work is to present production, consumption, import and export quantities of: ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrotitanium and ferrovanadium of Türkiye, between 1990 and 2006.

Sm-Co alloy is a kind of magnetic material with high power and has been applied in modern industry widely. In this study, the wet chemical co-precipitation was developed for synthesis of the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor. The thermodynamic analysis of the studied system was done to clarify the solution behavior theoretically based on the thermodynamic equilibrium and simultaneous equilibrium. Then, the experiments were done to address the various effects on the wet chemical process, including solution pH, reactant concentration, dispersant, reaction temperature and time, etc. It is found that by precise control of the process, the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor was synthesized with fine crystallization and special size & size distribution.

"Copper Mountain’s concentrator was commissioned in May 2011. The circuit consists of a 34’ x 20’ EGL SAG mill, a Raptor 900 pebble crusher and two 24’ x 39’6” ball mills. Each mill is equipped with a 2 x 8500 HP dual pinion drive system. The plant was designed to process 1585 mtph of SAG feed. From startup, the mill struggled to meet the required production rates. Over time, a major initiative that involved blasting and fragmentation, optimization of the SAG mill in terms of discharge grates, ball size and slurry density, and operation of up to three mobile pre-crushing plants resulted in significant increases in throughput. In parallel, a number of modeling tools, including JK SimMet, were run based on plant benchmarking exercises. Samples collected at the mine site during ramp up confirmed the very competent nature of the ore with drop weight - A*b values of less than 24 being recorded on a variety of plant feeds and lithologies. After due consideration including demonstration of proof of concept, a new pre-crushing circuit incorporating an XL2000 cone crusher and associated screening equipment was designed, constructed and commissioned at the site in August 2014. This paper reviews the history of the original circuit design, the various optimization steps taken and impacts, together with the final pre-crushing circuit and net results.IntroductionThe Copper Mountain Mine is located approximately 20 km south of Princeton, British Columbia, Canada (refer to Figure 1). The region has a long history of copper mining dating back to 1923. The Copper Mountain camp occurs in the 'eastern volcanic belt' of the Nicola Group (Monger, 1989). It is an alkali copper-gold deposit in which the volcanic strata are intruded by early Jurassic dykes, sills, irregular plugs and zoned plutons (Woodsworth et al., 1992). The stratified rocks are relatively fresh with slight metamorphism in the local contact regions."

Good toe breakage and a flat working bench after blasting are important parameters to achieve a high productivity during material loading and reduce the necessity for secondary blasting. Good toe breakage requires a proper burden – side spacing design and a suitable sub-drilling. With unfavourable jointed rock mass conditions the use of horizontal bottom holes still can be found as common work practice even that this is associated to high risks.
