Start with your assessment of the minerals business —domestic mining as well as operational and consulting perspectives. As a third generation miner, I have been living the mining business for as long as I can remember. I have watched commodity prices produce boom and bust cycles in places like Price, Utah (coal), Douglas, Arizona (copper) and Eureka, Nevada (gold). It is unsettling to see how our industry has fluctuated, but it always seems to rebound if you can stick out the down cycles. However, our most recent dip in the cycle was, in my opinion, characteristically and permanently different. In the past, when prices went south, people hunkered down and waited out the cycle until things came back, much the same as they had every other time. Not this time. This time, we saw a consolidation of the industry in proportions never seen before. Mega-mergers like Exxon-Mobil, Phelps Dodge-Cyprus and Newmont-Normandy have changed the complexion of our industry forever. And that is true not just of the mining companies; it happened across the supporting business lines as well. As a midsized niche engineering and environmental service provider to the mining industry, companies like mine are few and far between these days. The lean cycle saw many of the small and midsized providers get gobbled up by consulting giants like URS and TetraTech. The mentality of a mega-company, whether a commodity producer or a goods or service provider, is different than that of their small- and medium-sized counterparts.

One of New York City?s largest subway projects is under way 43 m (140 ft) beneath the surface of downtown Manhattan. The East Side Access project, more than 30 years in the making, was halted after a partial excavation in the 1970s due to a lack of funding. The project, once dubbed the ?Tunnel to Nowhere,? has been revitalized into a groundbreaking subway line that includes unique tunnel boring machines (TBM), construction methods and muck removal systems. Project overview The East Side Access project involves construction of a new 6.7-km (4.2-mile) subway line needed to relieve heavy traffic congestion between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. The line will serve approximately 160,000 commuters daily between Grand Central and Sunnyside rail stations. Manhattan and Queens will be connected under the East River by the 63rd Street tunnel, a submersed double-decker tube. The submersed tube consists of reinforced concrete sections barged in place on the riverbed. The tube contains operational subway lines on the top deck, while the bottom deck (the ?Tunnel to Nowhere?) will become operational when the East Side Access project is completed in 2013.

This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

Cave propagation is a complex process due to interacting variables such as mine geometry, rock mass heterogeneity and complex structural networks and stress fields. The Ernest Henry sublevel cave (SLC) is directly below an open pit, which provided an opportunity to observe and measure rock mass failure as the cave initiated and propagated through the pit wall. This paper describes interaction between the open pit and SLC as well as rock mass failure mechanisms observed from the start of the SLC to surface breakthrough.Cave propagation and slope failure mechanisms were found to be governed by intermediate structures, while the cave shape was largely controlled by cave-scale faults. The open pit, production-level geometry and production draw strategy were also important factors for cave and subsidence growth. Cave propagation was episodic and asymmetric in shape due to the orientation and relative position of geological structures, combined with the effects of the increasing SLC geometry and drawdown from the underlying production levels. The precursors and failure mechanism of a 2.5 Mt wall collapse are also reviewed in detail.Cave growth was simulated using a 3D, non-linear, discontinuum finite element model coupled with Newtonian Cellular Automata. During the response to the Moura No 4 disaster, use was made of the New South Wales Mines Rescue Service’s ‘Mineshield’ inertisation equipment. The equipment had to be transported from Newcastle, approximately 1400 kms, and the liquid nitrogen a similar distance. The time taken, and therefore availability of the liquid nitrogen, became a significant problem. Operational issues were also experienced during use. Typically the liquid nitrogen is converted to a gas (vaporised) before being injected into the mine. However, as the propane gas tanker used for the vapourising unit was delayed, an attempt was made to inject the liquid nitrogen directly down uncased boreholes. This proved unsuccessful.Following the Moura No 4 disaster and the Moura No 2 disaster, recommendations were made relating to having inertisation capacity for the Queensland coal mining industry. Today the Queensland industry has multiple options available for inertisation, including the high-volume GAG and smaller volume units such as boilers and membrane separation units. Although it ultimately aided re-entry into Moura No 4, most likely due to the issues associated with supply to Central Queensland, liquid nitrogen has not found favour within the Queensland industry as an inertisation tool.Coregas has commissioned an air separation plant in Mackay, improving the availability of liquid nitrogen to Central Queensland. Based on the availability of this nitrogen, recent sealing operations at Kestrel have trialled using liquid nitrogen and associated vapourising units. In the spring of 1999, construction commenced on the new Steelers Football Stadium in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Richard Goettle, Inc. (RGI) was the successful bidder to install the specified augercast piles for the foundation package. Description - Pittsburgh Steelers Stadium The new stadium will house the Pittsburgh Steelers Professional Football Team. It is widely believed that if a team is provided with a modern playing facility, that a winning season will ensue (Not always the case). The new stadium location is on the north side of Pittsburgh on the Ohio River, and just downstream of the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. The site is west of existing Three Rivers Stadium. The Three Rivers Stadium was built during the late sixties and housed both the Pirates Baseball and Steelers Football Teams. The Public Auditorium Authority elected to replace this outdated stadium with two new stadiums, one for each professional team. The landmark stadium was imploded in February of 2001.

The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmentallegislation has received increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental regulatory agencies and members of the public. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. There is thus the need to increase the base of knowledge on the existing practices of spoil dump design and rehabilitation. Efficient engineering design and systematic economic evaluation of spoil dump reshaping techniques for mine rehabilitation assists in maintaining the expected standards of environmental compliance. As part of the overall approach for effective engineering design ofspoil dumps, a comprehensive, computational and efficient tool isrequired for assessing the economics and productivity of existing spoil dump reshaping practices for efficient mine rehabilitation. Such a design tool is useful in linking current spoil dump environmental management practices with engineering design planning and economic impact evaluation. This paper identifies the processes for the economic impact evaluation for existing spoil dump reshaping practices and proposed final site dump designs. Selection of an efficient spoil dump design at optimum costs will ensure operational efficiency. A case study is presented identifying economic impact evaluation in earthmoving equipment selection and the costs involved for the reshaping of spoil dumps to that of varying final site designs.

The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). Environmental investigations have been undertaken by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) since 1981 when the Ok Tedi Environmental Study was commenced. Environmental monit- oring and management programmes were implemented in 1983. The programmes included water quality monitoring, river flow and sediment monitoring, surveillance of aquatic biological communities and a health and nutrition survey of the local people. These original programmes have continued, and additional programmes of work have been developed and revised to reflect changing operations and the need to focus investigations on specific areas and issues of concern. In April 1990, following the establishment by the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) of environmental management criteria for the Fly River system, compliance monitoring programs were introduced. Details of the compliance and additional monitoring programmes undertaken by OTML throughout the Ok Tedi and Fly catchments, including programmes of investigation in the Fly River estuary, Gulf of Papua and Torres Strait, are presented.

"The Wabush Mines project was formed in 1956 to develop a large iron ore property in Western Labrador. The town of Wabush along with the mining and concentrating facilities are located 640 air miles from Montreal, and 734 air miles from St. John's. The operation has been in production since late 1964.While mining and concentrating operations are located in Labrador, the pelletizing facilities are situated 275 miles south at Sept-Iles, Quebec. Dedicated in 1965, Wabush produces six million tons of high quality iron ore pellets annually. The company employs 1, 550 people at Wabush and the Pointe Noire plant at Sept-Iles.Wabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of three companies -The Steel Company of Canada, Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. and the remaining 58% by the Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. is in turn owned by six companies: The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Inland Steel Company, Interlake Inc., Wheeling Pittsburg Steel Company, Finsider International S.A. and Pickands Mather & Company which is also managing agent.The town of Wabush is set in a remote part of Northern Canada accessible only by rail and air transportation. But this in no way has hindered the growth and development of the area. Modern housing units, shopping facilities, airport and of course, recreational facilities are all patt of every day living amenities, an accepted aprt of southern communities, but quite unique for northern isolated mining localities."

Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

Recent developments in high torque hydraulic rotary rigs has lead to the construction of secant bored pile walls by rotary drilling methods in circumstances where earlier methods were difficult and in some cases impossible. The evolution of secant bored pile wall construction is described including classical, rotary drilled and continuous flight auger construction methods. The paper then details the restraints which have been created in recent inner city redevelopment, many of which were not relevant in the early days of the technique. Typical examples of walls are presented to show the adapatability and advantages of the secant bored pile wall method. A number of in-situ retaining wall construction techniques are then compared in detail with regard to relative cost, technical quality and practicality.

The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

The Flambeau and Ridgeway Mines, both owned and operated by wholly owned subsidiaries of Kennecott Minerals Company, were located very close to populated areas having initial concerns about health, safety and the environment. The success of both operations depended upon developing a framework of community support and enhancing sustainable development opportunities throughout the entire life cycle of the mining operations to address these concerns. The protection of the Flambeau River was the cornerstone of the Flambeau Mine’s success. The highest priority for the Ridgeway Mine was to ensure long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the reclaimed mine site. Both of these goals have been achieved and are discussed in this paper, which highlights Kennecott Minerals Company’s integration of sustainable development principles into its business decision-making and management processes.

"Mineralogical techniques including microscopic methods, reflected and transmitted light microscopy, Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), are useful in determining the quality of industrial minerals. They are essential for studying ores and metallurgical products including the evaluation of physical characteristics of the mineral, paragenetic relationships, associations with possible deleterious contaminants (e.g., sulphides), spatial distribution within the ore zones and liberation characteristics. The methods are inexpensive, and provide quick identification and distinction among the industrial minerals and the gangue minerals in a section. Additionally, SEM is necessary to reveal complex textural sequences and 3-D measurements of minerals and quick semi-quantitative analysis.Common analytical methods include Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) and Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) (commonly with XRF and ICP) for major and trace elements. The EMPA analyses of industrial minerals provide information on the purity of the analyzed grains as opposed to the bulk chemical analyses that may be misleading due to contamination by other associated common “gangue” minerals. These techniques have been implemented for the case studies of wollastonite, V-magnetite and muscovite. Therefore, these methods can provide extremely useful information and lead to the implementation of a successful pilot-testing programme.MINERALOGICAL EVALUATION OF DEPOSITSDespite their considerable and increasing economic importance, industrial mineral deposits have traditionally been neglected by economic geologists, and are only rarely the subject of the detailed analysis widely lavished on metallic mineralization. Moreover, in that they generally represent concentrations of “normal” rock-forming minerals, albeit commonly with particular textural and/or geochemical features, they have tended to fall between the mainstream of petrogenetic studies and mineral deposit research (Grammatikopoulos 1999). For many industrial minerals, little attention has been paid to the factors responsible for their local concentration as large and high-grade bodies. This comparative neglect has particularly been the case for minerals such as talc and wollastonite, widespread in metamorphic rocks, in which they are reasonably interpreted as components of assemblages derived, respectively, from pelitic sediments, ultramafic igneous rocks and siliceous limestones."

This paper summarises work undertaken to date as part of an investigation into the mineral resources of the proposedNorth West South Island National Park. The area covered by the proposed national park is underlain by many rock types that have undergone a long and complex history of evolution which has endowed it with some of the best potential for a wide range of different minerals in New Zealand. Many of these minerals occur only in this area or in Fiordland National Park.   The first gold-rush in the area occurred in 1856 and followed the discovery of payable gold at Lightbands Gully, south of Collingwood. The miners first focused on the alluvial deposits but soon shifted attention to lode potential. The total historical gold production for the area may be over 400 000 oz (NZ$250 - NZ$295.6 M at 1993 prices).   In addition to gold, a wide range of other minerals have been reported from the area including molybdenum, copper, nickel, zinc, silver, bismuth, stibnite, lead and antimony. The Onekaka iron-ore deposits have produced small tonnages of ochre and iron-ore at various times. Tungsten, platinoids and other metals have been. given only minor attention. The diverse geology of the Northwest Nelson has resulted in the occurrence of many industrial minerals which have been exploited in generally small-scale operations. Aggregate, chrysotile asbestos, clay, dolomite, marble, limestone, dimension stone, rip-rap, talc-magnesite and wollastonite have all been produced.

The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.
