Yucca Mountain Overview The U.S. Department of Energy?s Yucca Mountain Project is a geologic repository project designed to receive, handle, package, transport, and emplace spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. The planned repository would be located in Yucca Mountain on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and would include both surface and subsurface areas. Yucca Mountain rock formations consist of successive layers of volcanic rocks (called tuffs) approximately 14 to 11.5 million years old, formed by eruptions of volcanic calderas to the north. With the volcanic rock the potential for methane emission is not an issue and the subsurface repository is a non-gassy (methane) classification. This paper will provide a summary of the development ventilation system design that provides fresh air for subsurface construction activities, and the emplacement ventilation system design that removes heat generated by the waste packages. The subsurface layout, illustrated in Figure 1, contains 108 emplacement drifts, one Performance Confirmation(PC) observation drift, nine intake/exhaust shafts, and three access ramps. The existing Yucca Mountain facilities, shown in bold lines in Figure 1, include a 7.8 km long, 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter U shaped tunnel that is formed by the North and South Ramps at both ends of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) drift and a 1.5 km long, 5.0 m (16.4 ft) diameter Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block drift (ECRB) that were constructed from 1994 through 1998. These drifts were used for site characterization activities and have been incorporated into the subsurface repository configuration. The unexcavated perimeter access main and exhaust main drifts are typically 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter TBM excavations and the emplacement drifts are 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM excavations. The turnouts leading into the emplacement drifts are to be excavated by either mechanical, or drill and blast methods and serve as the launch chambers for the emplacement drift TBM excavations.

In a lagging economy where profits are tight, businesses cut costs. No revelation there. The mining industry, though, has always looked for ways to reduce production costs — no matter the state of the economy or commodity prices. The fact is, when planning a new mine or the expansion of an existing one, mining companies gamble that commodity prices will be reasonably high when a project comes onstream. It takes millions of dollars and several years to bring a mine into operation. And a lot can happen economically between the time management gives the go-ahead for a new project and its completion.

The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible. Laboratory scale equipment was developed to recover zinc as oxide fume from granulated lead blast furnace slag. The cyclone furnace process is characterised by high treatment rates combined with continuous and independent operation.Results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant pilot plant scale trials being undertaken.INTRODUCTIONSince granulation of lead blast furnace slag started at Port Pirie in 1921 the stockpile of this material has increased to nearly 5 million tons which averages 17·5 per cent zinc by weight. Although a number of processes for recovering the zinc have been examined, economic considerations indicate that a slag fuming process is likely to be most suitable.In the conventional slag fuming process zinc is extracted by injecting pulverized coal and air into a molten slag bath. By maintaining a suitable air to coal ratio the oxidised zinc contained in the slag is reduced to metal. Volatilization of the zinc is followed by reoxidation in the gaseous phase with the addition of further air above the bath. The zinc oxide fume so produced is collected by normal gas cleaning methods.By examination of the thermodynamics of this process Bell, Turner, and Peters (1955) determined the zinc oxide activity of the slag over the duration of the fuming cycle.A combination of high temperature and high carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide ratio was found necessary for rapid zinc elimination.Since melting of the slag is an essential step in the slag fuming process, only two treatment methods appeared possible at Port Pirie until recently...

The unit agreement for the Wertz Dome field, Wyoming, was approved by the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior on November 4, 1937, effective on December 1, 1937. The stated objectives of the agreement are to conserve and put to beneficial use all oil and gas produced; to make possible a uniform withdrawal of oil and gas in order to maintain equalized reservoir pressures; to provide for an orderly determination of the structural features of the productive horizons; and to permit the injection of gas for pressure maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to show by a discussion of the problems involved and the engineering practices employed by the unit operator, how well the objectives of the unit agreement have been accomplished in the development and production of oil and gas from the field. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT The Wertz Dome oil and gas field is located 88 miles southwest of Casper and 38 miles north and westerly from Rawlins, Wyoming. It is served by a state secondary oiled road connecting with U. S. Highway No. 220 at Lamont, a distance of 3 miles from the field. It has been a producing field for 27 years, first as an important producer of gas and more recently of oil. The Producers and Refiners Corp. completed Well No. 1, NE1/4SW1/4 sec. 7, T. 26 N., R. 89 W., the first productive well in the field, in September. 1921, in the Muddy sandstone of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 3435 feet for an initial production of 42,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. In 1922 pipe lines were laid to Casper, Wyoming, for supplying fuel to the Standard of Indiana refinery, 'the adjoining town of Mills. and the Producers and Refiners Corp. pump station No. 6 in Mills; and to Parco (now Sinclair), Wyoming, for supplying that refinery with fuel. The gasoline content of the gas was extracted in an absorption plant located near the town of Mills. No compressors were used as the line pressure was sufficiently high to flow the gas through the absorbers. As high as 30,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day were treated in the plant extracting 6000 gallons of gasoline. In September 1937, the pipe line was discontinued and the plant was dismantled at which time 61,000,000,000 cu. ft. of gas had been produced from the seven Muddy, Cloverly, and Sundance gas wells drilled in the field. Of this volume of gas 800,000,000 cu. ft. were produced from the Frontier formation, 34,200,000,000 cu. ft. from the Muddy sandstone, 24,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Cloverly, locally called Dakota, and 2,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Sundance formation. The pipe line was discontinued because of the near depletion of the gas reserves in Wertz and nearby fields, and hecause of the local field requirements demanding the retention of the remaining gas reserves. In December 1936, the Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. completed Well No. 10, SE1/4NW1/4 sec. 7. T. 26 N., R. 89 W., at a depth of 5886 feet. as the first Tensleep sand producer with an intial of 1700 barrels of oil per day. The well was originally drilled only 14 feet into the sand and in August 1939 was deepened to a depth of 6161 feet, 289 feet in the sand, and the daily produe tion increased to 8350 barrels of oil. In February 1948 Well No. 22, SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 1. T. 26 N., R. 90 W., was deepened from the Tensleep to the Basal Amsden sand and completed at a depth of 6635 feet for an intial of 600 barrels of oil per day in the Basal Amsden. In April 1948, Well No. 2. SW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N., R. 90 W.. was deepened from the Tensleep to the Madison limestone and was completed at a depth of 7193 feet for an intial of 1145 barrels of oil per day in the Madison. Well No. 26, SE1/4SE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N.. R. 90 W., was deepened from the Ten-sleep to the Cambrian and in October 1948 it was completed in the Cambrian for an intial of 277 barrels of oil per day. GEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVE ACREAGE The surface is Steele shale of Upper Cretaceous age, covered in part by gravel beds. If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

The importance of the Broken Hill mining field may be gauged from the fact that since the discovery of the ore-body in 1883, till the end of 1931, approximately 43,000,000 tons of ore have been raised.The lode covers a length of 31 miles, and in places is upwards of 300 ft. in width. The ore, as at present mined, consists of an intimately blended mixture of lead and zinc sulphides with silver and gangue minerals.Structurally the lode conveys the impression of a huge longitudinal arch (when viewed from the east or west), having its apex or crown near the centre of the field, in the leases of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., where the lode outcropped at the surface.The minimum depth of the lode in the Proprietary mine was some 500 ft. from the surface, but huge undulations, having an average pitch of 45°, carry the extensions of the arch gradually deeper, to those places where active stoping operations are now in progress in the workings of the North mine at one extremity, and the South and Zinc Corporation mines at the other. The depth of the lode from the surface, as exposed at present, is approximately 1700 ft. at these extremities.The structure and physical character of the ore-body, and its containing walls, are so complex and varied that almost every type of mining problem is met with.

O tratamento termomecânico a elas conferido é importante para atingir as propriedades desejadas. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da conformação mecânica nas propriedades da liga Ti42Nb forjada a frio com 80% de encruamento e seguido de envelhecimento. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, medidas de dureza, metalografia e microscopia das superfícies de fratura. Foi possível observar que a liga Ti42Nb apresentou maior dureza e consequentemente maior resistência após o envelhecimento.

Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria's future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

The resulting effects of this slide were thousands of ounces of gold that were now deferred and an unstable wall above which made mining the slough material unsafe.

In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. A flux-gate magnetometer senses the earth's magnetic field and provides the means for determining the orientation of the log. A motor rotates the transducer and mag-

The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. When properly selected, applied, maintained and monitored, a biodegradable fluid will have a long useful life and will protect equipment as well as or better than conventional petroleum based hydraulic fluids.

The Merensky Reef zone, as developed on Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg Operations, displays a gradational mineralized zone, with grades decreasing from the Merensky Pegmatoid Unit into the footwall and hanging wall. A system of identifying a manageable method of defining the mining cut is introduced, termed the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade. Although horizontal grade selectivity is not applied in the mining of the Merensky Reef zone, low extraction of the orebody, due to manageable and non-manageable factors, can contribute to a reduction in revenue, even losses, due to fixed cost contributions in the mining and beneficiation of the ore. A model is proposed that integrates all variables affecting the revenue of the mining operation, including the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade, the extraction factors, commodity prices and exchange rates, utilizing numerical simulation techniques in a PC-based environment. A breakeven extraction factor for a specific cut-off grade is delivered for a range of market conditions. The breakeven extraction factor is a useful guide when designing mining layouts in structurally complex and low metal content areas. Incorporating distribution functions for individual commodity prices and exchange rates into the model provides mineral resource managers with a risk profile for individual mining areas. Shaft areas have varying grade profiles and each area should have individual models run, to prevent generalizations being made about acceptable risk levels on mining areas.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. INTRODUCTION This paper was originally presented at the Platinum Adding Value Conference, held at Sun City from the 4th to 6th October 2004. Narrow reef mining may not be applicable to the base metal operations in Zambia, however, it is considered that the methodology used is equally appropriate to the development of technology and mining methods in mining environments other than narrow reef mining. The purpose of this paper is to explore the integration of technology and stoping systems. For the last hundred years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour intensive industry. It is only through the application of appropriate technology that change will occur. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology that is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a different technology that results in a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping in narrow reef mining, over the last 100 years, can be categorised as follows: ? The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century. The cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter, hand held units that were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg. (The so called Swedish method of mining.) As late as the early 1970s some drilling was still being carried out without the assistance of an air leg. ? Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s. ? Hydraulic props installed close to the face and capable of applying force against the hangingwall as well as yielding in a controlled manner under dynamic load arrived in the 1960s. In many instances these have now been replaced by yielding elongates fitted with water hydraulic tensioning devices. ? Some people argue that the introduction of tungsten carbide inserts, to improve drilling, was equally important.
