Newmont Mining has a large, integrated gold-mining operation in northern Nevada with several mines, stockpiles and processing facilities. There are more than 90 defined metallurgical ore types and more than 60 defined gold-recovery process options. Newmont developed a mine plan and process model to take better advantage of the available synergies at its Nevada mines. This plan includes a mixed integer and linear programming optimization tool. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada planning group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. These changes have allowed a reduction in mine engineering staff and have increased the effectiveness of mine planning.

In this case study we compare the sampling quality of diamond drilling (DD) and reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the high sulfidation Purnama gold–silver (Au-Ag) deposit located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.There was a systematic bias of 23 per cent gold metal under-call in the diamond drilling based Ore Reserve estimate compared to the mill reconciliation over three years of production. The RC based Grade Control data and mill production data were in much closer accord. Investigation led to quantification of the significantly reduced sampling imprecision (or improved precision) of RC drilling samples relative to diamond drilling samples and the determination of a grade bias between the drill types caused by sample volume and metal distribution in the mineralisation. An infill RC drilling program was undertaken to improve data density across the pit for inclusion in the Mineral Resource estimate. This subsequently increased Au metal in the estimate by 16 per cent.The sampling imprecision of primary diamond drill sampling is rarely tested. Duplicate sampling can be used to quantify sampling imprecision at each stage of subsampling. In diamond drilling it is tested at the primary sampling stage via second half core sampling, while RC sampling is tested with field duplicate sampling at the rig. Duplicate data can be compared in a number of ways to determine imprecision including Thompson-Howarth plots which quantify imprecision to allow comparison between different methods and protocols. Comparing sampling imprecision between data sets and data types allows determination of optimum drilling and sampling protocols and can reflect upon the underlying validity of Mineral Resource input data and estimation outputs.CITATION:Sims, D A, Pocoe, J, Kasnanto, A N and Pulungan, B, 2017. The objectives of this investigation were to develop a laboratory procedure in which core discing could be produced under known (and variable) stress conditions, and to study the discing characteristics of several fypes of rock. Discing of rock cores refers to the formation of discs or wafers of relatively uniform thickness which fracture or rupture on surfaces approximately *Fracture is a type of failure in which there is a complete loss of cohesion and fresh surfaces are created. Rupture is a type of failure in which there Is only a partial loss of cohesion. normal to the axis to the core (see Fig. 1). Usually the surfaces of the discs are concave-convex with the concave side toward the collar of the hole. The surface of the fractured discs are like those created by a tension failure (or possibly a shear failure with virtually no normal compressive stress). This phenomenon has been observed by a number of investigators1-5 in the course of diamond drilling in underground mines, especially in areas suspected of being under high stress. The state of stress in the core required to produce discing is not exactly known. Tranter and craggs6 theoretically investigated the stress distribution in an infinite cylinder, subjected to hydrostatic pressure, minus p, from z = 0 to z = 8 and unloaded from z = 0 to z = 8, Fig. 2. The exact solution to this problem shows that a tensile stress develops in the loaded region near z = 0 with the greatest tensile stress on the axis of the cylinder. A tensile stress also developed on the surface of the cylinder at a point just outside of the loaded zone. Jaeger and Cook3 experimentally investigated the discing mechanism by biaxially loading cores in a pressure jacket sealed at the ends by O-rings. According to the Tranter and Craggs theory it would be expected that failure should occur at the pressure discontinuity at the O-rings. The experimental results showed that if the specimen was unjacketed it broke at random points within the pressurized zone and at a pressure somewhat greater than the tensile strength of the specimen, presumably due to the development of a

There was little change in the mineral industry of Benin in 1986, as the economy remained in the grip of a regional recession exacerbated by failing oil prices, which nullified much of the income from Benin's oil production. Benin's industrial sector accounted for less than 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP), with the mineral industry providing about one-half of that total. Several major projects initiated over the last several years continued to perform and/or progress below Government expectations. These included the Save sugar refinery, the Dassa-Parakou section of the Dassa-Cotonou highway, the Benin-Togo Nangbeto hydroelectric plant, the Onigbolo cement plant, and the Semé Oilfield. Funding for these projects is the major source of the Beninese external debt, which was estimated to be over $800 million.2

Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. "The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Piloting Moly for any lower tonnage would reduce the accuracy of the testwork.Thus a need exists to collect operating data in order to establish the existence of process relationships that could be used for feasibility and design purposes.The object of this paper is to expose a preliminary relationship that could be used for the purposes described above and to apply the findings to a preliminary design of a moly cleaning circuit flowsheet."

Two drilled shaft foundations were subjected to axial load tests in order to measure the influence of drilling fluid on performance. Other than the differing drilling fluids, the shafts were constructed with great care to ensure identical conditions. The results indicate superior performance in both side shear and base resistance of the shaft constructed using a polymer over that of the shaft constructed using bentonite drilling slurry.

The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. The effects of concentration of cobalt solution and urea, agitation, on precipitation morphology were investigated experimentally. Generally in closed systems the particles are identified as cobalt (II) basic carbonate with needle type shape. In open system, spherical and plate-like precipitations of cobalt (II) basic cyanate are formed. The chemical formula of cobalt compounds was confirmed. They are CoII,III(OH)0.83(CO3)0.49 Ay?0.14 H2O (in tightly-capped reactor: A stands for NO3?, Cl?; y[A]molecular weight < 12.9) and CoII,III(OH)0.83(NCO)XAy?0.14 H2O. (in open reactor A stands for: NO3?, Cl?; 42 x + y[A]molecular weight < 44.82). The main reason was that the primary particles had different chemical compositions for the effects of the different kinds of anions and stoichio-chemical compositions of the primary particles. The effect degree of the anions depended on the co-existing anion radius in the reaction solution. According DTA-TG analysis of the cobalt compounds, the latter particles transform to Co3O4 powders on calcining. The shape of the Co3O4 particle with porous character has inheritance with precipitation. In this paper, it concludes that the particle formed by the principle of nucleation-aggregation in aqueous solution. The process of aggregation has played an important role in formation of particles. During calcination, the aggregation would be destroyed partly.

THE mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.-a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included.

The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.
