UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. Orebodies are defined in economic terms in that they must satisfy conditions determined by costs of mining, extraction and marketing before being so described. Despite this they have an essential chemical character as specialized products resulting from geochemical differentiation, and it is surprising that so little basic geochemical research has been carried out with respect to ore occurrence and that prospecting methods based on geochemical principles are not more widely applied.Many exploration geologists associate geochemistry with analytical techniques applied to the detection of dispersed traces of metals from actual orebodies. Geochemical research, applied to economic geology, goes far beyond this limited field and the purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects of such research and its use in formulating exploration principles.THE GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND TO MINERAL OCCURRENCE AND EXPLORATIONThe three aspects of economic mineral deposits to which geochemical research can be of use in determining ore guides are genesis, control of deposition and mode of dispersion from orebodies after emplacement. Fragmentation analysis of blast or crushed rock material is a time-consuming and costly process. During the last two decades, the mining industry has been investigating image-based analysis systems as an alternative to generate fragmentation results. Many image-based techniques and commercial products have emerged during the last few years, and the mining industry has recently begun using these tools for real-time estimation of size distributions. Some existing systems require manual image editing to add or delete edges (or net) before executing the fragmentation analysis routine. This manual procedure may take hours of time for each image analyzed. Reliable and robust image segmentation should be able to handle a wide range of rock textures and sizes under a variety of lighting conditions. This paper describes a novel software application, which has the capability to autonomously capture images and analyze them to generate the particle size distribution. The system can also process a batch of images captured during a fixed duration of time and produce the overall particle size distribution. The new method has different layers of segmentation modules, which allows the system to operate under a wide range of rock textures and lighting conditions. A new grey-level slicing technique is developed which can perform under a range of illuminating conditions. The Canny-based edge detection technique is used to segment rocks appearing in dark regions.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east bank of Lingding Ocean. Its coastline is about 6 km long and the water depth near the shore is Favourable. Across the bay is the ' New Territories " of Hong Kong. The port is at a distance of 22-23 seamilesaway from center of Hong Kong and 80 seamiles to Huangpu Harbour of Guangzhou, its highway links with Shen-Guang Highay. Since 19 79 China Merchants Group of the Transportation Department, began to set up Shekou Industrial Zone, the port has been developing and flouri­shing in business. With 15 large or small berths in all, the present portline is 2600 m, and the annual cargo throughout is over 3,000,000 tons and the annual passenger traffic is about 2,000,000 persons. Equalling a medium-scale seaport, it has been officially approved as an oceangoing transit port by the ministry of Transportation. The construction of Shekou port is chara-terized by the self-collected funds and the short construction period. In view of this, the optional plan of the port structure must serve the requirements of simplicity in struture, economy in mate­rial and speed in construction. That accounts for the most application of the sheet piling type to the port in Shekou. Once the project was approved, the cons­truction started. Only within an average period of 7-8 months, a deep water pier was completed and put into operation, which covered series of processes from exploration, designing, tender for con­struction to completion.

In current practice, pile foundation design is based on a general under-standing of pile-soil interaction during installation and superstructure-pile-soil interaction after construction. The pile design is a reflection of experience, precedent and judgment for normal piling practice of working load capacities up to approximately 100 tons with corresponding ultimate capacities up to 200 tons. For higher capacity piles, pile design is even less predictable. In particular, the feasibility of pile installation is an important design consideration that must be given the proper attention. An installation capability that is not given the required emphasis can cause unnecessary problems.

The performance of the V-Day Mine near Danville, Illinois has been evaluated from data extending over about a 20 year period. The area included in this study involves over 16 acres. Essentially this entire area has progressively subsided. Extensive data has been collected on the geologic and mining conditions, the subsidence movements, as well as on the response of the surface structures to the subsidence. In this paper a detailed summary of the site conditions is given, and the mechanics of progressive failure of the studied room and pillar mine is postulated. These progressive long-term failures of the V-Day are then compared to other similar mine failures in Illinois. Some overall, but tentative, long-term strength evaluations are presented as well.

The town of Greenwich, CT, an exclusive suburb of New York City awarded several contracts for the installation of sanitary sewer in the North Mianus section of town. The Valley Road section was the most challenging from a rock excavation standpoint. The cut was up to 14 ft (4.25m), with adjacent utilities [20 in. (500mm) water, 6 in. (150mm) water and 8 in. (200mm) gas] located to within 5 ft. (1.5m) of the proposed sewer trench. Rock types varied but were ultra metamorphic in nature, ranging from quartzites, granite gneiss and various types of migmatities.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

A paper presenting an overview of legislative and best practice approaches to the management of OHS&E and business risk for Australian tunnelling operations. Best practice can be achieved in Australian tunnelling through ærisk awarenessÆ by decision-makers and line personnel. This will identify problems before they occur and lead to implementing controls appropriate to avoiding loss throughout the life cycle of the underground opening. The author draws on legislative approaches from all Australian states together with practical experience from risk management and risk engineering work from six recent tunnelling projects. This describes a process that:commences with concept risk assessment,involves quantification of major hazards,conducts assessments of operating risks, andleads to implementation of an integrated management system that keeps construction activities connected with the controls identified in the design and planning phases and minimises the losses sustained as a result. Xstrata?s Lion Project is underway, with commissioning expected in the third quarter of 2006. The new smelter will utilize Xstrata?s patented Premus process, and the competitiveness of the Premus process is discussed.

"Basement construction is one of the challenging geotechnical concerns in the urban environment. Several types of retention systems are practiced to support the earth which is suitable for restricted access, rapid mobilization, fast excavation and cost-effective designs. A thorough understanding of geotechnical engineering as well as the structural mechanics is important for the earth retention systems. This paper discusses a project with various types of foundation solutions including monitoring of deflections during excavation stage of a retention system.A multi storeyed residential building (3B+Stilt+18F) in Chennai having structure foot print area of 1500 m2 has to be constructed on large diameter pile foundations and also to support the proposed basement excavation. Ground water table was encountered at about 6m below the existing ground level (EGL). In order to support heavy structural loads, large diameter bored cast-in-situ piles were chosen and installed. Further, complete retention system was economically designed and built, which includes installation of Contiguous Bored Piles (CBP) in combination of vertical grout columns behind CBP wall to seal the gap between the CB Piles, installation of inclined ground anchors, construction of capping beam, stressing and locking of installed ground anchors. A detailed monitoring program was in place and continuous monitoring of wall deflections is being measured at the time of publishing this paper. This paper describes the design and construction aspects adopted for foundation and retention system including the monitoring results during excavation stage of the project.INTRODUCTIONIn general, stage wise open excavation will be opted for basement construction where plenty of space is available. Due to urbanization and restricted space, open excavation became a difficult task nowadays. To overcome this problem, suitable retention system need to be selected to retain the soil mass. Selection of suitable retention system for multi-level basement excavation is a great challenge in geotechnical industry, especially when the proposed site is located within the minimum set back distance from the existing structures. This in turn calls for the advanced and innovative methods of retention system.Several earth retention systems such as Diaphragm Walls, Secant Pile Walls, CBP system, Soldier Pile Walls, Sheet Piles, Deep Soil Mixing (block walls) etc. with or without inclined ground anchors are being practiced worldwide. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of the available retention systems in practice locally and keeping in view of present site conditions, the developer has chosen CBP system with inclined ground anchors so that all foundation related works of the project will be handled in a single package. The main advantage of such packaged solution will ease the coordination between design consultants and foundation contractor resulting in faster construction of foundation works which in turn reflect savings in time and cost."

The gas-dynamic method is presented of calculation of explosion-proof distances during an explosion of the methane-air mixture in mine working. On the basis of this method is modelled of shock waves interaction with explosion protective parachute partitions, obstructions and water barriers. Calculations have been carried out of attenuation factors of shock waves during their interaction with explosion protective structures, arranged near conjugation zones of mine workings. Possibilities have been analysed of suppression of intensity of shock waves and of propagation of shock waves control in mine working network of coal mines by installation of explosion protective structures.

The 5-mile long Bay Tunnel is a major water supply facility to be constructed under the San Francisco Bay and adjacent marshlands between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward Fault to the east. The tunnel will have a two-pass lining system consisting of a watertight precast concrete segmental initial lining and a welded steel pipe final lining. Considering the Bay Tunnel?s location between two major active faults, the design earthquake produces a significant peak ground acceleration estimated at approximately 0.6g. To develop a design that can achieve the seismic performance objectives, full dynamic seismic analyses were performed using site-specific earthquake time histories. The analyses considered soil-structure interaction and an evaluation of the transverse and longitudinal effects of the design earthquake. This paper describes the seismic analyses and the design measures recommended to minimize potential adverse effects of the design earthquake on the tunnel final lining.

The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for three underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.03 to 3.09 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of December 6, 1974, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1974, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1975 indexes Initial capital investment ranges from $26,498,500 for the 1.03- million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $67,173,300 for the 3.09-MM-tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $37,437,500 to $92,984,300 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $14.83 to $13.26 per ton, assuming a 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.
