Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.

The construction of Phase 2 of Hong Kong Station, its retail podium and International Finance Centre Two, the tallest building in Hong Kong, will be completed in the middle of 2003. This paper describes the design and construction of the slurry wall for the Station (both Phase 1 and Phase 2) and the two commercial buildings at the Station. The slurry wall is used as the permanent earth support wall for the station box and the excavation depth ranges from 70 feet to 120 feet. Top-down construction technique was adopted to support the excavation of the station, while circular cofferdams relying on hoop stiffness were constructed to support the basement excavation of the two towers. The designed behavior of the slurry wall is also compared to the as built behavior.

The following notes apply more especially to the purchase of silverlead ores produced in the neighbourhood of Zeehan and Dundas; for it is this class of ore that is principally mined in those parts, and which creates competition among the ore buyers.In the early days of this field, most of the ore passed through the hands of the first buyer who had sufficient enterprise to establish himself at Zeehan but in more recent times, competition has been so keen that there are generally three or four buyers tendering. lf the output was large this would not matter so much from the buyers' point of view but when we consider that the output of the field is only some 1,650 tons per month, and that of this 70 odd tons are produced by the Western and Montana mines, aud being sent home for realization, is withdrawn from local purchasers, there is really not enough for four buyers, especially at the present exorbitant prices they pay the miners.Some of the mines have a fixed sampling day, on which it is tacitly understood that the ore buyers will attend. Others, such as Grubb's Silver Mining Oompany, No-Liability, send round a printed reminder, stating the quantity of ore, and the date of sampling.

The action of water on a number of Queensland shales which are associated with particular coal measures and oil shales has been studied. The results suggest that the disintegration of some of the shales could cause significant problems in mining and preparation operations. The extent of shale breakdown varies widely from deposit to deposit and from seam to seam but a suitable assessment procedure utilises the test described in AS 1661-1979, and an improved method of presenting the results is described in the paper.

Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment, and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. But this efficiency also comes at a cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impacts of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to proper use of results in mine design. ONE year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a- contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. In some places where the original rivets were missing, the holes were filled by welding; patch plates were also added at certain badly worn spots. General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

A certain amount of "give and take" must be adopted in the treatment of small local cavities and mounds.In all cases it is desirable that the surveys made should be tied on to the lease surveys for the purpose of location, and that all levels should be reduced to the mine datum. It is also desirable to obtain levels of the original surface before deposition of the material to be estimated. If these have not been obtained beforehand, levels and transfers round the top will be the next best. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. Interest in those physical properties of minerals which might be used to good effect in prospecting is not new. Early in the nineteenth century attempts were made in th'e Cornish mines to measure the natural electric potentials set up by chemical changes proceeding in the lodes. The distortion of the earth's magnetic field by bodies of strongly magnetic iron ore received early recognition in Sweden. Treasure-finders, working on the principle of electrical induction, appear to have been invented about eighty years ago, though were probably not then applied to mineral exploration. By the end of the nineteenth century Eotvos, a Hungarian physicist, had constructed a highly sensitive type of torsion balance capable of measuring the minute distortions in the earth's field of gravitation resulting from variations in the density of the materials composing the crust. During the first decade of this century he demonstrated its value in tracing rock-salt deposits in virtue of their low density compared with the surrounding rocks. Geophysical prospecting began to be recognised as having a very definite value and its development gathered momentum. Its great expansion took place after the 1914-18 war, when its value in oil exploration was amply demonstrated, and this expansion has continued to the present time and shows no signs of abating.Divisions of Applied Geophysics.The four main divisions of applied geophysics are electrical, magnetic gravitational and seismic. With the importance of ores of radio-active metals, one might add to these a radio-active division. The first two are more important to the field of mining, but techniques based on gravitational attraction have their uses in particular cases. Seismic methods are not generally suited to the exploration of metallic ores, but have proved of enormous value in the search for petroleum. With vast quantities of oil as the prize, more money has been lavished on the deve10pment and practice of these methods than on all the others put together.Geophysical Prospecting Methods.Geophysical prospecting methods may be used to detect a mineral deposit directly in virtue of differences in the intensity of some physical attribute common to it and the enclosing country rock. Examples of this are the detection of rock-salt by gravity measurements, or of iron ore by magnetic methods. Of much wider application, however, is the indireot approach in which the aim is to determine, by geophysical means, the geological structures controlling the disposition of mineral deposits. These structures may be partly known from geological work, in which case geophysical methods are useful adjuncts. Where, because of an 'unbroken cover of overburden, no useful geological information presents itself, scout drilling or geophysical prospecting are the only alternatives. Overburden is here intended to mean any covering material not, involved in the structures controlling the mineral deposits. Prospecting for petroleum amounts to the detecting of favourable reservoir structures, and as the chief types of such are the same the world over...

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

OWING to the gradual depletion of the hitherto plentiful supply of firewood in the immediate vieinity of Queenstown and Gormanston, which caused a steady increase in the cost of fuel for domestic purposes, the Mount Lyell Company took steps several years ago to make available as a substitute electric current from its Lake Margaret hydro-electric supply. In order to make this practicable it was necessary that the cost of electric power for heating purposes should compare favourably with the cost, of fuel, and the installation of domestic appliances brought within reach of the average householder, and efforts have been continuously directed towards this end since the year 1928.WATER HEATERSThe installation of electrical apparatus in local dwellings began with hot-water services, the heating elements being the types then procurable on the market and adapted to meet requirements.These, however, did not prove satisfactory, but the study of their bilure resulted in a type being developed locally which has overcome all difficulties. The first type of water heater evolved was an outside circulation one the element of which consisted of an iron pipe through which the water passed, insulated with micanite and wound with nichrome wire, the latter being covered with alundun cement to keep it in position and prevent oxidation. This was insulated on its outside surface with a layer of asbestos flour, and connected to the hot-water container as shown in Fig. 1. It was found, however, that the iron pipe had a short life, due to a certain amount of acidity in the water, and a copper pipe was substituted which proved very durable. Some heaters with this improved type of element are still operating after six years of use. The resistance wire is run at a very low current density, which ensures durability.

The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing. INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

High-production methods like longwall mining with hydraulic powered supports are necessary to increase underground coal production in India. Longwall mining had a mixed success record for Indian geo-mining conditions. In this paper, an analysis is presented to optimally design an array of chain pillars in multi-seam longwall mining panels in the deepest coal mine in India. The study found that a chain pillar of 80-m width and 195-m length is necessary for long-term stability without any reinforcement. It was also observed that an optimum chain pillar can be designed by providing suitable side reinforcement (side bolting) which will reduce the chain pillar dimensions to 55-m width and 160-m length. Optimum design of chain pillars will reduce the coal locked up in these chain pillars by ~ 77%. This will also reduce the gestation period of longwall mining panel development. This paper also evaluates the maximum tensile subsidence strain induced at the surface and finds that the values are within the safe working limit of 3 mm/m. Thus, this paper finds direct application in the design of future multi-seam retreating longwall mining panels in Indian geo-mining conditions.

The Bright water Conveyance System includes 21 km of tunnels mined by two earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and two slurry TBMs. The probabilistic baseline approach defined in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) can representatively be verified by use of a comprehensive tracking system to identify face conditions that allows comparison with the baselines. The glacial geology includes a high lateral variation in soil types that, when combined with the pressurized face tunneling methods, creates challenges for documenting face conditions. Baseline tracking using spoil samples and TBM operational parameters provides information to document actual conditions and support resolution of differing site condition claims.

"The metallurgical performance of the column flotation process is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a model-based automatic control strategy using froth depth and bias measurements obtained from virtual sensors developed at Laval University. Preliminary pilot plant results on two-phase (water– air) and three-phase system (water – minerals – air) will be presented and eventual industrial implementation of such a strategy as well as the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns have been widely studied and used in mineral processing for about twenty years. Although a great deal of work has been accomplished to understand the influence of different variables such as froth depth (H), bubble surface area flux (Sb) and bias (Jb) on the metallurgical performance, the measurement of some of these variables is still difficult to be performed – except at the laboratory level – because in most cases, no commercial device yet exists.As a result of this, it is almost impossible to achieve neither efficient control nor optimization of the process at the industrial level, even in open-loop operation. This paper aims at presenting a simple control strategy of froth depth and bias. Description of the sensors used to achieved measurements, preliminary pilot plant results for froth depth control, eventual industrial applications and possibilities for process optimization are also treated."
