HAPPY BIRTHDAY Not only is 1971 the Centennial Year of the AIME, but it also marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the United States Portland Cement Industry. On September 26th in 1871 David O. Saylor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, received his patent Numbered 119,413 for the manufacture of portland cement. "Cement" had been used in the United States before that. This was, however, natural cement - a direct product of rocks as found in nature, usually burned at low temperatures in open kilns. During the early 1800s this natural cement played an important role in such projects as the building of the Erie Canal. It was only after the Civil War that small amounts of high priced portland cement was imported from Europe. The successful use of this material in construction led to Saylor's experiments and subsequent patent for the manufacture of a scientifically controlled product in this country. These one hundred years have witnessed four major "ages" of cement . . . three of them occurring in the last quarter century since World War Two. The first age was the "Age of Development", a seventy-year period which saw the growth of cement and its concrete end uses as major construction materials. Next followed a period called the "Age of Demand" when, after the war, cement became in short supply relative to large building requirements. In effect a cement shortage existed. The decade of the Sixties proved to be the "Age of Reaction", with its courses of action coming in response to the problems that arose when the industry's expansion programs provided too much capacity. Today cement, and the concrete industries, find themselves entering the "Age of Reason". Installation of a Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) provides an economical method for conversion of a Fixed Speed Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill into one with variable speed, qualities. Though capital intensive, the conversion appears to be one of the most cost-effective methods to gain the advantage of critical speed variations for variable ore characteristics. Expected advantages from the installation of LCI drives at the Goldstrike Mine were decreased liner wear, decreased media consumption and additional grind for increased production rates. These issues as well as construction, economics and performance will be discussed in the presentation. The utilization of the existing equipment came to play an integral part of the study and economic justification of the overall project.

"Since ancient times, storing and conveying water via underground water systems and tunnels has been touted for its strategic advantages. Underground cisterns and tunnels assured protection of essential fresh water supplies from man made contamination and especially from enemies who would gain an advantage by disrupting an adversary’s water supply in a siege. Modern day engineers do not usually specify tunnels for reasons of avoiding deliberate contamination or siege — however, they are just as enamored with the idea of building tunnels for water conveyances.Such was the case for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The SFPUC provides drinking water to 2.6 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The SFPUC’s water system includes 257 km (160 miles) of transmission pipelines and tunnels from the SFPUC’s largest reservoir, the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir inside Yosemite National Park, to San Francisco. About 129 km (80 miles) of the system consist of tunnels. A 30-km (19-mile) section of the tunnel network, called the Mountain Tunnel, was thought to be at risk of a catastrophic failure in its concrete-lined section of 18 km (11 miles). For much of the project planning process, a new replacement tunnel was presumed to be required according to the tunnel planners.Originally constructed between 1917 and 1925, the Mountain Tunnel has been in continuous service since 1925. The 30-km (19-mile) tunnel is located downstream of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir water source in Yosemite National Park, between the Early Intake and Priest Reservoir (Fig. 1). Approximately 18 km (11 miles) of the tunnel is lined with unreinforced concrete. Though the condition of the tunnel was being monitored through water sampling and periodic inspections, there was growing concern that the tunnel lining was at risk of a partial collapse that could interrupt water delivery for up to nine months. The SFPUC was faced with a decision to construct a new bypass tunnel to replace the lined section of the Mountain Tunnel or to rehabilitate the existing tunnel."

The iron ore beneficiation plant at Serra-Azul Mines of ArcelorMittal, Brazil operates at a rated capacity of 3.2 million tons per year. The ore is concentrated using magnetic separation, jigging, hydrocyclones and spiral concentrators. The tailings from the process plant are generated from classifier overflow of 135 tons per hour dry solids and thickener underflow of 48 tons per hour dry solids. A systematic experimental program was carried out using Multi-gravity separator (MGS), and wet high-intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) for recovering the iron values from both of the tailing streams while minimizing the total quantity of tailings to be discarded. The classifier overflow contained 32.3 percent iron, 49.9 percent silica and 2.18 percent alumina and was 45 percent finer than 45 microns in size. The thickener underflow sample contained 47.3 percent iron, 27.6 percent silica and 2.49 percent alumina and was 16 percent finer than 45 microns in size. Separation results on the classifier overflow sample with the MGS indicated that a concentrate containing 62.1 percent of iron, 10.8 percent silica and 0.36 percent alumina can be achieved with a weight recovery of 24.5 percent. The results with WHIMS at 6500 Gauss indicated that concentrate containing 62.6 percent iron, 8.3 percent silica, and 0.65 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 34.7 percent. 4.7 percent. WHIMS studies at 6500 Gauss on thickener underflow sample indicated that a concentrate containing 61.4 percent iron, 8.8 percent silica, and 1.74 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 57.2 percent. Based on these results, and further in-house test works, a WHIMS installation was adopted for the recovery of iron values from the tailings in the operating plant at ArcelorMittal Serra Azul Mines, Brazil.

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."

Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

I have spent my entire life in the mining industry pursuing what I believed was an honorable profession that provided products that were critical for our social and economic well being. Now I am told that all of my efforts been for nothing and that I have been doing something morally wrong - mining. This view of the future is not one that the mining industry has to allow to unfold. A determining factor in how things will turn out is continued improvement of the industry's environmental performance. To some extent, the current state of affairs in the United States is a result of the common perception that greedy corporations (usually foreign) are somehow ripping off US citizens of their native birthright or natural treasures in the name of corporate profits. Implicit in this view is the belief that corporations will take shortcuts or violate the environment in the name of profits. I have 26 years of experience in working in the copper, uranium and gold industries. Profits during those years were meager and difficult to find (Fig. 1). In fact, when I began working fresh out of college, I chose copper, which was then selling at around $1/lb. By the time I left copper mining, it was selling for 45 cents/lb. I then moved to uranium, which was selling for $52/lb. By the time I left it was $16/lb. I finally picked gold, which was then at ($650/oz). There is a whole generation of engineers, geologists and professionals who have spent two decades downsizing, closing mines, improving costs and getting smarter about how the mining industry does what it does. The environment, health and safety are areas where there have been great improvement. There are five characteristics of corporate governance that are critical for a company to develop and an industry to embrace if environmental, health and safety excellence is to reach new heights in the labor pool.

"Native antimony metal is rare and antimony generally occurs together with gold, lead, copper and silver. There are more than 100 antimony minerals, although the sulfide mineral stibnite is the main economic mineral.Antimony enters the supply chain either as a result of mining (primary production) or recycling (secondary production). China has by far the largest antimony resources and is, as a result, the world’s center for antimony mine production. While China remains the leading primary producer, accounting for 69 percent (80.5 kt or 88,700 st) of the global 117.5 kt (129,000 st) in 2017, market consolidation and regulatory inspections across China leading to closures of facilities have caused a significant decrease in Chinese output from 115.8 kt (127,600 st) in 2015 (81 percent of global production).Tajikistan and Russia are the next largest producers of antimony after China, both ramping up production in recent years. Russia could significantly increase its supply of antimony if Polyus moves ahead with supplying 10-12 kt/a (11,000–13,200 stpy) of contained antimony from gold tailings. Australia and Bolivia are also significant mine producers outside China. The value of the different ores varies based on the metal content of the concentrates, with the most valuable gold-bearing ores sourced from Australia’s Costerfield Mine and the least valuable mercury-bearing ores sourced from the Anzob Mine in Tajikistan. On average, Bolivian and Russian ores trade at an intermediate value between those from Costerfield and Anzob. Nearly all of the rest-of-world production is exported to China, where the ores and concentrates are processed into antimony ingots and oxides.Antimony ingot production is not as widespread as is the case with antimony mine production, owing to the high levels of pollution that are associated with antimony smelting. It is for this reason that smelting has been largely confined to China and other Asian countries ,such as Vietnam and Myanmar, where environmental legislation has historically been less stringent. Tajikistan has become a growing producer of antimony ingot since 2014, coming from the commissioned metallurgical plant at the Anzob Mine.Antimony oxide production is undertaken on four continents with China being the biggest producer. There is also a considerable amount of oxide production in Europe (mainly Belgium and France), which relies on imported antimony metal feedstock, mostly from China.A new antimony project under construction by Strategic and Precious Metals Processing (SPMP) in Oman made progress in 2016 and 2017, and after producing first metal in April 2016 in test facilities, was set to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2018. Commissioning had been moved back to June 2018, with a potential ramp-up to 2-3 kt/a (2,200 to 3,300 stpy) of antimony metal by the end of 2018. SPMP is also reviewing producing antimony oxide as part of its flow sheet."

On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer state accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 67 percent of total ball clay production was airfloat, 22 percent was crude or shredded and 11 percent was water-slurried.ConsumptionIn 2013, domestic ball clay producers sold clays to the following markets: ceramic floor and wall tile (44 percent); exports (21 percent); sanitaryware (18 percent); miscellaneous ceramics (9 percent); fillers, extenders, and binders, and unspecified uses (4 percent each), based on 2012 end use patterns and current markets. Other markets accounted for less than 1 percent of the remaining ball clay sales or use. Sales reported for the manufacture of fiberglass or most filler, extender, and binder applications were likely to have been mainly kaolin mined or purchased by the ball clay producers.PricesThe average value of domestically produced ball clay was approximately $47/t ($43/st) in 2013 compared with $46/t ($42/st) in 2012, on the basis of a preliminary survey of domestic ball clay producers. The unit values of exported and imported ball clay were $126/t ($114/ st) and $373/t ($338/st), respectively, in 2013, compared with $62/t ($56/st) and $314/t ($285/st), respectively, in 2012. Unit values for most large export shipments increased in 2013, and a larger number of low-tonnage, high-value export shipments were shipped in 2013 than in 2012, resulting in a doubling of the average export value. Two low-tonnage, high-value shipments in 2013 accounted for the increased value of imports."

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. Refinement of environmental procedures can produce significant cost savings at most mines. Grouting permeable aquifers reduces water pumping and disposal costs. Stable groundwater quality supports reduced groundwater monitoring; and for contaminated groundwater, in-situ or natural restoration should be evaluated. Waste-rock characterization can be minimized using fewer (but more representative) samples, inexpensive surrogate analyses (e.g., NAG instead of humidity cells), and appropriate tests (e.g., avoid meteoric tests on sulfide). Selective waste-rock handling should be compared to random emplacement, which is often cheaper and more stable. Finally, incorporating schedule uncertainty in modeling allows the flexibility to revise mine plans within permits.

During the past decade, considerable effort has been made to develop improved flotation strategies for the sedimentary phosphate resources from Florida, particularly the dolomitic phosphate resources. New flotation equipment and alternate flotation strategies have been evaluated. These developments are reviewed for both traditional siliceous resources and future dolomitic resources. Most process strategies involve variation in the reagent sequence and/or the use of depressants/dispersants. Further research and development efforts in flotation technology are needed to increase flotation plant capacity by elimination of the conventional double float process, to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate, and to achieve the desired selectivity with respect to carbonate minerals, particularly dolomite.

his summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2011 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents [ ] analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2011 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

A safety climate case study was carried out at a surface metal mine where investigators administered the Liberty Mutual Short Scale Safety Climate Survey to 365–368 miners to measure safety climate in consecutive years. Following the baseline safety climate survey in 2019, Foundations for Safety Leadership (FSL) training was conducted with 81 middle to upper management employees at the mine site. Investigators found statistically significant differences in the pre vs. posttraining FSL assessment scores of the middle to upper management employees who attended the training. The follow-up safety climate evaluation was compared to baseline scores and revealed no significant improvement. The overall baseline company safety climate score of 76.38 increased minimally to 76.50 (p-value = 0.616). Investigators also evaluated differences in safety climate between the company’s three major divisions (operations, maintenance, and administration). Both years administration had the highest mean score and operations had the lowest mean score. The authors attributed the statistically significant differences found among the three major divisions to various dissimilarities in their work environments.

Little precise information is available on the effect of mining on the surface topography. It is often assumed that after mining the surface will simply sink. This is not an infallible conclusion as is well illustrated in two of the three examples herein. This paper describes the results of an attempt to precisely measure the surface movement in the area around coal pillars left in place for three oil wells in a completely mined and caved area at the Harwick Mine of the Duquesne Light Company. The dates when the various measurements were made are shown on the data sheets and indicate the rate of surface movement. These oil wells are identified as wells Nos. 2, 3, and 6. This mine property is located on the north side of the Allegheny River at Cheswick, Pennsylvania, and extends in a northerly and westerly direction about five miles. The three well pillars are situated on the westerly side of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad some 2,000 feet from Rural Ridge, Pennsylvania (Fig, 1).

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coal field have a heating value of approximately 8,000 Btu/lb and 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275 to 352'C) of lump coal from Usibelli Coal Mine and Beluga coal field enhanced the heating value of the coal, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 8,000 Btu/lb to nearly 12,000 Btu/lb. The product coal with high heating value and 0.2 % S is an environmentally acceptable premium fuel. The Hardgrove grindability index of the coal is greatly improved, further enhancing its value. Increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Vitrinite reflectance increased to 0.72 and vitrinite was subjected to widespread visiculation resulting in a coke like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

The Pinto Valley concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulfide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/molybdenum circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the molybdenum concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the molybdenum circuit were completed, the final molybdenum concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns were chosen. The column design and construction were done using in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing molybdenum concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high molybdenum tenors and low copper and iron content. The Pinto Valley operations, are comprised of the Pinto Valley concentrator, the Pinto Valley dump leaching and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. The concentrator operated from 1972 to 1998 when mining and milling operations were curtailed for economic reasons. The SX/EW plant continued operations for copper cathode production. After a cessation of mining operations of almost 10 years, Pinto Valley operations began a restart project in January 2007, to bring the mine and the concentrator back into production. Copper concentrate production started in October 2007 after refurbishing and upgrading the facilities with a new DCS system and filter plant. The daily targets of the concentrator were to treat 56.7 kt (62,500 st) of ore, produce 762 t (840 st) of copper concentrate containing 27.5 percent copper at recoveries of 86 percent and produce 2.2 t (2.5 st) of molybdenum concentrate containing more than 80 percent MoS2.

"INTRODUCTION The Shatin to Central Link (SCL) is a new rail line being constructed by the MTR Corporation for the Government of Hong Kong to cater for the growing passenger demand between the North-East New Territories and the urban areas of the city. Contract 1103, which will provide the 4 km of running tunnels between the new Hin Keng and Diamond Hill Stations, was tendered in a design-build framework and awarded to Vinci Construction Grands Projets (VCGP) in October 2012, with Arup as Vinci’s lead designer. One of the most challenging pieces of work on the contract involved the construction of 133m of SEM mined tunnel on the northern end of the project. The Northern Mined Section (NMS) is an undrained, twin-track, single bore profile, broken out through the southern pipe pile wall of the Hin Keng Station cut-and-cover box, Figure 1. The tunnel has maximum excavated dimensions of 14.5m span x 12m height, with track spacing of 6.175m. The general excavation sequence consisted of 3 stages; a 6m high top heading (73.1m2), followed by bench (27.3m2), and invert (26.7m2). A risk-based approach to the design was taken given the large variation in rock level, cover, and an active stream course above tunnel crown. Ultimately, six different temporary support types were utilized in order to optimize the construction process through continually changing ground while maintaining a safe and stable excavation. Three main support types were developed during the initial design phase, along with a “contingency” case, which utilized a partial heading excavation sequence and enhanced face support. The purpose of the contingency support type was to have a robust, engineered design available for immediate implementation should unexpected ground behavior develop, leading to the breaching of instrumentation trigger levels. This support type was never implemented on site. Drill- and-blast tunneling commenced once 6m of rock cover was verified through forward probing. A robust instrumentation and monitoring scheme provided valuable data throughout excavation and the means to carry out a geotechnical back-analysis of the ground behavior and support performance."

Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates. An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The frequency converters are installed in the low voltage switchgear room located below the control room within the primary crushing plant building.
