A continuous pilot-scale test of the GranuFlow Process was conducted using a screen- bowl centrifuge for the dewatering and reconstitution of column flotation concentrate at a coal preparation plant in Virginia. In this test, a slipstream of the fine-clean-coal slurry from the column flotation concentrate was treated with a bitumen emulsion before dewatering. The treated products from the screen-bowl centrifuge appeared to be dry and in a free-flowing granular form, while the untreated products were wet, sticky, and difficult to handle. Specifically, test results indicated that the average moisture contents of the dewatered coal were 35.7, 35.5, 32.6, 29.9, and 26.5 wt% with Orimulsion additions of 0,0.7,3.2,4.8, and 6.4 wt%, respectively. The handleability and dust reduction of the dewatered coal product were also vastly improved.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner's exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau's Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. Introduction This paper attempts to summarize some of the major criticisms of drug testing. Eight problems with drug testing are discussed. These are: • It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know, • It is a distortion of priorities, • Drug use is not known to be associated with increased risk of occupational injuries, • Drug testing is proposed as a dangerously simplistic solution to poorly conceived problems, • In the absence of safeguards, it is unacceptably inaccurate, • In the absence of treatment commitments and confidentiality protection for persons dependent on drugs, it is an unethical practice of medicine, • Drug testing is an invasion of privacy, and • It will have a negative effect on treatment of persons with drug or alcohol dependencies. Employers' need to know It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know. It is reasonable for employers and fellow workers to want to know if workers are functionally impaired (intoxicated) while on the job. Drug testing does not measure impairment. It measures the concentration of drug metabolities in urine or blood. Unlike measurements of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), drug metabolites are not correlated with impairment or intoxication. They indicate only drug use in the one to two weeks before a urine sample. And, in some instances, they indicate chronic use. Impairment caused by drug use, on the other hand, occurs immediately and declines rapidly within hours. Drug metabolites may linger for days afterwards. Drug metabolite concentrations in urine are a function of (Morgan, 1984; Schartz and Hawks, 1985; MMWR, 1983): • the amount and purity of drug consumed before taking the test, • when the drug was consumed, • whether the person was a chronic user, in which case a certain amount of drug metabolites would be stored in body fat and slowly released, • the person's metabolic rate, and • for metabolites in urine, any dilution effects of urine. Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment, and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. But this efficiency also comes at a cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impacts of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to proper use of results in mine design. The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

High-production methods like longwall mining with hydraulic powered supports are necessary to increase underground coal production in India. Longwall mining had a mixed success record for Indian geo-mining conditions. In this paper, an analysis is presented to optimally design an array of chain pillars in multi-seam longwall mining panels in the deepest coal mine in India. The study found that a chain pillar of 80-m width and 195-m length is necessary for long-term stability without any reinforcement. It was also observed that an optimum chain pillar can be designed by providing suitable side reinforcement (side bolting) which will reduce the chain pillar dimensions to 55-m width and 160-m length. Optimum design of chain pillars will reduce the coal locked up in these chain pillars by ~ 77%. This will also reduce the gestation period of longwall mining panel development. This paper also evaluates the maximum tensile subsidence strain induced at the surface and finds that the values are within the safe working limit of 3 mm/m. Thus, this paper finds direct application in the design of future multi-seam retreating longwall mining panels in Indian geo-mining conditions.

The Bright water Conveyance System includes 21 km of tunnels mined by two earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and two slurry TBMs. The probabilistic baseline approach defined in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) can representatively be verified by use of a comprehensive tracking system to identify face conditions that allows comparison with the baselines. The glacial geology includes a high lateral variation in soil types that, when combined with the pressurized face tunneling methods, creates challenges for documenting face conditions. Baseline tracking using spoil samples and TBM operational parameters provides information to document actual conditions and support resolution of differing site condition claims.

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.

When a fan or blower breaks down or becomes worn, customers have two choices. They can replace it or they can have it repaired. In the past, replacement was the preferred option, especially when the equipment was severely damaged or worn. Now, however, customers are discovering the benefits of repairing or rebuilding. Even when the cost of repair is more than 60 percent of the cost of a new fan, customers are choosing the repair option. The cost savings can range from 20 percent to 80 percent. In many cases, the quality of the repaired part or component will exceed the quality of the original. This is because repair engineers have an advantage over the original designers. They can see how the existing fan performed — or failed to perform — in a specific application.

In this study, a process to separate manganese and iron from manganiferous iron ores by reductive acid leaching followed by magnetic separation was conceived and experimentally tested. In the leaching process, sulfuric acid was used as lixiviant and oxalic acid was used as reductant. The experimental results showed that the manganese and iron separation was optimum when the concentration of the sulfuric acid and oxalic acid were 0.75 M and 30 g/L, respectively, at a temperature of 80 °C, a solid/ liquid ratio of 67 g/L, stirring speed of 400 rpm, and leaching duration of 60 min. Under this condition, 90.49% and 6.78% of Mn and Fe were dissolved, respectively, from the ore sample with a size fraction of − 106 μm. It was determined that the leaching of manganese from the ores was a second-order reaction with an activation energy (Ea) of 53.38 kJ/mol. The leaching residues obtained under the optimum condition were subjected to high-intensity wet magnetic separation tests to recover the remaining iron content. This separation process produced a concentrate containing 56.20% Fe and 1.79% Mn with iron and manganese recoveries of 56.83% and 66.73%, respectively. A magnetic separation test from an unleached ore sample was also carried out as a benchmark. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a magnetic separation process was used to a residue obtained from reductive acid leaching of manganiferous iron ores to recover iron.

This paper presents an algorithm for optimizing the classification of surface mine material subject to excavating constraints. High-resolution expected profit models are input and optimized to classification maps subject to site-specific rectangular excavating constraints. This optimization problem defies traditional closed-form analytical solutions; a practical heuristic algorithm has been developed to quickly determine the optimal final destination for the material subject to realistic constraints. The optimization is fast and generates results that achieve up to 98–99% of the total expected profit achieved with free selection. This algorithm provides a fast viable option for practical application in short-term grade control and in managing multiple realizations in long-term resource estimation.

With prevailing assumptions that plentiful domestic coal reserves will be available for meeting our Nation’s expectations for on future low emission, coal-fired power plants, major government funding in Clean Coal Technology, and Carbon Sequestration Programs continues to be aggressive. However, after more than a decade of cutbacks in funding for domestic coal-related programs and personnel, there is a growing concern that adequate quantification and qualification of our Nation’s coal reserves is increasingly being compromised. This paper will define the growing concerns and dichotomies that continue to increase, and address the decreasing number of fossil fuel mapping and assessment programs by Federal and State programs.

One of the most energy-intensive processes for producing submicron range calcite is stirred media mill. In the present work, numerous operating parameters such as solid mass fraction, grinding media size, media filling ratio, and grinding time have been investigated using a vertical type stirred media mill. The results are evaluated on the basis of mean particle size, specific surface area, and specific energy consumption. After conducting this study, optimum experimental conditions found to be as 70% media filling ratio, 25% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. Besides, energy savings up to 22% were achieved with the choice of proper media size.

Long extensible conveyor systems are an important option for efficient tunnel excavation where intermediate access is impractical. The conveyor system designed for the Pula Subbaiah Veligonda Tunnel #2 in Andhra Pradesh, India will eventually extend to 19.35km. The Ø10.0m water diversion tunnel will be excavated under India?s largest tiger sanctuary using a Robbins Double Shield TBM. Once extended, the conveyor will be one of the longest single-flight systems ever installed in India, and is expected to offer increased system availability over comparable systems using muck cars. This paper will examine the engineering challenges of long-flight extensible conveyor systems in the areas of belt selection, component design, and equipment location in confined assembly and launch areas
