In view of the bad effect that Na-bentonite direct adsorb Pb2+-containing wastewater, this article has carried out two kinds modification treatment on Na-bentonite: the direct microwave radiation modification and microwave radiation organic modification by adding quaternary ammonium salt?cetyltrimethylammonium bromide,and analysis the main influencing factors of the modification effect. In static conditions, preparing Pb2+-containing wastewater as the research object, it has respectively studied the effects of Na-bentonite, microwave soil of direct microwave modification and microwave soil of organic modification on the process of adsorption Pb2+, and discusses the effects of pH value, temperature, adsorbent dosage, stirring time on the adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater by modified bentonite, at the same time it does a verification test to the practical Pb2+-containing wastewater. Comparison the effects of adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater, the results show that organic modified microwave bentonite is obviously better than direct microwave modified bentonite and Na-bentonite, and can make 6 mg/L Pb2+-containing wastewater meet the national discharge standards. Through scanning electron microscope, the result of test is that organic modified microwave bentonite is the cause of improving adsorption Pb2+ in wastewater. Preparing modified bentonite by microwave heating will not only shorten the response time, reduce energy consumption and work-load, but also modified effect is good.

"With the increasing depletion of high-grade ore deposits, smarter mineral processing solutions are required to achieve sustainable and economic methods for mining and processing low-grade deposits. In order to make the treatment of low-grade deposits economically viable, large quantities of rock need to be mined and processed. The associated infrastructure costs (power, water supply, accommodation and support services, waste storage) result in a substantial penalty on the project, from both capital and operating cost perspectives. As a consequence, the challenge for the mining industry is to overcome the associated rise in energy and water consumption as well as increased project complexity when processing large amounts of low grade ore. Ore sorting technologies have been used for many years, predominantly on small projects, enabling the upgrade of marginal ores. Several sorting methods based on characteristics including specific gravity, radiometry, colour, particle size, grade and other detectable physical characteristics have been employed. The challenge for large low-grade ore bodies is to crush and sort at coarser rock size in order to minimise specific energy consumption in comminution and to reduce waste disposal costs. For large projects, the understanding of the economic impact of ore sorting is limited. The economic drivers include plant head grade improvement; sorting infrastructure capital, operating and maintenance costs; waste material handling and other environmental costs related to waste disposal. This paper analyses the economic impact of ore sorting in a large mineral processing operation. The focus of the analysis is to compare NPVs for a circuit including screening and ore sorting stages. A project for processing an Australian copper sulphide ore is considered as an example for this study."

"The purpose of the research is to monitor ball mill filling by means of signals usually measured in its electrical drive. The method is based on the mill torque estimated from rotor speed and induction motor stator voltage and currents. New signal processing is presented in both time and frequency domain for measurements in a dry laboratory ball mill. Statistical analysis is applied to time series resulting in good correlation to mill filling. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and power spectral density (PSD) also resulted in an accurate filling indicator. The proposed method does not need any sensor to be installed directly on the mill and requires only sensors usually available for motor control purposes. The experimental results showed that the method have potential to be used to construct an automatic system for monitoring operational variables in ball mills. The aim of this monitoring is to improve energy efficiency, reliability and productivity.INTRODUCTION Recently, a great number of papers have pointed the importance of ball mill filling monitoring and also of grinding control (Lu, et al., 2014) (Ramasamy, et al., 2005) (Tsamatsoulis, 2014) (Zhou, et al., 2009). Additionally, great amount of control techniques have also been presented with several complexity degrees (Tsamatsoulis, 2014). According to Eremenko (2015) the lack of effective and accurate methods for fill level measurement is the main reason that makes mill optimal control so complicated. It happens because nonlinearity, long time delay and time varying features of the ball mill turns difficult to develop a truly efficient method for monitoring filling. At the same time, fill level has a determining role in charge motion and consequently on particle breakage. For low levels of filling many energy is expended in impacts with very low breakage efficiency. Those impacts can also damage mill liner. In contrast, high levels of filling causes damping effects that reduces breakage and can also affect energy consumption. Based on this it is conclusive that fill level measurement of ball mills is an important issue for grinding efficiency. This fill level information can be used for operators to control ball mills and also for engineers to run simulations and improve confidence levels of circuit designs (Shi, 2016)."

A large amount of polluted sludge is produced by a nonferrous metal factory after treating waste water with lime/ferrous salt. The concentration of arsenic in the dried sludge is high to 5.84%, a toxicity test is taken on the sludge according to GB5085.3-2007 and the extraction content is 15.75mg/L, which surpasses the arsenic extraction standard [As]=5mg/L, the sludge is categorized as hazardous waste. If put outside without disposal, it would be very harmful to environments. Here we report an optimum protocol to extract arsenic; S2- alkaline liquor is utilized to treat the arsenic sludge. At 85?, 10L 7% S2- liquor is added into 1kg dried sludge and the resulting mixture is stirred for 120min at 250r/min, then separated by centrifugation and the compressed waste residue dried naturally. The average arsenic content is 1.40mg/L, lower than GB5085.3-2007 Standard and arsenic-free residue is consistent with GB18598-2001 Standard, which can be bury safely. The extracted arsenic is transferred into copper arsensite for use as addictive in copper electrolysis and the waste water can be recycle after calcium is removed.

"Lithium discovered in La Vi deposit, Quang Ngai province in the Central of Vietnam was estimated with a reserve of approximately 1.5 million tones of lithium ore, which was characterized by mainly lepidolite with muscovite, albite, and quartz. This study investigated reasonable flowsheet and optimal conditions of enrichment technology for lepidolite from the mined ore by flotation process, and producing Li2CO3 and LiCl from lepidolite concentrate by hydrometallurgical process. The significant conditions for froth flotation of lithium ore including particle size, pH of ore slurry, pulp density, chemical spending (collectors, activators, depressants, and frothers), stirring and flotation time were investigated. The identified reasonable flowsheet and optimal conditions for froth flotation the La Vi lithium ore processed lepidolite concentrate containing up to 4 wt.% Li2O with a recovery of 87.61 wt.%. The processes of sulfation roasting lepidolite concentrate using FeSO4.7H2O, then leaching in H2SO4 solution, and removing impurities were carried out to prepare a pure lithium-bearing solution for producing Li2CO3 and LiCl. The products containing 99.05 wt.% of Li2CO3 and 99.02 wt.% of LiCl were obtained with recoveries of 82.97 wt.% and 85.77 wt.%, respectively. The obtained results indicated that lithium ore in La Vi deposit can be processed to produce commercial lithium products and lead the study to develop technology for a new industry of lithium processing in Vietnam.INTRODUCTION Lithium is the lightest metal, which has many superior properties in both metal and compound (such as Li2CO3, LiCl...) states since its discovery in 1817 by Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson. Lithium is a favourable material for many high technology fields such as aerospace industry and chemical industry. Some industrial fields which present the main consumptions of lithium include ceramic, glass, aluminum alloy, lubricants, rechargeable Li-ion batteries, synthetic rubber, and pharmaceuticals. The worldwide production of lithium in 2014 was 31,700 tones, continually increased in 2015 of 5% presented 32,500 tones (USGS, 2016). The demand for lithium tends to increase because of the raising in consumption of lithium batteries. Lithium is mined from salar brines, mainly in Chile and Bolivia, but also from granites and pegmatites, which contain minerals with high lithium content such as spodumene - LiAlSi2O6 (Heinrich et al., 1978; Linnen et al., 2012); petalite - LiAlSi4O10 (Sitando & Crouse, 2012); zinnwaldite - KLiFe2+Al(AlSi3O10)(F,OH)2 (Paukov et al., 2010; Kondás J. & Jandová J., 2006); lepidolite - K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2 (Luong et al., 2013); and amblygonite - LiAlPO4F (Garrett, 2004)."

"Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a typically synthetic depressant and may be used as a depressor of pyrite. The modification of polyacrylamide may improve its physicochemical properties and performances. Sulfonated polyacrylamides (SPAM) with different sulfonation degree (SD) were prepared using sodium sulfite as the sulfonating agent, and the interactions of SPAM and pyrite were investigated by the adsorption experiment in this work. The adsorption tests of SPAM on pyrite were conducted as a function of sulfonation degree, pH value and contact time. Pyrite and SPAM were constructed and optimized through MS software. The interaction mechanisms of sulfonated polyacrylamide and pyrite were simulated by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the adsorption capacities of SPAM at neutral and weak alkaline conditions are higher than that at acidic and strong basic conditions. The high sulfonation degree favors the adsorption of SPAM on pyrite surface. The adsorption process can be described best by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the adsorption of sulfonated polyacrylamide on pyrite is better than that of polyacrylamide. Sulfonated polyacrylamide can be used as a potential depressant of pyrite with the main interacting mechanism of hydrogenbond force.INTRODUCTIONPyrite is the most abundant sulfide mineral and often associated with valuable minerals such as galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite, gold, diaspore as well as coal (Forrest et al., 2001; Jaiswal et al., 2015; Maier and Dobiáš, 1997; Qiu et al., 2017; Xin and Liye, 2010). Froth flotation is the most popular method to remove pyrite from valuable minerals. Pyrite could be floated as the flotation concentrate either by its hydrophobicity or activation by metal ions (Chandra and Gerson, 2009). What is more, pyrite could be seperated as flotation tailing by adding highly selective depressants including inorganic and organic modifiers. Polysaccharides polymers and lignosulfonate-based biopolymers are common natural organic depressants (Deng et al., 2017; Mu et al., 2016). While the synthetic organic products have proved to be particularly versatile in terms of molecule tailing capability and controlled structures (Boulton et al., 2001a; Raffa et al., 2015)."

"The use of ball mills for fine grinding is an inefficient process and has contributed to the increasing popularity of vertical stirred grinding mills in the minerals industry. Over the last decade, the performance and energy efficiency of stirred milling technology has become a preferred alternative to ball mills for fine and regrinding operations. The difficulty encountered in fine grinding is the increased resistance to comminute small particles when compared to coarse particles. Therefore, increased energy inputs are then necessary to raise the number of stress events in a mill to contribute to the comminution of fine particles. This work discusses the effect of operating conditions on the amount of fines produced and torque readings in a screw type batch laboratory vertical stirred mill. A time-based population balance model (PBM) was used to empirically analyze the performance of a vertical mill and to calculate mill breakage parameters for the different operating conditions tested. The results indicate the possibility of applying population balance model to the vertical stirred mill to predict product size distribution with acceptable accuracy. The obtained breakage function shows that the main breakage mechanism in this vertical stirred mill is by attrition, and that the selection function changes with experimental conditions within the mill. Higher agitator velocities are also seen to promote an increase in the degree of attrition between grinding media hence particle selection and fines generation increase.INTRODUCTION Stirred milling technology has been firmly established in the last 20 years as superior to ball mills for fine and regrinding operations due to its superior energy efficiency (Jankovic, et al., 2006). Stirred mills are now commonly used in many sectors of the mining industry, though they have been used in other industries for many years (Stehr & Schwedes, 1983). The leftover materials are always abandoned as crabs, which not only pollute the environment but also waste our resources. The study intends to find a new measure to decompose and to reuse the mica plate leftover materials so as to create a new production process of mica plate, which is clean and does not produce crabs.

"The static and dynamic models for autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills have been studied for decades. Though the effects of mixing soft and hard ores in a mill and their interactions are not widely investigated. To develop a general numerical model for AG/SAG mills, a dynamic model has been introduced, and its capability to simulate multi component ore breakage has been examined and compared with previous publications. The simulation results show that the dynamic model can cover a range of milling conditions and is able to simulate complex scenarios with soft and hard ores. The dynamic model discussed here could provide substantial potential for the controlling and optimization of the comminution circuits. INTRODUCTION In the last decades, efforts have been devoted to studying the comminution circuit due to their high energy consumption. The energy directly spent in minerals comminution was about 2% globally in the year 2000 (Maurice et al, 2003). As one important part of the comminution process, AG/SAG mills are widely used for primary grinding in minerals processing. AG/SAG mill models include static and dynamic models (Kojovic et al, 2012; Yu et al, 2014; Yu et al, 2017; Liu and Spencer, 2004; Salazar et al, 2009). Many static models have been well validated over the past decades, but they are all based on steady state assumptions. Even though plants experience a steady-state condition under certain circumstances, it can be inaccurate to simulate the system by static models under all circumstances (Asbjörnsson et al, 2013). The advantages of a dynamic model are apparent that it provides more information and insights both inside the mill and through interactions with other machines in terms of pebble crushers, conveyor belts, screens and so on. In many mines, the multi-component grinding is inevitable, and the ratio of hard and soft components in the mill strongly affects mills operation and performance. Bueno (Bueno et al, 2010; Bueno et al, 2013) studied the effects of blending hard and soft ores in AG/SAG mills and used them to update the JKSimMet toolkit which was a steady state plant simulation software. However, due to the complexity of the particle interactions such as multi-component breakage function, appearance function, in mill transportation, there has been no dynamic AG/SAG mill models developed yet for simulating multi-component."

Liberation of valuable minerals from low-grade ores is an important challenge faced by the minerals industry. It is necessary to grind the ore to extremely fine size in order to liberate the mineral from such ores. As it is generally difficult to produce ultra-fine particles of diameter less than 1-10 mm using traditional grinding equipment such as the ball mill and the rod mill, several new types of grinding equipment are being explored to produce ultra-fine particles. The planetary ball mill is promising in that it makes grinding to submicron sizes possible by imparting high energy to the ground powder. It consists of four pots mounted on a disc. The pots and the disc rotate in opposite directions. The high-speed rotation of the pots and the disc makes the grinding media move at high centrifugal velocities leading to high impact energy and thus improving the grinding performance. The planetary mill is currently being explored for its capability to produce ultra-fine particles on a large scale. In this context, there is a need to understand the dynamics of the ultra-fine grinding process within the planetary ball mill. Here, we address this need by studying the movement of media inside the pots and the grinding kinetics, employing both experimental and modeling techniques. The experiments were conducted on a laboratory scale planetary ball mill. The particle size distribution of the powder was monitored to allow an estimate of the grinding kinetics to be made while video images of the media profiles inside the pots were taken to allow quantification of the media movement as a function of process variables such as the media size, percent loading, etc. The population balance modeling (PBM) framework was used to simulate the kinetics of grinding while the discrete element modeling (DEM) approach was utilized to simulate the media motion. The parameters in the population balance model, namely, the specific breakage rate and the breakage distribution function were determined by fitting the batch grinding equation to the experimental data. The predicted powder size distributions were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The experimental results have shown that the mean size of product powder decreases as the size of the grinding media decreases. Nickel and cobalt production relies heavily on the processing of nickel laterite ores; these ores contain the majority of known Ni and Co reserves, 80% and 90% ~ 95%, respectively. The Caron process is used to extract Ni and Co metals from low-grade nickel laterite ores (1% Ni and 0.1% Co). It involves selective reduction of NiO and CoO minerals followed by ammoniacal leaching. Despite low metal recoveries, this process continues to be technically and economically reliable and thus commercially important globally. However, keeping the Caron process cost-effective has been a challenge for industries because of increasing economic and environmental pressures. Although studies of the Caron process have been extensive, significant improvements in recoveries of industrial processes have not been forthcoming. Reported industrial metal recovery from high iron content ore is only 80% ~ 85% for Ni and only 40% ~ 45% for Co; recovery is even lower for ores rich in magnesium. The real difficulty here is that there is no complete understanding of and control over the complex series of reactions in the ore and in the leaching solution during processing. Achieving effective metal recoveries from the Caron will require control of the mineral transformations, which affect the activation of minerals by reduction. In this study, the effect of over-reduction was investigated, which superseded the effect of activation by lowering the activity of the minerals and thus metal dissolution. Reduction was carried out in a batch reduction apparatus with 1:1 and 1:2.5 CO/CO2 gas mixtures from temperatures of 500 ~ 700°C and residence times up to 60 minutes. The pre-reduced ores were leached using a standard ammoniacal leaching test. Thermodynamic analysis and possible effects of stable phase field on leaching was examined. The results suggest that control of over reduction effects are directly related to the mineral transformation and reduction conditions.

Three high-grade limestone ores (CaO content over than 53 %) with different geological origin have been characterized for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. Limestone ores examined in this study showed different crystal particle size that cause difference in disintegration degree and surface area of the synthesized slaked limes. The limestone ore with smaller crystal particle size showed higher disintegration degree and also yielded slaked lime with smaller surface area, which is good for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. The synthesis of aragonite PCC using the limestone with a small crystal particle size was yielded needle-shaped aragonite with the aspect ratio of about 14. The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region produced a sub-stance called Crud (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The crud was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the crud confirmed that ex-posed crud leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil. Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, i.e. sulphuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels i.e. 0.001M, 0.0001M and 0.00001M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulphuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling in-creased. Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil?s porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

The separation of albites from quartz by flotation applying the conventional HF-methods is no longer acceptable from an environmental and health point of view. Therefore, the search for a new reagent scheme without using HF depressor for separation of albite from quartz is under consideration. The flotation behaviour of ore mineral components depends on the produced hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface coverage (chemical functionalization). Currently we have excellent possibility of monitoring surface composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels at surfaces of natural minerals contacted with aqueous solutions of collectors, activators, depressants which is vitally important for the understanding of the surface chemistry that govern selective and efficient flotation. Detailed surface characterization of minerals before and after their exposition to different solution conditions was performed by the most modern spectroscopic techniques such as developed by us the infrared external reflection technique combined with spectral simulation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is possible to monitor surface reactions which facilitate the separation process and those which bring disadvantage to selective flotation. At first we found that a small amount of ?mineral impurity? presented in natural ore could play important role in selective hydrophobization process. It was found that the pH of solution (parameter possible to control) and natural mineral impurities present in mineral samples (parameter related to ore origin) play a very important role in the separation process. Another important parameter is interaction between minerals, quartz and albite, present in aqueous solution. The limitation of flotation separation resulting from chemistry will be discussed. Moreover, the most promising scheme for separation of albites from quartz will be examined.

"Water shortage becomes a major challenge in mining industry. The best example is Chile where the Chilean authorities declared a state of emergency in 2012. Depletion of high grade ore-bodies necessitates the use of low grade ores. If the demand for metals remains constant, more low-grade ores need to be mined to produce the same tonnages of metals. This increases the water demand in mining industry. Mining industry competes with other industries such as agriculture and manufacturing. Agriculture and manufacturing consume 1500 and 2300 billion m3 water respectively. The global use is 4500 billion m3 while the mining uses 80 billion m3 of water per annum.To tackle the water challenges in mining industry and also avoid competing with other users for fresh water, many efforts have been made, including using lower quality waters to reduce the fresh water consumption in ore processing. Saline water or hyper saline water from seas or the ground is accessible; however the cost of desalination is remarkable. Desalination plants and associated pipelines and pumps capital cost can easily exceed $ 500 million. Saline water will certainly increase the operating costs due to high wear rate of mechanical equipment but at current situation of mining industry spending all this money upfront does not look attractive. Desalination leaves salt on land at mine site which may create environmental issues.Dry processing can be a solution for water shortage in mineral processing. Wet processes dispose tailings on land with little or no agricultural productivity. It also may contaminate surface and ground water and generate dust. This paper reviews the water consumption by various mineral commodities, discuss briefly about recent of application of salt water in mineral processes and finally discuss about dry processes as alternative solution for water shortage in mining industry."

The German Kupferschiefer (copper shale) mining history reaches back over 800 years with its last active mines being shut down in 1990. Increasing metal demands and potential thread of future supply shortages led to the initiation of new exploration programs including feasibility studies for the Spremberg deposit as well as Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded research investigations of Kupferschiefer Waste Dump treatment in the Mansfelder region. This article describes the sensor based sorting results of coarse Kupferschiefer via Near Infrared (NIR) Sorting, being conducted by the department of mineral processing (AMR) in Aachen, Germany. It provides information about the necessity of presorting of the different ore types prior to flotation and puts the NIR Sorting results into context with conventional Kupferschiefer processing. "Chelopech concentrator (part of Dundee Precious Metals) is located in central-western Bulgaria. The current process plant utilizes conventional primary crushing and SAG mill grinding, copper and pyrite rougher and cleaner flotation stages to produce a marketable gold-rich copper and pyrite concentrates. As in the most processing plants, the pyrite depression is carried out alkaline media using lime. The subsequent activation of pyrite mineral is achieved by adding sulfuric acid, which has an adverse effect on the flotation equipment. Therefore, a series of laboratory flotation experiment for activation of lime depressed pyrite by ammonium salts, such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4 and ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3), have been conducted. The obtained results showed that ammonium bicarbonate proved to be the most appropriate reagent choice for pyrite mineral activation. These results are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), performed to determine the surface chemistry of pyrite in its natural state, after lime treatment and subsequent treatment by NH4HCO3. The registered XPS spectra indicate that the hydrophilic phases on the pyrite surface could be efficiently removed by using the ammonium salt NH4HCO3. The industrial use of NH4HCO3 as an activator of lime-depressed pyrite is a possible alternative for sulfuric acid replacement as a most widely used pyrite activator. Flotation experiments with addition of 200, 400, 600 and 800 g/t from each of the studied ammonium salts have been conducted. Furthermore, the impact of the flotation pulp pH within the scope of 9.00 – 10.50 was also investigated. The obtained results from the laboratory flotation experiments, showed that the pyrite activation with ammonium bicarbonate is an excellent possibility for replacing the sulfuric acid as main pyrite activator reagent, in order to eliminate the gypsum accumulation during the flotation of pyrite in Chelopech concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Chelopech deposit, located about 60 km east of Sofia is one of the largest Cu-Au deposits in Europe. The ore have complicated mineralogical and chemical composition. The main ore minerals are represented by pyrite, enargite (luzonite), tennantite, chalcopyrite and bornite. Calcium carbonate has three polymorphs: calcite, aragonite, and vaterite. Needlelike aragonite CaCO3 with a high ratio of length to diameter (aspect ratio) is widely used in plastics, rubber and ceramics as a filler and in pigments and paints as a carrier. This paper investigated the influence of H3PO4 dosage, reaction temperature, CO2 flow rate, and initial Ca(OH)2 concentration on formation of needlelike aragonite CaCO3. It was found that the presence of H3PO4 in Ca(OH)2 suspension resulted in rapid formation of (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) crystal nuclei, which facilitated nucleation and growth of aragonite CaCO3 on the formed (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) crystal surfaces. The results revealed that H3PO4 addition of P/Ca of 0. 2~0. 3, high temperature of 75~85 °C, low CO2 flow rate and initial Ca(OH)2 solid concentration of 1. 5 %~5. 6 % are beneficial to formation of aragonite. Well crystallized needlelike aragonite CaCO3 whiskers with length > 20 µm and aspect ratio > 15 were directly synthesized.

"This study gives an insight into non-destructive testing methods suitable for porosity analysis at a small scale, firstly summarizing relevant state-of-the-art technology and pending patents, secondly realizing and documenting the start-up of the VHX-2000 digital microscope by the manufacturer Keyence and thirdly demonstrating practical application with the extended analysis of three fundamentally different agglomerates for which important application-related parameters are determined. Various analysis procedures on the different agglomerates the efficient and timesaving operational features of the digital microscope are outlined. Firstly an analysis of flax fibre agglomerates determines the process conditions best suited to produce agglomerates with specific properties by determining sphericity, cubicity, density and porosity as well as fibre damage and alteration. Secondly the production of iron-hydroxide - hemp-fibre agglomerates serves to obtain information on porosity values as a result of a cauterization of the fibres. The third analysis provides estimations of porosity values for acid-treated lignin agglomerates. Measurements were carried out with compact dry agglomerates and with soaked, expanded agglomerates, determining factors for total water carrying capacity. Practicability of non-destructive testing by digital microscopy is demonstrated and explained concerning the applications in this study by obtaining definite structural findings about the analysed agglomerates. Information on its operation is made available by a practice-oriented manual for the VHX-2000 digital microscope. Further suggestions for more in-detail analysis results with different instruments are given."
