Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

Rotor speed is one of the key hydrodynamic parameters in froth-flotation and it plays an important role in bubble-particle attachment. Laboratory scale studies for optimizing the rotor speed to achieve maximum flotation rate constant (K) of quartz, ground by ball mill, are. Purity of quartz was 99.4 percent and d80 of ball mill product was 230 µm. Each size fraction was separately subjected to flotation at three different rotor speeds, namely, 1200, 1000 and 800 rpm, and the flotation rate constant was calculated. The results showed that the flotation rate constant was high at the rotor speed of 1200 rpm. The flotation rate constants achieved at 1200 rpm were 8.676, 8.232, 7.818, 7.248, 7.068 and 6.984 min-1forthesize fractions of +300, -300+250, -250+212, -180+150, -150+125 and -125+106 µm, respectively. Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.

Large-scale continuous ?Resin-In-Pulp? process tests were conducted at Irgiredmet. The object for testing was the sample of oxidized gold ore from one of Siberian deposit. Weak-base ion ex-change resin PuroGold was used as adsorbent. The duration of ?Resin-In-Pulp? tests was sufficient for a completing of three cycles ?Adsorption/Elution?. Gold in feed was 0.95 mg/L. Gold in solid phase of adsorption tails? 0.065 g/t. Gold in liquid phase of adsorption tails? 0.026 mg/L. Total gold in adsorption tails ?0.11 g/t. Gold recovery ?94.3 %. The use of regenerated resin had practically no effect on gold losses with adsorption tails. Alkaline cyanide solution (NaCN-20g/L, NaOH- 5g/L) was used as eluent for gold elution from loaded resin. Elution temperature ?60 °C. Number of eluent bed volumes passed ?10. Loaded resin analysis was following (g/ton): Au? 1700~1250; Ag? 400~460; Cu? 250~450; Zn? 5100~9600; Fe? 860~1200. Elution efficiency: Au? 95.3%~97.8%; Ag? 84.0%~88.0%; Cu? 84.0%~88.0%; Zn? 97.0%~99.0%. Although high zinc resin loading was shown zinc was eluted efficiently. The adsorption properties of fresh PuroGold resin, PuroGold resin after 3 cycle ?Adsorp-tion-Elution?cycles in comparison with AM-2B resin were tested. It was shown from adsorption isotherms that selectivity of PuroGold resin slightly less in comparison with AM-2B resin mainly due to its higher zinc adsorption properties. It was founded on base of test results that adsorption properties of PuroGold resin was practically constant during three ?Adsorption/Elution? cycles. Gold may be efficiently recovered by resin tested. There were no difficulties during gold elution from loaded resin and its regeneration. PuroGold resin was recommended for industrial use in RIP process. Process design criteria were developed and plant design is on progress at the moment.

Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

Several approaches to the estimation of the size discrete breakage rate and distribution parameters (kj and bi,j ) of the batch grinding kinetic model are available in the literature. Analysis of a large amount of data available in the literature and our own data on several pure minerals and complex ores has shown that it is not always possible to obtain correct estimates of the two sets of parameters using known approaches as several widely different combinations of k and b parameters can sometimes simulate the batch grinding data reasonably accurately. It has been found that there are two main reasons: (i) all size classes are not well represented in the data and (ii) functional forms used for estimation of the two sets of parameters are sometimes chosen somewhat arbitrarily (especially in the case of complex ores), though they are actually uniquely related through size continuous breakage rate and distribution functions. A suitable experimental methodology has been described and demonstrated using some synthetic data and actual experimental data. A mill function approach, which does not require making any assumptions about the functional forms for k and b parameters, is also described and demonstrated. This approach is promising, but requires further development.

Despite the successful industrial practice to recovery KCl by flotation, the adsorption state of collectors at KCl salt surfaces is still not fully understood. In this paper, the captive bubble contact angle measurements at KCl and NaCl crystal surfaces in their saturated solutions are reported. The influence of different collectors and their concentration are considered. The results show that both cationic and anionic collectors produce a hydrophobic state at the structure breaking KCl salt sur-face, with finite contact angle values of between 30o and 40o. In contrast, the contact angle at the structure making NaCl salt surface is zero at all collector concentrations, suggesting that no collec-tor adsorption occurs, a supposition that is supported by results from molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). Further, it appears that the presence of surface defects such as edges and corners promote the adsorption of collectors at the KCl surface, and that the flotation is achieved by bubble attachment at the edges/corners of KCl particles with the formation of aeroflocs.

In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

"For the traditional principle of flotation cell design, or in the perspective of some researchers, the mixing effect of impeller for flotation cell is not only to suspend the particles off the bottom, but also to mix slurry well to achieve a uniform system. But for some special processing conditions, the depth profile of slurry concentration and particle size demonstrates an obvious difference. In the part around of the impeller in the cell, the slurry concentration is much higher than the part below the lip.For the vanadium titano-magnetite flotation process, distinguished with high concentration and large coarse particle size fraction, even though the concentration is very high, it can reach good gas dispersion, which is a fundamental principle for flotation cell design and application. The gas dispersion is not a challenge in the high slurry concentration environment, not only in the vertical direction, but in the cross section. Different levels (the distance from the lip is 400mm, 700mm, 1200mm, 1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) slurry in the flotation cell is sampled and analyzed. The slurry concentration of the 3 levels(1700mm, 2200mm, 2700mm) is about 55%, but the slurry concentration decreases from 55% to 25% sharply towards the lip.Therefore, a new understanding and viewpoint is presented, that the uniform system of slurry is not always reasonable for all of the flotation process. For some special process, if the coarse particles are needed to agitated well and transported to the upper cell, the quiescent zone in the upper cell will be destroyed and enhance the detachment probability for the coarse particles. The difference of slurry concentration and particle size fraction benefits the air dispersion and coarse mineral particles recovery.1.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, flotation is the most widely used separation process in the mineral processing industry. Spherical grinding media (balls) are the most widely used media for comminution of ores by grinding. A modelling simulation study of the behavior of two grinding media in the grinding process was conducted to determine the possible advantages of the new shape milling bodies called tetraballpebs. Tetraballpebs are in the shape of tetrahedrons with spherical convex walls. A three dimensional CAD model of the mill drum with a diameter of 1200 mm was used. A continuous operating mode was simulated in terms of the 3D contact elements of the model (milling bodies and mill drum). Simulation tests were carried out in a typical grinding mode and at a typical rotational speed of the drum mill (75 per cent of the critical speed in cataracting mode). Studies carried out with both grinding media include equal number of milling bodies with the same weight and volume. Having thus ensured a uniform mass of the grinding media and same number of milling bodies, and constant other conditions and process parameters, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of the shape of the milling bodies on the grinding process. In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.

A new porous apatite product was prepared using phosphorite from Yichang China by a tem-plate-directed method in self-made reaction equipment under constant temperature and pressure. The product was characterized by XRD, FT-IR and SEM. The results showed that the product was a kind of micrometer porous sphere three-dimensionally structured by apatite nanoflakes, that the average thickness of nanoflakes was about 50 nm, that the average pore size was about 1.2 µm and that the particle average size was about 20 µm. Great amounts of Ca2+channel, high special surface area and regular spherical shape show the potential promising applications of this special porous apatite product in the fields of catalyst, medication, chemical engineering and environment engineering

In last decade, along with its booming Chinese economy, China?s higher education has experienced rapid growth. In 2010, the number of various colleges totals more than 3500, with 2.2 million faculties registered. Currently there are almost 30 million students studying in the colleges, 3 times more than 10 years ago. Mineral Processing was initiated in 1949 as a sub-discipline of Mining Engineering, one of the 13 first level disciplines. Mineral Processing is now established in 34 Chinese colleges, recruiting 2600 undergraduate students, 540 postgraduate students and 100 PhD students every year. A further 9 institutes offer postgraduate education in this field. More than 3000 graduates majoring in Mineral Processing join the industry or institutions each year. The four-year undergraduate teaching and practical training in the colleges is designed to produce qualified mineral processing professionals. This includes courses in mathematics and natural science, fundamental engineering and basic and specialization courses. Recently, the ?Excellent Engineer Program? was launched to strengthen students? practical capabilities. This is a 3+1 teaching and training model; 3 years of theoretical course study plus 1 accumulated year of various practical studies, either inside or outside the college. As for graduate employment, mining-related major graduates have been in a good demand thanks to the intensive investment in mineral sector by Chinese companies. The shortage of experienced metallurgists generates a greater than 90% employment rate for Mineral Processing graduates. However, the biggest problem we are still facing is the gap between the quality of the graduates and the requirements of industry, as a result of occupation attraction, teaching systems, faculty quality, and so forth. Another problem is international orientation. Although nowadays Chinese-foreign cooperation in college education is popular, collaborative mineral related projects are far less common, leaving much room for improvement. Looking ahead to the next 10 years, we still have the right reasons to estimate continued prosperity in the minerals sector as well as mineral processing education in China. Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

"This article summarises the efforts to reduce the energy consumption in grinding in a magnetite ore beneficiation plant. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih ore beneficiation plant produces magnetite concentrate at 65% Fe and 8% SiO2, of which the D80 is approximately 44µm after three stages of grinding with ball mills and magnetic separation. Characterisation and laboratory scale bench tests performed on samples from the beneficiation plant indicate that the industrial flowsheet could be simplified. After the first stage of grinding and magnetic separation, a significant size fraction of the intermediate concentrate is already well liberated. Therefore, it can be directly concentrated in a second stage magnetic separation without further grinding. If a screen of 150µm size can be implemented after the first stage of grinding-magnetic separation, only the oversize of screening, representing 35% of the material, requires secondary and tertiary grinding and magnetic separation. The combined concentrate from the two fractions already meets the industrial specifications. This new route can provide the same final product, with fewer mills; it saves around 30% in energy consumption only in the grinding step without changing the main structures of the processing plant.INTRODUCTION Comminution, including crushing and grinding, is responsible for at least 40% of total energy usage in mining and mineral processing. This paper shows an example to reduce grinding cost, by changing the flow sheet design strategy in ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (AMKR).AMKR is one of the most important mining and steel complexes in Krivoy Rog basin in Ukraine, which has been studied over 100 years because of mining of iron ores. The iron ores are associated to Banded Iron Formation of the Saksagan suite, with an average iron grade of around 36 percent Fe. The total thickness of the Krivoy Rog Supergroup reaches 5-6 km, whereas that of the iron-ore Saksagan Group comprises up to 1400 m. High-grade iron ore extends to more than 2,000 m below present surface"

Ore breakage characterization plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits. Recently, the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT). The JKRBT uses a rotor-stator impacting system, in which particles gain a con-trolled kinetic energy and are impacted against the stator, causing particle breakage. The first unit of industrialised JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research in South Africa in March 2007, and five more JKRBTs are currently being fabricated for some of the world?s major mining companies. In addition to the JKRBT, an improved breakage model has been developed at the JKMRC, which more accurately describes the effect of specific energy, particle size and incremental breakage caused by repetitive impacts. The validation outcomes show that the JKRBT, together with the new breakage model, generate statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional drop weight tester (DWT), but with significant advantages over its predecessor. The limitations of the DWT, specifically its lack of precision of the energy input, the lengthy time required to run individual tests and the challenges en-countered in testing small particles, have all been overcome by the JKRBT. The recent developments in the JKRBT and the new breakage model offer several prospective applications. These developments have the potential to revolutionize the ore breakage characterization in the years to come.

The importance of brown coal as a raw material is currently given by growing energy needs of Czech Republic. More than 70% of mined brown coal comes from North Bohemian Basin these days. Mining of brown coal is run in four mining locations. They are geologically different and the parameters of mining coal are quite different too. This requires a little bit different methodology of both extraction and reclamation. Methods of reclamation works in the region are given mainly by the characteristics of overburden rocks appearing in the upper horizon of recuperated localities. The difficulties of the North Bohemian mine dumps reclamation works are caused by extremely unfavourable properties of rocks poured down to the majority of mine dumps. These are mainly rocks of the overlaying strata and the rocks strata of brown coal bed. Main materials poured down to the mine dumps are sands, clayey sands and kaolin ? illitic clays. Admixtures in filled rocks consist of organic (coal) mass, siderite and pyrite. These rocks are mechanically instable with respect to the wind and water erosion and during weathering they are getting unfavourable, acid (phytotoxic) nature, due to the influence of SO3 and Al ions. External and internal dumps of open pit mines are significant part of the North ? Bohemian landscape sustained by excavation. Their as fast as possible preparation and gradual integration into ecosystem of the area is interest of both citizens of region and mining companies. The paper briefly summarizes the methodology of restoration of the largest dumps of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin and the results of analyses and evaluation of samples taken on restored localities Rado-vesice dump, Strimice dump, Ru?odol dum pand internal dump of Bilina mine. An example of modern non-tradicional restoration methods is the restoration of internal dump of Bilina mine (application of power plant stabilizer). According to observations and results of sample analyses the methods of restoration were selected to limit the erosion influence, adjust the chemical and physical composition of surface of Radovesice and Strimice dumps. The application of marlites and bentonite prevent the unfavourable weathering processes on dump surface. Compensation of Quaternary sediments was artifically formed here. The need of marlite ploughing in, application of organical substrates and vegetation preparation was proved on Radovesice dump. The conception of landscape reclamation of the largest dumps after finishing of mining, methodology of technical reclamation and well considered using of fertilizable soils are main results presented in this article.

A culture-independent approach based on 16S rRNA gene clone library was used to analyze the bacterial community change both associated to the solids and in the liquid phase during pyrite bioleaching process. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA fragments revealed that the retrieved se-quences mainly related to genus Leptospirillum, genus Sulfobacillus and genus Acidithiobacillus. During the bioleaching process, genus Leptospirillum trends to grow associated to the solids while major of genus Sulfobacillus were in the liquid fase, only accounting little portion in the solids. Genus Acidithiobacillus can grow both on the solids and in the liquid phase, but accounting high portion on the solids.

The Cu-Co ore studied here belongs to the oxide type. The oxidation rates of copper and cobalt are69.30% and 78.78%, respectively. The content of Cu in ROM is 1.34% and that of Co is 0.096%. The ore contains 4.64% carbon.Based on the process mineralogy and previous metallurgy tests, the principalprocess flow-sheet of ?grinding fines 80% -0.074mm, sulphide flotation followed by oxide flotation, and flash flotation for oxides? has been determined.The handling of carbon is determined through tests. The depressant PNL-1 depressed carbon effectively, improved the recovery of sulphide minerals and reduced the reagents consumption.The operation of the flow-sheet was also changed to better at the same time.
