"The anionic flotation of a high-iron phosphate ore from Agrium - Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations was investigated through batch flotation tests in the presence of soda ash. The flotation data were supplemented by titration of the flotation pulp with soda ash, analysis of process water chemistry, and determination of the mineralogical composition of the ore. The results of lab tests were applied to the flotation circuit design allowing the flotation plant to efficiently process problematic ores. Process control measures (pH, conductivity) were also developed.Calcium cations and sulfate anions were identified as the dominant ions present in the process water when the difficult-to-process ores are beneficiated in the flotation plant. The concentrations of calcium and sulfate ions were consistent with the presence of a small amount of a calcium sulfate mineral in the ore although an oxidation/weathering process of iron sulfide minerals present in the ore could also be responsible for the observed water chemistry and subsequent flotation problems with the ores. The latter possibility suggests that the long-term stockpiling of such ores may have a highly negative impact on the flotation process.The role of soda ash in the flotation circuit is to precipitate metal cations from the pulp thus allowing the tall oil-based collector to selectively interact with the phosphate components.INTRODUCTIONPhosphorus minerals are the main source of this element for the production of fertilizers, and the froth flotation process is the most important technology for beneficiating phosphate ores. The flotation concentrate from Agrium-Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) is transported to Redwater Fertilizer Operations in Alberta (also operated by Agrium) where the phosphate concentrate is converted into a phosphate fertilizer and other important chemical products. The KPO phosphate ores differ widely in mineralogy and phosphate grades, and are broadly divided on-site into three classes. The easy-to-float A-type ores do not pose any major flotation problems, but the B-type and “marginal” ores, which are quite common in the KPO igneous phosphate deposit, are not always readily-floatable using the current reagent suites and process parameters (pulp density, feed particle size, pH). In fact, marginal ores are presently considered impossible to process by flotation. A-type ores contain normally more than 15% P2O5 and less than 8% ferric oxide equivalent (Fe2O3). B-type ores are approximately of the same P2O5 grades as A-type ores but their iron content may reach 30% Fe2O3. Any material containing less than 15% P2O5 is rejected as waste rock."

This paper documents a field survey using long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry at the Palabora open-pit mine, South Africa, for multi-scale characterization of rock mass discontinuities. Stereomodels covering the entire mine were generated based on photographs taken from a distance of 1600m across the pit, using a series of f=20-400mm lenses. Details on the methodology used and its accuracy are discussed. Preliminary results on discontinuity orientation, persistence and intensity are presented, highlighting the effect of observation scale. The potential uses of long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry in open-pit mine and large natural rock slope environments is emphasized. The use of an f=400mm lens from distances larger than 1.5km may represent an important step forward in the geotechnical characterization of inaccessible remote rock faces.

The methyl substituted binuclear cyclometallated gold(I) complexes [Au2(?-n-MeC6H3PPh2)2] [n = 4, 5 and 6] all undergo oxidative addition reactions with halogens and, in the case of the 4- and 5-methyl substituted analogues, with dibenzoyl peroxide to give metal-metal bonded digold(II) complexes [Au2X2(?-C6H3-n-MePPh2)2]. The 4- and 5-methyl substituted digold(II) compounds on warming or exposure to light undergo carbon-carbon coupling reactions to give gold(I) complexes containing the corresponding 2,2'-n,n'-biphenylyldiphenylphosphines. The 6- methyl substituted digold(II) complexes rapidly isomerise above ca. -20° C to binuclear heterovalent gold(I)/gold(III) compounds [XAu(?-2-Ph2PC6H3-6-Me)AuX{?2-(6-MeC6H3-2-PPh2)}], containing a fourmembered cyclometallated ring on a gold(III) centre. Surprisingly, no carbon-carbon coupling could be induced for any of the 6-methyl substituted compounds, even under forcing conditions. This difference in reactivity of the 6- methyl derivative, compared to that of the 5-methyl and unsubstituted analogues was studied by ab initio calculations using a series of model compounds. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings and suggest that the key-step in the C-C coupling reaction is the partial opening of the Au(III)-P bond in one of the transition states. In the 6-methyl system this transition state is energetically inaccessible and hence no C-C coupling occurs.

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Stress induced, gravity-assisted failure processes typically dominate long before stress levels approach the strength of the intact rock (at approximately smax > 0.4UCS where smax = 3s1 ? s3 and UCS is the Unconfined Compressive Strength of the intact rock (Martin et al. 1999)). Under these conditions, discontinuities typically become clamped and the failure process becomes brittle. This brittle failure process is dominated by new stress induced fractures growing subparallel to the excavation boundary. While it is possible to identify areas with the potential for brittle failure, for example, using the general assumption that brittle failure will occur in areas at right angles to the major principal stress (Hoek et al., 1995), when the threshold smax > 0.4UCS is reached in areas around the tunnel boundary, or elastic modelling and the Hoek-Brown brittle parameters proposed by Martin et al., (1999) (i.e. m? 0 and s ? 0.11), amongst others, recent observations discussed by Everitt & Lajtai (2004), and Kaiser (2005; 2006) suggest that brittle failure processes are enhanced when structural features such as joints, weakness zones, bedding planes or foliations are preferentially orientated around the excavation boundary creating stress raisers which in turn facilitate the stress-driven rock mass disintegration process (e.g., as illustrated by Everitt & Lajtai (2004) on Figure 1b). Such weaknesses induce stress heterogeneities that thus promote tensile-spalling failure processes (Diederichs 2000). The observations suggest that stress induced damage can occur ?prematurely? depending on the orientation of micro and macro structures in situations where the known stress conditions should not yet initiate brittle failure processes. In general, when structural features (micro and/or macro), especially foliations, are present in a rock mass, the strength is effectively reduced, largely due to tensile strength heterogeneity in areas depending on the orientation of the structural features with respect to the excavation boundary. As a result, stress induced damage could occur in areas not normally considered due to the influence of anisotropy (Figure 1).

"NVI Mining’s Myra Falls Operation is a forty year old underground mining operation feeding a 4000 mtpd concentrator.The current Mill, built in 1985, was designed to process a large massive sulphide ore-body. This ore-body, known as the “HW”, contains about 50% pyrite. Value minerals are chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, with precious metals occurring in all mineral types.By 1997, mining of a new ore-body, known as “Battle-Gap” commenced. Mineralogically complex, the new orebody contains about 15% pyrite, copper minerals including primary chalcopyrite, secondary bornite, chalcocite and tennantite, combined with increased galena and sphalerite.Flotation performance generally decreased with increasing amounts of Battle-Gap ore types, with both copper concentrate quality (increased lead and zinc content) and copper recoveries being affected.Following significant metallurgical testwork, a new fully sequential copper-lead-zinc flotation flowsheet and reagent scheme was developed.This sequential flowsheet was progressively installed and commissioned during 2006.Copper concentrate lead and zinc smelter penalty contents have been reduced by some 40%, whilst increasing copper recovery by 10%.INTRODUCTIONNVI Mining operates the Myra Falls Operation near Campbell River on Vancouver Island, BC. The complex has been in operation since 1966 with mining being predominantly underground. One unique feature of Myra Falls is that the mine operates within a BC Provincial Park.In 1985, a new large massive sulphide ore-body (HW) had been defined, and metallurgically tested. A new concentrator was built based upon this massive pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite mineralization producing copper and zinc concentrates by conventional flotation methods."

"The development of high capacity adsorbents with uniform porosity denoted, MP-HMS (Mercaptopropyl – Hexagonal Mesoporous Structure) using nanotechnology, and their ability to extract gold from solution, is presented. The preparation of highly effective heavy metal ion adsorbents by the incorporation of thiol moieties into the pore channels of mesoporous silica molecular sieves has been the subject of many nanotechnology research investigations. The unique feature of these nanoporous adsorbents is their ability to adsorb gold ions from ultra-low concentration solutions like mine effluent as well as from leached solutions in gold mills. The preliminary studies from laboratory simulated gold solutions show that the adsorption capacities of these materials are also among the highest reported. MP-HMS has shown the capability to adsorb 370 mg gold per one gram of the nanomaterials from Tetrachloroaurate solution (up to 37% of their weight). Experimental studies indicated that the maximum adsorption of gold (as high as 99.9% recovery). The current studies will be extended to investigate the interaction of ionic gold complexes with nanomaterials. Future development of this work may lead to either to replace the conventional CIP/CIL processes or use nanomaterials in tandem with the former, suggesting plausible use of mesoporous material in pulp, MIP or in leach, MIL, as a novel gold extraction process.INTRODUCTIONGold typically occurs at very low concentrations in ores less than 10 g/t or 0.001% (mass basis). At these concentrations the use of aqueous chemical (hydrometallurgical) extraction processes is the only economically viable method of extracting the gold from the ore. Typical hydrometallurgical gold recovery involves a leaching step followed by the separation of the gold bearing solution from the residues, or adsorption of the gold onto activated carbon adsorbent. After elution from the activated carbon the gold is further concentrated by precipitation or electrodeposition."

"Since the mid fifty's, worlwide pellet production capacity has constantly risen (Fig. 1, Ref. 1 l. There was however at that time no real incentive to decrease production costs but only to produce as many pellets as possible. State of things changed with the iron and steel market recession, starting in 1975, and is currently leading producers to improve pellet quality and to reduce fuel and power consumption.At the Port-Cartier pellet plant, the energy needed for the induration of pellets ranks first in overall operating costs. An important step was made when starting admixing coke breeze in 1980. Oil prices justified the use of coke breeze as a direct replacement in terms of dollar/ton, however, while gaining expertise in using solid fuel a significant decrease in energy consumption was observed (Fig. 2, Ref. 2).In 1985, the ""Centre de Recherches minérales"" was commissioned to undertake research work to investigate the effects of further increasing coke addition to the pellet mix. The positive results of that work led to a 1,5% coke addition plant trial during the fall of 1985. Both laboratory and industrial results are discussed in this paper."

"The self-heating facility developed at the Noranda Technology Centre [Rosenblum and coworkers, 2001; 1995] has now been established in the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering at McGill University. A research program into mechanisms has been initiated (with support now from four industrial partners under Camiro). The first investigation is into the role of pyrrhotite (Po), the most commonly suspected mineral to trigger self-heating. Following a standard experimental protocol, self-heating was assessed on samples of Po mixed with sand as an inert material. With increasing Po content, self heating progressively increased but, interestingly, the samples visually appeared less and less oxidized. A high Po content, it was hypothesized, may give a more reducing environment favouring formation of H2S. The presence of this gas could be significant as it has a high exothermic heat of reaction with oxygen. The system was modified to test the hypothesis by including copper pieces and copper sulphate to react with (and therefore reveal) the gas as copper sulphide. Evidence is presented in support of H2S production, which to our knowledge has not been shown before and introduces a potentially important avenue of investigation into self-heating mechanisms.INTRODUCTIONSelf-heating of sulphide minerals poses potential environmental and safety hazards in mining of ores, and storage and transport of concentrates. While some conditions are known to be critical, the reactions remain poorly understood making self-heating difficult to predict and control.A major advance in measurement was introduced by Rosenblum and co-workers [Rosenblum et al., 2001; Rosenblum and Spira 1995]. A self-heating assessment method was developed and applied to various sulphide-bearing materials The method is based upon automated calorimetric cells with data acquisition, now available to McGill researchers and which have been used for the study reported here."

"CONTROL STRATEGYThe Lake Dufault Division of Falconbridge Copper Limited has been concentrating a complex copper zinc ore since late 1964. An ARL X-ray on stream analyzer was installed in 1966 for process control. A Digital Equip-ment Corporation PDP8 was added in 1968 for more complete control. To improve the system the computer was exchanged for a Moded PDP-81 in 1971.The new computer is time sharing with 8K core memory and 32K disc storage. A new interface was installed to accommodate 14 X-ray streams and additional analog signals for process control. The system gave us additional capacity and flexibility to make changes in operating programs and control strategy while on line. As the computer is used for process control a modified focal language was chosen as the operating language for ease of operation. This language is more suitable for process control than for statistical work.The main components of the control system are(a) Computer(b) Interface(c) Production Control X-ray Quantometer(d) Teletype terminals(e)Reagent feeders(f) Sample SystemThe operation of the system consists in the computer selecting the various streams to be analyzed by a PCXQ Quantometer. When the flowing sample is presented to the X-ray the intensities of the various elements are read by the computer from analog to digital converter, the assays are then computed. From the tonnage and assays the computer is programmed to determine the amount of reagent added to various parts of the circuit. The computer drives the feeders via the interface for the required amount of reagent. After following a certain sequence the computer prints out the performance and control data on an ASR35 Teletype. The data is printed out approximately every seven minutes. Any des¬ired changes in the program or strategy can be made during operation via an ASR33 Teletype connected to the computer."

Uncertainty quantification of a spatially distributed variable at any scale can be handled through geostatistical simulation. Large computation time, storage, and post-processing of the realizations are required to obtain a final assessment of block uncertainty. Multi-Gaussian kriging is a flexible alternative to simulation. The idea is to compute the conditional distribution of uncertainty after normal score transformation of the original samples. Under the multi-Gaussian assumption, all marginal and conditional distributions are Gaussian, hence fully defined by their mean and variance. The parameters of the conditional distributions are obtained by simple kriging and can be back-transformed to the original units of the variable of interest. An estimate and any summary of uncertainty can be easily retrieved. The main disadvantage of performing multi-Gaussian kriging is that change of support is not straightforward, that is, calculating uncertainty of block grades. We propose a methodology to overcome this limitation by considering a matrix simulation to generate multiple probability fields. Each probability field is used to draw spatially correlated point values from the point-support conditional distributions, and multiple realizations of the average can be obtained. This permits the calculation of the average over the block and its uncertainty. These blocks may correspond to selective mining units or to volumes from longer production periods relevant for engineering decisions. They can even be disjoint blocks, such as when several faces are mined at the same time. POSTMG, a Fortran program to perform these calculations, is described and a case study is provided.

"1. INTRODUCTIONIn the past two decades, low-grade gold and silver ore bodies in the United States have been exploited by heap leaching, primarily with sodium cyanide solutions. This method has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional milling due to its low capital and operating costs. Successes have been made, particularly in Nevada, where ores are well oxidized and the climate is conducive to this method. in recent years, heap leaching has been tried in northern latitudes with some success, however, in using this method, operators face more severe limitations than do their neighbours to the south.This paper evaluates the limitations of heap leaching with particular emphasis on northern climates and introduces an alternative method to recover precious metal values in a continuous vat. This proprietory technology, known as the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig, shows promise, with improved gold recovery and potential to operate in cold climates.2. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO HEAP LEACHING?Heap leaching of non-refractory ores is subject to the following limitations:1. Minimum amount of free gold and nuggets in the ore.?. Minerology of the ore--accessibility of gold to lixiviant.3. Minimum particle size and size distribution of crushed product to allow percolation of lixiviant through the heap.4. Minimum amount of clays or clay-like slimes that can cause coating of ore particles and channelling of lixiviant.5. Minimum strength of ore particles or agglomerations to allow economic height of heaps to be built.6. Amount and suitability of real estate.7. Amount and type of precipitation.8. Ambient temperatures.9. Possible poorer lixiviant diffusion.10. Possible lower oxygen content in dissolved cyanide solution with higher heaps, particularly with ice and snow cover."

Why do we look for better reconciliation when times get tough? Why wait? Mine reconciliation should be a priority throughout the good times too. In fact, with good reconciliation, those good times are going to be even better and will help pave the way to success through those preventable bad times. Reconciliation throughout the entire mining value chain requires the capture, validation, and analysis of copious amounts of data. This task can be daunting for a team in a small mine, let alone reconciling across a suite of large mines. This paper will outline the different ways we can reconcile across the value chain, why we should reconcile over differing periods of time and how Snowden?s solution to proving reconciliation can be a simpler, reliable and transparent process. Snowden?s Reconcilor is proving to be a valuable tool on any mining scale, by capturing, validating, sorting and reporting data for timely decision making by the site geologist through to corporate management. By instigating vigorous reconciliation, you are setting your mine up for the future. "The Campbell mill has undergone numerous changes over the past 43 years. However the rate of change has increased significantly in the last 4 years. A new grinding circuit, carbon-in- pulp circuit, pressure oxidation plant, and column flotation circuit are all new additions. Other changes have occurred in the last 2 years including a large reduction in sodium cyanide consumption, and the introduction of a computer controlled grinding circuit. More improvements are planned in the next 2 years. Some of these improvements include the construction of an effluent treatment plant, and the replacement of filtering and Merrill-Crowe precipitation with carbon-in-leach and electrowinning.Recent changes and improvements to the Campbell mill are a commitment by Campbell mill personnel and Placer Dome Inc. to decrease operating costs, increase gold recovery and gold production, improve industrial hygiene and safety, and meet environmental compliance with current government legislation.INTRODUCTIONThe Campbell Mine has been and continues to be one of Canada's premier gold mines. Campbell Mine is 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Incorporated. Milling of ore commenced in 1949 at a rate of 300 tons/day producing 58,000 ounces per year of gold. In 1992 Campbell Mine will mill 1340 tons/day of ore at a grade of 0.6 ounces/ton, producing 275,000 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $205.00 Cdn./ounce.This paper discusses some of the changes that have been made to the Campbell mill in the past 4 years. The flowsheet has undergone extensive changes and will continue to change rapidly in the next 2 to 3 years. A simplified flowsheet of the Campbell mill is shown in figure 1."

Underground mining in the gold industry is gaining popularity in Nevada, and with it the use of cemented rockfill is becoming mainstream. Even with today?s high metal prices, however, mining companies are very sensitive to the margins they realize, and are constantly looking for ways to reduce costs or improve efficiencies. Given that the backfill is one of the largest cost centers in underground mining, mines are constantly under pressure to reduce backfill costs. This paper will present an overview of the factors that impact cemented rockfill quality in Nevada mines based on the authors many years of consulting experience. Cemented rockfill quality can be linked directly to binder consumption, hence programs aimed at improving quality generally result in lower binder costs, better performance in the fill (hence less dilution), and improved safety. The paper will conclude with the key elements of a comprehensive program of backfill quality assessments and backfill QA programs. Comparative laboratory and minesite data from a number of operating and proposed mines will be presented.

"Significant progress has been made over the past few years on characterizing and understanding the hydrodynamic properties of frothers and collectors and their effect on flotation performance. This new understanding of the relationship between chemistry and hydrodynamics has dramatic implications for how flotation circuits should be controlled and optimized. Previous work has shown that choosing a frother of the right ‘strength’ is critical to the optimization process, and the work and discussion presented here serve to strengthen the argument. In addition, we know that collector chemistry will also influence hydrodynamic properties and needs to be taken into consideration. To achieve the desired outcome, the overall system of reagents and operating parameters must be considered. This paper describes and discusses some of the findings from recent research on frother and collector chemistry effects (on hydrodynamics), and how this knowledge can be used to improve flotation performance. Examples from plant experience are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFrothers perform various functions in flotation but the primary ones are control of bubble size in the pulp zone and stabilization of the froth zone. Laskowski (2003) was among the first to try to capture both roles in characterizing frothers in order to provide a basis for frother selection for a given duty, as well as to explore the link between function and frother chemistry (structure). The method he used requires bubble size data and a frothing index; the procedure has been simplified by Cappuccitti and Finch (2008) using gas hold-up to substitute for bubble size, and froth height (without overflow) as the froth stability metric. The gas hold-up/froth height relationship will be referred to as ‘hydrodynamic characterization’. Essentially, the gas hold-up parameter reflects the sum of the hydrodynamic conditions in the pulp phase (water in this case), i.e. the effect of bubble size plus the apparent impact of the water surrounding the bubble due to the frother (Finch, Nesset and Acuna, 2008). Similarly, the stable froth height parameter reflects the sum of hydrodynamic conditions in the froth, i.e. the effect of bubble size undergoing coalescence plus the influence of the water in the lamellae and Plateau borders between bubbles. It could be argued that the gas hold-up/froth height relationship is a superior one to simple bubble size/froth index for discerning differences in frother behaviour"

"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northest of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The present paper will describe the methodology used to successfully prove that gold of the Detour Lake Mine ore is mostly concentrated into the fine size fraction of the blasted rocks. It will describe the various options possible to create value from this ore property.IntroductionThe purpose of this test work was to determine the grade of the pebbles and consider if there was value into discarding the pebbles and replacing the material by fresh feed.1. Pebble samplingThe pebbles were sampled and assayed for grade every day for 3 months. After 3 months of sampling, the results showed that the pebbles only carried 28% of the fresh feed grade. This phenomenon can possibly be explained by the fact the gold is located into area of fracture in the rocks.January-March 2014 – Pebble assay average• Line #1 = 0.222 g. Au/t• Line#2 = 0.275 g. Au/t• Head grade = 0.88 g. Au/t2. Crushing and grinding circuit surveysWith the above information, a grinding circuit survey was planned. The purpose of the survey was to build a JKSIMMET model of the grinding circuit for mill optimization but also to understand the deportment of gold into various size fractions that may explain why there is so little gold in the pebbles. All streams and size fractions was analysed for particle size analysis and for gold.Since Detour has dual grinding lines, both circuits were sample at the end of May. Two supplemental survey of the secondary crushers were also done and a survey of the gyratory crusher."

"Minerals processors can improve production by using the best available control technology to control their operations. Many mines use expert systems that can provide improved results over manual or basic control, but better results can be achieved using multivariable predictive control. Over the past few years, the application of multivariable predictive control has gained acceptance in many mining processes and has recently proven to be suitable for some of the most challenging processes. This advanced control technology has been successfully applied to a wide variety of processes; alumina digestion, ball mills, CCD/thickeners, kilns/calciners/roasters, heat exchangers/evaporators, and more demanding processes like SAG mills and flash smelters.This paper discusses the needs of advance control technologies in the mining industry, including the impact of these technologies on best practices for implementation and long term sustainability. Results of the multivariable predictive control applications in mineral processing are discussed, and in particular the application to the SAG mill. In addition, an example of the benefits improvement that can be achieved with this technology is presented.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a long term perception in the mainstream mineral processing industry that best advanced control solution is an expert system. There a numerous instances of expert systems used for control of SAG mills, as well as kilns or roasters, thickeners and more recently flotation circuits. Many of theses expert systems have been installed by small, independent companies or by OEMs of processing equipment. Undoubtedly these expert systems have provided millions in benefits to the owners of mineral processing plants.It is this author’s proposition that it is a misconception to believe that expert systems are the best solution for mineral processors, and that in many cases the best solution is Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC). Better control and optimal operations can be achieved through the use of MPC. Another important consideration when considering advanced control technologies is the implementation and support effort. These types of applications have been known to deteriorate, even to disuse, when they are not kept up to date with changes to the process or equipment. The audience is invited to listen to discussion and draw their own opinion. The author has been involved in installing control systems for over 20 years, advanced solutions for over 15 years, and has had privilege to consult with many miners concerning the selection and application of advanced controls over the past 6 years."

"A case study for the application of a novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of a narrow steeply dipping, gold-silver mineralized quartz vein deposit is presented. The technique is novel in two respects. First, mineral grades are kriged directly rather via the accumulation method more often applied to vein deposits and, second, a modified 2D ordinary kriging algorithm is used that allows the calculation of a single grade and variance for irregular shaped blocks of varying sizes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of this novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of the Poura mine deposit and, if appropriate, to lay a firm foundation for future geostatistical work at the mine.The reserve estimation concentrated on the remnant ore blocks and pillars in both underground and surface workings. The data, which was collected in 2D coordinates with grade and vein thickness values, was first analyzed statistically and used to compute experimental semi-variograms. Appropriate semivariogram models were fitted and various aspects of the estimation technique were evaluated using cross-validation error analysis, with acceptable results. A block kriging computer program called Krige2D was developed to implement the modified 2D kriging algorithm and calculations. Production data were not available to evaluate the computed block resources, but they were compared with a previous resource data determined using an arithmetic approach. The geostatistical technique estimated slightly higher grades but lower overall tonnages as compared to the earlier arithmetic estimates."
