During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.

The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.

In redesigning the cyanide plant at Mount Torrens, in conjunction with Mr. L. W. Grayson, the manager, several minor alterations were introduced in order to have the operations under thorough control, and these having proved serviceable may be of sufficient interest to merit a description here. The lixiviation vats, though only 8 feet in diameter, were retained, but the pipes leading away from the bottom were reduced from two inches to half-an-inch in diameter, and had a fall to the zinc boxes of about 4 feet. As these small pipes were completely filled by the solutions fiowing away from the vats, they exerted a suction equal to their fall and thus hastened the rate of flow, so that tailings containing a larger proportion of slimes could be treated than was possible where the larger pipes were used, as, there not being sufficient fiow of solution to keep the latter filled, no suction could be obtained with them. It was found that with'most of the tailings treated a sufficient flow could be obtained from the half-inch pipes when the taps on, them were only one-third to half open. The lower end of each of these pipes was connected by means on indiarubber tubing with the sille hole of 11 in aspirator bottle, and to the mouth of this bottle a few feet of similar tubing was connected, so that the solutions coming through could be directed into either of the fixed tubes leading respectively to the waste water tank the strong solution zinc boxes or the weak solution zinc boxes.In working the vats, the following method was found to give good results. While filling the vats with tailings the taps were left open, so that the water might drain off into the waste water tank the surface of the tailings was carefully levelled. When the strong solution was run in at the top, the air contained in the interstices of the tailings was forced through the half-inch pipe at the bottom as a strong blast, instead of, as I believe js usual, escaping by means of channels formed by it through the tailings, and thus tending, it would appeal, to render the disposition of the tailings less even and to make.

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. To optimise the haulage of the large tonnages produced from stopes in this high production gold mine, an ore pass and feeder system was introduced. This ore pass was designed and developed in 2006 and the plate feeder installed and commissioned soon after. Cavity Monitoring Surveys (CMS) have been undertaken of the ore pass since it was commissioned. The original thickness that was surveyed of the pillar between the ore pass and decline in 2006 was approximated to be 19 m. Throughout its use large blocks of rock were reporting at the plate feeder. This was the first indication that the ore pass was failing somewhere between the tipping level of the 9410 level and the plate feeder at the 9330. Even so CMS surveys were not taken systematically to firstly identify the area of failure or for monitoring. In August 2008 after implementing management systems, large blocks were still reporting to the plate feeder. The decision was made to empty the pass enough to carry out a CMS survey of the area. Subsequently it was discovered that the area of failure was between the decline and ore pass and that since the first survey the pillar thickness had been reduced to approximately 9.7 m. Further management controls were put in place to slow movement of the material and to limit the use of the 9410 tipping level, but this did not alleviate the rate of failure entirely. The results of an initial inelastic numerical model indicated that most of the pillar was damaged and that failure into the decline likely if no changes were made. The numerical modelling predicted that even if material was no longer passing through the ore pass interaction between the voids was unavoidable and would most likely result in instability. The ore pass and plate feeder are an integral part of the haulage system for the remaining life-of-mnie. Two solutions were sought to firstly reinforce and stabilise the pillar between the ore pass and decline and secondly to rehabilitate the ore pass or find an alternate design that could still utilise the plate feeder. This paper summarises the analysis and resulting rehabilitation that was used to accomplish this.

ON mineral lease 38 of the Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, a shaft was sunk in the early days Ior prospecting purposes and at the present time it is accessible as far as the 1000-ft. level where a connexion exists with the main workings of the Corporation's Central Mine, mineral lease 9. About the year 1895· a crosscut was driven east from this shaft at the 1330-ft. level cutting the Central Ore-body in mineral lease 9 and the shaft is supposed to extend a further depth of 25 ft; but no records of any of this work are in existence, the whole of the evidence being based on hearsay and memory:Fig. 1 shows the position of the Extended shaft in relation to the main workings. As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

Detailed petrographic analyses of coal seams from the Newcastle, Illawarra, and Lithgow Coal Measures were made for a number of localities for each of twelve seams. From these analyses characteristic standardprofiles were derived for each seam. Two broad types of profile were found; one in which vitrite-poor and vitrite-rich layers alternate, and another in which there is a steady decrease in vitrite from the base to the top of the seam. Six simulations by the Mpnte Carlo method employing both classical and geostatistical techniques are presented for the determination of the probability distribution of the in situ value of a coal seam. To avoid the problem of qualitative estimation of parameter variability in the calculation of an arbitrary seam value, only data values from borehole information were used to quantify the variation in four coai seam parameters.The method which is suggested as being the most appropriate is a particular geostatistical approach that employs the best linear unbiased estimate and the error of estimation for a number of two dimensional blocks. The results indicate that the variance of the coal seam unit value may be much higher than that indicated by the classical approach because of the spatial variability that is properly incorporated in the geostatistical approach.The model used in the Monte Carlo simulation to determine the economic value of a coal seam can be extended to incorporate all those parameters which are necessary for a true estimation of the probability distribution of the coal seam value. A time value concept for discounting can also be incorporated to optimize the economic return of a coal mining project.

Some crystal chemical properties of several apatites from Brazilian deposits and occurrences were determined; the samples had different origins (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary). The aim was to establish relationships to their froth flotabilities behaviour. Detailed X-ray diffraction studies were carried out, to determine precisely the unit cell parameters and the degrees of crystallinity of the apatite samples. A thorough chemical analysis of these minerals was also conducted. Microflotation studies were carried out, using sodium oleate and dodecylammonium chloride as collectors. The crystallinity levels were determined for all samples studied, with the establishment of a crystallinity index, which varied from 10.0 to 4.5, on a normalised scale. A marked dependence was observed between this crystallinity sequence and flotability; for both collectors, flotability dropped drastically for crystallinity indices lower than 8.0. Also, the low crystallinity apatites showed a decrease in floatability, for longer conditioning times.

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

The Ok Tedi Project is now a high production open-pit porphyry copper mine located in the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea (PNG). At present, total daily production is 190 000t of ore and waste. Large scale drilling and blasting has only been in operation since 1988, prior to which all material was removed by ripping and dozing. This paper reviews the steps taken over the last 12 months in establishing a more efficient drilling and blasting operation and highlights the significant reduction in powder factor. These improvements have been achieved largely through the introduction of air-bags, controlled pattern expansion and an overall focusing on the operation by involving consultants, ICI's technical service and internal departments.

Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.
