Hot briquetting is a reliable, fully developed industrial concept for the passivation of direct reduced iron produced with the various processes of direct reduction. During hot briquetting, the large specific surface area of direct reduced iron is drastically reduced, and therefore the well-known problems caused by reoxidation and overheating are avoided. Even the shipping instructions published by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) confirm that Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) can be handled and shipped without special precautions. From the mid-1970s until today, after extensive pilot testing of the technology, a number of industrial plants for the hot briquetting of direct reduced iron have gone into operation. Additional hot briquetting plants for already established but also for new direct reduction processes are tinder construction or in different stages of planning. This paper describes the characteristics of HBI and its current industrial application for various Direct Reduction Processes.

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

Before presenting this address I desire to express my appreciation of the honour which has been conferred on me by my election as iPresident of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. At this stage it might not be out of place to recall that Broken Hill was the birthplace of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, originally formed as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers in 1893.In selecting for my address the topic of "The Broken Hill Mining Industry and its Contribution to the Economy of Australia" I realise it is impossible to cover fully every aspect of the nation's economy which owes all or part of its origin to the Broken Hill field. Nevertheless, I feel that some attempt should be made to give credit to the Broken Hill mining industry for its part in the progress which Australia has made over the past seventy years.. If we care to reflect for a moment it soon becomes apparent that, not only is the Broken Hill mining industry an important producer of base metals for domestic and overseas consumption, but its profits have provided the means whereby many of Australia's leading secondary industries have been established or built up. Examples which come to mind are the founding of the iron and steel industry by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company; the establishment of plants at Port Pirie in South Australia, and at Risdon in Tasmania, for the production of metallic lead and zinc; and also at Port Kembla for the smelting of copper ores. A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.

An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the 'Mo-granites', and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the 'Mo-granite' belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. This paper describes the excavation of No. 1 Power Station Lift Shaft at the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Project. The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. A hoisting rope is passed through the borehole, and is attached to a platform on which the rising crew are raised with their equipment to the drilling position in the rise.When properly planned, the method is particularly safe, and has generally received the approval of mine inspectors and safety authorities. A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

The mining industry has recognised for some time the importance of supporting programs which serve to educate the Australian public about the socio-economic benefits of mineral resource development. More recently, industry leaders have realised that the future development of the industry will depend on attracting sufficient young people to commit to a career in the industry. Apart from lending support to the traditional education institutions in Australia, the industry now has the opportunity to participate in the development of education programs in museums. Whilst historic, mining-related theme parks such as Sovereign Hill and Coal Creek in Victoria serve very effectively the objective of relating past mining activities to the socio-economic development of Australia, there still exists the need to provide a facility which, under the same roof, excites interest in geology, mining, mineral processing and the role of minerals and energy in modern society. The redeveloped Geological and Mining Museum (the "Mining Museum"), which is located in The Rocks area of Sydney, meets this objective. With the central themes of formation and transformation this new Museum, which aims to be the best of its type in the world, will use modern museum exhibit techniques and the resources of the Minerals and Energy Information Centre to educate the community including teachers and school children. In the best tradition of museums, outstanding mineral and other collections will complement a comprehensive range of interactive, high technology exhibits which will include a number of exploratory "hands on" facilities. Australian companies are joining with Government to fund this exciting new museum. There is still a need for industry professionals to realise that a modern "mining" museum is no longer just a repository for objects of mining heritage but is also an important centre which serves as an important educational and public relations interface. The Education Section of the new "Mining Museum", which is linked closely with the new Minerals and Energy Information Centre, will be working closely with appropriate mining-related Tertiary institutions to develop specific career programs aimed at secondary students who wish to pursue a career in the mineral resource industries.

The combustion of brown coals in Latrobe Valley power stations produces approximately 500 000 tonnes of solid wastes each year. This material, which includes precipitator ash, char and furnace ash, is hydraulically sluiced to large ashing ponds and the supernatant solution is ultimately discharged to the sea. There are significant operational and capital costs associated with the current ashing system. The ash produced from the Latrobe Valley coals is unique and has a wide variety of potential applications including soil conditioning, concrete and cement extenders, fillers in non-metallic materials, components of building products. In addition, with the application of appropriate technology, it is possible to extract char, sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate and magnesium metal (as the chloride) in substantial quantities from the ash. Research has been carried out to explore the prospects of these various options for ash utilisation. The research has focused on detailed characterisation of the ash material and the potential extraction efficiency for various species under various conditions. From this work a conceptual process has been developed and subsequent studies have been directed towards understanding variables and optimising operating regimes for product extraction. Currently, the work is concentrating on the separation of char, the development of high-grade carbon products and the extraction of sodium sulphate.

The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. Mount Read is 'situated in the county of Montagu, on 'the west coast of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland from. Remine in an easterly direction, 15 miles northerly from Mount. Lyell, and 30 miles south-east from Mount Bischoff, and is one of the mountains forming the west coast range; it rises to a height of 3890 ft. above sea level.About eleven years ago the first mineral section was taken up on Mount Read by a Hobart company, known as the Mount Reid Silver Mining Company, consisting of 25,000 shares its holding consisted of one section of 80 acres, held under mineral lease. Prospecting was carried on for some months under great disadvantages, as all supplies had to be carried up the mount from Dundas, a distance of nine miles, on men's backs, until a pack track for horses was made.The track rises 2500 ft. in the first five miles, and then falls 200 ft. from that point to the mines, which are at an altitude of 3000 ft. above sea level, and at a point about two miles westward from the summit of the mountain, approximately midway between Mounts Read and Dundas.

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. Knowledge of true block grades is obtained from a mathematical model of an orebody, simulated with sample grades normally distributed and spatially correlated according io a spherical semi-variogram model.The superiority of kriging to the polygonal method of estimation is demonstrated on this modelled deposit by comparing the true values with the kriged and polygonal estimates obtained from sampling the deposit. Finally, selection of blocks of the deposit on the basis of the estimated values, shows that if kriging is used, what is predicted is largely mined, whilst if the polygonal method is used large biases can occur depending on the position of the cut-off grade.

The polymerisation of silica is found to interfere with thickening of leach pulps at Risdon. Hydroxyl ion and fluoride ion are catalysts for this reaction. Stability may be obtained by the presence of aluminium or ferric iron.INTRODUCTIONAt Risdon it has been a matter for satisfaction that, although the concentration, of silica in leach solutions is appreciable, it has ,given relatively little cause for anxiety.However the margin of safety is small and some intermittent difficulty in thickening leach residues during the last few years has prompted a further investigation, certain parts of which are described here since they may be of general interest.Leaching and ClassificationThe method of leaching which is practised at Risdon has been described in, two previous articles, by W. C. Snow (1936) and S. W. Ross (1949) to whiCh the reader is referred for detail. Continuous leaching is practised, the circuit solution flowing through five air agitated pachucas in series, to tlie first of which calcine is added. The circuit solution, which also enters the first pachuca, consists of spent electrolyte from, the electrolytic cells and contains 90 -gm. of free sulphuric acid per litre. About 80 per cent of the solublezinc oxide is extracted from the calcine in the first pachuca, at a pH value of 1-1 (7 gm.H2S04/1 at 55 to 60°C. In the later pachucas the leaching rate decreases sharply. The leach pulp which leaves the 'last pachuca contains an average of 17 gm. of free acid per litre, corresponding to a pH of 1.7; but, owing to variations in extraction, the end point fluctuates between 2.5 and 0·3 gm. free acid per litre (pH:> 1·5 to 2.5). The average flow through the plant is 1,250,000 gallons per day, which corresponds to a production of 300...
