Computer-controlled microscopes with digital image acquisition and analysis led to the creation of the new field of digital microscopy. These techniques not only allow a certain degree of automation but have also brought new possibilities to microstructural characterisation. One of these new and promising possibilities is co-site microscopy, which links different kinds of information obtained from different microscopy techniques. The present work presents the development and implementation of a co-site microscopy methodology that combines images obtained by reflected light microscopy (RLM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This methodology can improve the SEM analytical capacity by adding colour information from RLM. It involves the whole sequence, from image acquisition at the microscopes to the analysis of the phases using pattern recognition techniques. An automatic registration procedure for the two kinds of images was developed, allowing the adjustment of magnification, translation, rotation and pixel size, and the correction of local distortions. Thus, the images from RLM and SEM can be combined to build a multidimensional data set of each field, which can then be used in a pattern recognition approach to discriminate different phases. The methodology was tested with a copper ore sample, aiming at the discrimination of minerals that are not distinguishable with either RLM or SEM.

Australia’s ageing population means that by 2050 there will be 2.7 people of working age to support each Australian aged 65 years and over compared with five working people per retiree today and compared with 7.5 in 1970 (Swan, 2010). This means that there is going to be a greater demand on social services – for medical and aged care – from a smaller private income base. How will this gap be met? Australia is fortunate in that it has vast resources of mineral wealth; from iron ore, nickel and gas in Western Australia to the giant copper and uranium deposits at Olympic Dam in South Australia.The prospect of a meaningful profit based tax on this vast mineral wealth has been lost through Australian government’s handling of the issue in 2010 and with an industry fiercely opposed to the prospect of a mining tax. Hence, new ways of thinking are required. This paper looks at the issues facing the implementation of a novel scheme whereby Australia leases the mineral resources it extracts and thus derives income over the decades the metals are in-use in pipes, wires and structures with a premium paid for unreturned material or that used in dissipative applications. Applicable minerals could include copper, aluminium, nickel and rare earths. If Australia simply digs up and sells the metals once, the buyer becomes custodian of that resource and they benefit from controlling the future ‘above-ground’ resource stock.A complementary driver for a leasing scheme is the increasing importance of chain-of-custody following initiatives of the Responsible Jewellery Council with gold and diamonds, now with the potential to extend across commodities. The Australian minerals sector could thus position itself as a premium supplier with high social and environmental credentials.Recognising the implementation challenges, this paper includes a review of how such a system could be enforced to ensure that the metal is tracked throughout its life. It concludes with a discussion of the rates and terms should such agreements hold and suggestions for institutional arrangements for enforcing compliance.

Data is the most valuable commodity in the information age. The use of data enables productivity, opportunity, and safety in various sectors and industries. In the late 1950s, Alan Turing coined the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the ability of computing machines to think and behave like humans through simplified reasoning and logic (Turing, 1950). This concept of mimicking human behaviour is the building block of machine learning algorithms used in most AI software. The ‘learning’ aspect in machine learning requires data, that is, information on the environment or the objective, to be modelled or predicted using AI. An AI-enabled system aims to predict the unknown faster and intuitively. Intuition in software algorithms can be described as probabilistic, learned through the data that the AI system is trained on; indeed, the AI software cannot predict the future, but it can provide the likelihood of an event/action occurring, thereby enabling decisions or responses to prevent it or take action. Just as various industries have adopted AI as the tool of choice to seek new opportunities (examples: medical research, self-driving cars, financial modelling), the mining industry, too, has been receptive to embracing AI for problem-solving and maximising the value of its business.

The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

Current trends into mining iron ore have seen an increase in the exploitation of problematic orebodies that would typically be disregarded. These bulk materials cause problems within all facets of the material handling stream, from remains left in train wagons to transfer chute blockages, which can cause costly downtime to mining operations (Roberts, 1998). These problematic bulk materials are referred to as wet and sticky material (WSM) due to the adhesive and cohesive nature they possess. Their characteristics can be computationally expensive to model. With the development of discrete element modelling (DEM), in conjunction with advancement in computational power over the past decade, it is now more feasible to model WSMs into the DEM technique.This research will couple two different contact models that can represent the characteristics of a WSM. These models include the Simplified Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (SJKR) and the Easo liquid bridging contact models. The SJKR contact model is an expanded form of the classic Hertz model. This model includes the tensile forces that are in the contact zone between two bodies when they are separated, which the Hertz model failed to capture (Johnson, Kendall and Roberts, 1971). The Easo liquid bridging contact model accounts for the capillary effects and surface tension that will form between two bodies, such as that of a WSM (Soulié et al, 2006). Both of these models were coupled to give the best representation of a WSM, which was simulated using MoleculeX™ (Chen and Williams, 2017) as the software platform.Additionally, this research also investigated the adhesion of problematic iron ore samples onto impact plates under dynamic conditions. An experimental set-up consisting of an apron feeder and inclined impact plate was utilised, to gain an understanding of the way the material builds-up and the possible modes of failure that could be experienced. This was undertaken for different wall liner materials, wall liner angles and moisture contents of the iron ore samples. From this, a series of DEM calibration simulations were conducted on the experimental set-up and particle size distributions (PSD) of the iron ore samples. The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 55 km south of Charters Towers and 134 km south-west of Townsville. The gold deposit was discovered on the northern end of the Drummond Basin in 1983 and first open pit production began in 1986. Mining progressed underground in the 1990’s and gold production peaked in the early 2000’s as the main Vera/Nancy lodes were extracted, producing 330k oz in 2003 (a record at the time). More recently, as Ore Reserves and grade have diminished, the mine has had to develop innovative mining practices to maximise recovery of the remaining Mineral Resource. This has included a modified sublevel caving method against previously mined/backfilled zones. The method has been coined modified sublevel shrinkage (MSLS). Full scale trials of the new mining method have been successfully completed. This has allowed the site to revaluate the Mineral Resource and include areas into the Ore Reserve that were once deemed sterilised, adding significant value to the operation and extending its life-of-mine. This paper describes the first of two large scale MSLS trials and key operational learnings from it.

The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

The criterion for assessing the accuracy of coal reserve estimates proposed by Philip and Watson (1982) is criticized.Following Royle (1977), it is suggested that the global estimation variance found by geostatistical methods is more appropriate.This method is applied to coal data from the Bowen Basin. This shows that two factors (the inherent variability of the variable under study and the total number of drill holes) have more influence over the accuracy of the reserve estimate than the form of the drilling pattern. Comparisons between the relative errors for different sized regions demonstrate that the spacing between drill holes is of secondary importance. The dominant factor is the total number of holes.Comparisons between the relative errors show that some variables such as sulphur need a much denser sampling than the others to obtain the same level of precision.

Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the orebody.So far, the use of preconditioning (PC) with hydraulic fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving performance, while PC combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.In particular, mines commonly referred to as ‘supercaves’, operated by caving methods, have the need to integrate mine to plant processes, where rock fragmentation appears as a key tool. In fact, it implies making mining and comminution processes more efficient to the plant and for mines, it justifies the search of innovative solutions in drilling and blasting techniques to precondition the rock mass. The following paper aims to show the feasibility of numerical blast modelling to weaken the rock mass using explosives, mainly through sensitivity analysis applied to designs to minimise bias and uncertainty in the results. It is shown how the presence of structures, their geometry and in situ stresses influence or interfere with the PC method being used.From the work, it is concluded that better knowledge on the application of explosives weakening allows specialists to strengthen numerical models associated with every design and therefore previously validate their applicability, helping to understand complex phenomena such as the propagation of mechanical waves in non-elastic heterogeneous media. In this sense, it is understood that while there are studies (Sanchidrián, Segarra and López, 2006) showing that the transfer of energy in the rock mass could be even greater in a confined environment, the more competent rock mass and higher in situ stresses interfere mostly on the effectiveness of a technique using explosives.CITATION:Gottreux, I, Córdova, E, González, P and Videla, J, 2016. Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

Mineragraphy is a coined term to signify the field of microscopic investigation of ore minerals. The term is not euphonius and is sometimes regarded as superfluous because the subject is no more than an enlargement of the scope of petrology. In the past the practical field of petrology has been largely limited by the instruments which were designed for the study of rocks and' the microscopical properties of the transparent minerals. The addition of mineragraphy has been brought about by the use of the reflecting microscope and a totally different technique.The use of the petrological microscope, as it has been employed in the training oi geologists and mining engineers for nearly half a century, has been justified many times, not only in its application to general geological problems, but also in the more restricted field of the exploration and examination of ore deposits. It provides information of the gangue minerals and rocks associated with an ore body which is of great value in some mining fields. In cases where ore deposits occur selectively in certain favourable types of rock, the recognition and delineation of these rock types is a useful guide in prospecting. The Boulder Belt at Kalgoorlie forms one of the most striking examples in Australia where important significance is attached to different rock types, and the petrological microscope is essential to their elucidation.

GENERALThe lode, for purposes of description, may be said to be divided into two portions which are usually referred to as the Southern and Northern Orebodies.The southern ore-body is the larger and in places attains a width of 200 feet. The northern ore-body is, generally speaking, comparatively narrow. These ore-bodies have a northerly pitch of approximately 45' and a westerly dip of 60. In the southern ore-body a grid of ore chutes is provided at 31 ft. 8 in. (5 square set) intervals and this necessitates an elaborate arrangement of cross-cuts, portion of which have to be driven through the foot-wall. Crushed country rock adjacent to the foot-wall makes it necessary for drives to be placed at least 60 feet from the lode.In the northern ore-body the ore chutes are arranged along a longitudinal drive, thus making a much simpler layout. These layouts were described in detail by A. R. West (Proceedings A.I.M.M. No. 117). In opening up a new level from the shaft plat, a heading is extended in a westerly direction until a point approximately 60 feet from the footwall of the lode is reached.At this point the direction of the cross-cut is altered to a bearing approximately 90 to the general strike of the ore-body, and the cross-cut continued until the hanging-wall is intersected. From the information obtained together with that from diamond drilling, the outline of the ore-body is plotted as closely as possible, and this serves as a basis for the layout of the level. Drives south and north from the main cross-cut are made in order to determine the southern and northern extremity of the southern ore-body. In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is becoming available over much of the world, includingNew Zealand. Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Salaries for mining professionals have gone up substantially in the last two years across most vocations and there has never been a better time to enter the industry, in terms of career opportunities and salary packages. With so many offers on the table and companies outbidding each other to attract the best talent, many new professionals are being lured in by the big money, sometimes at the expense of a satisfying career and a sustainable lifestyle. What should we consider when accepting a new position? What are our values, and how do these drive our decision making? This paper examines our core values as people and makes some observations about what it takes to really succeed in the mining industry.

Shane is enjoying his new work. Six months ago, he was stocking shelves at his local supermarket and decided to make the big move to a job in mining with more challenge and, of course, more dollars. He's been through his inductions, received his training tickets and is now working in a crew of eight underground at a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operation. There are many more systems and processes here than in his retail job, and Shane's comfortable that his safety is being looked after. He is enjoying the continually changing work and conditions, it makes the job interesting. It's taking some time to get used to the roster and he is worn out by changeover, but he gets more time with friends and family during R & R.   Generally, the mining industry has a maturing safety culture and well developed systems. This sometimes lulls people into a false sense of security. Safety systems cannot anticipate every possible situation, nor can they replace people's perception, thinking and decision-making. To manage safety, it's critical to find the right balance between dependence on systems and a healthy fear and respect of risks we face.   As safety standards are raised, systems tend to get more thorough and complex. When a new person joins a mining crew, we induct and train them to provide the information they need. As labour availability again becomes short, and many new people join our industry, we shouldn't assume they know the fundamentals. We need to explain not only what they are expected to do, but why doing what we ask and expect will keep them safe. We must equip people to deal with both the routine and the unexpected.   This presentation explores the challenges of balancing a structured, systematic approach to safety with the need to also equip people to deal effectively with risks everyday in dynamic and extraordinary situations.   Session purpose Introduce participants to a way of looking at risk from a different perspective, as a force for change and progress, if managed well. Demonstrate that risk is something we need to engage with emotionally as well as physically, if we want our risk management efforts to be successful. This purpose will be achieved through an entertaining and engaging presentation, using photos and case studies. The session will initiate interest to explore new ways of thinking about risk and generate discussion about the balance between people and systems. What is the right balance and why getting it right enhances the safety culture, while getting it wrong can impact on safety, business performance and sustainability.

Although much talked about, social licence to operate (SLTO) is a relatively new concept that has been deemed as one of the four biggest business risks to a mining project over the life-of-mine. There is no accepted single definition of SLTO and this author understands SLTO to be stakeholder perception of the legitimacy of a project, a company or an industry. At a specific site, and across different sites within the same organisation, SLTO ranges through different levels according to stakeholders’ degrees of acceptance in time and space. Management of SLTO is vital for the mining sector but is difficult as it is informal and intangible. Although there are no key performance indicators, there are certain indicators that enable relative measurement of the ‘level’ of the SLTO. Because of the importance of the SLTO, information management during the entire life-of-mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, becomes crucial for the continued operation of a project.
