All previous attempts to cut rock in boring by means of revolving steel cutters have failed, chiefly in consequence of the mis-shapen teeth grinding the rock and themselves simultaneously, until, after a very few revolutions, the points of the cutters were so worn that it was impossible to force them into the strata. The diamond drilling plant being cumbrous, complicated, and costly, and seeing that fully 70 per cent of the boring generally needed is in what is known as the" milder strata," it will be readily understood that much of the work done will not pay a dividend on the outlay, so great is the cost of removal, the wear and tear of the machinery, and the loss of diamonds. The Calyx Drill, however, invented by Mr. F. Harley Davis, has been constructed so as to overcome these difficulties, and will penetrate quickly and .at a low cost this 70 per cent. of the milder strata. The Drill has taken ten years' hard work and thought to bring it to its present state of perfection, and it will now drill with steel cutters the 70 per cent of the work performed by the diamond drills at a greater speed and at about one third the cost of the latter.The utility of the diamond drill for certain work is undeniable, but it cannot by any means be described as a machine of general popular usefulness that is to say, it is quite beyond the reach of the great masses of mankind.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.

The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

BHP's two million tonne per annum nominal capacity Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia is based on FINMET¦¦ direct reduction technology. The FINMET¦¦ process produces direct reduced iron (DRI) by reacting fine iron ore with reformed natural gas in a series of fluid bed reactors and then hot briquetting this DRI into dense, high quality iron briquettes. The Port Hedland HBI project represents a major investment in the chemical processing of Australian minerals to higher value products prior to export to Asian markets. This paper describes the FINMET" process and technical aspects of the high-quality HBI product, and provides an update of the current status of the project.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. The Macraes Gold Project, operated by GRD Macraes Limited, engaged GRD Minproc Limited to assist with the evaluation of a pressure oxidation circuit, this being the key component of a recovery enhancement project. The initial study gave sufficient confidence in the process to enter into project execution. GRD Macraes Limited was the first company to license Newmont Mining Corporation's pressure oxidation technology, which aims to improve gold recovery from the carbonaceous sulfidic flotation concentrate. This paper outlines the fundamental chemistry of the process followed by a description of the plant that was ultimately installed. A summary of the commissioning is given together with an overview of the production results to date. The project ramp-up was rapid, with design temperature and throughput being achieved within days of hot commissioning. Gold recoveries have exceeded expectations, improving from around 70% prior to the installation of pressure oxidation to above 84%. The project has increased the nominal gold output at Macraes from 120,000 oz/y to 170,000 oz/y. On-going plant optimisation for process parameters is discussed, giving rise to flexibility in gold production, with key controlling parameters exceeding design.

While there is no specific obligation on the part of any applicant to consult directly with tangata whenua (people of the land), recent cases highlight the need to engage in active consultation in order to avoid serious objections and delay, particularly where a proposal may affect the matters referred to in section 6(e) (Waahi tapu/sacred places) and 7(a) (KaitiakitangaiGuardianship) of the RMA.   The Environment Court has shown some sympathy for tangata whenua where waahi tapu and other significant matters of cultural concern are at risk because of a proposed development. There are several practical steps that can be taken to minimise the potential for serious objection including: ò knowing who to contact and how to contact them; ò demonstrating empathy for the concerns of tangata whenua; ò engaging in proactive consultation, for example meeting at a time and a place that is suitable to tangata whenua, and a preparedness to meet the costs of tangata whenua etc; ò demonstrate an awareness of tangata whenua issues; being aware of the types of mechanisms that are available to remedy, avoid etc adverse effects on matters of concern to tangata whenua.

For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. THE slide-rule, as a quick and convenient instrument for performing approximate calculations, is steadily growing more and more into favour with the engineer, and results obtained by it are considered close enough to enable him to satisfactorily dealwith a considerable portion of his work. To the surveyor, however, whose ordinary computations must be as precise as his measurements, the present makes of rule are insufficient, except for a very narrow margin of the scales and for rough work. Few will carry the rule when they can clearly see that it is unreliable for general routine, and the careful surveyor is inclined to look askance at those who do use it, recognizing the temptation there undtmbtedly must be to push it into work that the log book should be called upon to treat. From the fact that a surveyor's duties take him on the surface in all weathers, and underground in many wet and uncomfortable places, where the manipulation of a book of mathematical tables becomes both awkward and patience-trying, an efficient slide-rule must offer the mbst transparent advantages. Again, a surveyor being specially trained to read divided scales quickly and accurately, the slide-rule must commend itself as an apt addition to his outfit.

Antimony ore samples (mean assay 18·7 per cent antimony) from Endeavour Inlet, Marlborough Sounds New Zealand, were tested for upgrading by flotation to a saleable product (60 per cent antimony).The effects of activating agents, collectors, frothers, pH, conditioning time, and particle size on the recovery and grade of a stibnite flotation concentrate were determined using HaIlimond tube and laboratory flotationcell test apparatus. Optimum flotation conditions for the ore were thereby established. A stibnite concentrate grading 63 per cent antimony and an overall recovery of 90 per cent is obtainable in a two-stage process.

A slag-metal equilibrium study of the system SnO-FeO-(Si02+Al2O3)/Sn-Fe was carried out at 1250°C. The distribution coefficient, k =(Sn/Fe)metal X (Fe/Sn)slag was found to range from 246 for an iron contentof 0·53 per cenrt in the metal to 82 for an iron content of 6·4 per cent. The value of the ratio ?SnO/?FeO was calculated and found to be approximately a function of per cent SnO in slag alone in the region (Si02+Al2O3)/ FeO = 0·4 to 1·2. Comparison with other published work suggests that the addition of CaO to slags having (SiO2+Al203)/FeO ratios of about 1·1 raises the value of ?SnO/?FeO...

The need to hoist increasing loads from great depths is leading to the more general adoption of winders of the Koepe and Blair types. The trend has introduced a number of new problems in winding ropes, more particularly in the Koepe system where regular destructive tests during the life of a rope are not possible. Consequently, the importance of introducing non-destructive tests is much greater, especially so in the case of Koepe ropes used for deep winding where there are three major destructive fatiguing influences. These are rotational effects when a vertical rope is changed end-for- end each trip, the much greater range of stress to which the rope is subjected each trip as compared with drum winding, and the destructive effect of a high coefficient of friction between wheel and rope. A plea for a lower coefficient in the interest of better rope and tread life, substantiated by analysis, is made for Koepe winders operating at depth.Co-ordination of rope testing with general hoisting problems is stressed and the active participation of the Wire Rope Committee of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. in the promotion ofthe project is noted.The general introduction of a rope testing programme in Australia, personnel requirements and some local basic research in the subject to cope with future demands are considered.

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.
