THE Fletcherville Furnace was built in 1864 and 1865, making its first blast from August until October of the latter year, when it was blown out to prevent its "bunging-up." Repairs were made in time to enable it to be blown in again December 12th, 1865, the blast ending October 7th, 1866. Total product 1921.15 tons iron, an average of 6.8.2.5 tons per day, from ores yielding 44.8 per cent. Consumption of charcoal 223.2 bushels per ton of iron. The furnace journal up to this time shows no record of furnace dimen¬sions, or temperature of the blast, but as near as can be ascertained, they were as follows, viz. Height of stack, 42 feet. Diameter of bosh, 11 feet. Angle of bosh, 7 1/2 inches to 12 inches rise, about 58°. Diameter of open tunnel head, 42 inches. Number of tuyeres 3; each 3 inches in diameter. Dam 15 inches high. Tuyeres 24 inches high. Tymp 22 1/2 inches high. Diameter of steam cylinder, 20 1/4 inches. Stroke 5 feet. Diameter of blast cylinder, 64 inches. The engine is direct-acting horizontal non-condensing. December 26th, 1.866, the furnace was again put in blast, having been considerably altered in the crucible; the height of stack, bosh, and tunnel head remaining as before. Six tuyeres were put in, three in each of the side arches. The hearth or crucible was rectangular in form, 3 feet wide x 32 feet long x 62 feet high. Inclination of bosh 58°. Height of tuyeres 26 inches ; nozzles 2 1/4 inches diameter. Temperature of blast estimated to be about 500°.

At the Armatcuk mine in Turkey, various modifications of sublevel methods have been tried during the last decade in an effort to eliminate gob fires, dangers from roof falls, and surface subsidence, and also to increase extraction efficiency. From the experience thus gained, it was decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits, considering the existing geological conditions and coa1-seam characteristics, was hydraulic stowing. This paper examines trends in the working techniques of hydraulic stowing and discusses the favorable results and technical problems that the method produced at Armutcuk. The Armutcuk mine, a subsidiary of Eregli Coal Mines (EKI), produces 1300 tons of run-of-mine coal daily from thick (about 10-90 ft) and highly dipping (about 50-90°) coal seams. The coal is highly volatile with good coking properties that make it highly suitable for industrial use. Most of this coal is used in the iron and steel industry at Eregli on the Black Sea coast. Complete recovery of the coal is of vital importance to industrial development and progress. Initial coal extraction was carried out by means of a sublevel mining system modified to accommodate local geological conditions and coal seam characteristics. This method is similar to that employed in metalliferous mines. Several problems arose from the application of the method, one of them being the prevalence of gob fires which caused periodic shutdowns in some sections. To achieve maximum coal extraction with minimum dilution, to eliminate gob fires and surface subsidence, and to reduce fatal accident rates, a decision was taken to change from this method to a hydraulic stowing system. The pres- ence of large deposits of conglomerate and sandstone on the surface contributed to the decision to employ this new method. Although hydraulic stowing practices have been carried out in America and Germany, Upper Silesia may, so far as coal is concerned, be considered the birthplace of the method. Here the process was adapted to thick coal seams on a large scale to reduce dangers from gob fires and damage from surface subsidence. Today, the mining system is not only widely used in the coal mines of France, the Saar, India and Poland, but has also been successfully applied to the iron ore and potassium salt mines in Russia and Germany. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field, the most western outcrop of the North Anatolian coal basin, extends for five miles along the Black Sea coast (Fig. 1). The Armutcuk Mine is situated on the southern boundary of the coal field about 40 miles from Zonguldak and about 12 miles from Eregli. The history of coal mining in the North Anatolian coal basin goes back more than a century. Mining commenced on a small scale in the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field in the late 1880's, and from this time until nationalization in 1940 the mines were operated by private Turkish and foreign interests. In 1940, Eregli Coal Mines was established to takeover the management of these enterprises. The Armutcuk Mine was developed for the first time in the mid-1940's. Since then it has been in continuous production and it now produces an annual 440,000-ton run-of-mine output from which 320.000 tons of salable coal is obtained. MINE GEOLOGY The carboniferous inlier of the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field crops out over an area about three miles long and one mile wide. The major part of the inlier consists of the Namurian formation with only a relatively small area of Westfalian-A visible on the surface (Fig. 2). I WAS asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day's labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman's point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer's effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had- pot yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man's reason for coming, what' grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a fair deal is all the man wants.

Bench scale beneficiation studies were made on Idaho dolomitic phosphate rock using the TVA carbonate flotation process. The process used diphosphonic acid as a phosphate mineral depressant and fatty acid as a carbonate mineral collector. Silica was subsequently rejected as float using an amine collector, with phosphate product recovered as the sink fraction. Two samples of prepared flotation feed from commercial operation were used. One contained 21% P205 and 3.2% MgO. The other contained 26% P205 and 1.8% MgO. The results indicate that concentrates containing 31% to 33% P205 and 1% or less MgO can be obtained, with about 80% P205 recovery.

There have been major changes in the makeup and nature of the uranium exploration industry in recent years. Significant price increases precipitated an increase in exploration activity-according to the Department of Energy, exploratory drilling in 1977, by 140 companies, was almost 8 million m (26 million ft). This represents a 37% increase over the prior year's drilling. Projections for 1978 indicate at least 9 million m (30 million ft) of exploratory holes will be drilled in the US. Exploration expenditures in 1979, including land acquisition, drilling, and other costs, were estimated by DOE at over $236 million. Domestic expenditures for 1978 are estimated at over $250 million.

Industrial minerals enjoyed a fairly successful year in 1978, despite the sluggish economy, inflation, and environmental restrictions. A glance at US Bureau of Mines statistics shows that, in general, production of industrial minerals increased from + 1% (salt) to as much as 26% (sulfur, other than Frasch or recovered). A few industrial minerals showed a decline; fluorspar production, for example, registered a 23% decrease in 1978 from 1977 due to the closing of three domestic mines. Bromine, natural sodium sulfate, Frasch sulfur, and vermiculite also had production decreases of 2-6% in 1978.

THE sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific inves¬tigation, both knew what work was needed, and how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends; who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. Thomas Messenger Drown was born March 19, 1842, at Phil¬adelphia, Pa. His parents were natives of New England; and. he was the youngest of their three sons. THERE has been considerable controversy regarding the structure and mineral constituents produced when iron ore is sintered. This investigation was undertaken in order to establish the fundamental reactions that take place in the sintering process by determining the nature of the resulting minerals. The writer's immediate interest in the subject arose mainly from the request of E. W. Davis for information based on a microscopic study of sinter submitted by him in May, 1926. In the author's preliminary work, samples of iron-ore sinter were secured from the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station and from commercial plants. These were polished by the usual methods for polishing opaque ores. In order to study these surfaces satisfactorily, it is necessary to magnify them rather highly, a range from 100 to 1000 dia. being used. For the higher magnifications oil-immersion lenses and an intense source of light are necessary. After the preliminary study had shown the problems involved, a series of small samples were sintered under carefully controlled conditions and with analyzed materials. Variations in the relative amounts of ore, coal and water were made in order to study the effect of each constituent. The attempt has been to arrive at a clearer understanding of the sintering process and the reactions involved without reference to any preconceived notion as to sinter. It is clear that the study of polished surfaces has yielded results not possible with thin sections alone. The thin sections made in this work were found unsatisfactory at magnification greater than 75, whereas magnifications of 1000 were easily studied with reflected light on carefully polished surfaces. A rather complete statement of observed facts is made so that the reader may form his own conclusions. The writer's interpretations are suggested.

AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

THE work performed by the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permanent value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions."

In engineering in general, close agreement between theoretical predictions and structural performance is rare—this is particularly true in rock slopes. Since the complexity of natural arrangements makes exact theoretical solutions of associated structural problems almost impossible, the role of theory should be that of developing guides or markers to which observations and experience can be related. The author in this paper has outlined the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Some important practical considerations result—especially in regard to horizontal stresses—when theory is compared with full-scale experience. In the field of engineering activity, specific examples of close agreement between theoretical prediction and structural performance are rare. Particularly is this so for the case of rock slopes, where, owing to the complexity of the natural arrangements, it is quixotic to expect exact theoretical solutions to the associated structural problems. The role of theory is rather that of developing signposts or guide rails to which observations and experience can be related. It is with this in mind that the present paper has been prepared; the author's aim has been to set out briefly the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Despite the idealization of the problem, it will be seen that the theoretical conclusions are in accord with full-scale experience, particularly as far as horizontal stresses are concerned, and they point to some important practical considerations. CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK SLOPES At the risk of over-simplification, an attempt has been made to classify the problem of rock slopes into three broad categories with respect to internal stress systems. These are illustrated in Fig. 1. It is tacitly assumed in this classification that the strength of individual particles is very much greater than the interparticle strength whether the particles are the crystals of an igneous rock (Case I) or the blocks of Cases 2 and 3. The Homogeneous Monolith: This case is representative of uniform unjointed rock. Under relatively low stress conditions the internal stress system may approximate to that of an elastic body as given by Terzaghi.' It is more usual, however, for overall stability, to consider the material as a rigid plastic which yields in shear when S =C + c tan 4> where S is the shear yield stress, o is the normal stress on the surface of failure, and C and d are empirical constants according to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion of failure. Sokolovsky has recently developed, for the first time, a series of mathematical solutions to problems involvinga C, mass subject to self-weight. He demonstrates that for such a case a semi-arch (Fig. 2) is stable. A corollary of this argument is that for a true C, d material a curved overhanging slope is possible and such an observation may well aid field identification of these materials. The shape of the curved slope face is however directly dependent on the C-value, and from the long-term point of view this is a most difficult value to establish with any degree of confidence. It is customary to measure C and 0 in some form of shear test—usually a triaxial compression test—on core specimens sampled from the rock, and as far as the author is aware the present case is the only one in which, as far as overall stability is concerned, such tests are

As in preceding years, the most intensive drilling activity during 1934 took place in the old fields of the western part of the Polish Carpathian petroleum province (district of Jaslo). The number of wells completed to the end of 1934, expressed in percentages, is as follows: Jaslo district, 57 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 27; Stanislawow district 8 and Boryslaw fields only 7 per cent. The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. Discussion of the paper of R. J. COLONY, presented at the New York Meeting, February, 1921, and issued With MINING AND METALLURGY No. 169, January, 1921. R. J. COLONY (author's reply to discussion).-The work of Sosman and Merwin on the system lime-ferric oxide, mentioned by Mr. Rankin, was not overlooked. When studying portland cements and portland-cement clinkers petrographically, however, the lime-iron compound was difficult to correlate with the very definite dicalcium ferrite described by those investigators, which possesses such well-defined optical properties. In portland cements, the calcium ferrite (or ferrate?) is an indefinite, fuzzy, and generally amorphous, or apparently amorphous substance that is distributed interstitially with respect to the other grains, from which it was very difficult to derive any satisfactory results. For this reason, the writer, tentatively, chose to regard it as related to the aluminate, and assigned to it the composition 3CaO.Fe203, which may be incorrect, however, as Mr. Rankin suggests.

THIS investigation was carried on by means of models and the applica-tion of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimensions. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in- bed B, a 3/8-in, bed C and two 1/8 -in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at ±2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back 1/4 in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious ,reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft, and no artificial support. Fig. 2(A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure where breaker and face props were used. The props were exceptionally strong, being of steel 1/8 in. square in cross section, and capped with 1/16 in. ± of soft wood and paper, to allow for roof deflection. The face props were
