The design of dippers for cable shovels has essentially remained unchanged for the last 100 years. In the past 10 years, shovel manufacturers have started taking another look at dipper design, resulting in changes that have borne models from major manufacturers that address some of the wear conditions and material retention problems that dominate maintenance and operational costs. However, with the exception of added lateral curvatures to the front and corners of the dipper, the geometry is essentially unchanged. This paper looks at the criteria that have resulted in the first new cutting dipper design in a century. The design is based on kinematic considerations, reflected in a revolutionary geometry that matches the range of motions of the shovel, designed to minimize wear, impact loading and power required to dig, thus maximizing productivity for a minimum energy requirement. The shape configuration is such that the weight of the dipper is reduced through wall thickness, enabling a larger capacity dipper to be conceived for the same shovel. Benefits are reflected in reduced operational and maintenance costs and increased productivity.

The Washington, DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has implemented facility planning for the Anacostia River Projects portion of a program to bring its Combined Sewer System (CSO) into compliance with federal water quality regulations by 2025. The program includes approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) of deep CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief soft ground tunnels, construction, vortex drop, overflow, maintenance and air release shafts, as well as near surface diversion structures and conveyances. The Project encompasses major technical and non-technical challenges including completion under a federal consent decree schedule, construction within the confines of heavily developed urban areas, difficult ground conditions, major infrastructure crossings, and close coordination with several major public agencies. This paper discusses the planning stage considerations related to the geotechnical investigation program, discusses obstructions that influenced alignment selection, and provides two examples of preliminary estimates of settlement induced ground movement due to the tunnel and shaft construction.

It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

The role of dedicated operational support in the ramp-up and stabilisation of the FeNi-II furnace for ferro-nickel production at PT Antam?s smelter located in Pomalaa, Indonesia is described. The furnace was uprated to 32MW capability in a rebuild performed in 2005. This primarily involved installing a larger transformer, coupled with adoption of HATCH water-cooled copper plate, waffle and flanker coolers with integrated metal and slag tapblocks, HATCH air-cooled copper fin lower sidewall cooling and HATCH vertical sidewall binding system ? ?holddowns?. Following a smooth commissioning period, the progress in attaining the preliminary ramp-up target load of 24MW is described. This initial target was set by Antam, subject to some prevailing smelter equipment constraints, particularly kiln capacity. Stabilisation of the furnace operation is discussed, together with some of the specific commissioning and operational challenges surmounted by the joint Antam-HATCH team. These included: ?Mastering furnace integrity monitoring and operation with copper coolers, especially metal tapblock planned maintenance and repair strategies; ?Transition from traditional ?immersed electrode? to ?brush-arc? mode of operation approaching as closely as possible to the productive ?shielded-arc? mode of operation within existing equipment constraints; ?Reductant selection and control issues; ?Utilising the sophisticated furnace monitoring to provide detailed indication and warning of potentially destructive furnace upset conditions such as Si reversion and CO boils.

Coal mines in the eastern US often use sloped shafts as production beltways for ore removal, as means of access for supplies, and for ventilation. These structures are usually completed with the help of a contractor. In late 2011, Frontier-Kemper Constructors was engaged to build a slope for a coal mine in southern Indiana. Although the site was located in familiar Illinois basin formations, the geology proved to be very difficult. This paper describes some of the challenges faced during excavation of this slope and the methods used to overcome them, including changing the method from conventional drill and blast to cutting with a continuous miner.

Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills A[O] or B[O] holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.

The use of aircraft to support blasting operations in mines, quarries and construction sites goes back to the early days of aviation. Invaluable at times, aircraft use has been limited by cost, the unpredictability of weather impacts and other factors. Recently several technologies have matured to open up a new way to acquire aerial data with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly called drones. Equally important, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has recently implemented an exemption process and rulemaking to implement the commercial use of UAS into the United States’ National Airspace. The skies are opening for many applications of UAS. The most notable may be photogrammetry, which is the science of making measurements from photographs, especially for determining the exact positions of surface points.

The use of a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnel of approximately 12 to 13 m (40 ft to 43 ft) diameter for transit systems to house both light rail or subway tracks in a stacked configuration is an advanced concept that allows significant savings in construction cost and time while reducing, to a large extent, the negative effects on the environment. This solution, similar to the recently completed Barcelona Metro Line 9, integrates station platforms, train storages, crossovers, bypass tracks, ancillary areas and utility corridors inside a single tunnel. Each of the underground stations consist of a cut-and-cover entrance structure and ventilation shafts, that also serve as emergency exits. The excavations for the station structures and shafts can be done on one side of the street with nominal impact on traffic and utilities.

"Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors, including depth of cover, pillar sizes, panel dimensions, geological setting, mining height, proximity to gob, intersection type, and size of the gob. How does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition? Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward, side, or rear loading? Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts? If not, will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel; specifically, it explores data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall panels. Due to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries, the borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first longwall. However, they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement, a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5 mm of roof deformation. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 meters. Localized pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as was an increase in water in the entries. In addition to the observations and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder design. ITASCA Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bleeder entries. The results of the models indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panels. These models showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries—about 80% development and 20% longwall extraction. The FLAC3D model showed very good correlation between modeled and expected gateroad loading during panel extraction. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. Six different types of quartz and quartzites used as raw materials by ferroalloy plants have been investigated with respect to their thermo mechanical properties. In order to investigate the effect of the thermal shock caused by the rapid heating of quartz when it enters the furnace, the following techniques have been used for both in situ investigations and investigations of pre-heated quartz: -Heating stage microscopy for in situ observation of heating effects. -Shock heating of quartz in an induction furnace An optical microscope-mounted heating stage was used for in situ observations of the microscopic effects of heating up to 1300 ºC. The effects of heating were observed at different temperature intervals in different samples. The main temperature intervals were below 573 ºC and above 1000 ºC. The cause of the observed effects is interpreted as fluid inclusion decrepitation for T<573 °C and structural implications (micro cracks, grain boundaries and remaining fluid inclusions) at T>1200 °C. Shock heating of the samples was carried out in an induction furnace to 1300 ºC for ten minutes. The effects of the heating were studied with different techniques such as direct observation during and directly after heating, optical microscopy and XRD. Combined transmitted and fluorescence light microscopy shows that the heated quartz show an opening of the grain boundaries and evenly distributed micro cracks that were not present in the unheated reference samples. In some of the heated samples, weak generation of cristobalite was detected by XRD.

Abstract The design of deep excavation pits in rock mass is dependent as well on the mechanical properties of the rock mass as for example the orientation and the type of discontinuities like bedding planes, joints and fissures, the length of the discontinuities (persistence), the grade of weathering, the strength of rock mass, and the shear strength in the discontinuities, etc., and also on the respective boundary conditions specific for the project, and here especially the geometrical boundary conditions. The basic mutual influences and interactions between these boundary conditions are explained and exemplary presented at an excavation pit with a depth of 18,5 m, situated at a slope with a surface near groundwater table. Résumé La planification des excavations profondes dépend aussi bien de la qualité mécanique du roc, par exemple la location de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance, le degré de rupture, le degré de décomposition, la dureté du roc et la résistance limitée au cisaillement de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance que des conditions limitées spécifiques pour le projet, ici en particulier des conditions limitées géométriques. Les influences et interactions essentielles et mutuelles entre les conditions limitées isolées seront expliquées et présentées à l’aide d’une excavation 18,5 m de profondeur, située sur une pente où le niveau des eaux souterraines est près de la surface. Kurzfassung Die Planung tiefer Baugruben im Fels hängt sowohl von den mechanischen Eigenschaften des Fels wie z.B. der räumlichen Lage des Trennflächengefüges, dem Durchtrennungsgrad, dem Verwitterungsgrad, der Gesteinsfestigkeit sowie der Scherfestigkeit des Trennflächengefüges als auch von den projektspezifischen Randbedingungen hier insbesondere von den geometrischen Randbedingungen ab. Die wesentlichen gegenseitigen Einflüsse und Interaktionen zwischen den einzelnen Randbedingungen werden aufgezeigt und an einer 18,5 m tiefen Baugrube in Hanglage mit oberflächennahem Grundwasser vorgestellt.

During the last few years, several authors1-6 have advanced mathematical solutions, both exact and approximate, to the pressure behavior of a well producing from a region bounded by a circular discontinuity. The most recent solutions were reported by Carter, and by Bixel and van Poollen. Varter solved the appropriate equations analytically. Bixel and van Poollen reported a numerical solution and provided correlation charts for the interpretation of flow tests; their method uses an overlay technique and is valid for wide ranges of mobility and storage capacity ratios. The mobility ratio is defined as the ratio between k/p of the two zones, and the capacity ratio is defined as the ratio between $c of the two zones. We have developed independently an analytic solution, programmed for the CDC 1604, that agreed with Carter&apos;s.&apos;1 The same differential equation, assumptions, boundary, and initial conditions were used. We ran 30 drawdowns and 30 buildups of a unit capacity ratio and of varied mobility ratios. We also varied the radial distances to the discontinuity, and the radii of drainage. We examined the results and obtained correlations that were simple to apply and useful in flow test interpretation. The results and the correlations reported here in graphical form allow the determination of the mobility of the two zones and the radial distance to the discontinuity. They eliminate the need to fit field data to a curve as is required in the overlay technique.6 Thus, the advantages of the present correlations are that they require less effort and they provide a unique answer. They also provide guidelines for selecting the parts of the flow test plot to be used in the interpretations. Moreover, the results obtained from the programmed analytic solution define the time intervals where the approximate solution reported by Hurstl and discussed by Larkin2 are applicable. Normal buildup and drawdown plots resulted in an early straight line, a long transition zone and a late (second) straight line. However, the second straight line will not occur if the drainage radius is not at least 10 times the radial distance to the discontinuity. The mobility of the imer and outer zones can be calculated from the slopes of the first and second straight lines, respectively, by the normal methods of the flow test analysis. We found that the radial distance to the discontinuity may be determined from the abscissa value for the point of intersection of the extensions of the two straight lines. Results similar to some of these were reported by Adams et aL7 The approximate solution compared favorably with the exact one during the first and second straight-line periods. However, during the transition zone, deviation occurred between the two solutions. Discussion of Figures Figs. 1 through 7 summarize the results of this investigation. On Figs. 3 through 7 there appears the equation of each respective plot. As an extension to investigations into methods of upgrading the Iitania content of ilmenite concentrate from beach sands using 100 g/day, a small pilot plant treating 23 kg/ day of ilmenite was used.In the pilot plant the iron oxide in the ilmenite was reduced to iron at 1200&#176;C using carbon (coal/char) without melting the material, using a tunnel kiln heating cycle, the charges contained in saggars, The iron was then separated from the titania fraction by ball milling, wet magnetic separation, and screening. The resulting magnetic product was high in iron (about 80 per cent Fe) and the non-magnetic product high intitania (about 70 per cent TiO2).From this trial sufficient data were obtained to enable the preparation of a flow sheet for a plant producing 62,300 tonnes/year total products, and an estimate of costs to be made. This has shown that for an estimatedcapital expenditure of nearly $6,000,000 and annual production costs of about $4,000,000, the cost per tonne of high titania product (76 per cent TiO2) would be nearly $70.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. In the past two decades, high horizontal stress has been attributed to many ground control failures. Most believe that entries parallel to the high horizontal stress is most stable and least stable when perpendicular to it. Entry stability decreases when the angle between entry and horizontal stress increases. The concept of 2-D stress shadow has been proposed for selection of proper panel orientation, often with mixed results. In this paper 3-D finite element modeling was used to analyze the stress distribution at the headgate of a longwall panel subject to high horizontal stress at various angles. It was found that the directions of induced principal stresses at the longwall face and headgate are independent of the panel orientation. The induced principal stresses concentrate or relief at headgate based on the panel orientation with respect to the directions of the induced principal stresses. Accordingly, only 3-D modeling can fully account for the effects of high horizontal stress on panel orientation. The paper illustrates in details the changes in orientation and magnitude of all three principal stresses around the longwall face and T-junction area as panel orientation changes.
