G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals Co.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. This plot is reproduced by alor in X-ray Metallography. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fezo3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. He has chosen one for the formation of Fe2O3 from FeO and oxygen which gives Fea3 activities 50 pct higher

Cyril w. Knight, Toronto, Ont., Canada (communication to the Secretary*).—Mr. Hore's paper presents an interesting summary of our knowledge of this important mineral field ; and is therefore acceptable as giving information which our Transactions did not already contain, although it presents little or nothing not made known by other writers before 1906, when Mr. Hore began work in the field as a student assistant. Contributions of this kind, however, should be made completely valuable by such references to previous work as will enable the reader to follow to their original sources the theories or conelusions stated by the author. It is quite natural, and even excusable, that a new observer should find novelty in his on observations—especially if he is not acquainted with the work of predecessors in the same field. Moreover, the independent repetition of an observation or conclusion has a distinct value as a confirmation, though it may have none as a discovery. But the publication of it, without reference to its predecessors, may place the author in an unfavorable light as either ignorant of the history of his subject, or willing to claim credit to which he is not entitled. Of the latter fault, I do not accuse Mr. Hore ; but I cannot wholly acquit him of the former. Without disparaging his intelligent work, I must point out that his paper, as it stands, might easily give the impression that he claims originality for many statements which are by no means new, and that he emphasizes unduly his own publications. Thus, his remark (p. 481) "I have described the silver-fields in a general way in my paper " (not yet published), should have been accompanied with reference to some of the numerous papers, already published, which describe these fields. David H. Browne was born June 8, 1864; at Hollymount, County Mayo, Ireland. At the age of 16, after going through the Londonderry Academy; he came to this country, and entered the University of Michigan, where he was graduated in 1885. He began his scientific practice as chemist, under F. A. Emmerton, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Co., after which he served some time as chemist at the Ludington mine, Iron Mountain, Mich. But in 1888 he went back for a year to his alma mater as instructor in inorganic analysis. Those who knew him feel sure that he would have been an efficient and popular professor; but his ardent temperament could not brook the rnonotony and confinement of the class- room; and in 1899 he went to work at the Andrews and Hitchcock blast-furnaces, at Hubbard, Ohio, where he remained until 1891, when he entered as chemist the service of the newly organized Canadian Copper Co., operating in the Sudbury district, Canada. This was the beginning of his special professional life-work. For twenty-six years he devoted himself to the numerous and complex problems successively arising in connection with the metallurgical treatment of the nickel-copper ores of Sudbury. One of his notable achievements was the development of an electro-lytic process for the separation of nickel and copper in the ores referred to. This method was successfully employed for several years; but when the Canadian Copper Co. was absorbed by the International Nickel Co., the cheaper Orford process owned by the latter was substituted. . A still more permanently important piece of metallurgical progress credited to Mr. Browne was the successful firing of reverberatory smelting-furnaces with powdered coal-a measure which had been desired, dreamed and attempted by others, but which he was acknowledged as first to put in practice on a large scale. INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. AmonG the things that will always remain to the credit of the foundry-industry is the circumstance that nearly all the research-work of practical value in daily routine was done by active foundrymen, and the results were freely given by them to the world. Moreover, while consumers felt that to them was due a more systematic and exact method of work, the foundry-men again were the first to act in the establishment of specifications under which their product should be sold. To come to more recent times, the American Foundrymen's Association has not only made an elaborate series of tests on cast-iron, and adopted tentative specifications based upon them, but, in addition, it has urged the International Association for Testing Materials, through its American representatives, to make the testing and specification of cast-iron a distinct issue. The half-hearted support first granted was greatly augmented by the rapidly-growing recognition accorded to the enormous iron-casting industry; and when the president of the American Society for Testing Materials was instructed to ask for a special commission for this purpose, Europe was ready to cooperate. During the Buda-Pesth congress, at, which America was represented by Prof. Howe, Mr. Wood and myself, it was decided to add five members to the general committee on steel and iron, whose special duty should be to conserve the interests of the cast-iron branch of the industry. America took up the work at once, and enlarged its committee to 67 members, all of whom were actively concerned in the manufacture or study of cast-iron in all of its branches. At the organization-meeting in Philadelphia, April 25, 1903, Mr. Walter Wood was elected chairman, and myself secretary; and, within a week thereafter, the sub-committees were appointed and became active at once. FOR many years there has been no book that adequately represented the present state of the art of coal preparation-an art that has been rapidly changing during the passing years, and particularly during the last ten or fifteen years. In fact, changes of preparation have been so rapid that no book could keep abreast of their progress, and even the Proceedings of the technical societies have not been able to do so. It has been the intention of this committee and of the editor to make this book as nearly up to date as possible and to make it one that would appeal primarily to operating men, while at the same time adequately showing the theory back of the many processes used. The start of the war and the increased calls upon the time of the authors selected for the various chapters have slightly dimmed the brightness of the ideal intended, but the result undoubtedly brings the practice of preparation and its literature closer together than they ever have been before. It is the hope of the committee that this book will be useful both to those whose daily work is concerned with preparation and to consumers who use the product produced at the many fine and up-to-date coal plants throughout the country, which are now producing, as they always have done, all the coal needed by this country in its greatest crisis. While the committee has exercised a general supervision over the preparation of the various chapters, all of the correspondence and edi¬torial work have been done by Prof. David R. THE recently announced run of three years, nine months and eleven days made by a. crucible steel melting furnace of the Columbia Tool Steel Co., which is claimed as a. world's record, brings forcibly to our attention the great improvements that have been made in the design, construction and operation of the Siemen's regenerative crucible- melting furnace since its introduction in this country. Credit for this advance should be given to the furnace designer, the manufacturer of refractories, and the operators of the furnaces, whose persistent efforts and intelligent co-operation in attacking the problem have resulted so satisfactorily. There are three factors that determine the life of a crucible furnace, or any other furnace for that matter : Design, nature of refractories and conditions of operation; (including the nature of steel melted) and to some extent these factors are interdependent. Thus, for instance, if a crucible furnace is to lie operated single turn and allowed to cool off considerably at night, in order to save fuel, the use of clay-brick melting holes may be advisable, since silica brick is not well adapted to endure rep eated heating and cooling. But the total life of a clay-brick melting hole is necessarily short. Again, if local conditions such as danger of flood make necessary the building of the furnace largely above ground, so that the radiation of beat is promoted, the cooling down of the furnace over the week ends, when no steel is melted, will be considerable-and the contraction of the furnace that results tends to wrack it to pieces. The character of the metal being melted affects the life of the furnace to a great extent. Low-carbon steels and steels made from iron and charcoal require higher temperatures and much longer melting tune than high-carbon steel or steel made largely from scrap; the life of the furnace will be shorter, and the number of heats melted will be much less, when such materials are melted.

Until recently, nickel laterite projects have been largely ignored, due to their supposedly higher treatment costs compared with sulphides, and to their perceived processing difficulties. A number of laterite projects in the 1970s were abandoned because of high capital and operating costs, while others experienced severe technical difficulties. Conventional wisdom had it that laterites would not be exploited until most of the sulphide orebodies had been depleted. Why then, have Australian mining and exploration companies started a resurgence of interest in the treatment of nickel laterites? It all began with the Bulong project, which has been under study since 1987, while more recently two further projects, Murrin Murrin and Cawse, have been initiated and are being fast-tracked to take advantage of the current high nickel and cobalt prices. A further project in NSW, Syerston, has also been investigated at bench-scale, but no further development has yet been announced. All these projects have the following advantages: 1. Good location near a major mining centre and,reasonably close to power, water, roads, accommodation and a developed service industry. 2. Straightforward, low cost mining. 3. Low cost of acid or sulphur. 4. Good to very good cobalt credits. In addition, there have been significant technological developments in the design and operation of high pressure autoclaves and high rate thickeners, as well as solvent extraction and electrowinning technology. This has helped to decrease capital costs and technical risks, and has allowed the development of alternative flowsheets to the existing laterite operations (Taylor, 1996).

THIS paper reports the results of the use of salt in some research work carried on during the past 3 years at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau of Mines, which is quartered in the University of Utah, whose Metallurgical Research Department cooperates with the Bureau. Only the work involving the use of salt is described. The authors wish equal credit given to J. F. Cullen, C. L. Larson, C. Y. Proutz, C. E. Sims, H. C. Neeld, R. W. Johnson, F. G. Moses, N. C. Christensen, and G. H. Wigton, who have all in some way contributed toward the success of this work. Lead Metallturgy Popularly Supposed to be Without Problems In bead metallurgy it is difficult at first to find metallurgical problems, as the prevailing conception has been that bead is so easily concentrated in its various ores and so easily reduced to its metallic form that the only progress possible is that involved in cheapening methods of mining and of reduction. Most of the problems usually considered are of minor nature and do not involve radical metallurgical changes. During the 3 years of work of the Salt Lake Station, the following classification of problems in the metallurgy of bend has been made: Those involving Oxidized Ores. 1. Ores containing only bead. s. Ores containing bead and silver or gold. 3. Ores containing bead and zinc, with or without silver. Sulphide Ores. 1. Ores of pyrite carrying some bead. 2. Ores of complex zinc-bead-iron sulphides. 3. Complex sulphides containing in addition precious metals.

In the second half of the 19th century, bimetallism progressively was replaced by gold standard. After World War I and the 1931-33 depression, gold was mainly reserved for official international transactions and internal use was restricted. Changes since 1971 have shrunk official international use of gold. International payments deficits and surpluses are now financed by Private and official credit, rarely by gold. This historical review covers evolution of: (1) internal and external private use, (2) internal official use, (3) external official use, (4) its role in the International Monetary Fund, and (5) use as unit of account. For this paper I have tried to take a longer perspective than is usually possible, and to look, even if very briefly, at the changing relationship of gold to the monetary system over the last 200 years or so. There are, I believe, some long-term trends, continuing down to the present day. These trends have seen gold replaced by some form of paper assets in one monetary function after another. These past trends may help us to understand where gold stands now, and possibly will throw some light on the future. Because it seems to me that gold in the past has performed various functions related closely or marginally to money, I have divided this rapid historical review into several sections: (1) the internal and external private use of gold, (2) the internal official use of gold, (3) the external official use of gold, (4) gold and the International Monetary Fund, and (5)gold as a unit of account.

Since its inception, the Institute of Phosphate Research has examined every promising proposal in order to find an economical, practical and environmentally sound method of dewatering phosphatic clays. The in-house development of the FIPR/DIPR process (DIPR = Dewatering Instantaneously with Pulp Recycle) would appear to answer that quest. When small amounts of fibrous materials are mixed with clay slurries and flocculent, rapid dewatering occurs. Clay solids contents of 20 to 25% can be attained by simply rolling the clay mass down an inclined screen. Higher solids (>40%) are reached by physically pressing the cake; e.g., with a belt press. Because mechanical pressing devices are too expensive for phosphatic clay treatment, FIPR has developed the "sandwich" method of simultaneously dewatering the phosphatic clays and reclaiming the mine cut, as well as a second alternate, the "median strip" proposal. Economic projections of these bench-scale alternates suggest that the FIPR/DIPR process should be no more costly than present practice, when credit is given for the simultaneous reclamation accomplished.

Significant amounts of cobalt are present in readily accessible spent copper leach solutions. The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of extracting cobalt from these solutions in a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) column. The effects of aqueous flow rate, resin flow rate, column height, and compartment height on cobalt extraction were determined. Cobalt extractions of 92 pct or higher were achieved at solution flow rates of up to 5.5 gpm/ft of column cross-sectional area and an aqueous-to-resin flow ratio of 40:1. Overall cobalt extraction increased as the column height increased, but cobalt extraction per unit of length was more efficient in 8-and 12-ftco1umns than in an 18-ft column. Solvent extraction procedures were utilized to purify and concentrate the MCIX column eluates and produce a cobalt sulfate solution containing 70 to 80 giL Co. Metallic cathodes containing over 99 pct Co were e1ectrowon from this solution. Zinc, nickel, and copper byproducts were also recovered during processing of the ion-exchange eluates. Estimated total capital cost for a commercial-scale 10,000 gpm of a spent leach solution containing 26 million. With credits for zinc, nickel, and copper estimated net operating cost was $9.36/lb Co.

THE producers of this liquid metal call it quicksilver, while the consumer generally refers to it as mercury. It is one of he seven metals that were known to the ancients. These seven were gold, silver, iron, copper, quicksilver, lead, and tin. Other metals were sometimes accidentally alloyed with some of these, but it was not until 1490 that antimony, for example, was discovered and identified as a separate metal. It is not surprising that quicksilver should have been known in ancient or even in prehistoric times, as globules of the native metal often occur in the outcrops of the ore. Furthermore, the first man to build a fire on an outcropping of quicksilver ore would probably have found globules of quicksilver in the cold ashes of his fire after it burned out. The inability to pick up the globules with the fingers would excite interest and an attempt to gather it in shells or gourds to be exhibited and traded. The ore of quicksilver is the red sulfide, cinnabar, which has been mined and used as the pigment vermilion since before the beginning of written history. In recorded history, quicksilver is first mentioned in documents by Aristotle, 384-322 B.C. Theophrastus, in 315 B.C., credited the Athenian, Callias, with the invention of methods to beneficiate cinnabar in 415 B.C. In China also there are records antedating Christ which mention both vermilion paint and the fluid metal. From these early records, it seems certain that not only was cinnabar used as a pigment in those days but also that the metal was reduced from the ore and was used for amalgamation, for gilding, and for medicinal purposes. Leaching of copper (Cu) concentrates produces elevated concentrations of Cu and acid, which makes solvent extraction (SX) processing more challenging. Maintaining extraction targets can be more difficult with higher pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, and variability of PLS Cu and acid can lead to increased chemical iron transfer. Diluting concentrate leach feeds with an existing heap leach inventory makes SX processing easier. However, considerations about how much to dilute and where to distribute the flow into the SX configuration must be carefully evaluated, given their impact on metallurgical performance. In this paper, characteristics of a concentrate leach feed are discussed, along with considerations for processing by SX. Also reviewed are pilot plant results of concentrate leach distribution into SX and plans for commercial testing. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates continues to gain interest from the industry. Treatment by smelting and electrorefining continues to dominate, accounting for ~80% of global copper production, but is faced with its own challenges (Li et al, 2017). The case for increased hydrometallurgical processing has been discussed as high grade ore deposits are diminishing, capital costs for smelting are high, and the environmental aspects present challenges for sustainable practice. The hydromet copper industry is also turning a corner as easily leachable copper oxide deposits are depleting, and excess SX-EW capacity exists in certain regions. The transition to hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates will take a bit of effort as leaching of copper sulfides is difficult and byproduct credits must be considered. Various POX leaching processes have been studied and proposed to the industry as viable practices. Of the many processes, commercial use has been practiced with the Mount Gordon Copper Process, total and partial pressure oxidation by Freeport-McMoRan at their Bagdad and Morenci, Arizona complexes, the Sepon Copper Process in Laos, and the bioleach BIOCOP™ process in Chile (Dreisinger, 2016).

Prior to 1885, the College of Engineering in the State University was under the care of such professors and instructors as were required for efficient work in the Schools of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture. The development of the coal and other important mineral resources of the commonwealth led gradually to a considerable demand for instruction in the branches more closely related to mining engineering, and a very creditable effort was made to meet this want by arranging special work in the field and in the laboratory for students of mining and metallurgy. This plan, while it gave much added labor to several already heavily taxed professors, caused such students to become something like undesirable excrescences upon the regular courses. But its partial success gave abundant proof of the real necessity for a complete course in Mining Engineering. The famous Braidwood disaster emphasized anew the importance of thorough training on the part of those to whom the responsible duties of mining must be confided. As is well known, a very excellent beginning was made some years ago by the Legislature in the matters of inspection and regulation by the enactment of a reasonably effective law, which was afterward much improved.* About the date of the last Acts, it was deemed wise to enlarge the facilities at the University arid to furnish adequate training for the increasing number of applicants. Accordingly, in August, 1885, the writer was requested to assume the duties of the professorship, it being the expressed desire of the Board of Trustees and the Regent of the University that a School of Mining Engineering should be founded which might eventually come to rank with the other engineering schools already flourishing here. A geological map of a State involves very much, and its pre sentation to the public incurs grave responsibilities. It has been for a long time my earnest desire to bring out and place before the pub lic a geological map of New York which might be creditable to the State and worthy of a place among her scientific publications. We have done much for the advancement of geological science in this State—very much, and in many directions—but unfortunately, this feature, which should have been made the basis of all our work, has been too long neglected and delayed. For twenty-five years I have been laboring and looking forward to this consummation. I have recorded the field-work, systematic and desultory, upon such maps as were available for this use; and notwithstanding their imperfec tion, I have been able to transfer this recorded information to a more perfect base, which it is hoped will be completed during the early months of the next year. In 1883 I had combined, upon a small map of the State, the in formation which we possessed at that time, and communicated the same with my annual report to the Legislature. The report mas published in the regular course, but the special appropriation made for the map was vetoed by the Governor. Not discouraged by this untoward and unexpected circumstance, I continued my work, and made every effort to render the map more complete, preparatory to its communication with the next annual report. I brought together all the information within my reach, whether published or unpublished, reviewing and revising, as far as practicable, the work done by myself and assistants in southern and southeastern New York.

This paper is a revision of a former paper published in mimeograph form by both the Canadian and American coal classification committees, and is now presented for the purpose of acquainting those interested with the present status of coal classification in Canada. The classification employed for "Customs purposes" is detailed, and the classification schemes from which the customs classification was derived are reviewed and discussed. The activities of the Canadian coal classification committee, namely, the Associate Committee of Coal Classification and Analysis of the National Research Council, is also reviewed. Reserves, Production and Uses of Canadian Coals The total coal resources of North America are estimated to be 69 per cent. of those of the world, and of this portion, the distribution is 52 per cent. for the United States and 17 per cent. for Canada. Accordingly, Canadian coal resources amount to approximately one-third of those of the United States, and one-sixth of those of the world. As for the geographical distribution, the bulk of the known coal deposits are in the extreme eastern and western portions of the country. Employing the usual, more or less loosely defined, designations for the different classes and subclasses of coal, the distribution of the Canadian coal resources, according to provinces, is as follows: Maritime Provinces: Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Bituminous and semibitu- minous coals. THIS paper is not intended to be a technical discussion of square-set framing as used in mines, but merely a short description of the different kinds of framing that have been used in the Butte mines, and what has been decided upon, after years of practical experience, as being the best, taking into consideration the physical condition of the veins and country rock, and. also the supply of timber available for mining purposes. Butte is, essentially, a square-set district. Virginia City, Nev., was the first mining camp to use this method of timbering, and to Philip Deidesheimer, who went to the Ophir mine in 1860, is given the credit of solving the problem of square-set framing, where large bodies of ore were stoped and the timbers were supposed to hold the ground from caving without any filling. That he did his work well is shown by the fact that the main features of his framing are in use to-day. In the Butte mines the conditions are such that this method of timbering is generally used. We do not, of course, depend upon the timbers any more than is necessary. The worked-out stopes are filled with waste rock as close behind the miners as possible and not interfere with mining operations. The waste rock is obtained from development work on the different levels or from the surface. In the earlier days of mining in Butte there were numerous independent companies and naturally there were different ideas as to the best way to frame the square sets, although the general features were the same.
