A geologic study of the Mary Lee Group of coalbeds in the Black Warrior coal basin was undertaken to examine coal stratigraphy and determine regional trends and extent of the coalbeds. The area investigated encompasses 835 square miles in Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa Counties, Ala. More than 700 core logs were used to construct a structure map, coal, interval, and overburden isopachs, and cross sections. There is evidence that structure affected sedimentation. Coalbed isopachs indicate the Mary Lee Group was deposited in fluvial-deltaic and low-lying coastal plain environments. The Mary Lee coalbed is the only coalbed which is continuous throughout the area, commonly with two benches which have a combined thickness of 2 to 12 feet. The Mary Lee coalbed changes rank in the basin from high-through medium-to low-volatile coal. The methane gas potential of the Mary Lee Group coals is estimated to be greater than 1 trillion cubic feet. There is an excellent correlation between the orientation of surface cleats with those measured underground in the Mary Lee coalbed. The face cleats roughly parallel the axes of the area's folds and trend northeast-southwest.

This paper deals with roof bolting in Alabama coal mines and iron-ore mines from the time it was introduced in early May 1948 to May 1, 1953, a 5-year period. The Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. began systematic roof bolting in early May 1948 in a coal mine and in an iron-ore mine, which had some of the poorest roof conditions in the Alabama mines. After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proved by the Tennessee Co. it was gradually adopted by other companies throughout the State, until in May 1953 approximately 53 percent of Alabama's total coal production and 100 percent of Alabama's total iron-ore production, mined underground, was being produced from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the advancement made in roof bolting in the 5 years and also the amount of roof bolting that was being done as of May 1, 1953. Significant progress has been made in the coal and iron-ore mines of Alabama in reducing the roof-fall fatality rates during the past several years by adopting systematic roof bolting. The groundwork was laid through successful experiments early in 1948 by the Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines. This experimental work was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co.2/ in its Southeastern Missouri mines.

Paraphrasing the poetic repetition of Gertrude Stein - "Research is research, is research, is research --- ad infinitum." But research takes many forms and involves many facets. Perhaps the most simple of definitions is that attributed to the late "Boss" Kettering of General Motors who in advising a young trainee said, "Research is an intelligent effort to satisfy the curiosity of the human mind." Reclamation research is complex and requires a diversity of scientific knowledge. The overall aim of land reclamation research is directed to finding practical ways to develop efficient methods to restore mined lands to productive use, compatible with use of adjacent lands, as soon after mining as possible; and, finding practical ways to reduce or prevent damage to surrounding resource areas, which may be affected by the mining process. Research in the field of mined land reclamation is not entirely new, although in some respects we are exploring new areas each day.

(Canal Zone Meeting , October , 1910.) INTRODUCTION. IT is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua; our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, .and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I :able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole.. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transactions, dealing not only with the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas awaiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and other Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. II. HISTORY. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors penetrated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. It is strange that the Spaniards did not find more gold, and work on a scale as extensive as in Colombia and other parts of South America. THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. 1. INTRODUCTION. THE anthracite coal trade, with a shipment averaging about 70,000,000 tons per year, differs essentially from other coal business, in the fact that the larger sizes, comprising about 65 per cent. of the total, are used almost exclusively for domestic purposes, principally during the winter months; and that for proper combustion close-sizing is imperative, so that eight sizes are made; broken, egg, stove, and nut, known as prepared sizes, and pea, buckwheat, rice, and barley, known as steam sizes. These sizes are made in the regular course of preparation, and but little variation in the natural percentage of each is practicable. Thus it is necessary either to work the collieries intermittently, or to dispose of all the varying sizes in their fixed proportions. Unfortunately, the market does not at all times absorb the coal in proper proportions, and rather than interfere with the regular operation of the mines it has been found economical to provide storage for the excess. While the cellars of the consumers are the great storage-plants of the country, this capacity is not under the control of the trade, except so far as reduced prices during the spring and summer months may tempt the use of this reserve. The same remark applies but with less force to the retail yards, which,, though usually small, store in the aggregate a large amount of anthracite. While every effort is made to utilize to the utmost the individual storage-capacity of the country, there still remains the necessity for taking care of the irregularities of the market by the construction of storage-plants under the direct control of the producers. Such plants are usually the property of the railroads, and are situated at points most convenient from a traffic stand-point.

Thermoelectric and metal alloying applications have changed the status of tellurium from oversupply to under supply . In a search for new sources of this element in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , Utah , and neighboring states , the Bureau of Mines analyzed more than 200 samples and obtained the results of tellurium determinations by private companies on more than 500 samples from a wide variety of mineral - bearing deposits . The About 40 minerals containing tellurium have been reported , mainly tellu- rides of gold , silver , bismuth , mercury , lead , copper , iron , and nickel . minerals usually occur in small quantities and identification in ores is extremely difficult . Samples containing more than 0.1 percent tellurium were taken from the Hilltop and Memphis properties in Dona Ana County , N. Mex . , and the Silver King property in White Pine County , Nev . , where development was chiefly for base metals . The Lone Pine mine in Catron County , N. Mex . , and the Bambolla mine near Moctezuma , Sonora , Mexico are potential sources of native tellurium occurring in small but high- grade pods . Much of the production of tellurium has come as a byproduct of electro- lytic refining of copper and lead- zinc ores in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , and Utah . Base -metal ore deposits will continue to be the most important pri- mary source of tellurium , although the concentration in ores is nearly always less than 10 parts per million . Any significant increase in output of tellu- rium probably will be related to production and improved efficiency in smelt- ing and refining base - metal ores .

This circular describes four modern change houses of the Lake Superior iron - ore district , all conceived and constructed since 1937. The oldest change house described herein was constructed and occupied in 1938 , yet it embodies the modern improvement of air - conditioning . The purpose of this report is to describe and illustrate improvements with regard to health and safety features combined in the construction , arrangement , ventilation , heating ,lighting , and other features , with the aid of photographs , sketches , and diagrams . The modern change house is a fire - resistant structure in which intermingling of men in mine clothes and men in street clothes , hazardous dust , heat and humidity , crowding , poor lighting , slippery and muddy floors , and inadequate facilities for clothes and for bathing have been largely eliminated . The miner coming off shift at a modern mine no longer faces the elements when he gets off the cage . He travels through a tunnel to the change house , where he is cooled gradually by room temperatures as he passes from the mineclothes section and shower room to the street - clothes room . He is assured of dry clothes when he is ready for them . No longer is he sent out of the change house into a muddy yard to drive away as best he can . The modern change house has an improved parking lot and graveled or concreted walkways from it to the change house entrances .

"INTRODUCTION The development of methods for determining the total quantity of crude oil that a given pool could be expected to produce in the future and the well-spacing and drilling programs most likely to result in the recovery of the maximum quantity of oil at the minimum cost became problems of acute concern to American oil producers and petroleum engineers during the second decade of the twentieth century, The United States faced what seemed at that time to be a serious shortage of petroleum, and it appeared that the constantly increasing demand for petroleum and its products could not be adequately supplied. Undrilled prospective acreage, which until then had been plentiful, seemed to be getting scarcer, competition was increasing, the margin of profit to the producer was shrinking, and the need for developing constructive policies of conservation appeared paramount. As a result of physical and economic changes then taking place within the petroleum industry prompted by the seemingly uncertain future, accurate knowledge pertaining to the probable future production of oil wells and of oil lands especially was needed and greatly desired. Furthermore, the need for obtaining the maximum quantity of oil from known fields caused technical information - which up to that time had not been deemed essential to the successful and profitable operation of oil lands - to be sought eagerly. The need for technical information, such as methods for determining future reserves of oil and the rate at which the oil could be obtained under a specific program of drilling, was emphasized further with the passage of the Revenue Act of 1918, and oil producers with enough income to place them in the taxable class were compelled, for the first time, to report their taxable income 4/ to the Treasury Department."

MR. McKEEVER: I think we had to start some- where. The proceeds of the beltbuckles and hard hat stickers will certainly be a beginning in a scholarship for some of our young people. And maybe, you know we might even get one of them sometime to go to the University of Oklahoma. A few years ago the luncheon speaker for tomorrow, Brooks Mitchell, got a few of the mine presidents together and we spent a full five hours of just dedicated listening to Carl Terzian. We listened basically on three subjects: how to work with the media, how to work with image, and how to identify with our political systems and those who are in them. I remember that as one of the turning points in my perspective on how our system really works. This gentleman who will be addressing you today, Mr. Terzian, will be conducting about a three-hour session tomorrow. And it's a shame that our other activities will not allow some of the golfers to probably be there. Those of you who can come to the session tomorrow morning will find it most rewarding. A little bit later on we will also have a panel session. And I see all of the panelists are here except for Bob Golten, but I understand that he is registered. We should have a full afternoon session with Charlie and his panel. When we started working on this, we naturally went back to Carl Terzian to give us some guidance. If there is anything wrong with your session, it's my fault because he knows how these should be done and he guided us along the way. One thing that I am sorry, it wasn't his fault necessarily, is that Harry Reasoner will not be with us for lunch tomorrow. Brooks Mitchell is going to make all of the PR he can out of the fact that Harry got scratched and he got in place for him. Brooks gave me one comment along that line. He said, "Do you know what you get when you cross a gorilla with a computer"? Of course I bit on that. He said. "Well, you get a Harry Reasoner." A little over a month ago I was invited out to California to Woodbury University at Carl Terzian's insistence. I happened to be sitting by one of his vice presidents. It was a formal affair. We had to wear tuxedos and everything and Mr.Green was sitting there and he said, "You know," he didn't know who I was at that time, but he said, "You know Carl really didn't want this formal affair. Said he had a couple of friends coming from the coal mining industry and they wouldn't know what to do with tuxedos." So with that Carl, we will start this little session and it's your mike. MR. TERZIAN: Thank you very much Ira. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the men and women of the Institute for allowing me to be here. I'm deeply concerned about my reputation, my image and don't want you to get the inference that I am responsible for Ira McKeever's image. Nobody could be responsible for that! But it is a great case in point that we all should be concerned about our images. I guess tomorrow morning from about 8:30. a.m. to about 11:30 a.m. we are going to do a? hopefully, a productive and very pleasant expertence for all of us in this growing field and great interest that people have in the area of image. I happen to be from Los Angeles. I have a national firm which has handled about 600 corporations', over the years through the areas of public relations,' community, civic involvement all built around a strengthening and safe guarding our precious, free enterprise system. Derelict and ownerless (D&O) mines in South Africa have been an ongoing concern for over a decade. While some progress has been made to rehabilitate D&O asbestos sites, significant work remains, exacerbated by the growth in illegal mining. There are concerns regarding the accuracy and transparency of the D&O database, lack of oversight, and constrained funding, and the government is increasingly looking to the private sector to fund rehabilitation. Given these challenges, a new, sustainable approach to D&O sites in South Africa is needed to bring clarity and transparency to the process, recognise responsibilities and promote partnerships, and explore economic opportunities at D&O sites to reduce the financial liability and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals. This article has three components: i) reviews of international D&O good practices; ii) it analyses South Africa’s current approach and the D&O sites; and iii) proposes a D&O framework that addresses data, risk ratings, responsibilities and rehabilitation, economic opportunities, and stakeholder engagement. The study finds that the majority of the 6,100 so-called abandoned D&O mines are quarries and mine site features, 16% are operational, at least 11% have owners, and only 752 (12%) require rehabilitation. The framework aims to bring clarity and fairness to decision-making and to assign risk and responsibility for rehabilitation and seeks to incorporate economic opportunities to reduce the financial burden of rehabilitation, create jobs for local communities, and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals for the clean energy transition.

The first major evaluation of the nation's raw materials prospects after World War II was completed by the President's Materials Policy Commission (Paley Commission) in 1952 and submitted to the President in June of that year, as a five-volume study entitled Resources for Freedom. The bulk of the report was devoted to an analysis of the past, present, and probable future of the Nation's mineral supply industries. The Commission's evaluation of the future situation regarding minerals was derived from its forecasts of the probable domestic demand for the major minerals in the 1970's. This demand analysis was made in the context of probable worldwide demand. Several crucial assumptions were made by the Commission's fore-casters. It was assumed in 1950 that the next 20 to 30 years would see no major wars and be a period of sustained economic growth. Another assumption was that the anticipated demand for raw materials must be supplied at essentially no increase in real cost in order to avoid crucial supply problems. The Commission's forecasts were derived within the context of the country's expected future rate of economic activity. The gross national product (GNP) growth to 1975 was derived from projections of the number of people in the labor force, hours of work, and an index of probable production measured per unit of labor input. It was believed labor hours would decrease and labor productivity would increase. The result was a forecast GNP growth rate of 3 percent.

The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which include tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased in 1993. The increase in the value of tripoli production was the result of an increase in total production. Special silica stone experienced an increase in unit value but decrease in the quantity produced. Garnet showed a 19 % decrease in quantity and an 8 % decrease in value. Staurolite increased about 51 % in the quantity produced and 136 % in value compared with those of 1992. Staurolite's significant increase in value of production resulted from a 56 % increase in the unit value. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed an 8 % decrease in the quantity produced and a 13 % decrease in the value of production. The silicon carbide industry saw an 11 % decrease in the quantity produced and an 8 % decrease in the value of production. Combined, the industries decreased 9 % in quantity and 11 % in value compared with those of 1992.

The 2023 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) will be held in Boston, MA and will include the presentation of 133 papers divided into 20 technical sessions during the 3 day conference that were selected from over 200+ papers that were submitted to the committee. The selected papers are included within this book to provide a comprehensive recap of the conference while also providing a source of reference for contractors and engineers in the future. The selected papers will include contributions from all divisions of the tunneling industry plus risk management and best contract practices. Boston is known to the tunneling industry for its complex and difficult tunneling history, specifically of recent memory the Central Artery/Tunnel Project also know as the “Big Dig” of the 1980s and early 1990s. The selection of Boston as a host city was fitting from a historical perspective and as avenue for the city to present its upcoming tunnel projects. RETC began in 1972 with the idea of sharing ideas, design and project construction experience, and new technology, between contractors, designers, owners and suppliers. The ability to provide a single location every other year for all facets of the tunneling industry to gather and discuss the aforementioned was and still is viewed as a way to help the tunnel industry grow. The lessons learned from completed projects, the advancement of technology which could be implemented into design and the presentation of new projects by owners/designers and contractors allows for the limits and complexity of upcoming projects to be expanded beyond our current capabilities. Our industry has never been as busy as it currently is, and we are seeing more future projects coming out for solicitation across all business sectors. With the good fortune that all of us have been blessed with one of the biggest challenges that we have been faced with is the shortage of future management on all levels for our projects including the labor force. We all want our industry to continue to grow and succeed, our most important assets are the people that we employ. Investing in the education and continued training of our work forces to be up to date with the latest technology and methods is the key to our success. This also includes develop, recruiting and mentoring of young students graduating college to join our industry so that we can all continue to grow. We hope that all those attending the conference will have the ability to attend as many sessions as possible and to expand their network within our industry. As in past years, scholarship students will be in attendance and we encourage all to offer these students an opportunity to visit jobs, attend learning sessions or future internships to expand their interest in our industry that needs an injection of young engineers to contribute and lead our future Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conferences. The program chairs wish to thank the session chairs, co-chairs, authors, and other members of the RETC Executive Committee for their dedication to this conference. A maximum acceptable level of 2 mg/m3 of respirable coal mine dust in active mine workings was established, effective January 1, 1973, under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It is generally agreed that, as a result, coal mines in the United States are significantly less dusty than they were a decade ago. For example, operators of underground mining machines were exposed to between 3.9 and 6.5 mg/m3 of respirable coal mine dust during 1968-69; now they are exposed to between 1.3 and 1.8 mg/m3. Also, the incidence of underground sections cited for exceeding acceptable levels of respirable coal mine dust decreased during 1976-78, and the vast majority of all working sections are now in compliance. This improvement is very substantial by world standards. It must be regarded as a creditable accomplishment by the coal mine operators, federal agencies, and mine workers involved. Most of the improvement has been brought about by the use of existing technology to control, suppress, and collect respirable coal mine dust. Research and development by the Bureau of Mines has contributed significantly to the accomplishment by improving the methods for sampling, control, suppression, and collection.

MR. J. R. GORDON: The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent papers on Copper-Nickel Matte Converting. Mr. Drummond's paper contains the results of a thorough and exhaustive study of a series of converter charges. Mr. Gronningsater has presented convincing arguments in favour of his claim that the converter has been neglected as a smelting machine for ore. Some of us may not be inclined to agree with his conclusions. Converting, like most metallurgical operations, is a compromise between an ideal and a practical operation. If it were possible for one to neglect entirely the matter of converter linings, I believe we would all agree that the proper flux for matte in a converter would be pure quartz. Under such ideal conditions, one would, if proper temperature were maintained, make the smallest quantity of slag containing a minimum of magnetite. Converter slags are notorious for their high metal content and must always be subjected to a further cleaning treatment before being discarded. For that reason, the tonnage of converter slag produced should be minimized. If norite is used as a converter flux, then the tonnage of converter slag would be greatly increased if the silica content is maintained at 27 per cent or higher. I cannot agree with Mr. Gronningsater's suggestion that, in con¬sidering a converter flux, the sum of the silica, alumina, alkaline-earths, and alkalis should be considered as being of value. The alkalis and alkaline-earth contents of the flux will replace iron in the silicates formed and tend to increase the viscosity of the slags. However, if the converter is to be used as a smelting machine, it will be necessary to drop the silica content of the converter slag in order to avoid production of excessive slag tonnages.
