This paper, dealing with network planning in an industrial complex, discusses the type and size of project that can be handled on a manual basis. After a review of the fundamentals of network planning, and specifically of the Critical Path Method, the author analyses several different types of projects, each with its own characteristics. Some can be handled in conjunction with a computer, but others can be dealt with equally well without one. Among the projects discussed are a blast furnace reline, the installation of a billet mill flying shear, and routine maintenance-type operations.

BROMO Seltzer blue has gone to war. The blue of the Bromo Seltzer bottle is a product of cobalt, the Nation's No. 1 strategic metal. When the National Production Authority, on Nov. 21, 1950, ordered a 70 pct cutback in domestic use of cobalt, a stab of pain was felt in the hearts of the glass, porcelain enamel, steel, paint, pottery, and electrical and electronic equipment industries. The reason: A full-scale wartime economy with astronomical requirements for jet engines, high velocity projectiles, armor plate, electronic equipment, and the many products needed to win a war. There is little potential comfort for cobalt users in nonessential manufacturing, and the military will be pinched for optimum supplies of the metal. However, if proper measures are taken immediately and current plans are completed, in two years there will be far more cobalt available than ever before. When normal times return, cobalt supplies should be sufficient to meet peacetime military requirements, and greatly expanded domestic requirements that will result from new technological development for wartime but adaptable to peacetime products. Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. This paper constitutes a report from the Committee on Geological Research to the Geology Division of the Institute. Two years have elapsed since a formal report was made containing several resolutions aimed at assisting geological research, a review of research equipment available, a summary of research projects suggested for consideration, and a list of research then in progress (see July, 1947, Bulletin, pp. 351-370). At this time we may note what action has been taken on the various resotions and suggestions of the Committee, indicate the more important accomplishments of independent investigators, and present a summary of the rather imposing volume and variety of research currently being carried on throughout the country. I.-Committee Resolutions and Suggestions 1.-A National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geological Sciences The original resolution adopted on the setting up of this Committee was approved with despatch by Council and was forwarded to the Minister of Mines and Resources. Due to a reorganization in the Department and possibly other reasons, no action on this important matter has yet been taken, but we are assured that some time this year such a Committee will be established by the Department of Mines and Resources. Unquestionably, it will give a fresh impetus to research in the geological sciences. When the noteworthy progress made by the research committees on Geophysics and on Soil and Snow Mechanics, established by the National Research Council, is considered, it is indeed regrettable that the Department of Mines and Resources has not acted more decisively in this matter.

"What is the primary responsibility of geo-engineers in mining? Early in my career, I was asked this question by an experienced engineer. After explaining some various tasks, I was informed that the main responsibility was to monitor. Although this proved true for many cases, I came to understand that monitoring is merely one means to achieve the primary responsibility of a geo-engineer — ensure the safety of all personnel. The potential for groundwater to impact stability allows this responsibility to be shared with hydrogeologists as well. Inherently, we monitor to identify risks; we analyze designs and develop models to mitigate risks; and we are provided opportunities to explain to supervisors the geo-risks to personnel and mine plans that will result from particular courses of action. A couple years ago, I took an opportunity to share experiences from the first several years of my career as a geotechnical engineer with junior geoengineering staff within my company. The intent was to share situations that were a part of my development, so they could learn and understand their responsibility to the safety of all personnel. Similarly, the purpose of this article will be to share these thoughts with new geo-engineers in the industry in order to help prepare them for the challenges they will face.What is our purpose?A senior hydrogeologist shared an experience that occurred in their career. The experienced hydrogeologist had spent some time with the hydrogeology staff, most of them relatively new to the mining industry, to understand how they viewed, and carried out, what they perceived as their responsibility at an active mining operation. After a couple months of observing and mentoring, the senior hydrogeologist met with everyone and posed the question “What is our purpose?” I am sure that most junior geo-engineers would start explaining different tasks or projects that they must complete. The list would include monitor ground water levels, track slope movement, evaluate designs, build models, oversee drilling programs, etc. These individuals did as well their supervisor. After going around the room allowing each individual to answer, the experienced hydrogeologist provided them the real answer to the question: Safety. If you examine the root intent of nearly every responsibility geotechnical engineers and hydrogeologists have, it is to apply our professional skills to ensure the safety of our workforce. When the objective of safety from the geotechnical and hydrogeology disciplines is achieved, inherently accomplishing the mine plan should follow suit, or it should significantly minimize the impact by gravity or ground water."

This is the fourth in a series of coal technology reviews being prepared. in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division C.I.M. in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review of Coal Technology for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. Copies of the first review, which appeared in the November, 1948, BULLETIN, pp. 612-614, of the second review in the June, 1949, BULLETIN, pp. 272-275, and of the third review in April, 1950, BUL-LETIN, pp. 1,9?3-196 (also, respectively, in Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262-264 Vol. LU, 1949, pp. 117-120, and Vol: LIU, 1950, pp. 133-136), were distributed by the Dominion Coal Board and are still available on request. In this review, the first in the series in the field of combustion, development and trends during the period approximately from World War II to the present time are described and therefore the presentation is general. Later reviews will particularize developments in relation to the range of coals available in Canada.-ED. INTRODUCTION THE utilization of coal in heat and power producing equipment has become of paramount importance to the coal industry in maintaining stable and profitable markets. In the past, the chief concern was with mining, transportation, and overall supply problems, but modern conditions demand interest in and knowledge of all phases of the product, from coal in situ to its ultimate disappearance in the form of products of combustion. Korea Zinc commenced zinc production in 1978 with a capacity of 50,000 tpa. Since then, continuous investments have been made and resulted in Korea Zinc now being the biggest zinc and lead producer in the world. In the course of increasing zinc production capacity, the company management realized that the company needed a lead smelter to prevent the solid waste disposal problems by treating the lead containing solid waste. This paper begins by briefly stating the objectives and the roles of the lead smelter at Onsan. It describes the QSL process and the TSL process, and further extends the description of the TSL process, through which harmless inert solid waste could be produced for secure final disposal. It is also mentioned that the TSL process plays an important role in the integration of zinc and lead production. Throughout the paper, a positive attitude in handling the environmental issues in the non-ferrous smelting industry is emphasized. Finally, a solution for the solid waste disposal problem in the zinc and lead industry is proposed, with which the environmental issues can be an opportunity rather than a crisis. The current operation at Onsan suggests the future direction of the non-ferrous smelting technology that all of the zinc and lead producers should pursue.

Although the thoughts and efforts of the great majority of people in many parts of the world are today directed toward killing each other, the purpose of this paper is to discuss means of conserving human life. In a world of turmoil and strife, we find time to discuss and make plans to achieve our objective -prevention of the "sacrifice" of life through avoidable accidents. The word" sacrifice" is used here advisedly, as one meaning of the word given in the 1942 edition of Funk and Wagnalls New Dictionary of the English Language is "the act of giving up some desired or valued object for the sake of *** future good." As everyone agrees that life is man's most priceless possession, one wonders if past sacrifices have been in vain. It appears that life is cheap in America; it is cheap because some of the industrialists are too much concerned with making a profit to devote much time and thought to conserving human life; it is cheap because some labor leaders apparently are interested solely in personal power and prestige; it is cheap because a great many workmen fail or refuse to cooperate energetically with the various organizations interested ill; their safety and welfare; it is of little value because, individually and collectively, we are indifferent to our responsibilities toward our fellow men.

Calgary, your meeting place today, is the birthplace of this economic revolution, one that has already sharply altered the economy .of the middle half of Canada, particularly that of Alberta; is increasingly making its weight felt on the economy of all Canada; and is helping re-shape world thinking on sources of vital petroleum supply for both peace and war. Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West. The alkalic igneous province of Montana consists of centers of laccolithic and stock-like intrusive complexes with associated sills, dikes, and breccia pipes (e.g., Judith, Highwood, Little Belt Mts.); isolated plug-like mafic bodies (e.g., Smokey and Eagle Buttes); and clusters of kimberlitic diatremes and ultrabasic dike swarms (Missouri River Breaks). The province extends in a belt throughout central Montana from the North Absaroka Range in the south to the Sweetgrass Hills on the Canadian border. Intrusive activity ranged in age from Late Cretaceous to late Miocene, peaking at about 50 m.y, ago. Diverse types of significant epithermal gold mineralization occur at many of the laccolithic centers. This mineralization took place in large part during the waning stages of, or following, igneous activity. Large remnant travertine blankets in the region attest to comparatively recent hydrothermal activity. The quartz-pyrite-gold mineralization ranges from igneous- hosted stockworks or fracture sets (Zortman-Landusky and Neihart districts) and breccia pipes (North Moccasin Mts.) to replacement zones in flanking and upwarped Madison Group limestone (Gilt Edge and Kendall districts). The latter are mostly localized by intraformational solution breccias in the upper Madison, notably near porphyry contacts. Gold mineralization in the province was accompanied by varying amounts of silver, base metals, sulfosalts, and tellurides, with quartz, fluorite, carbonate, and barite and gangue. Gold occurs as auriferous pyrite, sylvanite, or in native form. Since the 1880's, primary gold production from numerous scattered deposits in the Judith, Moccasin, and Little Rocky Mountains, along with byproduct gold from the Neihart silver district (Little Belt Mountain), has totalled around 2 million oz. The major deposits were in the 1-2 million ton range at an average gold tenor of 0.3-0.6 oz per ton. Most of the ore was mixed oxide or carbonaceous sulfide ore and was treated either by amalgamation or by roasting-cyanidation. Current activity includes heap-leach operations on bulk- tonnage low-grade (approximately 0.03 oz per ton) ores at Zortman-Landusky, and several small-scale, experimental leach or mining operations on carbonaceous replacement ores, as in the Kendall district and Spotted Horse mine. Current exploration efforts for gold are focused not only in the old established districts, but also in and around other alkalic centers, which have been unproductive to date, such as the Crazy Mountains, Sweetgrass Hills, and Bearpaw Mountains. Target concepts in these efforts are porphyry-hosted stockwork or disseminated gold ores and Carlin-type replacement lodes in the flanking Madison or other favorable carbonate units.

THE material improvements which have been made in the practice of exploiting oil and gas reservoirs in the United States during recent years may be attributed largely to: (1) The necessity for drilling deeper wells at costs not much greater than was formerly expended on shallower wells. (2) The necessity for producing oil at a lower cost per barrel. (3) A growing recognition of the importance of the nature of production practice upon ultimate yield of oil and gas. The first two of these factors result, to a large extent, from the fact that a greater proportion of new development has been deeper development, and these wells have been drilled in the face of progressively lower per well allowables. In California, for instance, maximum allowables have declined from 400 barrels per day in March, 1938, to 156 barrels per day in September, 1940, and during this same period some 125 wells were drilled to the deeper 10,000-foot producing horizons discovered during this time. The third item listed above results from our increasing knowledge of the basic factors which influence the amount of recovery we may expect from reservoirs. In addition to the longer-range planning now being undertaken by the more prudent operators, State proration and conservation laws have focused attention upon the importance of methods conducive to obtaining progressively greater quantities of the hydrocarbons in place. In a paper of this length it will be possible to discuss only a few of the recent advances. An effort has been made to select the more important of these and to indicate, where possible, the factors which have made these advances possible.

The Minto coal basin lies in the central part of the province of New Brunswick, near the head of Grand Lake. The village of Minto which is the centre of mining activity of the district, lies about 35 miles east of Fredericton and somewhat greater distances to the north and west of the cities of St. John and Moncton respectively. Although coal has been mined in the basin for a number of years, it was not until recently that the production became sufficient to warrant a thorough geological investigation. The summer of 1922 was spent, in accordance with in structions from the Director of the Geological Survey, in making a detailed study of the geology and coal resources of the Minto coal basin, which is covered by the Minto and Chipman map sheets, each embracing an area of 200 square miles. The present paper is a short outline of the principal results obtained in the field. The writer wishes to acknowledge the assistance cheerfully given him by the managers and officials of the various companies operating in Minto. He wishes especially to thank Mr. W. B. Evans, Manager of the Rothwell Coal Company, for assistance in the collection of fossils and for the generous supply of information relative to the early history of the coal field.

WE have just heard a very able presentation, by Mr. J. C. Cameron, on the subject of Recent Trends in Labour Relations, as they exist today in Canada (l). With minor changes, what he said applies equally to the situation in the United States. Direct negotiation between employer and employee on a man-to-man basis, wherein good faith and mutual esteem was at least sometimes a factor, has almost entirely given way to a mass struggle in which each side is represented by highly trained specialists in a new jurisprudence, built up on vote-getting labour laws, decisions in analogous cases by Boards whose members may have had very little personal acquaintance with the specific case, etc., etc. Membership in a labour union has become almost an essential requisite to a job; once in, the individual workman loses his identity and dares not act on his own initiative or even express any idea not handed him by his Union head. An honest workman cannot turn in an honest day's work, because his Union will not allow him. Leadership in the Unions has become so powerful an instrument, both politically and monetarily, that Union policies are drafted primarily to build up that power, and may have little relation to the equities of the individual case. ?While both sides still render lip-service to the doctrine that Capital and Labour can advance best by co-operation to mutual benefit, that doctrine has in effect given way to as bitter and as legalistic a struggle as any in our civil courts. There are many reasons to believe that we are, industrially, in a situation much like the European situation from 1935 to 1939; an impending war to the death with 'appeasement' as the only, unavailing, policy

"The high rate of failure of new mine developments to meet feasibility study expectations has been the subject of many fine technical papers. Yet failure rates remain stubbornly high.Similarly, the common occurrence of disastrous acquisitions resulting from failed due diligence on projects is well known. Yet such mistakes continue to be made.The authors argue that project and due diligence failure are caused at least partly by cognitive biases. These biases pervade decision-making throughout project evaluations.A wider understanding of these biases (and their effects) is necessary. Only then can mitigating actions be taken.The opportunity for this wider understanding exists. A number of best-selling books have been published on the topic in recent years. With wider understanding of key concepts and terms, cognitive biases can be recognised and discussed. They can also be challenged and mitigated.The authors believe that these concepts should be entry-level, required knowledge for anyone evaluating, developing, reviewing or financing mining projects.Perhaps the most prevalent biases in project evaluation failure are the ‘over-optimism’ biases. In particular, the planning fallacy and confirmation bias.The anchoring effect is also pervasive. This bias propagates unrealistic assumptions from scoping and prefeasibility studies through to so-called definitive feasibility studies. Unrecognised anchoring biases also undermine the validity of many ‘independent’ due diligence reviews. They are also prevalent in corporate acquisitions.The availability heuristic refers to a mental shortcut that can lead to a number of biases. One of these is the narrative fallacy. The mind constructs coherent narratives and opinions, regardless of the amount and quality of the information that support them. Narrative fallacy commonly occurs in the evaluation of social and political risk. Another is disaster neglect, which is especially common in the failure to assess risks associated with tailings management.This paper outlines the relevance of these biases to mine project evaluations. This Bureau of Mines report investigates solvent injection as a means of increasing oil production from low-gravity oilfields; thus, wells in two California oilfields that produce from reservoirs having low-gravity oil were injected with highly aromatic solvents to increase their oil recovery. The wells were either allowed to soak or the solvent was circulated for a period of time. In some of the wells, the solvent was followed by a slug of water. The post-stimulation production rate was considerably higher than the prestimulation rate of the wells. Wells in which the solvent was not followed by water showed an immediate increase in oil production, and essentially all of the solvent was recovered. The wells in which solvent was followed by water essentially showed a delay in the increase in oil production, thus indicating a temporary water block. The results show that the production rate is usually increased by the injection of solvent, and the method may prevent early abandonment of marginal producers. Cumulative post-stimulation oil production indicates that cyclic solvent injection treatment can be an economic success.

EAF dust has been listed as a "hazardous waste" due to the presence of lead and cadmium, and at times chromium. The 550,00 tpy production of . .EA]' dust, estimated for the United States alone, contains more than 10,000 tpy of lead and about 250 tpy of cadmium in addition to nearly 1'00,000 tpy zinc. Even though the listing of .EAF dust as a hazardous material stimulated extractive metallurgical work worldwide, process development efforts have focused only on the recycle of the potentially-valuable zinc units. However, the recycle of the lead and cadmium, while not lucrative, is the more critical effort. Horsehead Resource Development Company, Inc. (HRD), in conjunction with its sister company, Zinc Corporation of America (ZCA), has taken a unique approach to total recycle of the toxic heavy metals found in the EAF dust. Impure oxide, produced by either a Waelz kiln or FLAME REACTOR Process and containing the lead and cadmium, is calcined in a rotary kiln at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, to produce a refined zinc-rich intermediate for ZCA's electrothermic zinc plant at Monaca, Pennsylvania. During the calcining operation, lead and cadmium are concentrated in a fume product and shipped to ZCA's electrolytic plant at Bartlesville, Oklahoma. At Bartlesville, a new hydrometallurgical circuit has been constructed and the existing cadmium plant expanded. The combined facilities permit the total recovery of cadmium to refined metal and the lead to .a silver-rich intermediate, which is sold to lead smelters. In this paper the Waelzing, calcining and new leaching facilities will be described.

Research programs conducted by Allis-Chalmers Corporation are showing that the most efficient energy use in crushers is achieved when the forces applied to particles undergoing breakage are increased. Laboratory bench scale tests have been developed to confirm this phenomena, which was first observed in the field using HYDROCOME crushers with automatic setting controls. A new testing machine is described and methods of maximizing such benefits are postulated. FOREWORD Allis-Chalmers Corporation was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1847 as the E. P. Allis Company, which had an initial interest in manufacturing components in the grinding of flour. As such, its roots were started in reducing material size, which is covered by the generic term, comminution.

The growing national concern over energy has aroused a great deal of interest in the most efficient and least costly way to use our remaining fossil fuel reserves. A number of studies have been published which compare the overall thermal efficiency and cost of gas and electric energy. These studies have been carried out by a wide variety of organizations including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Rand Corporation, The Stanford Research Institute, and The Institute of Gas Technology. This paper is an attempt, by PGandE, a large combined gas and electric utility serving most of the northern and parts of central California, to compare the cost and efficiency of gas and electric energy for certain residential appliances using actual operating data and financial statistics for the year 1974, and thereby develop some guidelines for future energy developments utilizing these limited fossil resources. The appliances chosen for the study were kitchen ranges, clothes dryers, hot water and space heaters. These appliances were selected because they can be served with either gas or electricity and they account for approximately one-third of PGandE's total residential electric sales and nearly all of PGandE's residential gas sales.

"The word ""instrumentation"" has expanded from its original meaning, which in engineering perhaps referred to measuring apparatus alone. In its broadest form, it now includes sensors, display instrumentation, standard pack-aged controllers and, most recently, the use of stored program computers for on-line process control. The paper traces the evolution, in tutorial form, of the successive application of mechanization, measurement instrumentation, automatic control, central operating systems, programmed control, process computer control, direct digital control and, finally, hierarchies of computers used for process control and corporate management as a fully integrated business system. In the field of industrial minerals, the cement industry has seen the most widespread acceptance of these techniques. Computer control has been accepted as the way of life for the blending of chemical materials and for on-line control of the cement kiln. Accordingly, the cement application is selected for further presentation in the paper. This illustrates the trend progressing from control of single loops on process variables toward the objective of total control of the product quality. The economic justification for instrumentation, centralized control, automatic control and computer control is .discussed with reference to savings in fuel, maintenance, operating labour, depreciation, power and product quality improvements."
