The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. UehlinG, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Baker's paper is one that brings up a subject of great importance, and if full statistics could be collectecl of the number of furnace-linings ruined by reason of bad distribution by skip-hoists, it would be found an astonishing array. Unfortunately a universal remedy has not yet been found. The fact that Mr. Baker has apparently succeeded in overcoming the trouble at Sydney, is no guarantee that the same remedy applied at another plant, where very different or even slightly different conditions prevail, mould cure the trouble. That it requires but a slight continuous difference of penetrability in the column of the descending stock of one section, over another, to produce channeling, is clearly demonstrated by Mr. Baker's experiments, by which he reversed the channeling from front to rear instead of remedying the trouble. Every change in the physical make-up of the charge necessarily requires a specific adjustment; even supposing this feasible, the regular working of the furnace is by no means assured, because with the high pressures now customary, the tendency of the ascending gases to plow their way through in a direct course, prevails, and having once opened up a passage, they will persist and cause trouble. Mr. AllaW Gibb, of Mount Perry, Queensland, Australia, in an interesting and instructive paper,* describes fully the great difficulties metallurgists encounter in seeking to produce marketable copper by smelting refractory ores containing arsenic, antimony and bismuth. After reading this description, I prepared a paper for the Institute, which was, however, through a misunderstanding on my part, published in the San Francisco Mining and S'cie~ztiJic Press of April 4, 1903, after its acceptance by the Council, and without credit to the Institute. Consequently, it cannot be reprinted for the Transactions of the Institute; and I can only here summarize its contents and conclusions, referring the reader to the article above named for further particulars. In that article I omitted the col~sideration of bismuth, which we do not encounter in our smelting at Val Verde, and added lead and zinc, which Mr. Gibb had not discussed; and I undertook to shorn, by the record of a year's practice of the Val Verde Copper Co., Arizona, that copper-ores containing arsenic, antimony, lead and zinc may be successfully smelted, without preliminary roasting, in an ordinary blast-furnace with hotblast, making a normal slag, such as one would aim to make under ordinary conditions with cold-blast, so as to produce a marketable matte, containing not less than 45 per cent. of copper, free from arsenic and antimony, and below the limit in lead and zinc penalized by the refineries.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. In this paper it is intended to give a brief history of the career of the gold dredge in New South Wales from that relate up to the present time, during which period the writer, as a designer of many dredges, has been constantly in touch with the subject in all its phases in this State; the points noted are the outcome of his observation in a general way, and to a great extent are apart from the design proper.Gold-dredging in New South Wales up to the present moment can hardly be designated an unqualified success...

Gus C. Henning, New York City: In taking up the discussion of these specifications it is necessary that I give definitions of what I understand under the term " Specifications." There may be three kinds, viz.: (1) Specifications in general; (2) Standard Specifications; (3) Standard International Specifications. 1. A Specification is a document used in commerce which should clearly define the qualities of material to be supplied by the producer, the tests which shall be applied for their determination, and the methods which shall be applied for the purpose of determining that the entire product shall possess such qualities, properties and finish as are desired. The terms used in such document must be applied in accordance with their strict technical definitions as used by those most conversant with them, and the language should be of such accuracy that there can be but a single interpretation of each and every clause. The subject of my paper is one which, I am certain, has exercised the mind of every man on whom depends the safe and economical conduct of mining operations; particularly in this district where the enormous size of the ore body has necessitated the mine workings assuming a scale that was hitherto unknown in the history of Australian mining. I, therefore, approach the subject with the feeling that I am displaying considerable t.emerity, knowing as I do that the subject has engaged the earnest attention and thought of everybody immediately concerned in the extraction of the ore of this district, and particularly of the Broken Hill lode.I think I shall not be contradicted in asserting that a very large proportion of eur accidents are distinctly traiceable to inexperience on the part of the miner, and records at the mines and verdicts of coroners' juries in many instances uphold this assertion by showing that the accident under notice was the direct result of lack of knowledge of the conditions of the work, or, at any rate, of an error of judgment hardly conceivable in the experienced miner. That this assertion is correct may also be proved by visiting any of the mines of the district.To the experienced eye it will be evident at once that a very large number are not in way skilful in the use of their tools and, therefore, lack the experience which of necessity must be coincident with the acquirement of skill. The structure of steel, when rendered coarse by over-heating, is made fine by re-heating to a certain temperature, the determination of which has received much attention from eminent metallurgical authorities. Among these, I may particularly mention Prof. D. Tschernoff' [Chernoff], who, about thirty years ago, studied this question in connection with his investigations on the structure of steel in genera1. † Some years later, Mr. J. A. Brinell took up the inquiry, and arrived at many important conclusions, stated in his well-known rules on the treatment of steel. ‡ These two gentlemen, however, based their reasoning chiefly upon the aspect of fractures—a method which, though it affords valuable information, does not readily reveal the different steps by which a change in structure takes place. For further light on the subject, we owe much to more recent microscopic investigations, which have made us better acquainted with the internal structure of metals. Such an investigation, closely connected with the present subject, and made by Mr. John E. Stead a few years ago, was first published in 1898.6

Secretary's Note.—In printing this paper in the present volume, the figures given in the pamphlet edition have been brought more nearly up to date, the product of 1899 being in many instances inserted. Iron-Ore Resources. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1897,* I discussed the iron-resources of the United States as then developed, calling attention to some principal sources upon which other countries depended. The following statement will give a general idea of the amounts, as compiled from the latest official records, of ores won, and metal produced, in the nations which are important contributors to the world's output. Unfortunately these are not all contemporaneous, since in some countries the statistics do not appear until after one or more years. The statement covers not only pig-iron and iron-ore, but also manganese-ore —the manganese mined being principally used in the production of spiegeleisen or ferro-manganese, and these alloys being generally included in the pig-iron output. In discussing Mr. Keller's paper, I quoted the results obtained by Mr. Allan Gibb, correctly crediting them to Mr. Gibb, with due reference to the report in which they were published. But in the table immediately following, and in my further remarks, following the table, I find that, by some clerical or other error which I cannot, after the lapse of time, explain, I spoke of Mr. Gibb as Mr. "Dean"—a metallurgist who had written on a related subject, but not on the point I was discussing. In short, my reference throughout was to the work of Mr. Gibb; and by reading a Gibb " for a Dean " in all places on pp. 832 and 835 where the latter name occurs, my remarks will be brought into accordance with my intention, and with the facts.
