In this paper, examples are presented of pyrometallurgical research and associated teaching activities during the past century within the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, now the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, at the University of Toronto. Throughout these years, pyrometallurgical research has been characterized by recognition of the importance of the interdependence of measurements and models as well as the development and application of sensors, for the generation, validation and practical implementation of new knowledge. The important role played in the delivery of lectures and participation in joint research by Adjunct Professors with strong backgrounds in the pyrometallurgical industry is described. Projects conducted in close collaboration with the industrial sector and opportunities for students to obtain practical experience working as teams on a "round-the clock" shift basis within an industrial pilot plant environment are outlined. These activities, together with the involvement of students in poster competitions and the presentation of papers at society conferences and technical meetings, are still vital elements in the development of pyrometallurgists equipped with the appropriate professional skills for subsequent employment within academia, government laboratories or the industrial sector.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. The Masbate gold deposits are situated on the island of Masbate, 350 km south of Manila. A new plant was commissioned in April 2009. The grinding circuit consists of one semi-autogenous (SAG) mill Ø9.75 m × 4.27 m, two ball mills Ø5.6 m × 7.1 m and a pebble crushing circuit, which is usually called a SAG-ball mill-crusher configuration. The SAG mill was originally equipped with radial pulp lifters. The mill runs at fixed speed of 10.9 rev/min, which is approximately 80 per cent of critical speed (per cent CS). Due to the high speed of the mill the original radial design pulp lifters presented a high volume of recirculating load inside the chamber and consequently heavy wear on the outer circle (bottom pan).In order to address the high wear on the pulp lifters a number of avenues were considered in early 2011. The chosen solution was to change the geometry of pulp lifters from radial to curved design. The pre-existing drilling pattern on the discharge end of the mill was a major constraint. A number of designs were considered. The selection of the most suitable option was to be made based on 3D discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations.The original radial design and two potential solutions for curved pulp lifters were simulated with 3D DEM and SPH software. The main three objectives were predicting the charge dynamics, the expected wear patterns and discharge efficiency. One of the solutions was chosen and implemented during 2012.Observations carried on after installation of the curved pulp lifters have confirmed, as expected, a reduction in wear intensity on the outer pulp lifters. In addition to this, at early stages of operation with curved pulp lifters, the mill operator noticed a reduction in energy consumed by the mill with no detrimental effect on mill performance.This paper is intended to further study the effect of curved pulp lifters on mill energy consumption.CITATION:Ciutina, S and Soriano, R J, 2014. There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming. Mine soils are often organic matter and carbon poor due to disturbance, topsoil stockpiling and mixing with spoil. They present an opportunity to observe the accumulation of soil carbon arising from rehabilitation or ‘green carbon’ through organic matter inputs and may be considered for carbon credits. Soil carbon is known to improve multiple soil characteristics and is viewed as an indicator of soil health.When attempting to estimate soil carbon levels in the Australian coal mining regions, both coal and black carbon (BC) need to be quantified. Coalmine soils contain coal particles that are difficult to distinguish from organic matter using standard carbon analyses. BC, a material arising from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and fossil fuels, displays some similar characteristics to coal and is ubiquitous in Australian soils due to bushfires. The presence of coal and BC complicate the determination of green carbon levels in mine soils.A method to quantify coal and BC in mine soils from the Bowen Basin using thermal analysis and multivariate curve resolution is presented. By determining BC and coal contributions it is then possible to calculate green carbon levels in rehabilitated mine soils. Grinding efficiency in a vertical stirred mill is affected by a wide range of process and mill configuration variables. Of these, the media fill, size, and intrinsic density have a significant effect on power draw and grinding performance. Media-related factors that influence grinding performance include, e.g.,a higher media filling providing additional particle breakage sites, or a lower bead density decreasing the running torque at a given media filling. It has been estimated that the grinding media can cause up to a 30% change in the specific energy required to grind. FLSmidth has generally recommended that the intrinsic density (specific gravity) of the grinding media be more than triple the slurry density. This density difference helps to ensure that sufficient stress intensity is generated in the mill to provide particle breakage. It also reduces the chance of media ?float? if there is a spike in either slurry density or slurry flow rate. The VXPmills have historically operated at slurry density values between 1.2 and 1.5 kg/L, which translates to nominal bead intrinsic density range between 3.6 and 4.5 kg/L. The current trend towards regrinding bulk flotation concentrates to even finer sizes, to improve recoveries of fine grained minerals, has provided motivation to consider closed-circuit operation of stirred media mills. The slurry density in this application is typically higher than in open-circuit operation due to the higher percent solids in cyclone underflows. An additional effect is that closed-circuit operation increases the potential for media float due to higher flow rates as slurry is recycled to the mill. The normal progression in extending the operating range of existing equipment is to carry out laboratory testing before pilot-scale and plant-scale trials. The results presented in this paper examine the media density to slurry density ratio and its effect on grinding performance.

Many mining engineering graduates enter the mining industry lacking training in mine emergency management. As a result, mining universities in the United Sates and other countries are beginning to form volunteer student mine rescue teams to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and give them hands-on experience managing potential emergency scenarios underground. In the early 1980s, the Missouri University of Science and Technology developed the first collegiate mine rescue team in the United States. For approximately 30 years, it was the only successful collegiate team until the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) started its program in 2009. Currently, there are at least five collegiate teams in the United States and one in Canada. At the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology in Germany, the goal is to adapt the Colorado School of Mines Mine Rescue Program to develop a collegiate team of its own. Currently, mining engineering students cover the theoretical basics of mine rescue in an occupational health and safety lecture and take a basic, one-day mine rescue training course at the Central Mine Rescue Station in Leipzig. The course covers the basic mine rescue topics and gives students the opportunity to experience working in elevated heat and smoke conditions while wearing breathing apparatus. This training gives students a small insight into the importance of mine rescue and mine emergency management. Collegiate mine rescue teaches students the importance of mine rescue and mine safety by giving them hands-on learning experiences before entering the mining industry.

The Arctic is a region of special economic, geopolitical, research, socio-ethnic, and defense interests of both Russia and other countries of the Arctic zone. Introduction of innovation technologies at ore-processing factories is a direct responsibility of the state and this problem should be solved on the basis of coordination of interests of different stakeholders. The task of elaboration of scientific principles of rational state regulation in the North is very topical. Innovations require considerable investments first of all from private capital. However as an investment object innovations are not attractive for investors as they require large expenditures for long-term projects, and they are connected to high risks because market incentives form striving to get quick profits of private companies and result in a certain behaviour strategy while innovations need ?long money?. Under such conditions without state regulation of investment and innovation activities development of the mining sector in the Arctic practically has no prospects. At innovation development of mining enterprises economic growth is provided at the expense of active state innovation activities. The elaborated strategy of ore-processing enterprises should correspond to the modern paradigm of the ore-processing industry development which is not only for extraction of minerals but also for multi-profile structure having comprehensive use of the resources on the rational basis intended for rational complex utilization of mineral resources of the AZR which by the definition includes maximally full use of the whole aggregate of resources on the economically rational basis with obligatory environmental with resource reproductive and socio-economic functions and deterrents. The main principle of creation of innovation technologies is to obtain more products of higher quality with minimal costs. This allows increasing ?productivity of the resources? several times. This principle makes increasing productivity of the resources the most important and in this case efficiency of use of the resources brings extra profits at the expense of lack of new costs such as payment for protection and utilization of wastes. According to the economic theory only ratio between demand and supply is able to fix optimal proportions in economy and to give necessary signals for investment activities of mining enterprises. In this context market for minerals and increase of mineral resources productivity do not create incentives for investment activities without which neither sustainable economic growth nor solution of macroeconomic tasks are possible. Nevertheless countries should not reject this idea in spite of economic efficiency of the enterprises. Extraction degree of useful components and especially oil in the Arctic zone is one of the lowest in the world. This can lead to crisis of oil industry and other mining sectors. The reason for that is lack of a state policy of realization of innovation technologies in the mining sector in the Arctic.

Modelling and optimisation of the power draw of large SAG mills are important due to the large power draw which modern mills require (5~10 MW). The cost of grinding is the single biggest cost within the entire process of mineral processing. Traditionally, modelling of the mill power draw has been done using empirical models. Although these models are reliable, they cannot model mills and operating conditions, which are not within the model database boundaries. Also, due to their static nature, the impact of the changing conditions on the power draw, within the mill, cannot be deter-mined using such models. Despite advances in computing power, on-line modelling of large plant scale mills could be a time consuming task. On the other hand, using on-line parameters for model-ling, result in more reliable control of SAG mill without performing any more costly tests. In this paper, SAG mill power draw is modelled using neural network approach. Six inputs, namely: solid percent, two bearing pressures, noise, recycle and feed rate were used to model the power draw. The produced model shows an acceptable correlation coefficient, R2 =0.9623.

In this work, bioleaching of non-sulphidic materials by applying chemoheterotrophic bacteria and fungi is studied. It was found that the tested fungus, Aspergillus niger, leached substantially more nickel from olivine than the tested bacterium, Bacillus mucilaginosus. A. niger also outperformed fungal species Humicola grisae and Penicillium chrysogenum in the leaching of olivine. Contrary to traditional acid leaching, the microorganisms leached nickel preferentially over magnesium and iron. On average, a selectivity factor of 2.2 was achieved for nickel compared to iron. This can potentially facilitate postprocessing of the leach liquor and reduce the cost. The impact of ultrasonic conditioning on bioleaching was also tested, and substantial increase in nickel extraction with A. niger was observed. This was credited to an increase in the fungal growth rate, the promotion of particle degradation, and the detachment of the stagnant biofilm around the particles. Furthermore, ultrasonic conditioning enhanced the selectivity of A. niger for nickel, resulting in a selectivity ratio for Ni/Fe equal to 3.5. The chemical resistance of the selected microorganisms to several heavy metal and metalloid (As(III,V), Cd, Cr(III,V), Ni, Pb, Zn) was evaluated. It was found that, with the exception of As(v) and Cd, A. niger has high tolerance to these components. Therefore, this biohydrometallurgical route can potentially be applied to non-sulphidic wastederived materials, such as industrial slags, ashes and sludges.

"Ed Rapp is among those who believe in the saying that necessity is the mother of all invention. Rapp is the president of Caterpillar’s mining group. As such, he is tasked with leading the world’s largest mining equipment maker, and its customers, through this time of lower commodity prices, while also positioning his company to be prepared for better days that lie ahead.The decade-long mining boom fueled by growth in emerging markets and demand for commodities that led to record prices for some metals paused in 2008 with the global financial crisis. However, according to Rapp, thanks to stimulus packages around the world, and in particular the stimulus from China that was focused on infrastructure, the mining sector recovered fairly quickly, and from 2010 to 2012, mining was strong.And then the stimulus stopped. Credit dried up and global growth began to slow down and, in the three years since, commodity prices have declined by an average of 60 percent. Caterpillar expanded during the boom, acquiring Bucyrus, and investing billions into the mining sector. It has felt the pinch of the slowdown as much as any mining company in the world. These pages, and those of other mining publications as well as mainstream media, have been filled with stories of doom and gloom about the industry. But Rapp, while acknowledging that the difficult times have been painful, also said Caterpillar sees opportunity in the slow down and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the mining industry as absolute."

"Fluidized bed reactor systems in the minerals industry have been progressively developed and widely implemented over a period of more than sixty years for a multitude of process applications. Their versatility is manifested in calcining, roasting and combustion treatment of minerals including solid fuels. Experiences from metallurgical processes have expanded to new applications in the oil shale processing, biomass combustion and renewable energy sector. This paper focuses on the most important aspects of fluidized bed technology for a variety of Outotec processes. Energy recovery is a major topic for all applications and will be addressed, as well as environmental aspects, particularly regarding the off-gas treatment. Outotec is one of the pioneers of roasting and the fluidized bed process including gas cleaning and sulphuric acid production where applicable. Process development is strongly supported by significant investment in R&D, thus enabling process adaptation and scale-up to meet specific customer/market requirements.Introduction to Fluidized Bed TechnologyThe early days of fluidized bed technology were characterized by the use of bubbling fluidized bed reactors (BFB). This technology was popular for roasting zinc and copper ores. The introduction of circulating fluidized bed technology led to increased plant capacities and improved process control for the traditional processes. Furthermore, the technology has been applied in many other industries, including the renewable energy industry, which will be part of this design and process comparison. The paper starts out with the fundamentals on particle fluidization as the main common design parameter, leading to the importance of heat recovery and offgas treatment.In fluidized reactor systems, the particle concentrations can reach several hundred kilograms per cubic meter of fluidization gas. This high solid concentration leads to large surface areas and enables direct contact of gas molecules with particle surface molecules. Excellent conditions for enhanced heat and mass transfer thus provide nearly ""ideal"" heat exchange conditions and better reaction kinetics. The bubbling bed exhibits a better heat transfer coefficient within the bed in comparison to the circulating fluidized bed (CFB). The different conditions of gas velocities and solid concentrations allowing the classification of fluidization reaction regimes are shown in the Reh diagram in Figure 1."

The environmental and economic sustainability of froth flotation is dependent on effective management, which in turn improves the performance of a concentrator. In economic terms this means improved recovery of valuable minerals, in environmental terms this means effective management of acid generating tailings. Three indicators were selected to measure the performance of an integrated flotation system. The system consists of two stages of flotation; valuable mineral flotation followed by environmental desulfurisation by froth flotation. The suitable indicators were selected based on their fulfilment of four attributes. An attribute is a desired aspect of an indicator. The four attributes were: comprehensive, relevant, sensitive and quantitative. Two environmental indicators and one economic indicator were selected. They represent revenue generation from valuable minerals and environmental cost of management. The suitability of the selected indicators was shown using illustrative scenarios.

The study of synergistic reagents combination of mineral floatation is more and more important with the decreasing of bonanzas now. In order to determine the chemical reaction mechanism, here we present the synergistic reagents combination: amyl-xanthate, butyl-dithiophosphate and N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate ester, which dissolved by different organic solvents. The reagents were applied by an Anhui mine to float low-grade covellite as a substitute for ethyl-xanthate. One reaction products Na2HPSO3?5H2O (disodium hydrogen-thiophosphate pentahydrate) which was re-crystalized and measured by X-ray diffraction analysis. In its crystal structure, the two crystallo-graphically different Na ions are six-coordinated and are bridged by two covalent bonds with the O atoms of water molecules to give a basket unit. However, we can?t get Na2HPSO3?5 H2O by combining butyl-dithiophosphate and N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate ester under the same condition. This discovery may provides a intuitionistic evidence that in the process of reaction, the three com-pounds would cooperate with each other, but the decisive reaction may be the hydrolyzation of amyl-xanthate.

"AbstractWith the increasing demand in reuse of inner city areas and the urgent need for deeper foundation pits under cramped circumstances, adjacent structures close to and high ground water level, the well-known established technologies especially with small to mid-sized dimensions are often too time consuming and occasionally not economic to install lateral support systems. The alternatives for these specific cases could be the usage of the deep mixing technology to create lateral support systems in reinforcing the deep mixing elements additionally to transfer the horizontal loads from earth – and water-pressure.With increasing demand in depth and water tightness, verticality and overlapping of single column solutions are becoming the key in execution. In addition, for some applications subsoil-conditions were not ideal for wet deep mixing technologies. The tubular soil mixing system (TSM) as a combination of mechanical mixing and support of hydraulic cutting by jet grouting can provide solutions toovercome these challenges.1. Current market conditions and trendsThe present financial crisis and the efforts not only to consolidate national budgets, but also to rescue certain banks, have not left the building industry unaffected either. Some drastic cutbacks to public budgets, along with the increasingly restrictive granting of credit for the financing of construction projects, have led to enormous over-capacities in the building sector, with purely negative impact. As a consequence of these negative developments, many companies are experiencing the pressure to restructure more quickly and to reduce costs but at the same time to keep the consequences of all activities, both externally and internally, within limits acceptable to employees, owners and finance institutions and last but not least consumers."

A simplified economic model is derived for the financial return from a new gold mining project. The model is used to analyze the effects of changes in the mining rate, capital costs, working costs, value of the reef and the stoping width. The most effective avenues for improving the return from a new project are indicated. It is shown that those technological innovations which would improve the return significantly, and therefore make it possible to open more mines, are the use of smaller mines, means for improving the mining rate to capital costs ratio for smaller mines, planning and control of mines by computer simulation, an improved mine valuation procedure and means for mining at a decreased stope tramming width.

The feed of flotation unit in Angouran mine, as a part of Iranian Lead and Zinc National Corporation, contains about 34.26% zinc (about 12% Zn sulphide) and 10.14% lead (about 2% Pb sulphide). The grade of Pb and Zn in the final concentrate (rougher+scavenger), under optimal conditions (200 g/ton PEX, 500 g/ton zinc sulfate, 30 g/ton MIBC and pH = 7.5), was 63.18% and 13.01%, respectively, and the total Pb (sulphide-oxide) recovery was about 19% which included 95% Pb sulphide. The grade of Pb and Zn in rougher concentrate step was about 71.86% and 5.97%, respectively, when PEX (Potassium Ethyl Xanthate) was used as collector. While in the presence of PAX (Potassium Amyl Xanthate), the grade of Pb and Zn in rougher concentrate step was 66.8% and 10%, respectively. Tailing of the galena flotation (with 8.48% Pb grade and 34.92% Zn grade under the optimal conditions) was used as a feed for sphalerite and oxide section flotation.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"
