This circular describes four modern change houses of the Lake Superior iron - ore district , all conceived and constructed since 1937. The oldest change house described herein was constructed and occupied in 1938 , yet it embodies the modern improvement of air - conditioning . The purpose of this report is to describe and illustrate improvements with regard to health and safety features combined in the construction , arrangement , ventilation , heating ,lighting , and other features , with the aid of photographs , sketches , and diagrams . The modern change house is a fire - resistant structure in which intermingling of men in mine clothes and men in street clothes , hazardous dust , heat and humidity , crowding , poor lighting , slippery and muddy floors , and inadequate facilities for clothes and for bathing have been largely eliminated . The miner coming off shift at a modern mine no longer faces the elements when he gets off the cage . He travels through a tunnel to the change house , where he is cooled gradually by room temperatures as he passes from the mineclothes section and shower room to the street - clothes room . He is assured of dry clothes when he is ready for them . No longer is he sent out of the change house into a muddy yard to drive away as best he can . The modern change house has an improved parking lot and graveled or concreted walkways from it to the change house entrances .

The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer's price and the producer's price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. Few factors have had more influence in maintaining the strength and stability of the United States than our persistent habit of providing .checks and balances to the dynamic powers of free enterprise on the one hand and to the controls and guidance exercised by the State on the other. .Indeed, it is this same concern for matching forces against each other that has given our republic its ability -to preserve a democratic basis of life for its citizens, and yet maintain a ,government that is able to protect the rights of all and to resist and minimize the danger of excessive concentration of authority. Our current efforts to clarify the nation's mineral policies and to define more clearly the role that the governmental agencies should play in conjunction with the functions of private -enterprise again reveal the desirability and advantages of maintaining our traditional controls. At times, the equilibrium has been temporarily disturbed by too great enthusiasm for one or the other of these basic concepts. Sooner or later, however, the balance has been restored by the healthy opposition that is always created by excesses of one sort. At the current stage in our history, the swing toward undue enlargement of the powers of the State seems to have gone dangerously far and we would be untrue 'to our traditional behavior if the group that must demonstrate the virtues of free enterprise did not rally to its support with the utmost earnestness.

The principal goal of the Oil-Shale Mining Division is to develop the most economical methods and practices for mining oil shale. Experimental work in the mine has not progressed far enough to conduct full-scale breaking tests; therefore, mining season - to October 31, 1945, has been confined largely to problems connected with drilling cost oil shale. Calculations have indicated that commercial production will result in breaking the oil shale; the largest individual turn will be for drilling. This paper is a report on the progress of phase two of drilling research to date; it outlines the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock bit for drilling oil shale.

Two processes are available for the production of synthetic fuels from coal high-pressure hydrogenation and the carbon monoxide-hydrogen synthe- sis. This paper presents some ideas and new developments in coal hydrogen- ation that have been incorporated in an estimate for the production of 30,000 barrels per day of liquid fuels, mainly gasoline. A few comparisons of the processes will be helpful before discussion of the details of pro- posed improvements in the hydrogenation process. The principle of the high-pressure hydrogenation process ie the addi- tion of hydrogen at pressurea in the range of 3,000 to 10,000 p.s.i. to coal at elevated temperature and with the help of catalysts. On the other hand, the principle in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is the complete break-down of coal into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, followed by the catalytic combination of these two gasse into hydrocarbons or suitable catalysts. For the synthesis, moderately elevated pressures of about 350 p.8.1. will bo used in the immediate future, although it can be carried on at atmosphoric pressure with certain catalysts. The products of these two processes using coal as raw material are almost as differont as hydrocarbons can be. The products of the high-pres- sure hydrogenation of coal reflect the original constitution of the coal. They are, therefore, rich in ring compounds, both aromatic and naphthenic, but, due to the action of highly comprcesed hydrogen and catalyst, are satu- rated and very stable. These constituents give the gasoline a high octane number and excellent rich-mixture performance, combined with good gum and storage stability. Therefore, this gasoline is suitable for aviation gaso- line or base stock. The Diesel fuel can be hydrogenated to a centane number of 45 or higher, which is entirely satisfactory for operating normal Diesel

"INTRODUCTION The provision of escapeways from coal mines is a moral and, in most States, a legal obligation of mine owners and operators. The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

Among the procedures developed by the Germans for providing the tonnage of iron powder needed to make rotating bands for artillery shells is the use of a ceramic tunnel kiln, not only for finishing the reduction of centrifugal powders but also for making so-called "brickyard sponge iron," which, after crushing and grinding, seems to yield a product suitable for powder-metallur- gical purposes. The final report issued jointly by the German Powder-Metallurgical Society (DPG) and the Chemical-Metallurgical Branch of the Research Depart- ment of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc. (ZFC of MG) gives the available details of this procedure, which may be regarded as a further development of the process in commercial use since 1911 at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden. The Bureau of Mines' wartime development of the Hoeganaes process also cul- minated in the adaptation of ceramic tunnel kilns for carrying out the solid- carbon reduction of iron ores, and comparison with the German technique should further advance the art. This information circular is issued as a supplement to Bureau of Mines reports of investigations Nos. 3819,2 3822, 3841,2 and 4271, on brick- yard sponge iron and is based on four German reports entitled "Making Iron. Powder in the Tunnel Kiln," translated from FIAT microfilm reel H-46, frames 9190-9209, 9280-9299, 9339-9357, and 9377-9384 (PB L 70042), which represent the four original research reports, Nos. 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2012, respec- tively, of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation , and utilization of coal . This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British committee . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey, in charge , J. W. Buch, Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology; H. J. Rose , Vice - president and Director of Research , Bituminous Coal Research , Inc .; and F. H. Reed , Chief Chemist , Illinois State Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These , together with microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations , are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. In preparing for war , Japan built an iron and steel industry that ranked high with other industrial nations . Deficient in raw materials for making iron and steel , it had to acquire the bulk of its iron ore and much of its coal and scrap iron from foreign sources . Steel manufacture, and fabrication , however , were reserved mostly for the Home Islands , where modern integrated plants produced the implements of war . The vulnerability of relying on imports during the war was recognized early, and steps were taken to exploit iron-ore deposits and develop treatment processes on the Home Islands in order to be as self - sufficient as possible . Although the industry had expanded considerably, the capacity of the large plants still was insufficient for military requirements, so other meth- ods of producing iron and steel were adopted, which in some ways illustrate the desperate effort made to supply the war machine. In developing the iron and steel industry, modern practices of other countries were studied and followed with modifications to suit Japanese con- Aitions. German and American technical ability and equipment played a large part in the program; however, the Japanese had competent furnace technologists capable of obtaining proper equipment performance. For the most part, the standard practice consisted of smelting iron ores in blast furnaces and then refining the pig iron to make steel in open-hearth furnaces. Electric furnaces played an important part, especially in the manu- facture of alloy steels. Various other methods yielded minor but significant production. Among the various other treatment processes used, the production of sponge iron in rotary kilns 'probably was the most important in producing melt- ing stock for steel making. Of special importance was the fact that sponge iron made from low-grade ores contained critical metals, such as nickel and chromium, so that the results were more significant than was generally believed.'

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

By means of a technique developed in cooperation with the Eagle-Picher Mining & Smelting Co. and outlined in the first report of this series (R. I. 4333 ), it was possible to take many thermocouple readings with base-metal couples at temperatures over 2300° F with unsupported protection tubes for over half the lengths of the Henryetta retorts. -This technique made it possible to avoid the use of the usual optical pyrometer, which gives temperatures dependent upon the luminosity of the flames, and which is not conveniently usable to read temperatures for the lengths of the retorts from the front of the furnace. The temperatures of the retorts themselves were necessary in order to set upper limits for safe operation; the lower limits of operating temperatures are set by the zinc content of the retort residues. The zinc content left in the retort residues for various sections of length also varies with retort temperatures rather than with flame temperatures. The variations in temperature along the retort can then be used as guides to distill more zinc from the residues, to avoid fluctuations in the rates ,of flow of zinc vapor into the condenser and to employ lower temperatures if such rates become high enough to cause losses of uncondensed zinc.

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways' development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. Canada west of Winnipeg possesses, moreover resources of petroleum and natural gas, which, together with the power-potential in the long watershed of the eastern slope of the Rocky mountains, give to population centres such as Calgary and Edmonton a choice of energy resources that is almost an embarrass des riches.

The Skene mine, in the Elizabeth District, Illinois, produced lead are from 1901 to 1907. Three exploratory holes drilled just north of the mine were said to have penetrated 40 feet of good zinc are. During the summer of 1944, the Bureau of Mines drilled check holes close to what appeared to be two of the three old holes. They also drilled two holes to the south of the mine and one into the core of the deposit. Results of the investigation are given in this report.

Introduction The fiftieth anniversary is, for an individual or a society, an appropriate time for a review of the past so that events and experiences may be viewed m perspective, and thereby serve as a useful guide to the future. In this review of mining geology it is proposed to set forth the situation as it was when the Institute was founded, and then trace the developments during three appropriate periods-the first from 1898 to 1918 the second from 1919 to 1939 and the third from 1939 to 1948. Mining activities were widespread in Canada in 1898 and some of the operations were considered large for their day. The total value of the metals produced in that year was $21,705,854, and in the case of five metals the output had a value in excess of one million dollars. In order of importance these were gold, silver, copper, nickel, and lead. The important producing areas were ova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario British Columbia, and Yukon. This diversification of the mining areas and the metals produced created an interest in mining throughout Canada, and was an important factor in making Canadians conscious of their mining industry. In the year 1898 geology was a recognized science. The principles of physical geology were well known, but the same cannot be said of economic geology and structural geology. Ore deposits and their occurrence had been studied chiefly in Europe. A great many important observations had been made but the theories linking these facts together were still m a formative stage. The same condition was true of structural geology. These two branches of geological science which are so important in what is now called 'mining geology', had not progressed far enough to be of practical assistance mining operations. For this reason, geologists were regarded as dreamers in ivory towers-a concept chat still lingers in the minds of those who have not kept abreast of the growth of the science.

Liquid fuel oils possess certain advantages over solid fuels. Ease in handling, precision temperature control, and almost complete freedom from ash are among those considered when a liquid fuel is selected for use in industrial processing. In some instances these fuels are desirable because more heating units can e packed in a Given space where space is limited, as on snips. In other cases the' are chosen because of lower actual cost per British thermal unit absorbed, or for control of the flame to increase the capacity of furnaces, as in steel and refining.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. During the fall of 1942, the Bureau of Mines put down nine diamond-drill holes at the Cape Rosier zinc-copper-lead mine in Hancock County, Maine, that aggregated 2,883 feet of bore. These holes supplemented 13 holes, aggregating. 5,501 feet, put down on the property about 2 years earlier by the St. Joseph Lead Co. Veins of mixed sulfides were intersected in 15 of the holes drilled. Beneficiation tests were made on samples of ore obtained from old dumps. Zinc-copper-lead sulfides occur at the Cape Rosier mine as lenses in a zone of altered agglomerate beneath and between a series of diorite sills. The mineralized zone strikes F. 17° E. and dips southeast. Between July 1881 and September 1883 the mine produced about 10,000 tons of ore reported to have contained 20 percent zinc, 2.8 percent copper, and some lead. The crude ore was hand-sorted, and some. 3,000 tons were reported shipped.

Introduction The West Canadian Collieries, Limited, operate three bituminous coal mines in the Crowsnest Pass district of Alberta. Two seams are worked; their thickness varies from 10 to 20 feet and their pitch from 10 to 45 degrees. The Bellevue mine was opened in 1903, the Greenhill in 1914; both are gassy and dusty, and at both the haulage is a problem, as the workings are spread over distances of several miles. Compressed-air locomotives are used at Bellevue, rope-haulage at Greenhill, both of which solutions of the haulage problem are costly in installation an operation, and lack flexibility. In 1943, the Adanac mine was opened; and the question soon arose as to which system of haulage should be selected. Compressed-air locomotives and ropes were rejected on the ground of high cost. Since, under the Alberta Mines Act, the use of trolley locomotives underground in coal-seams is not permitted, the choice lay between storage battery locomotives and Diesel locomotives. The preference of the author, who had had experience with both in French gassy coal mines prior to 1930, was for Diesel locomotives, due to lower cost of installation and greater flexibility and reliability. However, Regulation No. 13 of the Mines Act of Alberta reads: 'No gasoline-driven engines shall be used underground in any mine, and no internal combustion engine shall be used underground in any coal mine, except only when authorized by the Chief Inspector in writing, and on such terms as he may prescribe"
