Newmont Australia is the operator of the Mt Leyshon mine near Charters Towers, Queensland. Mt Leyshon is an open cut gold mine, which processed on average 5.0 Mt of ore and produced up to 250 000 ounces of gold per year. Mining was completed in early-2001, followed by treatment of low-grade ore stockpiles for a further 12 months. Approximately 250 ha of waste rock dumps have been rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of two of the three tailings storage facilities (TSF) has been completed and the third is in progress. A field performance monitoring system that includes an automated meteorological station, large-scale lysimeters (measurement of net percolation), and in situ moisture content sensors (measurement of moisture storage changes in the cover material) were installed to monitoring performance of the cover systems placed on the waste storage facilities. This paper focuses on the installation and calibration of the in situ moisture monitoring system. The moisture monitoring system provides automated detailed in situ volumetric water content data above and within the large-scale lysimeters. A portable unit that provides spatial in situ moisture content measurements at additional locations on the cover system is also utilised. The paper will focus on installation and calibration of the in situ water content monitoring instrument in the waste rock, coarse cover material, and fine textured cover materials of the tailings facility and waste rock dump cover systems.

During the 1980 decade, the rapid price increase for flake graphite has generated a high degree of interest for the discovery and the development of alternate occidental sources of supply in response to fluctuations in quality and availability from current producers. Alike many industrial minerals, graphite draws its complexity not only from its mineralogy and unique properties but also from the very large spectrum of industrial applications each calling for specific quality criterion. As new high technology uses are being developed, more rigid specifications will apply. Discovered during the latter part of 1988 by Mazarin inc., some 30 Km South of Fermont near the Quebec-Labrador border, the Lac Knife deposit was quickly identified as one of the world major long term alternate source of stable supply for this mineral. This paper also reviews the status of the project development as of late 1991, while updating previous papers published by Industrial Minerals1990 and Mining Magazine 1990.

The zinc-lead-silver mineral resource at Lady Loretta ranks amongst the worldÆs richest when measured in terms of in situ metal grades. However, the project remains undeveloped 28 years after its discovery in 1969. The primary obstacle to development has been the fine and complex grain structure of its ores, which make flotation concentration inefficient even with fine grinding. The size and remote location of the deposit have also hindered exploitation. BUKA planned to directly fume the volatile target metals from the ore when it acquired the project. Intensive, post-acquisition modeling showed the innovative processing route to be uneconomic, notwithstanding high metals recovery and low waste content in fume product. Progressive modifications and supplements to the underlying fuming process enhanced economics and resulted in a new mine-to-metal processing route for zinc-lead-silver ores. The proprietary, three-stage BUKA Zinc Process offers technical, economic and environmental advantages. It is expected to find widespread application in the treatment of ores and residues. However, neither continued R&D nor application to Lady LorettaÆs currently delineated resource can be justified under prevailing market conditions. The objectives and results of each step in the process development sequence are outlined with reference to their impact on the commercial viability of the Lady Loretta project.

A geological map of a State involves very much, and its pre sentation to the public incurs grave responsibilities. It has been for a long time my earnest desire to bring out and place before the pub lic a geological map of New York which might be creditable to the State and worthy of a place among her scientific publications. We have done much for the advancement of geological science in this State—very much, and in many directions—but unfortunately, this feature, which should have been made the basis of all our work, has been too long neglected and delayed. For twenty-five years I have been laboring and looking forward to this consummation. I have recorded the field-work, systematic and desultory, upon such maps as were available for this use; and notwithstanding their imperfec tion, I have been able to transfer this recorded information to a more perfect base, which it is hoped will be completed during the early months of the next year. In 1883 I had combined, upon a small map of the State, the in formation which we possessed at that time, and communicated the same with my annual report to the Legislature. The report mas published in the regular course, but the special appropriation made for the map was vetoed by the Governor. Not discouraged by this untoward and unexpected circumstance, I continued my work, and made every effort to render the map more complete, preparatory to its communication with the next annual report. I brought together all the information within my reach, whether published or unpublished, reviewing and revising, as far as practicable, the work done by myself and assistants in southern and southeastern New York.

OF the many items of information necessary to the successful management of the blast-furnace, few are more important than knowledge of the location and movement of the stock: line:—whether the furnace is full and has been kept so; whether the stock is settling regularly or slipping; and, if slipping, how often it has slipped, at what times, and how far at each time. To obtain these data, a man is sometimes stationed at the top of a pair of mechanically-filled furnaces, sim-ply to watch and gauge them by hand in the old-fashioned way. A more recent practice is the suspension of test-rods from ropes leading over pulleys to the ground-level, where the ropes are mound on small drums with graduated peripheries and provided with crank-handles, whereby the skip-man or some other person can quickly and conveniently gauge the position of the stock-line in the furnace. I believe the credit for this great improvement belongs to Messrs. McClure $ Phillips of Sharon, Pa., who were, as far as I know, the first to apply it, and who have a patent for it. The valuable indications gained by application of the Uehling pyrometer to the down-comer are not to be ignorcd; but the information thus furnished is somewhat indirect, and there is no scale for the translation of " top-temperatures " into " feet down." Moreover, this apparatus, as a whole, is delicate, and the cost of installation and maintenance is high. If the record furnished by the Uehling pyrometer is not in the most desirable form, the test-rods, on the other hand, give no record at all, except through the memory or notes of a man who, to say the least, is not gauging continuously, and who may omit to report an improperly low stock-line, if it be due to a fault of his own.

The process of crushing ore in cyanide solution was first used at the Crown mine, New Zealand, in 1897, by Mr. F. R. W. Daw; and, two years later, Mr. John Hinton tried it experimentally at the old Dakota plant, Central City, South Dakota. To Mr. Hinton belongs the credit of introducing this important modification in the Black Hills, this being its first successful application in the U. S., and its results have been so satisfactory that it has become established as the proper manner in which to treat the dense oxidized siliceous ores of this district. Five mills are now crushing ore in cyanide solution, namely, the Horseshoe, 120 stamps (60 in operation); the Dakota, 30 stamps; the Maitland, 40 stamps; the Hidden Fortune, 60 stamps; the Lundberg, Dorr & Wilson, one 6-ft. Monadnock roller-mill; and several others intend to adopt this practice. The dry-crushing process still holds its place for the treatment of the more porous and open siliceous ores; and two mills continue to dry-crush dense siliceous ores. Character of the Ores. The occurrence of the ores of the Cambrian strata in the northern Black Hills has been frequently described.' In practice they are classified, according to their appearance, into " red " and " blue " ores, the former being oxidized and the latter unoxidized. At the present time, usually the red ores only are treated at the mills, although occasionally small quantities of blue ore, which have become intimately mixed with the red in mining, are included. Generally the extraction of values by the direct treatment of raw ore is from 70 to 75 per cent. for red ores, and from 25 to 50 per cent. for blue ores. C. N. FEnner, New York City (communication to the Secretary) : A possible explanation of some of the' phenomena of amalgamation cited by Mr. Bayliss and others has occurred to me. We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:

Joseph LeConte, Berkeley, Gal.: I have read with some care and with extreme interest the work of Dr. Don, and have 110 hesitancy in expressing my high estimate of its value. We have here an example of laborious work undertaken in the true scientific spirit and by right methods. Loose statements and rash conjectures are here brought to the test of chemical analyses. By such work only may we hope to reach reliable conclusions and finally to solve the complex problems presented by the occurrence of ore-deposits. Such work as this is not only scientific but Is in the highest degree practical; for while a crude and imperfect science, by interfering with the results of approved empirical methods, may be positively hurtful, a more perfect science must eventually become the only sure guide to practice. Such a more perfeet science can only be reached by such work as Dr. Don's. I am sure every member of the Institute will unite with me in the hope that Dr. Don will continue his work, and that his example will incite others to similar work. S. F. Emmons, Washington, D. (communication to the Secretary): When a simple beam supports any given load, the lower fibers me in tension while the upper fibers are in compression, and if its cross-section is rectangular the neutral surface, where the stresses pass through zero from tension to compression, is at mid-depth, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. In addition to the longitudinal stresses, there are horizontal shearing-stresses between the fibers which have their maximum value in the neutral surface, and which equal zero at the upper and lower surfaces, while there are also vertical shearing-stresses. Let another beam of the same dimensions be placed on top of this one, and the load be doubled, it then produces stresses in each beam of the same character, magnitude and distribution as in the preceding case, provided there be no friction between the adjacent surfaces of the beams. Next let these two beams be so firmly united that there will be no motion between them when the same load is again applied. All the fibers in the upper beam are now in compression, and those in the lower beam in tension, while the maximum stresses in the outer fibers are only one-half as large as before. The strength of the combined beams is therefore doubled. If, however, some motion occurs between the beams, then the stresses in some of the lower fibers of the upper beam pass from compression to tension, and those in some of the upper fibers of the lower beam from tension to compression, while the stresses in the outer fibers have a magnitude between the two values previously stated. The rapid development of the Mesabi range has been a matter of much wonder to those familiar with ore-deposits elsewhere, and much skepticism was shown when " millions of tons of ore on the Mesabi" was first reported. Now, however, with over 8,000,000 tons to its credit at the close of 1896, a prospect of 3,000,000 more this year, and more ore " in sight" than ever before, it is evident that the first claims for the range were not so greatly exaggerated as perhaps even those who made them thought they were at that time. An explanation of the ease with which these deposits have been explored is found in their mode of occurrence. Lying in flat beds and near the surface, and only exceptionally occurring under a taconite " capping," the prospector had only to sink a few vertical test-pits on a fortyacre tract down to the rock to be reasonably sure whether his property contained ore or not. If he found ore in one or more of these preliminary pits, he would then fill in with more pits until the ore-area was entirely outlined by test-pits from 200 to 400 feet apart. In the early days of the range the testing was almost entirely done by digging pits with pick and shovel. When water was encountered, work had to be stopped, unless a steam pumping-plant was put in, resulting in greatly-increased expenses. Latterly, drills have been used with great success in continuing the exploration after water has been struck in the pit, rendering further progress with pick and shovel impracticable. There are several kinds of drills in use. The diamond-drill is largely used, and possesses the advantage of being in readiness to drill rock if thought advisable, the taconite being very hard and almost impossible to drill except by the use of diamonds. Some form of churn-drill has been much used. This may be either a steam- or a horse-power-drill. The principle is the same in each, the cutting being done by percussion instead of by rotation, as in the case of the diamond-drill. A churning motion is given by passing a rope from the top of the

The chief value of a paper like this consists in its statistical tables, putting on record material useful to future inquirers. The data here given have been compiled from time to time as far back as 1874, and subsequently brought up to date. Much of the data could only be procured by personal inspection of the catalogues, as for example those relating to the Lawrence Scientific School, which were taken at that time from the catalogue of Harvard University, on file in the University Library, by the present writer, then an instructor in that institution. These tables of statistics were first prepared for publication by the present writer in 1888-1890 and published in his "Report to the Board of Control of the Michigan College of Mines " (Michigan Mining School) for 1886 to 1890. Later they were revised, enlarged and brought down to date in his reports to the same Board for 1890-92; and since that time they have been, at his request, revised, greatly enlarged and kept up to date by Mrs. Frances H. Scott, the efficient Librarian and Secretary of the Michigan College of Mines. Great credit is due to her for her devotion to this work and her untiring efforts to have the statistics complete as far as possible. The accompanying running commentary is given simply as a string to hold these statistics together, and in order to call attention to a few points. In compiling any tables like those accompanying this paper, one is confronted by serious difficulties, some of which render these results only approximate. In order to insure greater correctness and fullness in the statistics to be published the writer's reports for 1890-92 were sent to the president of every college, university, and technical school in the country, so far as known. Accompanying this was a personal letter which asked of each one his aid in correcting any errors, and in giving fuller statistics. But relatively few answers were obtained, and subsequently from one to many letters have been sent to each institution not formerly reply-

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. In the summer of 1990, a study was conducted to document large tractor (i.e., Caterpillar Dl1N) utilization in surface coal mining. The tractors were found to be utilized as primary production machines and in combination systems with blast casting and draglines and blast casting and excavator/truck systems. In addition, dozers were used to prebench ahead of a primary dragline system. The study also established ranges and averages for Dl1N operating costs and mechanical availability. Based on simulated production of various tractor dozing applications, the potential for low cost coal stripping was suggested (Hrebar, 1991). A follow-up study, also funded by Caterpillar Inc., was conducted in the summer of 1991 to determine actual production rates in two dozer stripping applications. These actual production rates would then serve as a foundation for estimates of stripping costs. This paper presents the results of the studies in a contour and a cast application.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Cat 994 class) as primary loading equipment in open pit iron ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Data were gathered on loader selection rationale; operating and maintenance experience; and production, availability, and cost information. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. The paper summarizes the field data and includes economic comparisons of wheel loaders versus cable shovels in an iron ore application.

"An acidification circuit was installed and operated at the Agnico-Eagle Silver Division refinery in Cobalt, Ontario, for treating ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution with the purpose of recovering its cyanide and metal values. The acidification circuit was designed from parameters determined experimentally at CANMET. Available refinery equipment was assembled according to a flowsheet developed by Agnico-Eagle Mines. The process produced a regenerated cyanide solution containing >15 g/L of free cyanide, which was used for leaching gold ore at another Agnico- Eagle operation. It was estimated that the value of the recovered cyanide offset the treatment cost. BackgroundThe Silver Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines needed an economic and effective method for disposing of ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution that had remained in the plant after the operation was shut down in 1989. As a result of extensive recycling and evaporation, the solution had become practically saturated with metals, cyanide, thiocyanate, sulphate and other components, and was, therefore, an environmental liability for the company. A partial analysis of the solution is presented in Table 1. Initially, the use of cyanide destruction methods was considered by Agnico-Eagle, but the estimates indicated a considerable cost with no credits to be gained. A research project carried out by CANMET showed that a simple procedure consisting of acidification, filtration and reneutralization was the most attractive option, because it enabled the recovery of a substantial portion of the cyanide. Furthermore, the metals would be recovered in the form of a solid precipitate. The research showed that conventional AVR was not applicable because of excessive cyanide degradation and low HCN volatilization obtained with this particular solution (Riveros et al., 1996). This paper describes the procedure used to treat the concentrated cyanide waste solution and the operating practices of the large-scale acidification circuit run at the Agnico-Eagle refinery."

Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 2 and 3 provide a summary view of the importance of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1989 and 1990.

"This is a brief history of the development of the mining project, with a description of the proven geology. The paper describes how the experiences gained progressively demanded change in the mine design. The equipment used is described, together with methods of working. Interesting facts have been proved regarding gas emissions and roof. supi;iort. The. working cycles evolved are completely flexible m operation and lend themselves to maximum utilization of the most productive units. The two underground mines are compared, showing the variance in conditions already experienced. Programs currently in operation to improve standards and production are: the training of miners, maintenance men and officials; experiments in floor consolidation and continuing roof support trials; and the effect of comparative stability of working crews on the performance of the operation."

Leaching titaniferous magnetite concentrate with alkali solution of high concentration under high temperature and high pressure was utilized to improve the grade of iron in iron concentrate and the grade of TiO2 in titanium tailings. The titaniferous magnetite concentrate in use contained 12.67% TiO2 and 54.01% Fe. The thermodynamics of the possible reactions and the kinetics of leaching process were analyzed. It was found that decomposing FeTiO3 with NaOH aqueous solution could be carried out spontaneously and the reaction rate was mainly controlled by internal diffusion. The effects of water usage, alkali concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the leaching procedure were inspected, and the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. After NaOH leaching and magnetic separation, the concentrate, with Fe purity of 65.98% and Fe recovery of 82.46%, and the tailings, with TiO2 purity of 32.09% and TiO2 recovery of 80.79%, were obtained, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines (BOM) evaluated the technology, capital investment, and annual operating costs of emission control for further reductions of lead in ambient air at the East Helena, Montana, smelter, and the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri. This study seeks to analyze the technology available to the domestic primary lead industry for attempting to further reduce lead emissions below 1985 levels. Through enclosure of concentrate unloading and handling areas and all lead-processing buildings, followed by venting these enclosures to the atmosphere through baghouses and the application of appropriate local controls, emissions can theoretically be reduced by a total of 2,424 pounds of lead per day from 1985 levels at the three Missouri operations. Using conventional technology, aggregated additional capital costs of $250,014,000 and annual operating costs of $18,507,800 are estimated for the four operations, resulting in a total cost of $0.063 per pound of refined lead. Continuous drossing techniques would assist in meeting OSHA standards in process areas. Continuous drossing would change capital and operating costs to $258,344,800 and $16,104,700, respectively, for a total cost of $0.062 per pound of refined lead. First quarter, 1986 open market price for refined lead was $0.184 per pound.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined.
