G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals 0.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. A QUARTER century ago this country was producing an extraordinary quantity of iron and steel, with a decisive influence on the outcome of the first World War. Today this country is again demonstrating its industrial capacity with telling results. If this lapse of time has confirmed the opinion that man learns little from experience with respect to human relationships, at least we can derive some consolation from the knowledge that in the same period we have made huge strides industrially, and particularly in the steel industry. The differences represented by 25 years are striking, and have resulted from a multitude of changes that have contributed to the present-day high state of our pig iron and steel manufacture.

WHILE methods of utilizing blast-furnace slag have been developing, a great deal of literature on the subject has accumulated, but no comprehensive summary of information that would be helpful to engineers, contractors, architects, chemists, and others in under-standing and more successfully using this byproduct of the iron and steel industry has been published in the English language. The National Slag Association recognized the need for such a publication, and the Problems Committee of the Association under-took in 1943 to accumulate the necessary material. Over a period of several years this committee compiled pertinent information in manuscript form, and in 1948 the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association made an agreement whereby the Bureau was to prepare the data for publication as a cooperative bulletin of the Bureau of Mines and the National Slag Association.

The Canadian government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002 and, prior to ratification, committed to equitable distribution of the burden of implementation. The Federal government's Large Final Emitters group is working with industry to develop covenants that will consider the unique nature of the company's operations and not unreasonably burden any one sector or company. Ensuring equitable distribution must consider local, national and international issues. From a Canadian iron ore producers perspective, the fact that most of the iron ore production in the world is in countries that have no Kyoto commitment is a critical issue. Another issue unique to this sector is the increased addition of fluxing agents in iron ore pellet production which has shifted some process related greenhouse gas emissions from steel producers to iron ore producers. While the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol are primarily environmental, the economic implications for Canadian industry are not trivial. For decades Canadian companies have been actively improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to maintain a global competitive position. Production of iron ore pellets is an energy intensive process and the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) is the largest Canadian producer. In 2002 IOCC identified energy and Kyoto Protocol implementation as critical risk factors for their organization and appointed a full time Energy Manager. In January 2003, IOCC initiated a comprehensive process for identifying energy cost reduction opportunities and established an Energy Master plan. This process included:

Pressure on prices will continue as new sources of supply bid for long-term contracts and as steel producers continue to develop mines around the world. Rising costs will make these pressures more severe. We must balance the growth of the world's steel makers with the emergence of new supplies of iron ore. The iron ore industry is now part of a new era in which demand and supply are intermeshed, and the developments around the world are acting on the Canadian iron ore industry's future."

The constant decline in the price of this metal has now reached the stage where it is of much concern and the cause of serious discussion among the leading financiers, economists, and statesmen of the world. Further- more, it is significant that this subject is so important that almost every day one can read articles pertaining to it in the newspapers and trade publications. Being essentially a banker, and not an economist, I do not claim to be an authority on the silver question. These remarks are merely some of my observations in, regard to the many puzzles which-I came across in my recent studies of this very important question.

OF the new production of non-ferrous metals in 1930 gold will rank first in value. We usually think of copper as the most important non-ferrous metal. The copper industry as a whole, that is, adding copper production to copper fabrication, is the largest non-ferrous metal industry. Prior to the world war; however, gold led in value of new metal produced. During the war copper passed gold in value, but gold regained its position during the 1921 depression. For the past several years copper has again passed gold, but in 1930 gold promises again to regain the lead. The gold producer has at times been called a social parasite, largely because we ' cannot eat or drink gold, or because we cannot use it for clothes or for the construction of buildings. Let us briefly examine this accusation.

This study examines the isothermal and non-isothermal reduction behaviors of iron ore compacts in a pure hydrogen atmosphere and compares the results obtained during the reduction process by CO. The different phases accompanying the reduction reactions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its morphology was microscopically examined. In isothermal experiments, temperature plays a significant role in the reduction process. At any given temperature, the reduction rate during the initial stages is higher than that during the final stages. The reduction rate in H2 atmosphere was faster than in CO gas. The comparison of activation energy values suggested that reduction with H2 is more efficient thanwith CO. At the same temperature, the time required to achieve a certain degree of reduction was lower when using H2 gas than CO atmosphere. In non-isothermal tests, the heating rate has a significant effect on the reduction rate and reduction extent. At the same heating rate, the degree of reduction was higher in H2 atmosphere than in CO gas. Based on experimental data, the parameters of reaction kinetics were deduced by application of model-free and model-fitting methods. The reduction in H2 atmosphere was controlled by nucleation model (Avrami-Erofeev model), while the CO reduction reaction was controlled by gas diffusion.

The US mining industry today is fighting for its existence. We are plagued by the shortage of materials, of equipment, of fuels, of capital, of manpower. If we solve those shortages, we are then frustrated in our attempts to open a new mine or, perish the thought, a new smelter. If we manage to make a profit, demagogues will accuse us of stealing from consumers; and, if we do not make a profit and have to shut down, the same demagogues will accuse us of creating unemployment. Meanwhile, in every aspect of our business - from research, exploration and development, to production, marketing and selling - we are hindered in every way by the bipartisan mismanagement and crippling controls of a government bureaucracy gone amok. We are fighting a war on every front. Some of you realize that ours is a war of ideas. In order to win, our industry must make its ideas heard. But to be heard, we must have something to say - which means: we must know our case logically and consistently, all the way down to essential principles. A principle is a primary truth applicable to a great number of instances. A principle is like a road map: it shows you all the possible alternatives for getting from where you are to where you want to go. Although practically everybody recognizes the usefulness of a map and the need to consult it to find the best way' to get from one city to another, most people are not as careful in charting the course of their life, or the course of their industry, or the course of their nation. And so they act blindly, at random, by the whim of the moment, and get nowhere fast.

"INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."

Before the World War this shortage was not so serious as the essential minerals that could not be mined domestically at a profit were bought in the world markets. In those days tourist trade and remittances from Italians abroad helped to provide Italy with foreign exchange. During the World War, when certain mineral products were scarce and when prices rose in some instances to several times normal, the Italian Government began to regulate consumption and imports. It was not until later, when the Fascist regime established the corporate state, that Italy seriously considered adopting a of self-sufficiency. Private industry was grouped under separate corporations, for the principal industries; including mining and metallurgy and the heads of the large producing companies, became members of these corporations. D EC. 20-The spirit of Christmas and good will toward men has managed a few brief appearances on the front pages, welcome relief from man's usual ill-will toward man. A couple politicos did their best to brighten the scene by well-publicized romances. There was a general exodus to Florida to patch up nervous systems, and even the UNO quieted down as Mr. Vyshinsky departed for home via Eastern Germany. Before going he opened up a preliminary bombardment for the worldwide "communist peace offensive," and it is now the duty of the 600 million (according to the Cominform) ideological converts to press home the attack. In Washington, Mr. Lilienthal resigned as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and demonstrated again the difficulty of government to retain the services of capable men. The President has yet to appoint another victim- possibly someone nicely noncontroversial and timid. So might the critics be appeased, but it would bode ill for the rapid exploitation of peaceful uses of atomic energy, the relaxation of excessive secrecy, wider sharing of developmental work with friendly nations and possible revision of the Acheson-Lilienthal proposals for inter- national control of the atomic bomb.

SCRIPTURE, statistics and imagination all were drawn upon by the speakers who acclaimed Daniel C. Jackling as recipient of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal for 1930. The award was made at a special dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, in New York, on Oct. 31. Lafayette Hanchett, old friend and associate, said that if it were his task to compress the life story of Daniel Jackling into a single sentence, he could find noth¬ing so appropriate as these words from the 22nd Chapter of Proverbs, "See'st thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before Kings." Mr. Jackling's diligence, according to the speaker, his love for his task, have been outstanding in his career. W. S. Boyd, now ranking official in the Jackling organization, cited amazing statistics as to the quantity of copper supplied to industry by the four "porphyry". coppers that are under Mr. Jackling's immediate direc¬tion, as well as by those that, in a sense, owe their existence to the pioneer work at Utah Copper. In the aggregate- 16,000,000,000 lb. of copper having an approximate value of $2,700,000,000 have been produced from disseminated ores since 1905; and of this total 42 per cent came from Utah and the Nevada group. Newcomb Carlton, president of the Western Union Telegraph Co., long an admirer of Mr. Jackling, adroitly drew a picture of a similar occasion in some 'foreign country. He imagined Mr. Jackling being raised to the peerage and whimsically addressed him as Sir Daniel, the Right Honorable Earl of Bingham!

The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer's price and the producer's price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. THE problem of compensation for labour is probably the oldest and most complicated one in history. The wage that a man receives is possibly the most concrete thing he gets out of his job and, rightly or wrongly, is generally considered by him to be the most important item in connection with his daily work. How today workers in an equitable way has been the study of industrialists for many years, and a great number of ideas have been tried out in an effort to arrive at a reasonable solution of the question. The idea of establishing a measuring stick for various types of work has intrigued industrial management for a long time and, after considerable study, the principle of Job Evaluation has taken form unti1, at the present time, it is becoming increasingly useful to industry at large. Job evaluation is a plan which is used to determine the relative worth of occupations by means of arbitrary measuring scales. These scales are developed for individual industries and are generally 'tailor made' for each particular case. There are as yet no absolute methods of measuring the work done by human beings and, as a result, one has to depend on comparative values to arrive at conclusions. However, job evaluation has provided us with a basis of negotiation for wage rates which is more satisfactory than mere guess work or persona! opinion. It supplies a common ground for discussion which is understandable by all taking part and ensures that thinking with regard to wage setting is carried out along standard lines.

Nowadays, the beginnings of such a path are discernible in Tennessee, as folks of the metallurgical persuasion find it to their pleasure and profit to call upon the Sage of Copperhill. They come, more and more respectfully as the years go by, yet to ever fewer persons is he known as Mr. Myers, but to more, eloquently, as Jack. Find better ways to run your mill, find happier means of co-ordinating your humanities or serving your professional society, and it's just like the man said about the mousetrap. A druggist's son, born in Wisconsin, May 24, 1889, reared on the Bible in Ohio and Indiana, and completing his education in Colorado, this now indisputably 24-carat Tennesseean has had a checkered career. Going West as a laborer at the tail end of the 1907 panic, he did not make his fortune but he did gain an understanding of labor that in later years endeared him to his men. Graduating in 1913 from Colorado School of Mines with the degree of E. Met. and a string of football letters (also earned the hard way, at tackle) he went to work in Butte & Superior, just at the beginning of the Golden Age of flotation.

What is your assessment of the status of the mining industry as we see some evidence of an economic recovery? I am optimistic about the short and midterm prospects for the industry and, hence, for the professionals in the industry that constitute the majority of the SME membership. All who will read this interview recognize that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our achievements in the mining and minerals processing sectors. I believe that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of other sectors of the global community to attain that same lifestyle will significantly depend on the continued successes of these industries. Looking at some of the traditional economic indicators, we see predictions of continued increases in gold prices during the next 12 months as a new round of quantitative easing keeps real interest rates low and drives excess capital flows from countries with trade surpluses - who have traditionally parked their money in U.S. government bonds - into other investable assets, such as gold. On the fuel side of the industry, we have during the last decade seen a steady rise in the cost of coal, and some of the recent spot prices have seen dramatic increases. Some suggest that coal prices may rise sooner than anyone expects, as global reserves are revised downward. This is based on the hypothesis that some of the main coal-producing countries are overestimating supplies and that coal prices could start rising far sooner than anyone thinks - with obvious serious implications for energy policy. Those forecasters note that, for the past couple of decades, global supply has been dropping at a faster rate than consumption.

Not only is the man credited with being the father of modern avalanche forecasting and safety in the United States, but he is also responsible for developing the avalauncher. Through its more than 40-year history, the avalauncher has gone through many changes yet continues to prove its worth in avalanche mitigation work.
