"Technologies developed to sequester CO2 or use CO2 for enhanced fossil fuel recovery are currently being utilized across the globe. Taxation regimes and CO2 credit trading are becoming drivers for a number of projects. Some mining companies have also identified ancillary opportunity to sequester CO2 in their by-products; recent work in the alumina industry is a prime example. In addition to process plant emissions, mining companies are becoming increasingly aware of their overall carbon footprint, including CO2 generated during the production of utility power. New power plant designs, in various stages of development, include CO2 separation and sequestration techniques. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art for these technologies; including integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants. A concept to use the gasification products as reductant in metallurgical processes is also described. The relevance of technology from power plant designs with post-combustion capture to the processing of off-gas generated in metallurgical facilities is also reviewed.IntroductionGlobalization and international economic growth have led to an increase in energy demand worldwide, and a corresponding increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2005, 81% of global energy supply came from fossil fuels [1]; and while alternative energy technologies are emerging, it will require many decades to curb society’s fossil fuel dependence. Given the global concern of climate change and its scientific relationship with anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), there is at present great interest in the development of techniques to reduce emissions of CO2. While most of these efforts are related to power generation and energy efficiency, the development of technologies for CO2 capture may offer opportunities in reducing emissions from industrial processes."

"The future trading of carbon credits and increased financial cost necessitates substantial cuts in incidental C02 emissions in the production of metals (iron, steel, aluminum, zinc, lead). Although greener methods of production are being developed, in the short term the use of point-source C02 extraction using existing technology remains attractive. Accelerated natural carbonation, in a fluidized bed is a feasible technological route investigated in this research. CFD modelling has been used to study the efficiency of C02 capture in a fluidized bed reactor containing a CaO solid sorbent. A Lagrangian/Eulerian scheme describes describe CaO particle trajectories and exchange of mass, momentum and energy with the carrier gas, with a typical off-gas composition. Different reactor geometries are considered (with uniform, stepped and gradually expanding cross-section), to maximize conversion for a given particle loading and size distribution (100-200 microns). Removal efficiencies of up to 80% are demonstrated, making this a viable process.IntroductionBased on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, the major cause of climate change and global warming is due to a high level of C02 concentration in the atmosphere resulting from fossil fuel combustion, particularly in coal-fired power plants [1]. Carbon capture and storage is therefore the most important action proposed to reduce C02 from combustion flue gases. In this process, carbon dioxide is captured and may then be regenerated as pure C02 and conducted to a permanent storage, or simply stored as a solid carbonate [2]. Capture and storage of C02 has an economic penalty and the main cost of this penalty is associated with the capture plant. Capturing C02 with a lime-based solid sorbent (CaO) is a very promising technique, due to the low cost and the wide availability of the reactant. What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

K. F. Tromp (Kerkrade, Holland)—Your assumption that the Dutch State Mines have lead in the development of heavy medium processes—the Barvoys, Loess, Driessen—is not correct. The credit should be given to a Dutch engineer Mr. deVooys, the inventor of the Barvoys process. deVooys started in 1932 in Hiickelhoven, a German but Dutch-owned mine, where he was a director. Several plants on the Continent as well as in Great Britain were erected. The State Mines started their first plant in 1937. They could not get that plant working satisfactorily and built another one. Their process made no headway, and up to 1946 there was only one plant installed, the one at their own pit. Since 1946 they started the cyclone process and only since that time have they been more active, though industrial cyclone washeries are still in their infancy. deVooys sold his patents to the Dutch State Mines in 1946 and this might have given you the impression that the pioneer work had been done by the Dutch State Mines. We agree with the authors that it was unfortunate that more comprehensive data were not available when the paper was prepared, this being particularly true since we had no knowledge that the paper was being written and could not make available data which were in our process files. Further, it is our opinion that because the data are not sufficiently comprehensive the results which are presented are erratic and will lead to false conclusions. As we see it, there are three Specific reasons why the data which are presented cannot be considered accurate. 1. The preparation plant was not at equilibrium while the samples were being taken. This is indicated by the fact that the percent of solids in the circulating water varied from 3.9 pct to 10.7 pct during the period when the plant was sampled. 2. We do not believe that the samples of Bird feed which were taken were representative and could indicatc the true feed to the filter. Evidence of this is shown in the data where the dewatered product leaving the centrifuge contains more coarse material than the feed to it, that is, material which is +6-mesh in size. 3. We question if the data concerning screen analysis in the fine sizes is accurate and would conclude (from the data) that these tests were made by a dry-screen method. We have found that wet screening is always necessary to obtain a true picture of the quantity of —200-mesh fines which is present. The test work described in the Lyons-Richardson paper was conducted some time ago and the tests were carried on during a period when the preparation plant had not ironed out all of their start-up problems. Since that time most of these problems have been corrected and now this is a smooth running, well-operated prep-

A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. The prospects for near-term growth in coal demand are exceptional: the federal government recently targeted 141 oil- and gas-fired generating units for mandatory conversion to coal; coal-to-synfuel developments are proceeding at a steady clip, with construction of a $1.2 billion gasification plant to begin this year in Beulah, ND; uncertainty over nuclear power and stratospheric oil prices enhance the steam coal market; the export market is ripening; and an influential new political force (the Senate Coal Caucus and Congressional Coal Group) is flexing its muscles on Capitol Hill. But the rosy picture is muddled by signals, often conflicting, sent out by federal agencies. Although EPA can be credited with relaxing its grip on the Clean Air Act, its sulfur dioxide control strategy is still often at odds with the Administration's call for domestic energy (coal) development. B. R. Brown, president of Consolidation Coal Co., sums up the situation: "Every mule is pulling in a different direction." Often in the midst of the fray is the small operator who has been hardest hit by the stagnation of coal markets. Layoffs, shortened work weeks, and mine closures were rampant in the eastern and midwestern coal fields, even among large producers. The longstanding boom in western coal was tempered during 1979 by a noticeable slowdown in announcements of new mine construction. The prognosis: Eastern coal will remain in the doldrums for quite a while to come as it works off some 90 Mt of overcapacity. Midwestern coal will fare no better due to the regulatory-influenced appetite of midwestern utilities for low-sulfur western coal. This displacement should ease, though, as new power plants equipped to burn high-sulfur coal come on line in the years ahead. In the West, the National Coal Association projects production to increase a healthy- 10% this year, although mine-to-market transportation looms as the single largest stumbling block to marketing efforts. Fatalities Up 40% in 1979 The National Coal Association estimated total coal production in 1979 at 671 Mt, an increase of 13% over 1978. Of this total, the East and Mid-west accounted for 476 Mt (71%) and the West produced 195 Mt (29%). With the consistent rise in western production playing against flat outputs in the East and Midwest, underground mining's share of total production continues to slip and is expected to account for only 38-39% in 1980. Incidence of deaths and injuries at US coal mines soared in 1979 over 1978 rates. MSHA figures (still subject to final adjustments) reveal a death rate of 0.07 per 200 000 man-hours, up 40% over 1978's 0.05 figure. MSHA chief Bob Lagather attributed the death incidence to the large number of new coal mines put on line in 1978, which he estimated at between 350 and 400. Nonfatal injuries rose to 8.48 per 200 000 man-hours, up about 15% from a 1978 rate of 7.35. In absolute numbers, MSHA counted 144 fatalities and 18 111 lost-day injuries during the 1979 calendar year. The 144 coal mining deaths in 1979 is the highest number of coal fatalities at US mines since 1975.

John G. Tripp-—The concept of converting fuel deposits in-situ to useful forms of energy and chemical raw materials has important possibilities as a means of stretching out our fuel resources. The authors have worked in this field for years and in fact are among the pioneers in developing in-situ techniques based on underground electrocarbonization. Their efforts have aroused great interest in this subject and their contributions will undoubtedly gain even more significance as time goes on. The 4 to 5 billion tons of petroleum are proved reserves, that is, they are completely defined and could be produced economically with present methods of recovery. Reserves of coal, tar sands, and oil shale shown in Table I are not equivalent to proved reserves as the term is used in the oil industry. Incidentally, the 4.3 billion tons of oil shown in the tabulation is equal to about 28 billion barrels of oil and, therefore, presumably does not include reserves of natural gas liquids estimated at about 5 billion barrels. The relative comparisons would be more complete if these liquids together with the reserves of natural gas were included in the tabulation. It is stated in the report that production costs of the order of 10c per million Btu's could be expected from a large industrial electrocarbonization installation. The authors state that the operation probably could be operated successfully and at a profit. I would like to express my view that for the operation to be profitable extremely favorable conditions would have to prevail. For example, the coal seam would have to be thick and close to the surface in order to minimize drilling costs; the deposit should be dry and so situated that there would be little, if any, inflow of ground water; and the seam would have to be relatively gas tight to avoid excessive gas leakage. Notwithstanding the tremendous strides that have already been made, it is my hope that the authors plan to continue their development work. Experiments on underground electrolinking and initial carbonization at Gorgas, Ala., indicate a need for improved control over the operation. Subsequent examination of the underground system at Gorgas has shown that the gasification zone did not always follow a direct path between the electrodes. Undoubtedly the control of the in-situ thermal processes can be improved by further development work. With respect to the electrocarbonization of oil shale it may be well to point out that the cost of mining oil shale is estimated to be 50c to 60c per ton. These are low mining costs as compared to coal. Thus it would appear that there is less economic incentive for applying in-situ thermal methods to oil shale than there is for applying these methods to coal. As is the case with in-situ methods for petroleum, the product from the shale having the most economic interest would be liquid oil rather than gas. The authors point out that for distances up to several hundred miles it is cheaper to transmit energy as electricity than it is to ship energy as coal. This is a very important point, and with coal shipping rates rising periodically, it could prove increasingly important in the future. I believe that the authors deserve great credit for their outstanding work on underground electrocarbonization. The knowledge resulting from their efforts is of great value to our fuels technology. ALMOST all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide is ruined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in Carbon County, Utah. Coke produced from Lower Sunnyside coal and used in western steel plants is weaker structurally than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality than the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. Early in the war, the Bureau of Mines undertook an intensive investigation of western coals to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed and (b) develop, if possible, reserves of coal with coking qualities superior to Lower Sunnyside coal. Results of investigations in the Kemmerer district, Wyoming,9 and in the Minnesota Creek area, Gunnison County, Colo.,10 have been published.

Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

PILOTED by Cadwallader, Evans, Jr., as chairman, the Coal Division got under way Monday morning for the first of three consecutive sessions. N. F. Patton started the ball rolling with a paper on the economics of anthracite distribution, which was ably discussed by H. J. Rose, W. S. Blauvelt, and others. Mr. Patton pointed out many incongruities in freight rates, dealers' margins, and other factors which are disturbing the distribution of anthracite, one result being that trucks are hauling at least six million tons of anthracite annually, half of which is stolen. In the discussion of the papers the desirability of greater uniformity in the production and shipment of coal from month to month was urged; with larger summer price concessions as a means toward this end. "Performance Expectancy of Domestic Underfeed Stokers for Anthracite," by Allen J. Johnson, brought this important platter down to date by showing the range in capacities and efficiencies to be expected from well-made stokers, and by detailing other of their operating characteristics. DURING the year just closed the bituminous industry has been marked by a continuation of the period of low prices and a steady deflation, accompanied by the closing of mines and the consolidation of small units into larger ones. This pro- gram has marked almost every field in the country, and it bids fair to continue for some time. Some figures recently published for Kentucky show that in 1924 there were 660 mines producing 45,147,000 tons; in 1928 the number had decreased to 537, while production had increased to 61,860,000 tons, and a similar movement is occurring all over the country. Prices throughout the early part of the year were very low, but during the fall and winter the prices received are more satisfactory than they were earlier in the year. One of the leading developments in the marketing of coal during the year was the trade practice movement, which began in the Harlan field, and has now been adopted in the Harlan, Hazard, Appalachian, Logan. Williamson and Kanawha fields. The purpose of this movement is to prevent the shipment of coal except on order, and by the publication of price lists to prevent much senseless price quotation. Where it has been practised the longest this movement has resulted in a considerable degree of stabilization, and, undoubtedly, it will help existing conditions very materially if it becomes universal.

The coal industry had another prosperous year in 1966. Since the turn of the decade, production has been climbing at an average rate of 6% per annum. Although the fast pace slackened somewhat, 1966 production showed a gain of almost 3 % over that of 1965. An impressive record can be drawn from the fact that output per man-day in 1966 was more than twice that of the early 1950's, and more than three times that of the early 1940's. And even though man-power requirements lessened, those men retained by the industry worked longer hours and benefited through higher hourly pay rates. However, cost to the customer increased a little. Such statements can only be made for a healthy industry -one that is constantly improving its efficiency. Coal currently provides more than 25% of the total U.S. energy output. About 50% of all U.S.- mined bituminous coal goes directly to the electric utility market. It should be noted that, now, well over one trillion kwh of electricity is generated annually. Dependence of the giant electric utility industry on coal is based on economy and an abundant, dependable supply of this fuel.

The concept of æsustainabilityÆ can largely be defined as development that will not compromise the ælivabilityÆ of the planet for future generations. It has multiple dimensions, such as the triple bottom line û environmental, economic and social. And it also includes temporal (now and the future) and spatial (local and global) aspects that have to be taken into consideration to achieve true sustainability.Energy sustainability might be defined as û having the light turn on when you push the switch. It has, of course many more dimensions than this simplistic definition. Coal in Australia has an important role in keeping our lights on, but has its problems that need to be tackled head on to maintain a role in sustainable development.An overriding issue in terms of sustainability for coal is its major contribution to our greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we have one of the most effective energy sectors in the developed world, based on well-managed, abundant fossil fuels, our greenhouse gas emissions are one of the highest per GDP in the developed world. We have to reduce our ægreenhouse gas signatureÆ.This paper explores the issues of coal utilisation greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of the fuelÆs sustainability and the potential lower emissions pathways we will have to follow in a future carbon-constrained world.The technology changes will have significant implications for the minerals industry and it is argued that forward-looking coal/greenhouse emissions strategies need to be developed in alliance with the coal (and energy) sector for the minerals industry to maintain its global competitiveness.

IT is appropriate to evaluate 1947 in review as a year of a peacetime record production of about 676,000,000 tons of coal (anthracite and bituminous), closely approaching the extraordinary wartime output in 1944. Considering the general price-wage inflation, it is in point to note that the coal industry sustained the highest wages paid to workers in any major industry, but that coal prices at wholesale levels have risen much less percentage wise than the average for all commodities. The sellers' market continues to prevail. In addition to serving our own country's enormous needs, our coal industry is exporting extraordinary tonnages overseas. This unusual export demand is likely to continue for a while. Moreover, the demand in Europe for American coal mining machinery is a real tribute to the management efficiency of our modern mechanized coal industry. Competitively, the petroleum industry is concerned over its long-term supply, and already a synthetic fuels industry is being publicly advocated. In due time coal and lignite are bound to be

The energy problem of the U. S; was emphasized by the oil embargo of late 1973 and early 1974 and it seemed for a time that the Federal Government, under pressure from the general public, might take some corrective action. However, this was not the case. With the gasoline lines gone and an apparent plentiful supply of petroleum products, public concern quickly dissipated., This country is more vulnerable to an oil embargo today than we were in 1973-1974 and this fact should be of concern to all our people. Since 1968, we have used oil and natural gas at a much more rapid rate than we have been able to find new domestic sources; thus, there is an increasing gap between domestic production and consumption and we have filled the gap with ever increasing oil' imports. These imports have increased at an alarming rate in the recent past, some 58 percent in 1976 compared with 1975. Imports are nearing 8 million barrels per day. Then, by applying some simple arithmetic, at $12 per barrel, the resulting trade deficit is $96 million per day or $35 billion per year. Obviously, this cannot be tolerated by our economy over a long period of time. Historically, we have shifted from one fuel to another as is shown in this slide. In 1850 about 90 percent of our fuel requirements came from direct combustion of wood, by 1900 we shifted to coal for 70 percent of our fuel, and now about 78 percent of fuel requirements comes from oil and natural gas. The difference is that the previous shifts were voluntary and the one facing us now is of necessity.
