Material handling in surface mines accounts for around 50% of the operational cost. Optimum truck dispatching plays a critical role in the reduction of this operational cost in truck and shovel surface mines. Researchers in this field have presented several mathematical models to solve the truck dispatching problem optimally. However, a critical survey of the literature has shown that three significant drawbacks exist in the available truck dispatching models. The published models underestimate the importance of the interaction between truck fleet, shovel fleet, and the processing plants. They also disregard goals set by strategic-level plans. Moreover, none of the available models account for the uncertainty associated with the input parameters. In this paper we present a new truck dispatching model that covers all of these drawbacks, using a fuzzy linear programming method. The performance of the developed model was evaluated through implementatin in an active surface mining operation. The results show a significant improvement in production and fleet utilization.

To maintain flexibility and ductility of tunnels crossing active faults, various mitigation measures are being utilized depending on fault offset movements and seismic design criteria. Examples of those approaches are simple bell and spigot joint, articulated joint, and complex deformable longitudinal bolt and spring joint system with seismic isolation washer. This paper presents a summary of tunnel fault crossing mitigation approaches and design considerations using previous relevant experiences in California as well as case histories from Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, Greece, and Italy found in literatures. Comparisons are made between large and small diameter tunnels, transportation, and utility tunnels, as well as bored, mined and cut-and-cover tunnels. Recent innovations, such as Japanese and Italian techniques, for tunnels crossing active faults are also discussed.

IT is now generally admitted by experts that at least so far as rapid progress is concerned the Alpine system of tunnel-driving is superior to any other. This is perhaps natural in view of the record of experience in driving tunnels through the Alps. These great mountain-chains cannot be treated in the ordinary way by shaft-sinking and driving headings, thus multiplying the points of attack. The work must be done from the ends only, hence speed in driving is of the utmost importance; and, as necessity is the mother of invention, the concentration of effort to make progress has resulted in an organization and in mechanical appliances that have produced results so much in excess of the usual practice, even in America, that a discussion of the subject in detail should be of much value to the engineer and contractor. The first Alpine tunnel was the Mont Cenis, length 7.5 miles, driven with a progress that averaged about 7.75 ft. per day. Next came the Saint Gothard, 9.5 miles long, 18 ft. per day; Arlberg, 6.5 miles long, 27.25 ft. per day; Simplon, 12.25 miles long, 36 ft. per day. The figures represent progress when driving from two headings, so that by dividing them in two we get the daily single-heading progress. The latest of the Alpine tunnels is the Loetschberg, now being driven. In this work the world's record has been beaten by a single day's record in one heading of 36 ft. and by an average daily record in. one heading of 29.5 feet. The Alpine range forms a natural barrier between a large section of northern and southern Europe. For engineering minded individuals, Charleston?s infrastructure has almost as fascinating a history as its more visible surface structures. Charleston was among one of the first American cities to construct separate sanitary and storm water drainage infrastructure. This concept has roots dating back to the city?s founding and is a credit to the foresight of its founding fathers who understood the basic health differences between sanitary and storm water.

Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT) is part of Sound Transit’s $3.7 billion, 14-mile light rail transit system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington, to the cities of Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Redmond. The tunnel was the first Sound Transit East Link project and posed significant construction risk. This paper discusses implementation of design changes to the soft ground tunneling method, implementation of several technologies such as the use macro-synthetic fiber initial shotcrete lining, use of spray-applied waterproofing, and use of shotcrete for the final tunnel lining. These efforts allowed for significant time and cost savings to the project.

The Noranda concentrator was placed in operation in October, 1928, and the object of this paper is to outline operations during the twelve months which have elapsed since that time. The ores milled are massive sulphides carrying copper and gold, and, in certain cases, zinc. These ores have a specific gravity of about 3.8. The average assay of the copper-gold ore so far treated has been 2.0 - 3.5 percent Cu; 0.10 - 0.20 oz. Au; 40 - 51 percent Fe; and 6 - 15 percent SiO2. In this ore the copper occurs almost entirely as chalcopyrite, and the iron which is not combined with the copper is present mainly as pyrite and pyrrhotite. ?some iron is also combined with the silica, the ratio being about 1 to 4, and a small percentage is present as magnetite. The occurrence of the gold has been shown by microscopic work carried out by Prof. L. C. Graton, of Harvard University, to be very variable. Some of it is free, and is included within the base-metal sulphides or occurs at their boundaries. A similar distribution also holds for a portion of the gold which is combined as a telluride. Little is so far known of the occurrence of the silver other than that some of it may be combined with the gold in the telluride, petzite. The copper-zinc ore contains up to 6 percent copper, and has a very variable zinc content. The copper in such ore is present as chalcopyrite, and the zinc as sphalerite. In starting the mill we had three conditions to face; the first of these was climatic, the second was the lack of skilled flotation operators, and the third was the ore itself." The last of these three proved much more difficult to contend with than the other two combined.

THIS gold problem is full of complications and can hardly be handled adequately or comprehensively in any short period of time. Perhaps I might begin by mentioning a few aspects of the subject about which I suppose there will be no disagreement. The first of these is that we already have a stock of monetary gold in the United States far in excess of what is needed to support any desirable increase in the present volume of currency and credit. The second is that this already superabundant gold stock is certain to be considerably enlarged during the course of the war, and presumably during the months of readjustment following its conclusion. Some billions of additional gold, we may reasonably presume, will come into the country during these next few years, thus increasing the aggregate monetary gold stock from the present eighteen billions to perhaps twenty- two or even twenty-five billion dollars.

NO metallurgical process developed in the last half century has been more widely advertised to both technologists and lay- men, or has done more to promote efficiency and economy in the extraction of the valuable portions of ores than has the flotation process. Practically everybody has heard of this strange procedure whereby the heavy portions of an ore are made to float while the light parts sink. Some- times it is called froth flotation, the mineral-bearing froth being from the first a distinguishing characteristic. Many times it is called oil flotation, because a thin film of oil was commonly applied to the particles to be floated to make them adhere to the bubbles that rise through the pulp to form the surface froth. Oil, though commonly used, is not, however, necessary for this purpose, which is one of the facts that has been learned as the process has been developed.

"Modelling and optimization techniques used in the operation of the Detour Lake Mine leach circuit are contrasted to a 1973 review of contemporary techniques used by a major gold producer. The leach circuit at the Detour Lake Mine was modelled using a full factorial Design of Experiment of stirred tank reactor leach tests using circuit feed. Contour plots of extraction were applied in the plant to optimize addition rates of cyanide and the newly-commissioned lead nitrate system. Contour plot sections were used to understand the impact of sulphur in circuit feed at different operating dissolved oxygen concentrations. The 1973 review paper offers insight into industrially-applied modelling and optimization techniques. In particular, a mathematical model of plant data was developed using multilinear stepwise regression analysis. The model was presented using graphical representations available at the time and applied to optimize the rates of cyanide addition. Off-the-shelf software solutions of today allow mineral processors to quickly and easily visualize data, allowing them to re-allocate time and resources spent processing data to generating raw data and extracting actionable information.IntroductionModelling and optimization in mineral processing is the art of reducing reality through judicious use of assumptions to understand a process and leverage this knowledge to engineer practical solutions to metallurgical problems. Data analysis is at the core of this enterprise.While this paper showcases the modelling work done at the Detour Lake Mine (DLM), the primary objective is to pause and reflect on how far the field has progressed since the 1970’s. A snapshot of state-of-the-art gold cyanidation modelling at that time is a review paper of the Anglo American Group’s capabilities (Brittan & van Vuuren, 1973). The objective of this paper is not a play-by-play of the evolution of modelling and optimization since that time. Rather, it is a comparison of the field at two points in time.In 2016, DLM undertook an extensive bench-scale leach circuit modelling program to better understand the impact of cyanide, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate, grind size, density, and pH on gold cyanidation (Fournier, 2016). Two major capital expenditure projects were anticipated for 2017: improvements to oxygen control and a lead nitrate distribution system. While the lead nitrate system was planned for construction, the design parameters had not yet been selected. Following the development of the model, plant trials were executed to validate aspects of the model and the methodology was expanded to address other plant issues, in particular the effect of talc chlorite and pyrrhotite in leach feed.The variables of the bench-scale study are summarized in Table 1. Dependent variables were varied using a full factorial design of experiment with two repetitions for each test condition, yielding a total of 300 tests. Test order was randomized to eliminate bias from independent variables."

On June 16, 1982, Rio Blanco submitted a request to the US Minerals Management Service for a suspension of operations under its federal oil shale lease. The company also wanted a five-year delay in the requirement for further minimum royalty payments and a five-year extension of the primary lease terms of 20 years. The request was granted in late July in the midst of yet another slump in oil shale activity. Rio Blanco holds one of four Federal oil shale leases that were granted under the Interior Department's Prototype Oil Shale Leasing Program in 1974. That year the DOI offered for lease six federal oil shale tracts, two each in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The leases in Colorado and Utah were granted for substantial bo¬nus bids as shown in Table 1, but the Wyoming tracts had no takers. In the eight years hence, no oil shale has been produced commercially. Indeed, the prospects for successful oil shale development have fluctuated widely, continuing a 60-year- old cyclical pattern in the fledgling industry. The prototype program was developed and initiated while this infant industry struggled to begin anew, without the benefit of any federal oil shale leasing regulations, or any history of federal oil shale leasing at all. Permanent regulations were not required because the effort was limited and designed to provide the foundation for any future leasing program. Section 21 of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920, a Nov. 30,1973 Federal Register notice, and the leases themselves constitute the legal and regulatory framework for leasing and developing prototype oil shale tracts. The prototype leases contain some unusual provisions including installment payments of the bonus bids, credit of early development costs against payments due the government, adjustment of royalty rates according to regional crude oil price fluctuations, and unusually extensive and detailed environmental stipulations. Several of the provisions were intended to provide incentives for early development and financial penalties for failure to develop. The requirement for minimum royalty payments in lieu of actual production royalties beginning in the sixth year of the lease falls in the latter category. After the sixth year, the required minimum payment is increased east year through the 15th year by an increment equal to that due in the sixth year. The minimum royalty then remains the same through the final five years of the primary lease term. Minimum royalty is calculates on a different production level for each prototype lease, based on the quantity of 125 L/t (30 gal/st) shale estimated to be recoverable from. each tract by room-and-pillar mining. That mining system was selected for reference as the only proven extraction method for oil shale at that time (early 1970s) The minimum royalty (production) rate was calculated for each tract by direct comparison of its estimated recoverable 125-L (30-gal) resource to a hypothetical tract containing 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st) of recoverable 125-L (30-gal) shale. For the hypothetical lease tract, the minimum production for the sixth year was calculated to be 3.2 kt/d (3,500 stpd), increasing by a like amount each lease year through the 15th to a daily production rate of 31.7 kt (35,000 st). Under this formula, the hypothetical lease tract would yield $16 million in minimum royalty payments over the 20-year primary lease term if there were no production, no development credits taken, and no adjustment of the royalty rate due to fluctuation of regional crude oil prices. The production rate of 31.7 kt/d (35,000 stpd) was a somewhat arbitrary figure that was considered, in the early 1970s, to represent a minimum size for a commercial oil shale operation. A production rate of 7.9 dam3/d (50,000 bbls/day) soon supplanted that smaller mine production figure as a rule of thumb for the minimum size for a commercial facility. The proportional relation-

Considerable process and equipment development and analysis were conducted during design of Freeport Sulfur's laterite nickel facilities in the late 1950's. These covered ore concentration at Moa Bay, Cuba, and concentrate refining at Port Nickel, Louisiana. Both facilities utilized acid pressure leaching and product refining steps that were similar to those later used elsewhere in the laterite processing industry. Unfortunately, developments in Cuba removed the Moa Bay facilities from Freeport control. This deprived the project of a start-up that would have allowed thorough resolution of difficulties and a quicker attainment of production capacity. This meant lost opportunity to positively prove and complete the technology when optimum resources and staff were available. This paper reviews the original rationale of how design was developed via laboratory, bench scale and pilot studies by Freeport Sulfur. Some later operating problems will also be discussed. The words ""Uncertainty"" and ""Risk"" pervade every discussion about mining exploration and investment. Perhaps these terms are subjectively understood by industry professionals, but objective portrayal of these concepts outside the industry is a woefully undeveloped science. This paper addresses current industry understanding and practice regarding quantitative risk assessment techniques, and provides examples of the application of three of these techniques. Probabilistic techniques for financial risk assessment are valuable adjuncts to conventional financial analysis, and address a range of issues not assessable by any other means. The value of whole-of-project probabilistic risk assessment is currently debatable for decision-making purposes, but is seen as important as a mechanism to focus attention to the critical issues that ultimately impact on project success. The dissection of project capital into risk and non-risk components provides valuable insights into risk characteristics not readily quantifiable in any other way. This technique also provides a framework for more objective ""what if?"" scenario evaluation and for the capital structure of resource projects. Finally, mechanisms for the valuation of undeveloped reserves are examined, and guidelines suggested. The importance of reliability in production cost estimates is highlighted and the impact of early development on reserve valuations is discussed. The importance of economics throughout all stages of the evaluation process is fundamental.

Platinum mines in the Bushveld Complex are located in areas with a high geothermal gradient. This means that, compared to, for example, gold mines of the Witwatersrand region, high rock temperatures are encountered at relatively shallower depths. Thus air cooling and refrigeration need to be considered at early stages in mine development. Another factor that influences air cooling and ventilation requirements is the use of trackless diesel equipment for loading and hauling broken rock. At shallower depths it will be more cost-effective to locate the cooling and ventilation equipment on surface, whereas for deeper mines the more cost-effective option is to locate cooling equipment underground. For intermediate depths, trade-off studies need to be undertaken to determine the optimum mix between more cooling and less air or more air and less cooling, as well as the optimum location for this cooling equipment. Factors that are taken into account include power requirements, positional efficiency, and additional infrastructure requirements. Traditionally the approach has been to ventilate ?all of the mine all of the time?. However, with increasing power costs and growing pressure to ensure sustainability, this strategy must be modified to apply ventilation and cooling on demand. In other words, both cooling and ventilation equipment should be operated only when needed and should be adjusted to the demand at the time. Obviously there will be areas that will need to be ventilated (and cooled) continuously (for example, for dilution of flammable gases), but this can be built in to the overall strategy. In addition, in devising ventilation on demand (VoD) strategies, occupational criteria relating to exposure to gases, noise, and heat need to be taken into account. This paper discusses options available for implementing energy-efficient ventilation and cooling systems and suggests ways of changing traditional thinking in the overall ventilation and cooling of mines. Efficient ventilation and cooling designs can play a major role in improving sustainability and reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.

WITHOUT in any way detracting from the credit due those engineer-miners of copper who operate with power shovels, it may be said that compared with block-caving underground their work is simplicity itself. True enough, ingenuity and foresight of high order are required to lay out an open-cut operation to the best advantage; good organization and intelligent care and use of machinery are required to achieve minimum costs. But really successful undercut block-caving demands all this; and, in addition, it requires a conception and application of unseen natural forces that reflect a type of genius that is rare. Assuming that preparatory work has gained access to the orebody, mining of whatever kind consists essentially of three operations: 1. Breaking the ore "in place," as Nature left it, into pieces small enough for convenient handling. 2. Loading these pieces into some kind of a vehicle on wheels. 3. Transporting the broken ore to some central plant on the surface where the process of extracting the valuable metals can be commenced. In shovel mining, dynamite and steam or electric power are used-with remarkable efficiency, be it said-to accomplish each of these three processes. In underground-caving methods the old force of gravity is called upon to accomplish, in large part, processes 1 and 2. To do this with success is an artistic achievement of a sort. Put it another way. The earlier methods of underground mining constituted a translation of surface procedure to an underground theater. The Barrick Bullfrog underground mine was established as an afterthought to the main open pit. As open pit ore dwindles, the underground mining becomes increasingly more important as an ore source, and to the overall economics of the project. This situation is similar to many other mines, and there is a strong move towards underground mining in the United States today. There are inherent problems in starting and operating underground mines in the shadow of any open pit operation, and at the Bullfrog there were several attempts at productive increases that were both successful and unsuccessful.

Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

Placement of coal combustion byproducts into abandoned sections of underground coal mines for the purpose of subsidence mitigation has been investigated in Illinois. Several handling and transportation systems have been examined. Prototype pneumatic and hydraulic placement systems have been developed and demonstrated. The demonstration site, Peabody No. 10 mine in Pawnee Illinois, is selected as a case study. It is found that, for a project of 5 years, transporting 150,000 tons of byproduct annually from a power plant located 32 km (20 miles) to the mine would cost $1.80 per ton and placement into underground would cost $3.07 per ton.

SEVERAL categories of storage are used depending on capacity. Operational storage, which is small in comparison with the market, facilitates handling surges of a few hours' or a few days' duration. Seasonal storage, usually larger, permits accumulation of product during sea- sons when demand is low, for delivery when demand is high. In producing areas, large storage may permit production at a uniform rate, without waste or distress sale. Near large markets such storage increases the efficiency of transportation, allows a more extensive or higher grade market to be served, and affords protection against interruption in delivery.

Although AustraliaÆs coal mining industry is currently experiencing a pleasing period of price relief, long-term trends toward lower real prices will surely continue. Higher price levels attract expansion by existing operators and market entrance by new operators. History clearly demonstrates the relentless long-term march toward ever lower real prices. Therefore, the need for economic returns applies constant pressure to improve productivity. To be sustained, high productivity requires a systematic response based on a solid understanding of critical productivity determinants. The most powerful determinant of productivity is now widely understood to be workplace culture. Culture largely comprises a combination of behaviours, symbols and attitudes. This paper will examine and review scienceÆs latest discoveries in human behaviour. It will provide a proven, practical framework for understanding behaviour and applying this knowledge. Significantly, it will highlight why conventional approaches toward improving productivity often provide disappointing economic returns. The modern understanding of behaviour factors will cover coal face operations. More importantly, because executive and managerial levels in coal mining have significantly greater impact on industry and mine productivity the paper will concentrate on leadership. Particular emphasis will be placed on use of modern systems and in particular use of what are by far the most powerful drivers of behaviours û measurement, analysis and reporting systems. The paper and presentation will show how conventional systems rooted in antiquated American legislation from the early 1900s stifle productivity improvement and drive suboptimal and even counterproductive behaviours. These commonly used systems will be compared with accurate and effective modern methods for assessing performance to improve productivity. These principles are proven in all industries and effective application in mining will be highlighted. Actual results will be used to demonstrate practical approaches successfully applied in both metal and coal mining in Australia and overseas.
