Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.

Total bound moisture (TBM) is a typical quality indicator of industrial-grade gypsum. This gypsum is comprised of three distinct phases, namely anhydrite, dihydrate, and hemihydrate, of which only the latter is of much industrial use. TBM analysis is a lengthy laboratory procedure, and an artificial neural network (ANN) TBM inference measurement is proposed as a fast and online alternative. An ANN inference model for gypsum TBM based on plant data was developed. The inputs to the network were primarily focused on the plant's calciner, and different network topologies, data divisions, and transfer functions were investigated. Furthermore, the applicability of the TBM value as a quality indicator was investigated based on a gypsum phase analysis. A strong correlation between TBM and the gypsum hemihydrate and anhydrite content was found, validating the plant target TBM of 5.8% as a quality indicator. A network topology consisting of one hidden layer with logarithmic-sigmoid (logsig) and pure linear (purelin) transfer functions showed the best performance (R > 90%).

PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator's skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government 'geo-physicists', although they were not known by this fancy name.

SAFETY practice or the elimination of accidents in our coal mines is specifically a problem of management. It cannot be delegated to any governmental agency except that the various coal-producing states do and should have some minimum safety standard laws. However, the legislative method of attempting to control mine accidents is ineffective because of the delay between the necessity and the action. It will always be impossible to keep our various state mining laws up to date; and when the law says you must do a certain thin there is a tendency to do this and no more. Today, Pierce-Smith converters, coupled together with various types of smelting units, are used in most of the world's smelters. However, due to the "batch" processing nature, and problems associated with fugitive emissions during the transfer of melt and blowing stages, this arrangement will unlikely be adopted in future smelters. Modern day alternative processes include the Mitsubishi Process, Outokumpu Flash Smelting and Flash Converting Process, the Noranda Process, and the Ausmelt Process, but only the Mitsubishi Process is a "truly continuous" smelting and converting operation, producing a constant flow of blister without tapping, and is economically proven by long term commercial operations. This paper reviews recent advances in modern continuous converting technologies, with a special section devoted to operation of the "first standalone Mitsubishi C-furnace" coupled together with a Noranda Reactor, at Port Kembla Copper Pty. Ltd. in Australia.

FROM Aug. 31, 1937, until Apr. 30, 1939, there were 40,872,610 bbl. of oil run to storage in California; from Apr. 30, 1939, to Aug. 31 of the same year 5,512,912 bbl. were withdrawn from storage. But from Aug. 31, 1937, to Aug. 31, 1939, the number of producing wells in the state has increased from 17,706, with a potential production of 1,323,202 bbl., to 18,910, with a potential of 2,302,282 bbl. Thus, in a period of two years, during the first 20 months stocks increased over 1/3 and during the following four months stocks decreased 1/30. In the same two years the number of productive wells increased 1/15 and potential increased 3/4. Undoubtedly, the large increase in stocks created the pressure that caused the reduction in stocks that followed; yet this has come about in spite of the larger number of wells and higher potential. Cause of the change was the adoption on May 17, 1939, by the Central Committee of California Oil Producers of a uniform method of oil curtail-ment for all wells throughout the state. Acceptance of the method in the four months following adoption by practically all fields in California indicates that producers generally are convinced of its merit and fairness. True, some operators still overproduce, but the restraint practiced by the remainder of the industry has been sufficient to turn a situation headed for chaos into one of reasonable stability. Credit for this change goes to the industry itself, because it has all been accomplished under voluntary oil curtailment.

Introduction In November, 1927, a paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division by H. A. Pearse(l), in which he described the milling practice at Britannia and set forth the metallurgical results which were being obtained at that time. In the intervening four years, various changes and additions have been made in equipment and practice, which have resulted in marked improvements in efficiency and costs. These changes and their effects are discussed in the present paper. During the past few years two major changes have been made in plant equipment. The first of these was the. elimination of an intermediate crushing stage by discarding two gyratory crushers in favour of two Symons cone crushers. The latter installation-now effects in one stage a greater reduction than was formerly accomplished in two, that is, by the gyratories together with a set of rolls. The second important change in equipment took place when the original M.S. flotation machines were replaced by six Forrester pneumatic machines, so that now the flotation department consists entirely of machines of this type. A number of minor changes and some further additions to equipment have also been effective in raising plant capacity and concentrate grade, while making noticeable reductions in tailing losses and costs of ore treatment.

Introduction The principal primary iron and steel producing capacity of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation is at the Dominion Iron and Steel, Limited, plant at Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The main raw materials are Cape Breton coal, Wabana (Newfoundland) iron ore, and Port-au-Port (Newfoundland) limestone. This plant, which was established at the turn of the century has gradually expanded its production facilities so that today its ingot producing capacity is over 720,000 tons annually. Principal operating units of the plant at present are three batteries of 173 Koppers by-product coke ovens with conventional by-product recovery equipment, three blast furnaces .of 15 ft. 6 in., 18 ft. 3 in., and 19 ft. 3 in. hearth diameter (inside the brick), one 700-ton hot metal mixer, ten open hearth furnaces (two of 175-ton capacity, three 12 5-ton, five 60-ton), one 10-ton electric furnace, a 40-inch blooming mill, a billet mill, a rail mill, a tie plate mill, rod and bar mills, and a wire and nail mill. Extensive machine shops and an iron and brass foundry are also available for plant maintenance and repairs. This paper will describe developments during the past five years and those now in process. It will also briefly discuss research being done and indicate the direction of future development.

The introduction of the 36 MVA smelting furnace at Mufulira, and the experience gained during the first five years of operation have been described previously (6). Based on this experience the furnace was rebuilt in 1977., Details of the modifications made during this rebuild are described. Subsequent to the rebuild, refractory failures, particularly in the electrode ring bricks of the sprung arch roof, continued to cause concern, and repair and improved roof control methods are described. Electrode breakages continued, but developments in casing design and electrode preparation have resulted in significant improvements. Modifications in the electric furnace gas handling system are outlined, together with details of further changes to be implemented in the near future. The systems developed for metallurgical control of the furnace and the thermo-dynamics of the process are discussed. The electric furnace at Mufulira is now operating at above design production levels, and has decisively justified the choice of this technology in situations with inexpensive electric power. The potential for further increases in production capacity from the Mufulira unit, and improvements in design for new units are discussed.

Industrial ecology provides a number of new challenges as well as opportunities for the industry. The development and growth in a particular industry should have a trend towards reduced energy consumption, reduced resource consumption, thereby reducing the cost of production. Technology management strategies will have a key role in achievement of these targets. The paper describes recent developments in technology management, importance of R&D and case studies on adoption of energy efficient & CO2 reduction technologies in metal industry in India. In the end suggestions for future are made.IntroductionInternational Energy Agency [1] has assessed that nearly one third of the World’s energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions are attributed to manufacturing industries. In case of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, the resource equality and product quality finally determine the energy share across the countries. In the overall, Iron & Steel industry accounts for about 19% of total industrial energy used. The saving potential for non-ferrous metals is estimated to be anywhere between 13 to 25 % of the energy consumed depending on the level of resource quality. The projections are that energy consumption worldwide in Industry sector would increase 1.8% per annum up to 2030 on average, and up to 2.5% in developing countries."

New techniques for the continuous sampling and analysis of mine air are expected to replace traditional methods used for the early detection of spontaneous combustion. It has been established that the rate of evolution of carbon monoxide is the earliest indicator of incipient spontaneous combustion. Two methods of continuous monitoring of this gas are available and are now in use in the UK collieries. The first is the UNOR infra-red gas analyser, which is flameproof and may be used underground; the second is a system of tube bundles, which permits air to be drawn from any critical point in a colliery and analysed on the surface. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages but both provide the colliery manager with far more information on the condition of his pit than could previously be obtained by spot sampling and laboratory analysis. This paper describes the two systems presently in use and assesses likely future developments.

The recently completed In-Pit Crushing and Conveying Project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109,000 tonnes per day of copper ore, utilizing regenerative conveyors capable of providing over 5.5 megawatts (7,000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. Past issues of Minerals and Materials have discussed such aspects of the economy as consumption and investment expenditures, interest rates, productivity, and international trade barriers and their effect on the minerals industry here and abroad. In this issue, we will (l) look at recent indications of a possible economic recovery, (2) present 1983 expectations reflecting the results of industry surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and (3) briefly discuss the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to total gross national product (GNP). THE RECOVERY Throughout most of 1982, DOC's Composite Index of Leading Indicators provided evidence of impending improvement in the economy. The index increased moderately during eight of the months in 1982 and then jumped an estimated 3.6 percent in January 1983 (table 1). While the leading indicators continued to predict improvement, the general economy, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, continued its slide through November 1982 (table 2). Finally total industrial production increased in December 1982 and continued on an upward path in January and February, as predicted by the leading indicators.

IT will be recalled that the first professor of metallurgy in the United States, appointed in 1855, never really gave any instruction in metallurgy and gradually turned into a professor of mineralogy. Metallurgy was included with. mining in the early curricula, two students who took the B.S. in mining engineering from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1862 wrote their graduation theses on the metallurgy of copper and zinc, respectively. Even after Columbia School of Mines established, in 1868, a separate curriculum leading to the Ph.B. degree in metallurgy, very few students elected it,* preferring to take the mining degree, since they received in its curriculum nearly all the metallurgical instruction they would have in the metallurgical curriculum. For many years a large proportion of the men who attained prominence in metallurgical enterprises had taken mining rather than metallurgical degrees. METALLURGY Clifton Sorby's study of thin sections of rocks under the micro¬scope, beginning in 1850, and its subsequent development by Zirkel and others, had made microscopic petrography a recog¬nized department of geological research as early as 1873. . It was inevitable that the idea of studying polished metal surfaces-¬under the microscope by reflected instead of transmitted light would occur to investigators. The Royal Canadian Mint has implemented significant process additions since 2005. Installation of a whole new highly automated silver refining circuit has allowed recovery of physical silver from gold and silver dorés . To complement this change, a small Top Blown Rotary Converter has been in operation. On the gold refining side, a new hydrometallurgical process to recover precious metals from Miller Chlorination slag has been developed. Finally, new systems have been put in place to improve treatment of waste water, wet and dry fume and dust.

Even under the best of circumstances, proper planning and care must be taken during a variety of processes to ensure a safe, successful result. However, every now and then a project suddenly arises where safety, timing and cost factors combine to form a critical scenario requiring rapid execution in an environment far more challenging than the norm. On these occasions, the stresses, complications - and most notably the dangers - related to the industry increase exponentially, and conspire to test the mettle of even the most seasoned experts.

INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. "Three primary drivers are setting the trend for base and precious metal processing . they are: continued low real base metal prices, environmental concerns, and continued high prices for PGM.s. Low base metal prices are increasing the search for economies of scale and company consolidation as well as the development of some hydrometallurgical technologies. Environmental concerns are pushing for continued reductions in SO2 emissions and hydrometallurgical technologies. The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

Introduction First, I should define more closely the vague term 'recent work' that appears in the title of this paper. Following the period of depression that was an aftermath of the first Great War, the Research Council of, Alberta carried on for ten years without a Council and without a financial yote by the Legislature. In November, 1942, a new Council was formed, under the chairmanship of the Hon. N. E. Tanner, Minister of Lands and Mines, and a vote was granted by the Legislature early in 1943. By 'recent work', I mean work during the present regime. The Council is now going full steam ahead, or would be if it could get suitable technical assistance and required apparatus and materials. Lack of these has so far made unnecessary my responsibility for seeing that we do not exceed our estimates. The Annual Meeting of the Research Council will be held in November (1945), and at that meeting the programme of work for next year will be discussed. The present time is therefore the correct time for any of you who may have ideas as to work which might profitably be undertaken by the Council, to submit these ideas for consideration. I propose to discuss my subject under several headings, and to give enough of these to show that the Council has wide interests.
