The Bureau of Mines estimated the economic feasibility of investing in a directional hole methane drainage project in the Pittsburgh coalbed for 5 yr in advance of mining. This report estimates the capital investment and operating cost of recovering 325 MMft3 of methane gas per year and the selling price of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year. The labor, equipment, and supply requirements were determined from those of a previous directional hole drilled at the Emerald Mine, near Waynesburg, PA. The cost of equipment, materials, services, and labor are in third quarter 1982 dollars. They were obtained from vendors, contractors, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Findings indicate a total capital investment of $1,381,160. Annual operating cost amounted to $167,690. At a wellhead price of $2.05 per thousand cubic feet, the sale of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year results in a rate of return on investment of approximately 25 pet.

The rapid rise of industrial Los Angeles to international prominence has been accompanied by the natural corollary - a record influx of population - together with greatly increased production and fabrication of steel and nonferrous and light metals; industrial mineral processing; and high consumption of fuel oil, gasoline, and chemicals. These have resulted in the release of hundreds of tons of metallurgical and mineral dusts, fumes, and gases into the atmosphere daily. Los Angeles County, intrinsically, is no worse than other industrial centers in respect to the generation of atmospheric contamination. It is, in fact, more fortunate in that no coal is used, and it has no great primary metallurgical industries comparable to those of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meteorologic and topographic peculiarities of the area, however, which result in poor drainage of the polluted air away from the Los Angeles Basin, serve periodically to greatly increase the intensity and frequency of industrial smog visitations. This combination of intense industrialization, population influx, climate, and topography has made mandatory control of air pollution necessary. The nonferrous pyrometallurgical industry of Los Angeles has three rather unusual characteristics that contribute to its difficulties in developing suitable fume control: It consists of a multiplicity of relatively small establishments subject to wide Variations in products and operating schedules; operations are largely of the secondary or reclaiming nature and, therefore, often work dirty scrap metals; and, unfortunately, much of the industry is concentrated, to a considerable extent, near the center of the city. A difficulty inherent in most nonferrous foundries, including the many brass-works melting alloys containing zinc, is the high volatility of zinc and the extremely small mean particle size of the resulting zinc oxide fume.

This profile study of the commercial secondary aluminum industry examines not only the elements that form the industry but also the technological contributions of each toward industrial growth. Concise descriptions of processing methods trace aluminum scrap from generating sources to marketable industrial and consumer goods. Economic and marketing appraisals are used to illustrate the impact that recent technology has had upon the secondary aluminum industry. Price, supply, demand, competition, and substitutes are selected as components of an economic model of the secondary industry and are used to illustrate the aggregate effects of technological changes. The final section is a conceptual look at the future in which sensitive economic indicators (such as die casting in the automotive and appliance industries) are examined as well as the problems of conserving mineral resources by retrieving secondary aluminum from solid waste.

The Ludwigshafen and Oppau plants are largely independent I. G. factories situated some 23 miles apart on the west bank of the Rhine facing lannheim. The former factory is a general organic chemical works specializing in dyes, dye intermediates, plastics and synthetic rubber,. while the latter is a heavy organic chemical factory producing ammonia, methanol, higher alcohols and their derivatives. Before the war much of the I. G. research and development work was carried out at Ludwigs- hafen; in particular the high pressure research section directed by Dr. Mathias Pier played a very active part in all hydrogenation developments. Apart from the possibility that a full scale hydrogenation or Fischer Tropsch plant had been erected at Ludwigshafen/Oppau during the war, the main objectives of an oil team investigation were: - (a) To obtain from Dr. Pier and his staff an advance general picture of German fuel production processes. (b) To study the fuel developments still in the research and pilot plant stage. (c) To examine any new developments in hydrogen or synthesis gas manufacture. (d) To look for new processes for production of high anti-knock fuel constituents and for new fuel additives. (e) To investigate new chemical syntheses based on raw materials obtainable from oil. The Ludwigshafen and Oppau factories were first visited by the large team listed in Appendix A during the period 25-31st March. The investigation revealed that no large plant for synthetic fuels or lubricants had been operated at this target. All the important members of the Fuel Research Section staff had been evacuated to Heidelberg and information on the work of this department was therefore limited to that contained in seized documents, the greater part of which have still to be examined in detail. Valuable information on synthesis gas production from hydrocarbon gases was obtained as well as interesting data on a num- ber of chemical syntheses. Two members of the above team Holroyd and Faragher accompan- ied by Major Tilley (interrogator) went on to Heidelberg, contacted Dr. Pier and the chief members of his staff on April 1st and obtained from them the hydrogenation information given later in the body of the report. Later, after visiting Leuna, Holroyd, Faragher and Ellis paid a second visit to Heidelberg and to Ludwigshafen/Oppau on 27th-30th May to check a number of details, particularly with respect to hydrogenation costs, and to obtain information on the pressure.conversion of water gas to hydrogen and on the manufacture of Wickel pressure vessels.

This paper describes the mineral deposits and discusses mining and milling methods and related operating conditions in an important gold , silver , lead , and zinc producing area in Ouray , San Juan , and San Miguel Counties , Colo . , embracing 250 square miles . The area is extremely rigged , ranging in altitude from 8,000 to 14,000 feet . White men first penetrated the area in 1860 , when a group known as "Baker's party " reached the Animas River at the present site of Silverton . Difficulty with the Ute Indians and severe winter conditions forced the group to leave and discouraged prospecting until 1870 when a second party reached the area and succeeded in producing 27 tons of ore yielding $ 150 a ton in gold . In 1874 , a treaty with the Indians opened the way for settlement , and mining was established . The total production of recovered gold , silver , copper , lead , and zinc from 1873 to 1947 in the three counties is valued at $347,057,047 . The greatest amount of the total production of metals has come from quartz veins in a series of volcanic flows and tuffs covering the area and comprising a blanket 4,000 to 6,000 feet thick . The igneous rocks were laid down upon an old , erosion surface and are underlain by Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and pre - Cambrian metamorphic rocks . The entire series has been intruded in late Tertiary time by volcanic dikes and larger intrusive masses . Because of the great differences in relief generally , mining is con-" ducted through long adits to a depth of nearly 3,000 feet below surface in places . Walls of the veins generally stand well , and shrinkage stoping is the most common method of mining . As virtually all of the ore is sulfide below the zone of oxidation , flotation is the common method of milling . Generally , where gold is important , provision is made for its removal by jigs . Bulk concentration of the sulfides is practiced at smaller mills , but the larger operations make a selective lead and zinc concentrate or a lead , zinc , and copper . concentrate . ·

This is one of a series of capers being published by the Bureau of Mines on gold mining A the Western States. It describes the production of gold in the principal mining districts of New Mexico. The material was gathered red on a trip through tale State in the summer of 1936. Galvanizers' sal skimmings have been treated by two methods of leaching in attempts to produce preflux solutions suitable for use in galvanizing operations. Both water-leaching and acid-leaching procedures are effective, except in severely exhausted skimmings when water-leaching becomes impractical. A preliminary analysis of the skimmings is not required. Solutions in the recommended concentration range can be produced conveniently by control of pH, specific gravity, and chlorine content. A technician would require only a short period of training to be able to perform the operations described.

Several systems have been proposed for the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale. An economic analysis of one proposed system is presented in this paper. An oil shale complex to produce 100,000 barrels per calendar day of semirefined crude oil will require a capital investment of $426,216,400. This investment includes mining, retorting, intermediate pipelining, and partial refining. A selling price of $3.74 per barrel of product will be necessary to maintain a discounted cash-flow rate of 12 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts basic and applied research related to predicting, eliminating, and/or controlling rock bursts in underground hard-rock mines and coal bumps in underground coal mines. An important element in this research is the development of a reliable and efficient microseismic source location technique. This report presents the results of a Bureau study to develop and evaluate a new algorithm to locate microseismic events based on the Simplex method, a powerful linear programming technique. The technique was tested on both field data and simulated data. Microseismic event source locations obtained with this new Simplex-based algorithm were shown to have less error than those locations obtained using a least squares method. It was concluded that the Simplex approach to source location of microseismic events can be used effectively in microseismic monitoring.

The Young America lead-silver-zinc mine in Stevens County, Wash., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during parts of 1946, 1947, and 1948. Results of the investigation are described herein. The mine is 1/4 mile northeast of Bossburg, Wash., the nearest railway station. An excellent paved highway (No. 22) connects Bossburg with Colville, Wash., 23 miles to the south. The property was located in October 1885. It is credited with a production of 2,178 tons of shipping ore since 1901. The shipping ore averaged 7 percent lead, 7.7 percent zinc, and 16.1 ounces silver per ton. The property is under lease and option to Walter E. Morris and Perry Leighton of Colville, Wash. The deposit crops out on a steep limestone bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The country rock is a highly metamorphosed, brecciated, marbleized limestone (Northport formation).

Real2 gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.3% in the fourth quarter and at 2.5% for all of 1986, according to the most recent Department of Commerce estimates table 1). The 1986 GNP growth was the lowest since the recession in 1982, and was slightly below the estimate published in the last issue of Minerals and Materials. Barriers to greater economic growth in 1986 included the Federal budget deficit, the trade deficit, reduced energy-sector investment because of low oil prices, and uncertainty over changes in the Federal tax code.3 Major sectors of the economy responsible for the fourth-quarter growth included real Government purchases of goods and services, up $19.9 billion from the third-quarter level; real net exports, up $12.2 billion; real residential investment, up $3.0 billion; and nonresidential fixed investment, up $1.5 billion. The increase in Government purchases of goods and services was attributed to the S25.1 billion rise in net purchases of farm products by the Commodity Credit Corp-oration. Real personal consumption expenditures and inventory investment declined, however. Personal consumption expenditures declined primarily because of reduced motor vehicle purchases. Despite only modest growth during the fourth quarter, the economy improved significantly because of the narrowing of the trade deficit and growing employment (table 2) while maintaining low unemployment and inflation rates. Business sounded an optimistic note, with planned increases in current-dollar capital spending of 0.9% for 1987 compared with a 1.7% decrease in 1986. While it is primarily the nonmanufacturing industries that expect to increase investment from 1986 levels, some manufacturing industries are increasing investment by significant percentages as well, notably the steelmaking and nonferrous metals industries (table 3).

Credited with production of more than 164,000 flasks Of quicksilver from 1876 to 1944, the Oat Hill mine has ranked third in output in the United States. During World War II, when the demand for mercury was high, this property was selected for diamond drill with the purpose of increasing ore reserves so that production could be maintained or, if necessary, increased. Although the existence of marginal-grade ore (fill material) left in the stapes and possibly of virgin ore of good grade had suspected in certain parts of the Oat Hill mine, no factual information to tonnage, grade, or location was available. In close cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines studied old records and the few available incomplete maps. Diamond drilling began in November 1943 and was completed in December 1944. Twenty-eight holes aggregating 8,121 feet were drilled, in only parts of the promising areas disclosed by the study of the data available. Detailed data on the work done by the Bureau as well as a brief history of the property and some operating details are described in this report.

Liquid fuel oils possess certain advantages over solid fuels. Ease in handling, precision temperature control, and almost complete freedom from ash are among those considered when a liquid fuel is selected for use in industrial processing. In some instances these fuels are desirable because more heating units can e packed in a Given space where space is limited, as on snips. In other cases the' are chosen because of lower actual cost per British thermal unit absorbed, or for control of the flame to increase the capacity of furnaces, as in steel and refining.

BCR National Laboratory (formerly Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.), under a USBM con­tract (originally with the Department of Energy), monitored the installation and operation of a computer-based belt-monitoring and control system at the Barnes & Tucker Coal Co. Mine No. 20, Ebensburg, PA. The system installed was the National Coal Board's Mine Operating System (MINOS) coal transport monitoring and control system. The program objec­tive was to document (1) the installation requirements for a conveyor control system, (2) the operating experience with the system, and (3) the impact of monitoring and control on mine operation. Analysis of the system operation indicates that monitoring and control did improve belt availability significantly, and reduced downtime associated with belt delays. Economic analysis showed the increased belt availability would potentially result in significant production increase, and, therefore, excellent payback on the initial investment. The system performed satisfactorily, was well accepted by the work force, and did not increase the maintenance workload.

Longwall mining has a high potential for producing bulk production from a single face. Production is interrupted for a considerable time when it is necessary to move the equipment to a new block of coal. The frequency of such moves can be reduced by increasing the dimension of the block to be moved. Merely doubling the tonnage in a block to be mined may increase production by more than 21,000 tons per year. The time taken to move the equipment can be reduced by careful preplanning, industrial engineering analysis, and specially designed equipment. Reducing its move time from 30 days to five days can increase production by more than 25,000 tons per year. Increasing the panel dimensions and reducing the move time can give an increase in pretax profits of more than $600,000. A comprehensive bibliography is included.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of manganese from known domestic occurrences. Eight of these deposits were found to have demonstrated resources totaling 420 million metric tons with an average grade of 10 percent contained manganese. They were found to be submarginally subeconomic. Economic evaluations of the eight deposits resulted in incentive prices ranging from $8 to almost $35 per long ton unit (22.4 pounds) of contained manganese. Comparing these prices with the current market value of $1.70 per long ton unit of manganese clearly illustrates the submarginal nature of the domestic ores analyzed. These domestic resources would probably not be developed except in the case of an extreme national emergency. Production from the eight deposits would take 3 to 6 years to develop, and the final product would be manganese ore concentrate, which could be used in the production of ferromanganese. If preproduction development began in 1981, annual production would peak in 1987 with 900,000 metric tons of recoverable manganese. Thereafter, production would see a steady decline unless additional resources were located or technologic improvements were made to allow processing of lower grade material, or unless mining and processing of ocean manganese nodules began to take place.

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Spring Hill mine of the Montana Mines Corporation, Helena, Mont., is one of a series issued by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various districts. Its purpose is to summarize improved methods whereby lower costs have recently been obtained. These improvements are principally the adoption of a modified sublevel stoping method of mining the use of grizzlies underground improvements in haulage, and rage bonuses. The Sprint Hill, Trine is situated in Grizzly Gulch, 3 miles southwest of the city of Helena. Helena is on the links of the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern Railways; and the East Helena smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co. to which the concentrates from the mine are shipped, is but 6 miles east of Helena. The mine is probing 150 to 200 tons of gold ore per day, with an underground crew of about 40 men.
