The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 57 km (35 miles) long and consists of two par-allel single-track tubes with an ex-cavation diameter ranging from 8.8 to 9.5 m (28.8 to 31.2 ft). These are interlinked by cross-passages every 312 m (1,000 ft). Two multifunction stations (MFS) are located in the sections Sedrun and Faido, at one-third and two-thirds of the entire tunnel length (Fig. 1). These will be used for the diversion of trains to the other main tube via tunnel crossovers, for the housing of tech-nical infrastructure and equipment and for potential emergency stops. To reduce construction time, the GBT was divided into five sections and was excavated from several sites simultaneously. The tunnel was excavated from the two portals, Erstfeld in the north and Bodio in the south, and also from three intermediate attacks, with their corresponding access tunnels, in Amsteg and Faido and two vertical 800-m (2,624-ft) deep shafts in Sedrun.

In April 1997, Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) completed the 7,600-m (25,000-ft) primary access tunnel for the Yucca Mountain, NV proposed high-level nuclear waste site. K/PB then began boring an exploratory east-west cross drift tunnel at the site. The 2,681-m (8,796-linear ft)East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a rebuilt Robbins 5-m (16.4-ft)hard-rock tunnel boring machine(TBM) with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project was completed in eight months.

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type. (1) prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied. This is one reason why earlier projections and much of the optimism attached to longwall mining as a principal "savior" in the energy crisis should be viewed with some caution.

There was a time when an occasional failure of a tailings embankment was considered an acceptable risk associated with mining activities. This is not the case anymore. A major tailings failure today could result in the indictment of mine officials, huge fines and a possible site closure due to the loss of operating permits. As a result of this changed operational environment, tailings disposal facilities must be operated with these potential consequences in mind. Physical controls for tailings embankments are prohibitively expensive. However, the nuclear industry has developed a system of administrative controls as an alternative to physical controls. Administrative controls may be defined as control of actions, through organizations and management, using written procedures, record keeping, review and audit to assure operation of a facility in a safe manner (10 CFR 50). Administrative controls can reduce the cost of operating tailings impoundments, as well as increase the level of confidence in these facilities.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. A five steps remediation program was commissioned in 1998 for the acid generating Lorraine mine site, located in the Témiscamingue region, Quebec, Canada. It included, as the main expenditure, a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) used to limit oxygen migration. After construction of the cover, instruments were installed on site to monitor the CCBE performance. Modified oxygen consumption tests were also done to measure the oxygen flux through the cover. Results from water content and suction data, measured from 1999 to 2003, show that the capillary barriers effects are effective and that the water retention layer stays near saturation throughout the years. Oxygen fluxes estimated from monthly water content measures are generally below 10 g/m2/year. Results from modified oxygen consumption tests made on the site give almost similar oxygen fluxes. A two dimension numerical model of the Lorraine mine site was also constructed to verify that mathematical models could predict realistically the in situ conditions on such a large scale site. Numerical results obtained for three years show a good concordance between measured and calculated values. The results obtained form these different evaluation methods for the performance of a CCBE concur and confirm the efficiency of this cover in limiting acid mine generation.

Inn mining communities throughout the western United States, cows have always been part of the landscape as they graze on surrounding rangelands. Until recently, mining companies regarded these animals as something to be kept off their properties — especially any freshly reclaimed lands. During the last few years, though, this situation has begun to change. Today, cattle can be seen in a handful of mine settings, moving up and down the slopes of mine tailings and waste rock. These animals are being used by several companies to do some of the reclamation work once performed by large earth-moving equipment, mechanical spreaders, rippers and seed drillers. This is because cows can contour slopes more naturally and produce and spread soil nutrients in ways that tractors and ripping machines cannot.

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates are higher and cutter costs are lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. Disc cutters are used on a range of tunneling equipment, from pipe jacked slurry micro-TBMs less than 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter to 15 m (49 ft) in diameter, hard-rock boring TBMs. The geological conditions under which they are employed range from sands and gravels, with several bar of water pressure, to extremely hard, massive rock with UCS up to 420 MPa. Regardless of the type of machine or geology, one thing remains constant: changing worn out cutters is costly. When cutters must be changed in the middle of a tunnel, the contractor incurs the cost of downtime as well as the cost of refurbishing or replacing the cutters. In the case of catastrophic cutter failures, the project can be stopped completely for long periods, and the costs mount up rapidly while tunnel production is at a stand still. Catastrophic cutter failures include the occasion when hard-rock disc cutters are failed in groups (called a ?wipeout? phenomenon) and the operator fails to stop the machine, which results in severe damage to the cutterhead. The cause of this can be either an undetected failed cutter propagating damage to surrounding cutters or operator error in steering. Regardless of the cause, the resulting damage can take days or even weeks to repair. When cutters fail prematurely on EPB or slurry machines in certain geological conditions, it is impossible to evacuate the chamber and, therefore, impossible to get [ ] into the chamber to change the cutters. The solution is frequently an unplanned intervention shaft that must be sunk at great cost. The importance of being able to predict cutter life accurately, and in all geological conditions, cannot be overemphasized. For these reasons, cutters have been developed for specific machine types and sizes, as well as for specific geological operating conditions. Different size cutters are required for different size machines. For example, while 483- and 508-mm (19- and 20-in.) cutters are used on large diameter TBMs, it is impossible to employ cutters so large on a small micro-TBM. Also, the cutter must be designed for the specific geological conditions under which it will be operating. The disc cutter rings required to bore extremely hard rock are the most expensive of cutter rings. However, they provide little advantage in weaker rock formations where less expensive rings will do the job as well. It is important to choose the correct cutter for the machine and the geological conditions in order to get the best balance of cost and risk.

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (Pennsylvania) and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 11 (Alabama). While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (percent IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low-temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

In Australia during the 1990s, Zeni Drilling took on several demanding shaft boring contracts. This paper describes the safety, operational, technical and environmental advantages derived through the implementation of mechanized boring methods for two of these projects. The paper first describes a 3-meter (10 ft) diameter access shaft blind bored from an underground location to 440 meters (1,444 ft) deep for a gold mine in Tasmania. The construction of a 5.8-meter (19 ft) diameter, 515-meter (1,690 ft)deep ventilation shaft for a longwall coal mine in New South Wales is also described.

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

Earth Pressure tunnel boring machines are tackling difficult ground conditions that five years previous were not considered feasible. The technology has evolved that allows EPB TBMs to cross into areas that with the latest in conditioning and special design considerations are now possible to mine. This paper will review the various recent developments and those projects where these new techniques have been applied.
