Orebodies that contain more than one economically important mineral are generally evaluated by parametric cut-off grades. This approach often leads to mis-valuation of mineral deposits because cut-off grades are not based on the grades of each individual mineral and, because of the parametric formulation, are only indirectly related to the individual grade distributions. The only realistic approach is a formulation that accounts separately for each component mineral. The grid search method can be used as a means of multi-mineral cut-off grade optimization in this context. This paper describes the use of the grid search method in cut-off grade optimization for multi-mineral deposits. The authors introduce the general concepts of the method and formulate its application to cut-off grade optimization; they describe a software implementation of the method that can accommodate cut-off grade optimization for mineral deposits that contain up to three economic minerals. The practice of ilmenite smelting in electric arc furnaces has been researched and published over the last few decades. An issue that has not been addressed is the understanding of the properties of ilmenite smelting reductants, and linking these properties to the subsequent smelting behaviour in the furnace. The reduction mechanism of ilmenite smelting is not fully understood, but it is believed that the Boudouard reaction plays a role. In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect any disturbance occurring in production, while decision instruments can efficiently assist decision-makers to optimize production, reduce iterative workload, obtain better solutions, and preview possible results. Technologies for the above already exist and have been proven in the process industry, i.e. refining and smelting. Optimization is also essential for profitable and stable mining production. Real-time monitoring has already taken hold in mining operations, especially in surface mining, while optimization techniques have also been widely used in underground mining, particularly for planning and scheduling. This review is limited to the hard-rock mining production of metallic ores such as gold and copper. It reviews optimization techniques developed for mine planning and scheduling, and communication technologies suitable for underground applications. It also presents control features for individual operation units, and discusses the technical viability of a mining production real-time optimization (MPRTO) system for underground mines, with possible benefits and challenges. Operational disturbances always occur in mine production. An MPRTO system can be useful to maintain operational effectiveness and efficiency by allowing quick changes to short-term plans. This paper briefly describes the MPRTO system, including the input, output, and basic algorithms. The technical prerequisites for the system specified here are already available. The dimension stone industry is not widely known or appreciated within the mainstream mining industry. This is in spite of the fact that the industry has grown at an average of over 7% per annum since 1980, and is estimated to now have a global turnover in excess of US$ 60 Billion per annum. Production technologies, particularly in the developed world where labour costs are high, have developed rapidly over the past two decades. Aligned with this, there has been a significant trend in adoption of a more professional mining approach in the exploration for and operation of dimension stone quarries. In fact, in the experience of the authors, mining a dimension stone deposit successfully if often more challenging from a mining engineering point of view than many conventional surface mines. This paper gives an overview of the industry and then proceeds to discuss best practice in exploration for dimension stone and to outline the latest technologies applied in mining of dimension stone. These technologies are varied and the specific combination of technologies applied in any given quarry is determined by both the physical properties of the material as well as the influence of geology which significantly impacts on the recovery of saleable material and hence the economics of the quarry.

To date, Anglo Research has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in the AMIRA P9 (AMIRA International Limited), to develop comminution and flotation models for several Anglo Base Metals and, to a lesser degree, Anglo Platinum flotation plants. Plant optimization is thus achieved through steady-state sampling, model-fitting and simulation using the JK SimMet and JK SimFloat software packages. The surveys can vary depending on the needs of the plant/client. The survey can therefore include as little as a single piece of equipment, an entire milling/flotation circuit, or a complete circuit from primary comminution to final flotation concentrate (i.e. the ?integrated survey?). The presence of the AR team on-site usually precipitates in face-value observations that can lead to initial improvements. This stems from the knowledge-sharing on best practice that exists in parallel with the surveys. Numerous (reasonable) changes can then be simulated, thus indicating the optimization step most likely to result in the best efficiency improvements. The simulations can include changes in the flowsheet, ore characteristics, mill loads, grinding media size, change in grind, flotation residence time, air hold-up and several more. Plant surveys can result in process changes that provide the plant with either: higher plant tonnage, improved plant grind, additional flotation recovery and/or improved product grade. The additional benefit of performing an integrated plant survey is that the effects of an optimization change in the comminution circuit can be simulated using the flotation model. This paper describes a number of case studies where individual and integrated plant surveys were conducted by AR for Anglo Base Metals.

A brief history of channel sampling in South African gold mines is followed by a chronicle of different sampling events and sampling methods that used the traditional ?hammer and chisel? approach as well as diamond core extraction of the sample. The problems associated with each method of sample collection are documented and the use of a laser scanner to measure the exact volumes of sample material extracted from a correctly delimited sample site are considered. Areas where increment delimitation errors (IDEs), increment extraction errors (IEEs), increment weighting errors (IWEs), and increment preparation errors (IPEs) occur were investigated. A ?simulated chip sample model? is introduced and provides the basis for comparing the percentages of error introduced as a result of improper sampling. The heterogeneity experiment showed that reefs that are more homogenous tend have lower extraction errors than the more complex carbon-rich reefs, which may contribute to understanding the poor mine call factor on mines exploiting the latter types of reef. Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.

Hydrometallurgical processing of complex ores and concentrates is becoming increasingly important as the mining and metallurgical industry seeks to exploit mineral deposits that are difficult to treat using conventional mineral processing and pyrometallurgical technologies. Mineral processing is often challenged by the difficulty or inability to separate valuable minerals into marketable concentrates. Hydrometallurgical processing, using selective leaching technology, can often ?chemically beneficiate? such difficult deposits. Pyrometallurgical treatment of base metal concentrates is capital intensive and subject to ever more stringent environmental control. Hydrometallurgical processing is generally lower in capital cost for an equivalent metal production rate and avoids the gas and dust issues associated with pyrometallurgical processing. The possibility of by-product recovery may also increase with hydrometallurgical treatment. Two examples of new technology or flowsheet development for treatment of complex ores and concentrates are used as illustration. These include the El Boleo process of Baja Mining for recovery of copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese from a complex clayey ore and the PLATSOL? process for recovery of copper, nickel, cobalt, platinum, palladium and gold from a bulk sulphide concentrate.

The West Wits Line first began yielding gold in the mid-1930s and is among South Africa's leading gold-producing areas. Gold mining operations are carried out amidst the occurrence of seismic events which cause both damage to underground excavations and injury and loss of life to production personnel. The feasibility of establishing a system to minotor the seismicity on all the Gold Fields mines was investigated during the early 1980s. This led to the establishment of a centralized seismic network in 1981. The system was structured around three major objectives. It uses Perkin Elmer (now Concurrent Computer Corporation) 16 and 32 bit mini-computers. The hardware in use at both the central and remote sites is outlined, giving a good insight into the role of computers in the system. The system software reveals the fast flow of data through the network; it can be divided into three categories: (1) data logging and transmission - remote sites, (2) data capture and communications - central site, (3) applications and research - central site. Several examples are given which show how the system is measuring up to its objectives. These case studies also indicate how the computers are effective in representing the seismic data collected. It is concluded that the use of computers enables the pin-pointing of seismic events on the West Wits Line within about 3 -4 minutes of their occurrence. The choice of hardware is largely dependent on the objectives of system, and the Gold Fields Network has chosen mini-computers because of the speed of communication and the large amount of data and storage required for research applications.

China?s engagement with the African continent has increased impressively in the past decade. Even though China is not the African continent?s largest stakeholder, the rapidly increasing engagement is evident in the huge number of Chinese migrants that have come to Africa in the wake of unprecedented trade and investment levels, as well as in increasing diplomatic and political interactions, which has taken most other commercial partners by surprise. All but four countries in Africa have adopted the ?One China?1 policy stance; and in so doing opened the door for new or strengthened commercial dealings with China, including increasing investments into Africa?s extractive industries. This has been particularly evident since the turn of the century, with a clear shift in China?s policy towards Africa elevating the continent in China?s foreign policy objectives. As such, Africa has become a strategic focus2 for Chinese outward bound and internationalizing companies, especially in the extractive industries. This planned shift in focus is based largely on geo-strategic and commercial needs and interests, rather than previous ideological ones.3

Based on many years experience, the well proven Swiss Tunnel Seismic Prediction System TSP has been substantially augmented for online geological prognosis in underground construction. In its latest version, the Integrated Seismic Imaging System ISIS provides high resolution seismic images of the rock mass around a tunnel face via an array of standard anchor rods. These rods contain 3D-geophones at their tips and can be readily installed during excavation work. A further innovative component of the system is the newly developed high-power repetitive source for application in hard rock: a pneumatic hammer with laser triggering to be mounted on construction machinery. A user-friendly software package permits online data acquisition and processing, 3D-visualization, and a first geological interpretation. Tomographic images of compressional and shear wave velocity fields at fault zones in metamorphic rock of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Central Alps are presented. Das langjährig bewährte Schweizer Tunnelseismische Vorauserkundungssystem TSP wurde inzwischen wesentlich weiterentwickelt. In seiner neuen Version, dem Integrierten Seismischen Imaging System ISIS, ermöglicht es hochauflösende seismische Abbildungen des Gebirges im Vorfeld und Umfeld einer Tunnelauffahrung mit Hilfe einer Anordnung von Felsankern, die an ihren Spitzen 3-Komponenten-Geophone enthalten. Eine weitere Neuerung von ISIS ist die pneumatische Hochleistungs-Impulsquelle mit Laser-Triggering. Eine benutzerfreundliche, interaktive Software ermöglicht die online Datenerfassung und -auswertung, 3D-Visualisierung und eine erste geologische Interpretation. Tomografische Abbildungen von Kompressions- und Scherwellengeschwindigkeitsfeldern an Störungszonen in metamorphem Gestein des Gotthard-Basistunnels werden gezeigt. Basé sur de nombreuses années d’expérience, le système suisse, bien établit, de reconnaissance sismique à l’avancement des tunnels (système TSP), a été sensiblement amélioré pour obtenir une prévision géologique en temps réel durant l’avancement de travaux souterrains. Sa dernière version, le Système Intégré d’Imagerie Sismique (ISIS), fournit des images sismiques haute-résolution du massif rocheux à l’avant d’un tunnel grâce à un réseau de tiges d’ancrage standard. Ces tiges, équipées à leur extrémité de géophones 3 composantes, s’installent très aisément durant les travaux d’excavation habituels. Le élément d’innovation récente concern le nouvelle source très répétitive et de forte puissance pour les applications aux roches dures: un marteau pneumatique déclenché par un système à laser. Un ensemble de programmes informatiques convivial permet l’acquisition et le traitement en temps réel des signaux et produit une vue 3D ainsi qu’une première interprétation géologique. Nous présenterons des images de réflexion d’ondes de compression et de cisaillement ainsi que des inversions tomographiques de zones de faille dans des terrains métamorphiques obtenues à l’occasion du creusement du tunnel de base du Gothard, dans les alpes centrales.

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

Gold Fields is the world?s fourth largest gold producer with operations in South Africa, Australia, Ghana and South America. All of Gold Fields? South African Operations are located in the Witwatersrand Basin and are intermediate to deep level underground mines exploiting gold bearing, shallow dipping tabular orebodies, which have collectively produced over 50 kt (1,608 Moz) of gold over a period of more than 100 years. Although the use of Monte Carlo as a business tool was introduced in 1964, it has only been in the last 30 years that it has gained increasing acceptance within the mining industry. However, the application thereof has been mostly limited to determination of risk in project areas. This paper however, considers the possibility of using Monte Carlo simulations to asses the underlying ?Root Cause? criteria critical to the operations management of existing mining operations. Currently, working operations have a distinct advantage over project areas as they have a wealth of historical information at hand. This, in turn, can be utilized to model distributions and relationships that can be used in Monte Carlo simulations, the results of which can be analysed to determine areas of concern. Projects can then be set up to ameliorate the effects of these and in turn reduce the risk of not achieving the operational targets. It is here that it must be stated emphatically that it should be the ?root causes? and the associated relationships that need to be emplaced within the model in order to achieve results that reflect the true causal relationship. The paper outlines possible sources of ?root cause? relationships and considers the outcomes of these in a case study on a large South African Gold Mine.

This paper shows, through a case study, the impact of multivariate grade modelling upon mine design and mine planning. A deposit explored by drill holes is considered, in which the grades of five elements (copper, silver, molybdenum, arsenic, and antimony) are of interest. Forty alternative models of the deposit are constructed by fitting the joint correlation structure of the grade variables and using conditional cosimulation. In addition, a reference model, obtained by averaging the alternative models, is also considered. The study shows that the resulting mine design (final pit characteristics and production schedules) is sensitive to the grade model under consideration, and that the design based on the reference model may not be optimal when compared to the alternative models based on cosimulation. However, when assuming a given long-term plan and extraction sequence, the grades and net present value (NPV) calculated on the reference model are unbiased with respect to those calculated on the alternative models with the same extraction sequence. The latter allow assessing the possible dispersion of the actual grades and NPV around their expected values, and are useful for the planner in order to determine the probability of meeting given production targets and of exceeding or falling short of given threshold grades. Additionally, unlike cosimulation, the separate simulation of each grade variable leads to unrealistic resource models and to biased results in mine design and mine planning. This approach should therefore be avoided, unless the grade variables are spatially uncorrelated.

Change management and training initiatives in remote rural settings in Africa are generally difficult to implement successfully due to factors such as varying levels of education, multiple nationalities and languages as well as cultures in one workplace. The challenge has always been the ability to implement change management and training initiatives that will have an impact despite these differences. Essentially this requires that the change and training interventions employed are applicable and should work well with a wide range of individuals sitting in one room ? in practice this can vary from semi-literate workers to engineers with PhDs. In this paper we will share the theory behind behaviour-based change management and training and present a case study that reviews an actual supply chain improvement and sustainability implementation at a Zambian copper mine. The case study explains the results achieved as well as the interventions employed to achieve these results in a multidimensional organizational environment. This paper is relevant to delegates who are faced with implementing changes or training in a similar mining environment. The aim is to determine the conditions which indicate the triggering and evolution of the deformation phenomena. Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. The safety factor on its own is thus not a reliable predictor of longterm stability of pillars. Keywords coal pillar, stable pillar cases, pillar collapse, pillar data base.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimetre precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many mines in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Zambia, Chile and the United States. Greater than 70 rock falls and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tonnes) have been monitored, and on every occasion precursor ?warning? movements were recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines.
