These have been laid on the chairs and before calling for their adoption I would like to make a few comments. The Accounts show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124 and our Honorary Treasurer, Mr D. G. Maxwell, will in due course comment on this. "To reduce production costs and increase efficiency in ageing coal mines, a system that utilizes two shearers in a fully mechanized longwall working face is proposed. Using theoretical and engineering experience, three issues pertaining to the system were determined: (a) the two-shearer mining technique; (b) matching and modifying the equipment; (c) and coal-cutting task allocation for each shearer. Two mining processes are proposed, with the two shearers travelling in either the same or opposing directions. To avoid breakage of chains and pan extrusion of the armoured face conveyor (AFC), the length of the AFC ‘snake’ was controlled. To ensure continuous cutting and transporting of coal, the cross-sectional dimensions of the AFC were checked and the shearer closer to the head drive was modified. Based on the assumption of equal cutting times for each shearer, the meeting position of the two shearers was obtained by using a theoretical model of mining task allocation. Application of this technique at No. 2 Jining Mine, China, has shown remarkable benefits: daily production capacity was increased by 54% and personnel efficiency was improved by 33 t/d per person. IntroductionAll coal mines aim to increase the unit output of the working face to reduce mining costs and improve the economic efficiency of the operation. To achieve this goal, a production model known as one mining face of the mining area has been adopted by most Chinese coal mines (Hu, Meng, and Zhu, 2008; Zhang, Zhang, and Wang, 2000). Under these conditions, the main technical approaches to maximize the output are increasing the width of the working face (Qu, Xu, and Xue, 2009) and accelerating the advancing speed (Robbins, 2000). In coalfields with shallow seams, the width of a fully mechanized face exceeds 300 m (Ju and Zhu, 2015; Fu, Song, and Xing, 2010); in coalfields with deep seams, the width of the face is usually greater than 240 m (Liu et al., 2016; Li et al., 2013). The term ‘super-long working face’ was proposed to describe working faces with a width of over 240 m (Zhao and Song, 2016; Xu et al, 2007) in China. To support these long working faces with rapid advancing speeds, high-powered mining equipment is required (Kulshreshtha and Parikh, 2001, 2002; Tu et al., 2009; Mishra, Sugla,and Singha, 2013). This is easily achieved in newly built mines, but is not a good choice for ageing mines because of the low return on a high investment on account of the limited remaining resources. It is therefore difficult for ageing mines to significantly increase their unit output with the existing mining equipment. This study focused on this problem: two shearers were applied to a longwall fully mechanized working face (LFMWF) to achieve increased unit output."

The use of plastics in the coal mining industry is making slow progress whereas these materials could make a greater contribution to safety, to a reduction of working costs and to the higher productivity of mine workers. Possibly the reluctance to experiment with the new material of our age is due to the low profit margin of coal mining. This note has been prepared to present a brief survey of what has been done in the last few years and to mention some of the investigations the author has made and is making in an attempt to develop more use of plastics in the industry. Some of the plastics used on the mines have taken their place in the industry in the same manner that they are used in everyday life while others have been introduced because there has been a need for them. New uses and applications are being developed and these are the ones that are most interesting. The plastic that is specially developed to give the maximum benefit and not the one that is a modification of some other everyday product is the next development in the field. Many manufacturers are keen to promote such investigation but are not aware of the problems the mines wish to solve and therefore it is only through management itself that this development can be carried out. This note deals with plastic material under three headings: (a) Plastic as the superior material, and briefly describes how plastic has replaced a few major items which are better when made from plastic. (b) Plastics of necessity, being a short summary of how plastics had to be introduced because of laws and conditions making it a necessity. (c) Development of new ideas, being briefly some of the ideas being developed overseas and some of the ideas being tried by the author. Plastic items in common use such as in housing, electric cables, laboratory equipment, awnings, nylon bearings, locomotive brake linings, etc. being well known are not discussed. PLASTIC AS THE SUPERIOR MATERIAL Plastic belting underground Following a fire in a belt road in England resulting in the deaths of many workers, and subsequently a fire accompanied by fatalities in a belt road in a mine in this country, a law was introduced which states that only flameproof belting is to be used underground. This ruling forced the mines to use P.V.A. belting as no other was available. This belting has non-inflammable characteristics that are superior to rubber. Due to the high tension on long-distance belts used today the need for stronger belting material called for something better than cotton and the answer to this was nylon. Nylon also has the ability to withstand dry-rot which reduces the life of a belt very quickly.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Given by Mr J. K. E. DOUGLAS, M.Se. (Eng.) (Rand) SYNOPSIS Lime is the most widely used and the cheapest chemical alkali known to man and virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture. Its use goes back to the earliest days of man and many ancient buildings and writings bear testimony to this. The manufacture of lime involves quarrying, crushing and screening of limestone and the burning of the sized stone in kilns of which there are several types. The earliest kilns were of very crude design and only in comparatively recent times have large capacity, automated and scientifically controlled kilns been developed. The history of the South African lime industry is largely that of the three main lime companies and their story is briefly told. No other material used in industry has a greater diversity of uses or more varied functions and lime has applications in most South African industries. The main applications are in the production of gold and uranium, iron, steel and ferrochrome, carbide, sugar and paper and for water treatment, agriculture and building. The Republic is well endowed with high quality limestone and the conclusion is drawn that many other minerals will have been exhausted before we run out of limestone with which to process them. The expansion of the lime industry has in the past kept pace with the requirements of industry and the future demand is expected to grow in parallel with the growth of these industries. Since the war this growth has been phenomenal and with our expanding populations and abundance of raw materials it should continue in the years ahead. Limiting factors are the shortage of skilled labour and the distance from export markets. Confidence is expressed that the challenges of the future will be met and that the lime industry will continue to make an important contribution to the growth and prosperity of South Africa. INTRODUCTION Lime, gentlemen, is known to all of you. Like myself, most of you have undoubtedly found it to be, on the appropriate occasion, a most pleasant flavouring for gin. But this lime, or rather its juice, was in earlier days more than just a flavouring. In the days of sail it was vital to the health of sailors as a deterrant against the scourge of all sea-going men-scurvy. It thus played a small but important role in the opening-up of trade routes around the world on which was based the original wealth of many of today's more advanced nations. I propose to address you on the subject of lime this evening, not the citrus variety I have just mentioned, but the most widely-used and cheapest alkali known to man, which, largely unsung, plays an even more vital part in modern industry than did its namesake in the development of inter-continental trade. In the time at my disposal, I propose to tell you something of the history, geology and technology of lime manufacture. Then I will briefly sketch for you the development of this industry in South Africa and indicate the role it plays in supplying the requirements of many of our important industries. Finally we will attempt to look into the future. The importance of this chemical alkali to our modern civilization is seldom fully appreciated-virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture, either directly or indirectly. It is one of those basic materials, along with iron, coal, sulphur, salt and petroleum without which industry and, in fact, our modern way of living could not exist. Fortunately, nature has endowed the world with a plentiful supply of the limestone from which lime is derived and most countries have deposits adequate for their requirements. As a result, not only has there been little trade in lime products between countries but in the past the widespread occurrences of limestone have set a pattern of numerous small plants each serving a limited area. These plants were generally crude affairs incapable of producing a quality product. It is not surprising that, in an industry comprised of small producers with limited financial resources and in fierce competition with each other, there was little interchange of information. Technological development was therefore slow and the industry tended to be regarded as a backyard operation. Its popularity was not enhanced by the fact that lime is difficult and unpleasant to handle if proper facilities are not provided. In recent years the lime industry has undergone very radical changes to meet the more exacting requirements of today's more sophisticated consumers. Only since the war have the larger companies emerged with proper management, highly mechanized plants and a scientific approach. HISTORY Lime was one of the first chemical reagents used by man and consequently lime burning is one of the oldest of the chemical industries. The use of limestone dates back to the stone age when primitive man used limestone to build fireplaces, construct shelters and make crude tools and weapons. It is probable that lime was first discovered by him when the stone in these fireplaces disintegrated to a white powder which he could use for decorative purposes. The first recorded use of limestone was when huge blocks of limestone were used to build the pyramids of Egypt in 4,000 to 2,000 RC. It was not long after this that the beauty of marble, which is in fact a limestone, came to be appreciated and it found wide application in sculpturing and for decorative wall construction. Originally lime, mixed with sand, was used mainly as a mortar for building purposes, the earliest record of its use for chemical purposes being in 350 B.C. in a report of the wreck near Marseilles of a ship carrying a cargo of linen and lime 'for its bleaching'1. Cato mentioned the burning of lime kilns in 184 B.C. and the Romans made extensive use of both limestone and lime for highway construction. Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

An editorial in the April 1990 edition of Mining Magazine is worth a wider audience in South Africa, particularly as the SAIMM enters its own centenary decade and the process of change in the minerals industry world-wide makes increasing demands on the professionalism of its leaders. The editorial considers the changing status of engineers, who up to the 1880s had been held in high regard by society. Alumina and bauxite Economists forecast a slower economic growth rate in 1990, but expect continued increase in demand for aluminum at a 3 per cent annual rate during the decade. Structural and numerical analysis Struceng & Femcad (structural analysis and finiteelement method) is a conference and exhibition that is to be held in Grenoble (France) on 17th and 18th October, 1990. JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

In view of this the Chairman proposed that the paper on flash smelting be introduced and discussed first, after which the remaining three papers would be introduced followed by discussion on all three.Dr Cocquerel, who presented the first paper, used some typical flow diagrams to illustrate the process and stated that the program considered only steady-state operations and did not take into account the dynamical changes. Subjective judgment was necessary for the preparation of input data and some degree of user appreciation was required.Dr Cocquerel said that no work bad yet been done on an optimization program, but that this was being considered. Such a program would require a large amount of physical and chemical data which were not yet available. The variables to be optimized were the energy and material consumptions and the loss of metal in the slag.The Chairman opened the discussion by asking Dr Cocquerel if he could give a brief description of the flash smelting process for the benefit of those not familiar with the subject. Dr Coquerel replied that in the Outokumpu process con¬centrates were injected directly into the furnace, and that the process was somewhat analogous to flash distillation or evaporation processes, but was perhaps closer to the burning of pulverized fuel.The process had two distinct advantages. First, the heat evolved in the smelting reaction was used to heat the furnace, which resulted in less fuel consumption, and, second, the effluent gases were cheaper to treat than the effluent gases from other pyrometallurgical processes. This was important particularly in view of the current interest in pollution problems.Mr P. Marais thought that the authors had done themselves an injustice by not including details of the very complex processes taking place in the furnace."

Most flotation plants use a static reagent scheme, i.e., a set combination of collectors, frothers, and modifiers. This scheme is usually developed and refined over time to deliver optimal (not necessarily the highest) performance when the major ore types are fed to the plant. However, when ore types or mineralogy coming to the plant change substantially (and this often happens as different areas of the pit(s) are mined and crushed at the same time), there are upsets in the process, typically leading to lower recoveries. Adapting to this variability is usually done only when performance drastically suffers, and the changes made may be too late and bring additional variability in performance. The premise for SmartFloat™ is that the reagent suite needs to be dynamic, adapting continuously to changes in the ore and operating conditions. Solvay has combined advanced analytics and data science techniques with its expertise in flotation reagent chemistry to systematically and automatically achieve the above, and in real time. Thus, SmartFloat™ is optimizing the reagent suite continuously, removing the additional variability created by belated human interactions resulting in a better and more stable process. In addition, this advanced approach allows for continuous improvement by identifying poor performing ore domains and improving the reagent suite using Solvay’s FM-100 approach to design appropriate solutions.

RyderTaken as a whole, the difference between the four papers in this session were perhaps more illuminating than their similarities. The titles of the first and second papers contained the word 'simulation', and in both papers random number generation was relied upon in the selection of inputs from empirical distributions, but the nature of the models to which these values were inputs were quite different. The third paper displayed another method of uniting the empirical and the theoretical in a linear programming formulation whose matrix coefficients were measured empirically, and here some apt remarks on computer implementation were included. This paved the way for the last paper which abandoned all theoretical pretensions in favour of a detailed description of computer implementation and perhaps as a result gave rise to the most feeling audience participation.The systems mentioned were developed for the iron, petrol, copper and gold producing industries in the US, Canada, Zambia and South Africa..As with all the parallel sessions, contributions from the floor may have been limited by the shorter time available to delegates to acquaint themselves with the papers before the session. In spite of this, and due largely to the active chairman¬ship of Dr Cook, the discussion during the session which is summarized here contributed much to the information contained in the papers themselves.In his presentation, Dr Calder summarized his paper. He expected that simulation would be used in future on an almost universal basis in open pit mining. It could contribute new knowledge more cheaply than experimentation in the flea For example, this study had shown what was previously thought to be a matter of more shovels and trucks was really a blasting problem, and improving blasting had increased production to the desired level. The simulation had shown that uniformity of truck performance was a desirable factor. It had also been used to study the advisability of a dispatching system.Dr Ramani contended that where equipment characteristics were available, deterministic standard simulation could adequately simulate systems in which interference occurred. Operator performance could be measured against perfor¬mance curves predicted by standard simulation and poor operators spotted and retrained. The present system did not take into account variability in truck loading, for instance. Dr Calder replied that if the number of variables was large, the standard approach became too complicated for operating personnel to follow. He admitted he had not tried it. The variability of truck loading could be coped with easily using the Monte Carlo approach. Operator variability was already incorporated because the time studies are actual."

My opportunity to serve as President of the prestigious Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) was made possible by an Anglo American scholarship 39 years ago—a pivotal moment that set me on a career path spanning various roles and start-up ventures in the mining industry. Over the past decade, I have been privileged to broaden my experience by consulting across diverse industries globally. This exposure revealed something profound: what I had previously considered mining-specific challenges are, in fact, universal across many sectors. At its core, a mining operation is a complex system of interconnected activities—from exploration through mining operations like drill and blast, load and haul, to beneficiation, and outbound logistics. My cross-industry work has clearly shown that diverse sectors, such as chocolate manufacturing, tissue paper production, toilet paper converting facilities, labgrown diamonds, or high-tech equipment lifecycle management, all rely on value streams of interconnected activities to transform products. The objective is to maximise throughput while effectively managing performance variability. The primary difference lies solely in the specific technical expertise required for each industry, such as chemical, mining, processing, or metallurgical engineering. Across all these industries, I have observed a consistent pattern, that is, performance is primarily driven by individual efforts, where people react and work diligently as situations unfold in real-time. General managers and their teams often operate tactically, focusing on explaining yesterday’s poor performance rather than proactively setting up operations for success. This often resembles an ‘‘under-7s soccer match’’, with everyone chasing the ball. The common response to issues is to add more ad hoc meetings. This effort-driven organisational behaviour persists regardless of whether operations are greenfield digital manufacturing facilities, advanced digital mines with advanced process control, or operations run on paper and Excel spreadsheets for data acquisition. Paradoxically, more real-time data can lead to increased data noise, greater indecision, and sometimes, lower performance. Despite value streams often operating significantly below capacity, organisations continue to invest heavily in additional equipment or in ‘‘glossy brochure promises’’ of Industry 4.0 digital technology and real-time data solutions, which frequently fail to deliver value. This leads to a critical question: Have we underinvested in our most valuable resource— people? Even Tesla faced this challenge with their underperforming fully automated Model X facility. We must shift our focus to designing the ecosystem, or operating model, of our organisations. This extends beyond the traditional triad of people, process, and technology, and moves beyond simplistic views of change management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to add significant value, but it also introduces another layer of complexity into designing the organisation of the future. My full presidential address below at the SAIMM AGM discussed the symptoms of an effort-driven organisation and covered the fundamental building blocks and requirements of an operating model, including recommendations on implementing a people-centric approach.

Spiral concentrators are widely applied to beneficiate commodities such as Cr2O3, mineral sands, and ferrochrome. The application of spirals for heavy minerals has been limited to a feed top size of 1 mm. At particle sizes larger than this, friction retards heavy particles and the particles' primary velocity approaches zero, resulting in a solids build-up, therefore inhibiting further separation. Recently, a new Multotec SC25 spiral model was introduced to the industry, which aids in beneficiating particles of up to 3 mm, with successes having been demonstrated in ferrochrome slag and titanium-bearing minerals. This spiral also has potential in electronic waste applications. This paper examines the applicability of the SC25 spiral in coarse Cr2O3 recovery. This stems from the fact that junior chrome miners tend to discard particles larger than 1 mm as they neither have milling nor dense media circuits. Also, alluvial chrome miners discard +1 mm even though this size fraction contains recoverable and liberated Cr2O3. The SC25 spiral has shown better Cr2O3 separation efficiencies than the SC21 model and with higher SiO2 rejection at saleable grades, thus providing an additional revenue stream specifically for the coarser (+820 μm) size fractions.
