The mining industry has yet to fully accept and embrace the strategic role of technology and innovation in successful business planning and execution. In this study, we empirically determine the factors that influence acceptance of technology solutions in the mining industry in South Africa, assess critical success factors influencing adoption of advanced technology in the South African mining industry, and explore challenges faced by the mining industry in South Africa in adopting advanced technology in its operations. Thematic content analysis is employed in the data analysis. Results show that critical success factors to the adoption of mining technology include learning culture, knowledge sharing, high labour costs, and behaviour of other firms in the industry; commonly identified challenges include inadequate engagement with external stakeholders, uncertainties, the cyclical nature of the sector, and high risk related to the adoption of unproven technology and performance systems focused on volumetric production. The study encourages mining companies to implement usage of technology. This can be properly done through regular engagement with the Minerals Council South Africa.

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

There are many underground mining software tools available to plan and schedule the development of underground mines. A shortfall of these tools is the optimization of the underground equipment and strategy in order to maximize the development rate. This paper will illustrate how the SimMine® software was used to maximize underground development at Petra Diamonds' Cullinan Diamond Mine. It will also determine the effect of various development strategies and equipment capacities on the underground development rate and pinpoint potential bottlenecks in the mine development cycle.

PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The 'possible operating range' of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation's Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Mr Roman replied that, while normal administrative costs were accounted for, the additional costs incurred in appointing and laying off staff were not taken into account."

The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. n this study, silver and palladium nanoparticulate inks with different metal-binder ratios were screen-printed onto a paper substrate. The printed layers comprised the metal nanoparticles and an ethylcellulose binder. The layers are not typical metal composites due to the low concentration of binder and high porosity. The electrical sheet resistivity of each particle concentration was measured, and the data fitted using the scaling law of percolation theory and the general effective media (GEM) equation. The percolation parameters, i.e. the percolation threshold and the critical exponent, for each system were determined from the fits and compared. The percolation threshold for the palladium layer (39.8 wt%) was lower than that found for the silver layer (44.9 wt%). The critical exponents determined for the palladium and silver layers were both lower than the universal value for three-dimensional percolation systems. Microscopy observations indicate that the difference in the percolation threshold for the two layers can be attributed to variations in their microstructure.

"A hierarchical four-character code designed for geological and allied data may be used to log exploration drill-holes and store the information on magnetic media. The code is intended for use in semi-free format and permits the collection of as much, or as little, data as the geologist may require for the purpose in hand. A method of data storage by variable length records is discussed.Information may be retrieved by means of a simple enquiry language. Optional output facilities could allow the retrieval of data in a form suitable for direct input to a contouring package. The enquiry parameters and interrogation program can thus provide the interface between the data bank and associated application systems."

Dry deep screening is an important method of classifying moist fine mineral. The rigid-flexible coupled elastic screening technology can simultaneously solve the problem of traditional screen surface plugging and the low service life of a screen surface in the process of deep screening. In this paper, two kinds of rigid-flexible coupled elastic screen surfaces were introduced. The structural characteristics of a screen surface were studied. The mechanism of a rigid flexible coupled elastic screen surface to overcome hole blockage was revealed. Finally, 3 mm and 6 mm screening experiments were carried out. When the external moisture content was below 12.79% for the 6 mm dry screening experiment of elastic rod screen surface, the screening efficiency was above 81%. When the external moisture content was below 11.31% for the 3 mm dry screening experiment of elastic screen surface based on ball hitting, the screening efficiency was above 83%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data was extracted from various sources to develop qualitative ternary and tetrahedral plots differentiating mineralogy, bond work index (BWi) and hardness of ore bodies at different mine sites. A large number of historic reports and compiled characterization laboratory data were used to create a searchable "data lake." The data lake provides a means to locate, consolidate, and visually represent XRD from disparate sources. Visualizations with large amounts of mineral ore XRD characterization data provide a qualitative assessment of ore properties, including comminution qualities such as material hardness. The visual map can be employed to quickly estimate expected ore character and behavior, given XRD analysis of samples from newly characterized and unfamiliar ore. Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a directed-energy deposition technology that uses arc welding procedures to produce computer-aided designed parts, such as three-dimensional printed metal components. A challenge of additive manufacturing is the anisotropy. Interstitial elements play a significant role in the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V of different grades. In this research, the mechanical properties of Grade 5 and Grade 23 Ti6Al4V were compared for this application. Samples were extracted from WAAM-produced Ti6Al4V walls in different directions (horizontal and vertical) and at different positions (top and bottom). The samples were subjected to optical microscopy and tensile and hardness tests. Grade 5 Ti6Al4V samples were found to have greater strength, greater hardness, and lower ductility, owing to the higher content of interstitial elements compared with Grade 23. The bottom samples had higher strength than the top samples, which is attributed to thermal cycling during manufacturing, resulting in different microstructures.

Mixed fatty acids, such as oxidised paraffin soap, are frequently used as a substitute for oleic acid in flotation of scheelite in China. Not only because it is cheaper than oleic acid, but also because it is superior in flotation performance to oleic acid. This superiority is generally attributed to the mixed fatty acids' synergistic effect. In this paper, the synergistic effect of oxidised paraffin soap was investigated. We found it mainly consists of a series of saturated fatty acid salts, with six to nineteen carbon atoms. All the contained fatty acids were classified into four groups based on their chain length to make the research work practical. Also, the groups were labelled as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order. The research was simplified into studying the synergistic effect of four equivalent collectors, instead of fourteen fatty acids. It is justified by the fact that neighbouring fatty acids are expected to have a similar flotation performance. The synergistic effect of the four groups of fatty acids was studied by single-mineral flotation with single groups, binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and the full component, as collector respectively. The flotation performance index and synergy value were introduced to evaluate flotation performance and synergistic effect of groups, respectively. The results show that the mixture 1+2+3 has the strongest synergy of all followed by the mixtures 1+3 and 2+3. The mixture 3+4 and 1+2, on the other hand, have negative synergy. The synergistic effect of mixtures of groups indicate that being consecutive in length and a broad range of lengths are vital for fatty acids to enhance synergy. Group 3 is fundamental for the collecting action of 733 oxidised paraffin soap in the flotation of scheelite. The fatty acid soap in group 4 is not suitable for flotation due to its low solubility. Sampling and metallurgical testwork during various phases of engineering studies is of paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flowsheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring that appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical testwork support the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development. The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical testwork are just as important as the metallurgical testwork itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should consider the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy, and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical testwork program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design. The authors have observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical testwork carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. Some designs are based on benchmarks of apparently similar ore bodies or rely on buoyant metal prices supporting cash flows until rectifications can be implemented. The results of prospecting operations involving geological data and a large number of geochemical determinations of the metal content of soil samples are plotted and evaluated by computer. Anomalous areas are identified in each type of environment by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. The anomalies are plotted to permit correlation with geographical or geological features. Ranking of prospecting targets is made using geographic pattern, geology, absolute value and metal ratios. Three short case histories are presented.

Ilmenite is the principal feedstock for producing TiO2 - used in paints, plastics and paper and the production of Ti metal. The Brahmaputra River system in Bangladesh represents a potentially new source of ilmenite concentrated within sandbar placer deposits and the current study presents results from beneficiation and characterisation studies conducted on Brahmaputra River Fe-Ti oxides. Characteristic of fluvial systems, the ilmenite concentration is low (~0.5 wt-%), however extensive annual dredging for waterway navigation provides the economic impetus to recover saleable ilmenite. The Fe-Ti oxide suite derived from magnetic fractionation comprises homogeneous ilmenite, titanohematite and hematite, although many grains exhibit complex exsolution within the (Ilm-Hem)ss series. The textural variability results in difficulty generating a pure ilmenite feedstock with the bulk concentrate typically being low in TiO2, containing 31.0 wt-%TiO2 and 62.7 wt-% (Fe2O3). Results are interpreted via an analysis of the implications for producing a commercial-grade ilmenite concentrate suitable for TiO2 production. "The hydrofluoric acid (HF) industry in South Africa uses normalized mild steel (SA 516 Gr 70) for the storage and distribution of its technical-grade product (70% HF). The technical-grade acid is split from the anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) product during distillation just after HF is produced, in a stainless-steel-lined kiln, from the reaction of calcium fluoride (CaF2) with sulphuric acid (H2SO4). Uniform corrosion of the storage tanks is mitigated during commissioning by contacting the steel with 70% HF. A corrosive reaction takes place (2H+ + 2F- + Fe - H2 + FeF2) to form scale inside the tank which diminishes the attack of the steel by fresh HF, thus prolonging the service life expectancy of the vessels. This iron fluoride scale in the vessel grows continually, resulting in corrosion of the vessels continuing at a predictable rate (approx.0.5 mm/a) since the first commissioning of the tanks at Necsa in 1993. In early 2012, an increase in the average corrosion rate of the tanks to 3 mm/a measured at and below the liquid band in the storage vessels was noted. Three months later the corrosion rate had increased to 30 mm/a, just before the first leak from the tank was detected. The tanks were decommissioned shortly afterwards and an investigation revealed that the rapid corrosion was due to the presence of increased levels (>50 ppm) of nitric acid (HNO3) in the tanks, which attacked the fluoride layer protecting the steel.The oxidation characteristics of high concentrations of HNO3 with low concentrations of HF on stainless steel surface treatment are well documented. The effects of low levels of nitric acid on the corrosion of steels in sulphuric acid are also known, but no suitable published data currently exists on corrosion by high HF concentrations with low HNO3 concentrations. Establishing the rate and mechanism of corrosion by HNO3 (0.1 to 1%) in 70% HF is currently a high priority for the HF industry in South Africa and will become increasingly important in the near future due to depleting fluorite reserves and cheaper, but less efficient, processes producing H2SO4 with higher impurity levels, which were not anticipated in the original plant design. The aim of this study is to simulate the corrosion conditions in the plant on a laboratory scale in order to establish the corrosion characteristics of the steels used in the HF plant, which are increasingly exposed to the HNO3 impurities that tend to concentrate in the final technical-grade HF acid product."

Some years ago, Ferroatlantica developed a new type of electrode known as the ELSA electrode. In this electrode there is a central graphite core that provides support, surrounded by an annulus of Søderberg paste that gets baked during operation. This technology has been implemented on several silicon furnaces around the world, and was reported on during the previous Infacon conference. In all electrodes, but particularly in the ELSA electrode, the quality and consistency of the paste are important for correct operation. As the type of paste varies between customers and between countries, Ferroatlantica has developed a quality control procedure for their customers of this technology. This procedure is geared to the point of view of the customer rather than the paste producer. The analysis is based on the desired flow pattern of the raw paste and on the desired mechanical and electrical properties of the baked paste, as experience has shown that these are the most important parameters to monitor in order to avoid having problems with the resulting electrodes. This paper discusses these methods of paste analysis in the light of complementary studies that have been done when there has been an electrode breakage in the different plants.

In a pulp environment, the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite tend to be similar, due to the re-adsorption of dissolved calcium species, which makes the flotation separation difficult. In this paper, the chelating reagent EDTA is introduced to eliminate the adverse influence of the calcium species and to restore the selectivity of magnesite-dolomite separation using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a depressant. Flotation experiments confirm that the recovery of magnesite improves significantly in the presence of EDTA. Zeta potential experiments confirm that the negatively charged EDTA4+ and HEDTA3+ species can form soluble and stable chelates with positively charged Ca2+ and Ca(OH)+ species preventing their adsorption on the magnesite surface. Adsorption measurements prove the addition of EDTA can decrease the adsorption of depressant SHMP on the magnesite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements further confirm the transformation from the surface of magnesite to dolomite in the presence of calcium ions, and the possible adsorption mechanism of EDTA and SHMP on the magnesite and dolomite surface.
