(e) School and Colloquia Notes The papers from al local schools and colloquia are published and handed out at registration. Should authors wish to have their papers considered for publication in the Journal, they should adhere to the guidelines outlined below.

Ancillary smelter operations and sulphuric acid manufacture at Impala Platinum Limited by R. P. PLASKET. Pr. Eng.. M.Sc. (Chem. Tech.). Natal (Fellow) and D. A. IRELAND. Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. (Chem. Tech.). Natal (Member) The de-watering, spray drying, and converter operations at Impala are described, aspects that may be new to the minerals industry in South Africa being elaborated. Air-pollution control necessitated the installation of a sulphuric acid plant to limit the emission of sulphur dioxide to the atmosphere. Closer control of the smelting and converting operations was required for successful operation of the acid plant on the inherently Iow and varied concentration of feed gas from converter blowing. Approximately 82 per cent of the sulphur entering the smelter is converted to sulphur dioxide, of which 67 per cent is fed into the sulphuric acid plant.

The case for national research in mineral processing PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. E. Robinson*, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits.) Some of you have only raised your eyebrows, some have made tactful comments, and a few of you have been fairly outspoken, but all of you in industry are concerned at the high level of State expenditure by bodies such as the National Institute for Metallurgy. The case for a national research organization in mineral processing is not clear-cut and in fairness I must present both cases - for and against. Competition for student members Each year the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy offers a prize (or prizes should the entries warrant it) of up to Rl00 for the best paper or dissertation on a topic appropriate to the interests of the Institute.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng. (Chemical) Membrane processes are vital to a diverse range of technical and biological systems, which also feature in mineral processing applications such as the treatment of mine effluent and extraction of metals. In this study, the use of cellular automata to model a semi-permeable membrane that separates two compartments is considered. Cellular automata are simple models that enable the analyst to represent well-understood local effects, such as the chemical or steric interaction between molecules themselves and between molecules or particles and their environment, which can lead to very complex behaviour on a macroscopic scale. Various physical phenomena, including reverse osmosis, were simulated. Initial results for the effect of temperature, membrane structure and chemical properties of the solutes on the performance of the membrane appear promising. Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

Slimes-dam construction in the gold mines of the Anglo American Group by w. T. RUHMER. Pr.Eng.. B.Sc. Eng. (Met.) (Fellow) Current practices generally in accordance with the principles of design and operation of slimes dams within the Gold Mining Division of the Anglo American Corporation are described. Although many of the details given are either obvious or have been amply dealt with elsewhere, these have been included for the sake of completeness. The selection of suitable ground for the deposition of slimes, the initial design and construction of a slimes dam, and its consequent operation are presented in logical sequence. Emphasis is placed on the code of practice for the construction of slimes dams issued by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, and draft regulations (Water Act of 1956) dealing with pollution. Operating costs are included, and possible future trends are discussed.

Held on the 22nd March 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented at this colloquium, which was attended by approximately 120 people. The first paper, 'Flotation Research Work at the N.I.M. research group, University of Natal on the modelling of a Flotation Process' was presented by Dr R. P. King, the leader of the N.I.M. Research Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal. A discussion panel, under the chairmanship of Dr R. E. Robinson with Mr M. Dawson (PMC), Mr E. Roux (FOSKOR), and Dr B. K. Loveday (NIM), discussed the potential application of the theoretical work on flotation modelling to industrial processes, and alternative approaches to providing a way of control of flotation plants. The second paper, 'Fundamental Studies of the Flotation Process the Work of the National Institute) for Metallurgy', was presented by Dr N. P. Finkelstein. The discussion panel for this paper was under the chairmanship of Professor D. D. Howat,and had as its members Mr H. P. Carlisle (JCI), Professor D. le Roux (University of Pretoria), and Mr E. Rudolph (Anglo American Research Laboratories). A lively discussion on this paper ensued, with several contributions from the floor. After lunch, Mr S. K. de Kok, Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, Anglo Vaal, presented a paper on 'The Flotation of Copper and Zinc Sulphide from Prieska Ore'. The paper was discussed by a panel comprising Dr V. C. Lovell (NIM), Mr A. Gilbert (General Mining), and Dr D. Legge (Anglo Vaal), under the chairmanship of Dr L. Bushell. This discussion, in which many members of the audience participated, revolved around the difficulties associated with the production of copper and zinc concentrates and the lack of fundamental information on the behaviour of copper and zinc sulphides in flotation. The final presentati0n was a paper, 'The Recovery by Flotation of Cassiterite contained in Gravity Concentration Plant Tailings', presented by Mr E. B. Viljoen (Metallurgy Department, Goldfields South Africa Limited). The discussion, led by a panel consisting of Mr O. Tant (Goldfields Laboratories), Mr J. Levin (NIM), and Mr R. I. Shanks (NIM), under the chairmanship of Mr H. Cross (Goldfields South Africa Limited) referred particularly to the use of new reagents for the flotation of tin, with particular emphasis on the fundamental relationship between reagent composition and its ability to float this type of mineral.

TALKS The Chairman called first on Mr D. E. Couperthwaite to present his paper on 'Heavy media separation' and then on Mr A. F. Leger to present his paper on 'Engineering plastics'. Both presentations, which were illustrated with diagrams, proved of great interest to all members. A vote of thanks to both speakers was proposed by Mr T. Zadkin. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked all present for their attendance and declared the Meeting closed at about 9.30 p.m. Refreshments were then served.

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. Ruhrkohle in West Germany evaluates and compares the net present values of long-term periods from its coal mines by a computer assisted long-term planning system. Two main parts of this system are computer programs for the prediction of: (a) mineable reserves and their distribution in longwall panels as a function of dependent geological variables; (b) daily outputs and costs of longwall panels as a function of dependent geo- logical, layout and operational variables. This paper describes the investigations, which ended in the above computer programs: ? the collection of information from past workings and their organization in databases; ? the statistical evaluation of the databases, and ? the resulting correlation formulas. The correlation formulas vary the mean dependent variables as a function of independent variables which can be indicated with high reliability for planning projects in the long run. The system thus serves the purpose of facilitating long-term planning and excluding biased individual judgement of local planning staffs.

Infacon 74 The National Institute for Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Ferro-Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa extend a cordial invitation to participate in the International Ferro-alloys Congress to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. Obituary RICHARD AUSTIN COOPER On the 31st March 1972, a once very active member of the Institute, R. A. Cooper, died at the age of 82. He had served on the Council for many years and was Vice-President in 1933/34. ALEXANDER JEREMIAH ORENSTEIN CB., CM.G., C.B.E., LLD., D.Se., M.D., M.R.C.S., F.R.CP., F.R.S.H. Dr Orenstein, who died on the 7th July 1972 at the age of 92, was so well known and so widely acclaimed during his lifetime that it is difficult to add to the tributes which have already been paid to him.

(Illinois) (Genoot) Although the industrial physiologist can still be regarded as a rarity in South African industry, it is obvious that he could make a positive contribution to the control of air pollution. For the past twenty-two years, the gold-mining industry has invoked the aid of industrial physiologists in solving various problems that continually crop up in the more effective and safer utilization of man-power. Air pollution is only one facet that has received attention. It can be stated emphatically that other industries could gain many advantages from the employment of this type of specialist. Because of inadequate opportunities for academic training, however, the industrial physiologists available might not be enough to fill all the possible posts in industry at present, but confidence is expressed that interested persons will soon be able to follow a full university course in this field of study.

Prediction of the performance of explosives In bench mining by C. M. LOWNDS, B.Se. Hons (Rhodes), Ph.D (Cape) (Visitor) Some of the problems encountered in the calculation of the relative weight strength of explosives are discussed, and a realistic model of the behaviour of explosion products in a borehole is proposed. The heat flow from condensed to gaseous products is calculated as a function of time, and the relationship between the pressure and the volume of the product gases is found by a consideration of the compression of the rock between radial cracks. Work done on the burden is assumed to cease when the cracks first appear at the face. Reasonable values of burden and crack velocities are obtained from the model. Calculations of the relative weight strengths of aluminized mixtures of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil show that the increased density resulting from the addition of aluminium is the main advantage to be gained.
