Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes become available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60%-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none-sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as uneconomic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterized by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25%-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18%-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating costs, and offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously debottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. "Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. Tasked with developing a flow sheet for a new resource, one typically turns the experts for help. The advice of an expert can be invaluable in reducing the time and costs associated with characterizing an ore (not to mention extracting maximum information from limited samples). While guiding and optimizing a metallurgical concept study requires a certain skill set, selling a project is something different. The metallurgical specialist is usually not responsible for sharing the results of investigations with potential investors. However, the person responsible for selling the project can ensure that a metallurgical concept study is conducted thoroughly and responsibly without having the ability to do the work, while being sufficiently familiar with the metallurgical aspects to authoritatively sell the project. The process of identifying suitable process routes through to constructing a concept flow sheet and mass balance is discussed as a basic example. From basic mineralogical information and a thorough literature survey, the most likely beneficiation routes can be identified and targeted testing conducted. The final top size will depend on the required product properties (mainly grade), the selected beneficiation technology, and the ore?s liberation properties. Once the required top size has been identified, comminution options can be evaluated. Once again, literature surveys can be used to supplement concept-level comminution property information, and select possible equipment and circuit configurations. Marketing, material handling, and logistics-related information can be used to determine required dewatering technologies. At this stage, enough information is available to develop a concept mass balance and conduct basic equipment sizing..

Production caving started for Lift 2 at Northparkes in August 2004. In a period of less than 3 months, more than 10 000 seismic events were recorded. Events up to local magnitude +2.9 were induced near the mine during caving, with event rates of up to 500 per day. This paper documents the seismicity related to cave initiation and cave propagation during the initial production of Lift 2. The seismogenic zone of events initially moved at a rate of about 0.5 metres per day, accelerating to 2 to 3 metres per day after a few months of cave production. Seismic data analysis infers that the crown pillar between Lift 1 and Lift 2 was destressed over a vertical height of about 100 metres. As the seismogenic zone approached the crown pillar, a macroseismic episode occurred, with more than 20 events of at least local magnitude +1 occurring in a two-week period. Based on the seismicity recorded for Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines, a caving mechanics model is proposed. Comments and suggestions are made for seismic data analysis and design of seismic monitoring systems in block caving mines.

This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

The Alusaf aluminium smelter at Richards Bay by H. T. KAISER, B.Sc. (Pta), M.B.L. (Unisa) (Visitor) and P. DE WAAL, B.Sc., B.lng. (Mech.) (Stell.) (Visitor) A description is given of the aluminium smelter at Richards Bay, which operates on the Hall-Heroult electrolysis principle. The annual output of metal (average 99,7 per cent aluminium) is approximately 7S 000 tons. Since its commissioning in 1971, the plant has fulfilled South Africa's total demand for low-alloy rolling slabs, extrusion billets, remelt ingots, and electrical conductor rod. The plant layout allows for sufficient expansion of its capacity to meet longterm increases in demand.

Several aspects of the behaviour and properties of backfills consisting of cemented cyclone underflow tailings are illustrated by means of examples, and guidelines are given on the optimization of the performance of cemented fills. The stretch characteristics of the geofabric used to contain freshly placed backfill are described, as well as the relationship between these characteristics and the forces acting on retaining barricades. The properties required to achieve a self-supporting, stable free face in cemented backfill are explored, and a graphic relationship between stable height and shear strength is presented and compared with that for uncemented (classified) tailings. After a description of the characteristics of Witwatersrand quartzite gold-tailings backfill and commonly used cements, the process of drainage and air entry into backfill is outlined. Following this, the early-age gain in strength and the shear-strength characteristics, as well as the compressibility characteristics of cemented backfill, are described. Two phenomena that are potentially damaging to cemented backfill are seismic effects (or blasting acceleration) and the closure that takes place during the curing of cement. Investigations show that neither of these phenomena is actually significantly deleterious to gold-tailings backfill: liquefaction does not Occur as a result of seismicity, and hydration of cemented fill is not significantly impeded by closure.

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

"In the case of feasibility assessments or feasibility studies, an important point of discussion is often how to calculate the capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) of a plant. Generally, there is also the request to know how the CAPEX varies when the size of the plant is increased. Nowadays, many databases give an indication of specific equipment costs in relation to the production rate. These data are based on cost information from equipment suppliers and have to be continuously updated by the owner of the database. The approach presented here is a model which allows sizing of process equipment, for example a leach tank, based on process data in combination with the calculation of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it calculates the CAPEX based on construction material cost and adequate machining surcharges. Thus, a single cost model for a leach tank is adequate for both copper and other hydrometallurgical plants and stays valid with changing construction material prices. To summarize, the advantage of this model is the more versatile approach and thus the flexibility due to the inclusion of design aspects, process and mechanical engineering aspects and an updatable database. The database, which is in regard to material cost and is the basis for the cost estimation, is easily updatable from commonly accessible data. This model thus approaches the procedures of an engineering company when designing a plant and executing a cost calculation. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgy nowadays plays an important role in processing of primary and secondary resources. In copper metallurgy, hydrometallurgy accounts for roughly 20 % of worldwide primary production, especially in the case of oxide or low copper-containing ores. Zinc smelters changed their method of production from a pyrometallurgical-dominated concept decades ago to mainly hydrometallurgical routes today. Gold production processes using leaching, especially, have a long history without any development which would not be competitive if not based on hydrometallurgical concepts (Pawlek, 1983; Winnacker-Küchler, 2006)."

In the 21st century, dynamic, accurate digital 3-D geological models are essential to the pursuit of safe, efficient and profitable mining. This is particularly true for the deep-level underground mines in South Africa. The Sirovision® solution is a collaboration project between the Australian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Datamine Software Ltd. and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AGA). The purpose of the project is to provide a fully integrated digital rock face imaging, geological mapping and modelling system for the AGA gold mining operations. The CSIRO-developed Sirovision® Stereo Camera Rig (SCR) consists of two digital cameras, alighting system, a laser guidance system and image processing software. The imaging system works on the principles of photogrammetry, i.e. overlaying of two 2-D images with a central focus point, with mathematical algorithms extracting 3-D information from the 2-D image pair. The output from matching several image pairs is a computer-generated, full 3-D, virtual copy of the mining excavation. The image resolution and relief ares of sufficient quality to distinguish different rock types and structural contacts. Functionality within Datamine Studio3 is used to add geological intelligence to the 3-D images provided by Sirovision®. The geologist identifies and ?draws? lines representing geological features directly onto the image. By utilizing the inherent ?topography? of the 3-D image, the software is able to convert the lines into 3-D surfaces, ready for use in the 3-D geological model. Subsequent to promising underground test results from AGA?s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) in Australia and other mining operations worldwide, it was decided to test the Sirovision® system in the South African deep-level gold mines. The first underground tests at Moab Khotsong Mine began in January 2009. The objectives of these tests entailed the capturing of 3-D images of selected development ends, mapping of geological features onto the 3-D images and integration of the mapping data with the 3-D geological model. Some downsides have cropped up during the feasibility testing, related to practicality of the SCR for acquisition of 3-Dimagery in the deep-level underground operating environment. These constraints will have to be addressed prior to operational implementation. Facing such difficulties is not unusual when attempting to implement new technology in such a challenging working environment and testwork is still in progress at the mine in order to prove the concept of using this technology in a Witwatersrand underground gold mine. The great advantage of the Sirovision® solution is that it offers the geologist the opportunity to work remotely on a 3-D virtual copy of a mining excavation, without the heat, humidity, hazards and time constraints associated with physical mapping in an underground workplace.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal ore body, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralisation has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been sub-divided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 pothole facies, FW3pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralisation. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralisation located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the ore body. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situgrades estimated as an input to the mine planning process

The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

The b-solidifying g-TiAl intermetallic alloys of nominal composition Ti-48Al (binary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb (ternary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr (quaternary alloy), and Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr-0.3Si (quinary alloy) (in at.%) were developed. The materials produced were tensile tested at room temperature. The as-cast microstructures and fracture surfaces of the tensile tested specimens were examined using conventional metallographic methods. Microstructural examination indicated that the alloys were comprised of lamellar structures (a2+g) embedded in columnar dendritic cores in the as-cast condition. However, the quinary alloy contained a Ti5Si3 second phase. The alloys exhibited no detectable ductility during tensile deformation, indicating the brittleness of all the materials. The fracture surfaces revealed that the alloys failed by translamellar fracture with correspondingly few cleavage facets.

In order to remove heavy metal ions from a large volume of wastewater with a low ion concentration, ion flotation appears to be promisingly effective. In the ion flotation process, because of the high ion removal percentage, the amount of water recovery percentage is a very important factor which determines the process efficiency. However, ion flotation suffers from relatively high collector concentration to achieve the high removal percentage to the desired limit, which subsequently increases the water recovery. In this study, functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesised, using a chemical method in the ion flotation process, applied as a collector for increasing process efficiency by reducing the collector consumption and water recovery. The high ion removal was achieved with both collectors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and FGO, while the water recovery with a collector of SDS was 3.4% higher than that with a collector of FGO. The results indicated that the FGO could be effectively used for high ion removal and low water recovery in the ion flotation process. To achieve maximum efficiency in any purification stage, the flotation should be continued until the concentrate grade reaches the feed grade. During sampling from rougher cells of the Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper concentrator plant 1, it was revealed that the concentrate grade of the last five cells of rougher circuit was close to feed grade. Therefore, it was suggested that the concentrate of the aforementioned cells be mixed with rougher feed. In this study, one of eight rougher circuit rows was selected and evaluated. The floatability tests were performed to compare the flotation behaviour of rougher feed and mixture of concentrate of the last five cells with rougher feed in the laboratory scale by a tree analysis process. The results showed that mixing of rougher last five cell concentrate with feed has a detrimental effect on flotation efficiency that leads to a 3% decrease in recovery. Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. A challenge in mine planning is the optimal allocation of resources to the appropriate workplaces within the shift cycle (labour, equipment type, and other resources) in order to carry out the shift cycle activities, achieve planned production targets, and ultimately maximize production within all infrastructure constraints. Generally, detailed mine planning is done on a monthly basis at a workplace level in order to determine the production targets. The production supervisor, mine overseer, or equivalent production manager must then make the appropriate resource allocation trade-off decisions on a daily basis per shift to try and deliver to the plan and required production target. Due to the complexity and number of permutations of possible resource allocation decisions, it is impossible for a human brain to make the appropriate and optimal allocation decisions that will result in achieving the maximum or target production. These allocation decision permutations must deal with the current status of workplaces (availability, position in the cycle etc.), the status of equipment availability (available, planned maintenance, or breakdown etc.), distance between the workplaces (traveling time of equipment between workplaces, etc.) and equipment type required for that shift cycle activity. All these factors need to be taken into account in resource allocation to plan for the shift, and even during the shift if a major piece of equipment becomes unavailable or a workplace activity is not progressing as planned. This paper is a case study on how an optimization algorithm can be used to create a production planning system for optimization of resource allocation in a mechanized underground platinum operation. A business case for optimal allocation of resources is demonstrated and compared to the current manual planned allocation.

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) performed a macroseismic investigation following the occurrence of an earthquake in the Boksburg area on 11 June 2023. The event had a magnitude of ML 4.4 and a focal mechanism that showed the event as having strike-slip motion along a northwest-southeast oriented fault. The event resulted in aftershocks, some of which occurred away from the causative fault in the east in an area without a mapped fault. However, the cluster of past events in that area suggests that there is an active fault. Due to the size of the main earthquake, a macroseismic survey was conducted to determine its impact on the community in the region. Analysis of observed data obtained from questionnaires resulted in the creation of 153 intensity data points. Their distribution showed high intensity values close to the earthquake source area. However, the investigation highlighted a number of anomalies, such as the higher than expected intensity values observed far from the event epicentre. It could be that these anomalies are caused by site conditions, for example, amplification of ground motion due to thick soil layers.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. In multivariate geostatistics, it is common to have different types of complexities between variables of interest. In this context, an inequality constraint is an example of complex bivariate relationships. Unfortunately, traditional co-kriging and co-simulation algorithms cannot reproduce this type of bivariate complexity, leading to the overestimation of disturbing elements. This paper proposes a new algorithm based on a hierarchical sequential Gaussian co-simulation framework, integrated with inverse transform sampling, to model inequality constraints between variables. First, the proposed methodology's validity was evaluated by applying it to a real case study from an iron deposit, with an inequality constraint between iron and aluminum oxide. Then the simulated results were compared with a conventional hierarchical co-simulation algorithm to investigate the effect of inverse transform sampling on the quality of the co-simulation. The results showed that the proposed algorithm can reproduce an inequality constraint between variables.
