Packing in a flotation column is one way to increase separation efficiency and effective descending flotation-column height. In this paper, the difference between filling packing and sieve packing is described, and the flaws of filling packing in flotation columns in industrial application are pointed out. A change of flotation process and its effect on flotation results are reported. Based on sieve-plate filling, a high-efficiency mixed packing mode consisting of screen-plate packing and honeycomb-tube packing has been proposed, with the packing mode optimized in the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column in the separation zone. In the mixed packing mode, the honeycomb tubes are used to reduce the vortex effect at the base of the column and weaken the radial dispersion of jetting bubbles, and the sieve plates are used to comminute bubbles in the separation zone, to lengthen the bubble migration path, and to stabilize the foam layer. The superiority of honeycomb-tube packing is analyzed using bubble-particle collision theory, and the dynamic equations of collision probability are derived. The role of mixed packing in guaranteeing mineral recovery is analyzed by the axial dispersion method, and a dimensionless axial dispersion model is derived. When a high-turbulence flow is maintained, a static separation environment is formed in which secondary mineral processing is rendered more effective. In this way, a nonlinear separation environment is formed in the flotation column. Finally, mixed packing was applied in an industrial test. A large vortex developed at the base of the column. It was observed that the bubbles in the radial flow were homogeneously dispersed, the residence time of the pulp was prolonged, and the froth layer became thick and stable. Based on the test data, it was found that the sieve packing has the potential to yield a product of approximately 25.83% copper concentration with 91.78% recovery from a feed concentration of approximately 0.727%. If mixed packing were used, the product concentration could be further increased to 27.60% from a feed of approximately 0.739% concentration with 93.38% recovery.

This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

"The effect of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) on flotation separation of fluorite from bastnaesite and its selectively depression mechanism on fluorite were studied by single mineral flotation, artificial mixed minerals flotation, solution chemistry analyses, Zeta potential and XPS measurements.The results show that fluorite can be deeply depressed by EDTA while the flotation of bastnaesite is almost unaffected when octanohydroxamic acid (OHA) is used as a collector. The separation index (SI) between bastnaesite and fluorite increases with the dosage of EDTA, SI can be raised from 1.18 to 12.66 when EDTA dosage increases from 0 to 2×10-3mol/L.Solution chemistry analyses show that EDTA is able to convert the Ca(OHA)2 hydrophobic precipitation on fluorite surface to a soluble Ca-EDTA complex but cannot complexly dissolve the Ce(OHA)3 precipitation on bastnaesite surface. Therefore, the Zeta potential of OHA conditioned fluorite can be reduced significantly by EDTA while the reduction degree to Zeta potential of bastnaesite is relatively low. XPS measurement shows that EDTA removes the chemically adsorbed OHA from fluorite surface but has little effect on the adsorbed OHA on bastnaesite surface. As a result, fluorite can be selectively depressed by EDTA in bastnaesite flotation, which behaves an important industrial application prospect in rare earth ore flotation.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, Rare earth elements (shortened as RE) and compounds are of significant importance for a range of rapidly expanding industrial applications including catalysis, metallurgy, renewable energy, and special materials due to their unique electrical, magnetic, optical and chemical properties [1]. The seventeen RE elements, including the lanthanide-group fifteen elements, yttrium and scandium, could be divided into three groups, i.e., light, medium and heavy RE elements based on the different solubility of RE sulfates [2]. Bastnaesite ((Ce,La)CO3), containing approximately 75% REO, is one of the most important light RE minerals [3]. Flotation is the common method to recover basetnaesite [4-6]. Nonetheless, basetnaesite is often associated with calcium-bearing gangue minerals such as fluorite, and the separation of basetnaesite and fluorite by flotation is usually difficult due to their similar surface properties and therefore floatability [7-9]. Therefore, research on high selective flotation reagents of bastnaesite over gangue minerals has attracted a lot of attention [10]."

"Over the last 30 years the average grade of mined ore bodies has significantly decreased while the proportion of waste removal has in many cases more than doubled. This has been identified as prime reason of a major increase in energy consumption and decrease in productivity across mining operation. Metal coarse preconcentration of ROM feed grades by size rejects low grade gangue/waste material in the size range of 10-100 mm prior to grinding, typically before primary crushing. This relies on propensity of metal to preferentially deport in the fine size fractions after breakage. Metal preconcentration by size has the potential to increase energy efficiency and therefore improve mining productivity on unit of metal basis. Results of an extensive belt cut sampling campaign conducted at a major Australian Au-Cu mine operation show that for some samples between 90% of Au and 80% of Cu is in 40% of the mass at -50 mm fraction. This indicates that low grade coarse material can be removed from the circuit, doubling feed grade at half of the tonnage and therefore improve energy efficiency per unit metal produced. This response, however presents significant variability in the same order as other processing attributes such as impact hardness and flotation recovery. This has led to development of geometallurgical laboratory tests using blast hole chips and drill core facilitating mapping and population of coarse metal preconcentration signatures in long term resources and short term production models. Preferential Cu deportment by size at drilling scale can be recognised, however scales up factors are required to transform laboratory results to production responses. At 50 % of mass the drilling products underestimate the belt cut responses by 20-30 %. Bulk sampling campaign with blast hole and drill core samples spatially related was also conducted to investigate in more detail the difference between production scale and drilling scale preconcentration responses."

Conventionally, beneficiation in Indian coal washeries is done using dense medium cyclones upto the size of 0.5 mm. Coal fines below 0.5 mm size are extensively cleaned by froth flotation. There are many problems associated with flotation of Indian coals, e.g. poor response of coal particles to flotation, misplacement of fine high-ash material to froth, loss of good quality coarser coals (within ?0.5 mm size range) to tailing streams, high cost of reagents, water contamination, etc. In addition, sophisticated control systems for efficient management of the fines washing circuits are needed. Thus, there is an escalation in the capital and processing costs. In view of these facts, studies were carried out to establish the cleaning potential of dense medium cyclones for beneficiation of fine coal down to a size of 0.1 mm, essentially aimed at reducing the load on fine coal circuits mainly comprising of flotation. ROM Coal (in the size range of -2 + 0.1 mm) obtained from JogtaOCM,Jharia coalfield possessing relatively low ash (about 21%) was used in this study. Purpose for using low ash coal was to further lower, its ash content down to 8% which is comparable, to the ash content of imported coal. After characterization studies, nine tests were carried out on the prepared feed sample for its beneficiation using a dense medium cyclone of non-conventional design (very low cone angle and longer barrel), by varying its apex and vortex finder diameters. The efficiency of separation has been evaluated using Tromp curves. It could be established that it is possible to produce a clean coal of 8% ash, with Ep value of 0.044, using Jogta OCM coal by treating it in a modified dense medium cyclone. The stability of foams and froth plays an important role in flotation, in which small amounts of relatively weak non-ionic surfactants (frothers) are used to produce air bubbles and foams. In the present work, factors affecting the stability of the foams produced in the presence of common frothers, such as n-pentanol, n-octanol, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG), have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Schelud-ko-Exerowa type to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses. The results were used to determine the contributions from the various surface forces to the disjoining pressures in the thin lamellae (foam) films formed between air bubbles. In addition, we used a model developed by Wang and Yoon (Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochem. Eng. Aspects, 2006) to calculate the elasticities of the lamellae films at the critical thicknesses at which films rupture. The surface forces and elasticity da-ta were then compared with the foam stabilities in the presence of the various flotation frothers. It was found that foam stabilities are controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces, the relative contributions of which change with frother type and concentration. In general, surface forces play a more important role at relatively low frother concentrations, while elasticity plays a more important role at higher concentrations. At the frother additions usually employed in the mining industry, MIBC relies on surface forces while PPG-400 relies on film elasticity in producing stable foams. The former is capable of dampening the hydrophobic force, which is a major attractive force destabilizing lamellae films, while the latter is capable of reducing surface tensions at low concentrations.

Large quantities of electrical and electronic equipments are discarded at the end-of-life (EOL) in different industries and house hold applications. Their disposal is creating a challenging environmental problem due to the presence of hazardous metals and non-metallic materials such as epoxy resins and plastics including brominated flame retardants etc particularly in printed circuit boards (PCBs). The recovery valuable metals and separation of hazardous materials from discarded PCBs will not only conserve the resources but also mitigate the environmental pollution. From a recycling point of view for a sustainable society, the studies have been carried out for the recovery of metal values from EOL-PCBs of DVD video players (DVD-PCBs) and vacuum cleaners (VC-PCBs) using physical beneficiation techniques. The concentration of the metals was found to be 43 wt.% and 30 wt.% in DVD-PCBs and VC-PCBs, respectively. Both the PCBs samples were ground in a hammer mill after cutting and their size analysis was carried out. The liberation of the metallic and non-metallic fractions was investigated under the microscope for different size fractions. Subsequently, froth flotation and pneumatic air separation studied were carried out to enrich the metallic constituents. The studies showed the enrichment of metals in coarser particles (-1000 +150 µm) and non-metals in the finer particles -150 µm following mechanical recycling process. A grade of 90 % with 75% recovery was achieved by froth flotation, but lower grade and recovery of 75% and 65% respectively were obtained by pneumatic separation with -1500 µm powders for DVD-PCBs. A grade of 86% metal was obtained by froth flotation with 76% recovery in the case of VC-PCBs. The lower grade of 65% with almost same recovery was achieved during pneumatic separation studies due to lower concentration of metals in VC-PCBs. The studies also showed that the froth flotation is an efficient process for enrichment of metals from both the samples. The process is environmental friendly as no chemicals are employed during entire processing. The higher recovery and grade of metal is expected to be obtained on a large scale beneficiation process.

"Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

By means of natural sedimentation, two different bentonite samples from Shandong province were purified, this paper studies the Hydro-properties of the two purified montmorillonite samples. Firstly, the layer charge of two purified montmorillonite samples were calculated by crystal structure formula reckon method and general hydro-properties were also measured. The research results showed that the layer charge of montmorillonite correlated well with its hydro-properties: mont-morillonite with lower layer charge had better hydro-properties, such as Mont-1, which had higher swelling volume and gelling value with lower CEC; while, montmorillonite with higher layer charge had worse hydro-properties, such as Mont-2, which had lower swell volume and gelling value with higher CEC; it proves that the hydro-properties of montmorillonite depends on its layer charge characteristics, layer charge characteristic is the inherent factors deciding the hydro-properties of montmorillonite, montmorillonite with lower layer charge has better hydro-properties than the one with higher layer charge. In this paper, the relation between the medium condition and colloid performance of Mont-1 are also studied. The results show that the hydro-properties of Mont-1 could be changed by changing slurry concentration (w/w) and shear rate or adding certain amounts of inorganic cation electrolytes, dispersants and surfactants. The viscosity of montmorillonite slurry could be enhanced by increasing slurry concentration,adding univalentcation electrolytes (less than 4% w/w) or proper amounts of dispersants and surfactants (less than critical micelle concentration); The slurry viscosity could be reduced by decreasing slurry concentration, increasing shear rate, adding proper bivalent (more than 4% w/w) cation electrolytes or proper quantities of dispersants and surfactants (more than critical micelle concentration).

Coal preparation plants usually operate with water in a closed circuit mode. In this practice, large quantities of water is continuously being recycled. To compensate the natural losses, only small quantity of fresh make up water is added into the circuit. As a result, a gradual build up of residual concentrations of flotation reagents (frothers, collectors, coagulates etc.) take place in the water and the concentration levels of the contaminants increase. Besides, the recycled water accumulates higher amounts of total dissolved components (1600 ppm) and hardness (740 ppm) than the fresh water. Nearly 80 ? 85% of the process water used in a coal preparation plant is utilized in treating the coal fines in flotation circuit. The presence of certain alkali earth metal ions (e.g., Ca++, Mg++) may adversely affect the flotation performance as they precipitate sparingly soluble hydroxyl complexes on the coal surface and change its surface charge. These studies showed that the use of recycled water in flotation has a significant effect on the selectivity and kinetics of the flotation process because, the dissolved compounds, both inorganic and organic, alter the chemistry radically. By treating the recycled water through a softening process, the concentrations of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced significantly. The concentration of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced to 10 ppm and 35 ppm respectively in the softened recycle water. From the selectivity studies, it has been observed that the flotation yield and recoveries increased by four to seven units by softening the recycled water. The kinetic studies indicated that the clean coal particles followed first-order kinetics. The kinetic parameters namely, flotation rate constant (k) and maximum recoveries (R8) of flotation, were found higher with softened recycle water than the recycled water. This reduces the residence time in the flotation cell and thereby, increases its productivity. SHP-F3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) was successfully used to separate the complex and weakly magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Ji-uquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd (JISCO). It is more and more difficult to separate iron ores from gangues, such as quartz, jasperite and phyllite, as the properties of iron ores gradually become more complicated and refractory. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-F3200 HIMS, including modifying angle of magnetic polar from 90°to 83°, cooling exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing device to wash off magnetic particles, adjusting the tooth-space of matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm, so as to enhance the recovery of fine iron ore particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly-separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In this paper, after analyzing magnetic force exerting on iron ore particles within different separating sections of SHP HIMS, it is proposed to apply the flowing-film technique into the HIMS. Thus a new-type LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically, combined with a special flowing-film feeder to improve the existing SHP HIMS. The moving pattern of magnetic particles in pulp in HIMS separation district also has been analyzed in this paper. And the test on the SHP-F700 HIMS shows, under the condition of iron ore containing 30.52% Fe, with particle size of ?0.074 mm accounting for around 75%, if applied with flow-film technique, the iron recovery will be up from 69.45% to 76.07%, by 6.62 percent, with the same grade of concentrates of iron. The calculation of iron yield of every size fraction and the tests showed that film magnetic separation (Film-MS) could promote the iron yield of each size fraction, denoting an excellent result of application of the film technique to SHP HIMS. The mechanism of the film magnetic separation technique is to convert the turbulent flow and disordered movement of dynamic mass particles in the pulp into a directional and ordered laminar flow along the surface of tooth plate so as to strengthen the separation effects.

Taknar polymetal (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag-Pb) deposit and concentration flotation plant are located in the northeast of Iran. The flotation feed contains Chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite with 4, 4 and 8 percent respectively. Cu and Zn contents are 1.26 and 3.5 present. Pyrite decreases the quality of base metal concentrates and increases the amount of sulfur compounds produced in the base metal extraction processes. Therefore, depression of pyrite is essential in the concentration of base metal sulfides by flotation. For flotation tests, 4 mixed collector systems, MIBC (20g/t), lime and tow depression systems (sodium cyanide (60g/t)-zinc sulphate and dextrin (300g/t)-zinc sulphate) were used as collector, frother, pH regulator and pyrite-sphalerite depressants in the chalcopyrite flotation stage, respectively, and SIPX, MIBC, lime and copper sulphate (as activator) were used in sphalerite flotation from first stage tailings. The results have shown that, sodium cyanide is a suitable depressant for pyrite and sphalerite in the first stage of flotation. Compared to dextrin as depressant, chalcopyrite recovery was decreased approximately 1.83%. In addition, when sodium cyanide was used as pyrite depressant, copper sulphate consumption raised approximately 90 g/t for activation of sphalerite. From Environment and HSE points of view, dextrin is natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic while cyanide is very high toxic. The adsorption and stabilization of mineral dispersed systems by using Pluronic copolymers with different molecular weights and EO content has been studied. The role of sequential adsorption of EO-PO copolymers and cationic surfactant (CTAB) on the carbonate particle properties and in determining the stability of their suspension was studied with particular attention to the conformation of the polymer at the solid-liquid interface. The purpose of this work was to investigate the flocculation phenomena, influence of polymer molecular size on stability of suspensions of magnesite and dolomite and the effect of addition mode of polymer and surfactant. The suspension stability measurements and the determination of sedimentation speed were carried out using an optical analyser (Turbiscan). In most of investigated cases, the biggest floccs and the fastest sedimentation were found for low concentrations of copolymers.

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

"This paper contains description of research results of technology development for copper recovery from weathered tails of iron processing plant. The predominant host mineral that contains valuable component is chalcopyrite occurring in its free form and in associations with ore and rock-forming minerals. Copper grade is 0.26-0.30%. Emulsion inclusions of chalcopyrite in pyrite and sphalerite were noted. Major problem is low copper recovery (30-35%) by flotation. When studying chalcopyrite in primary concentrate it was determined that the surfaces of many chalcopyrite grains are covered with oxide films which prevented collector attachment onto them. Second issue was deep association of chalcopyrite with pyrite and sphalerite. Sulfidizing reagent addition did not help to reach the required level of copper recovery to concentrate. In the result of research performed the technological flowsheet was developed including preliminary treatment of head material in a special unit aiming at oxide films removal, followed by copper rougher flotation on head size tails, crude concentrate regrinding and a number of cleaner flotation operations. After the treatment of weathered tails according to the flowsheet developed, copper recovery to flotation concentrate became 71.53%, at 23.46% copper grade. The suggested technology allows one to solve the issue with treatment of technology-related copper-containing stockpile material, as well as to include the ores where copper is represented by sulfide minerals covered with oxide films into processing."

Cuprous oxide is one of the oldest antifouling agents and also acts as red pigment in these paints. In printed circuit board manufacturing industries, waste etchant contains a substantial amount of copper ion. In the present study, a process was suggested for recovering cuprous oxides from the waste etchant and optimum conditions were investigated to recover the cuprous oxides. The process consists of two steps: in first step, Cu powder is added into wastewater solution, and cupric ions re-duce into cuprous ions (Cu+Cu2+?2Cu+), where cuprous ions precipitate as cuprous chloride; In second step, cuprous oxide is synthesized by adding NaOH into cuprous chloride solution (2CuCl+2NaOH?Cu2O+NaCl+H2O). Optimum conditions were investigated to recover cuprous oxide in the processes. When copper powder was added into wastewater with copper ions, Cu concentration decreased from 15.6% to 2.6% and ORP decreased from 620 mV to -59.9 mV. This result shows that cupric ions reduced into cuprous ions. XRD data indicated that the precipitate was cuprous chloride powder. Using the cuprous chloride recovered and NaOH solution, cuprous oxide was synthesized. To investigate the optimum condition, various NaOH solutions were added into water with CuCl, and then pH, ORP, Cu concentration, Cu contents in precipitates were analysed. XRD data showed that main component of precipitates was cuprous oxide.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. Stirred milling of laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on a siliceous goethitic (SG) nickel laterite sample (-2000 µm particle size) to evaluate the effect of operating conditions such as stirrer speed, grinding time, pH, solid content, water salinity and charge volume. The target was to produce a -38 µm fraction in the milling product with high nickel recovery and grade. Addition of dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate) was also optimized with respect to the rheology of the slurry. In terms of stress intensity, the optimum grinding conditions for selective size reduction were: 1000 rpm, 50 per cent charge volume. At higher stress intensity (2000 rpm), Ni recovery in the -38 µm product was higher, but Ni grade was low, due to the breakage of the harder siliceous particles. Decreasing the yield stress by modifying slurry pH or adding dispersant improved the rheological properties of the pulp, but had no great influence on Ni upgrade in the fine product. Modifying water salinity by adding 2 M NaCl had also little effect. The breakage of the +38 µm particles in the feed determined Ni upgrade greatly. Ni grade in the -38 µm product decreased with grinding time, suggesting that the Ni-bearing minerals break first, while the harder siliceous minerals have a lower breakage rate. The breakage rates with respect to sample mass for Ni, Mg and Si indicate that: Mg > Ni > Mass > Si. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min. The Ni grade increased from 0.88 per cent to 1.35 per cent (upgrade 54 per cent), with 24 per cent Ni recovery. Keywords: fine grinding, stirred media mill, nickel laterite, slurry rheology

Efficient enrichment of high-carbon low-grade mica stone coal containing vanadium is a key problem in the mineral processing field, and the mature beneficiation process is yet to be developed and applied. In this paper, a special mineral mica type of stone coal containing vanadium from Tongshan, Hubei Province, China was selected as the research object. Chemical analysis results show that this mineral contains V2O5 0.71%, SiO2 49.28%, C 13.44%, and CaO 6.26%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that vanadium generally exists in all kinds of mica minerals in 20 µm to 50 µm fractions. Mica stone coal containing vanadium must be ground to a particular fineness (approximately 45 µm). To reduce acid consumption during vanadium extraction from stone coal through acid leaching, a pretreatment process was proposed to enrich micas by using shaking table and flotation methods. A new combined technology process was implemented, resulting in a 0.96% improvement in the vanadium grade of raw materials in the succeeding process. Vanadium losses were controlled to 4.57% through the pre-concentration process, which reduced the burden of the subsequent procedure. The content of high acid consuming minerals was also diminished, such that approximately 6612 CNY was saved from producing 1 t V2O5. Therefore, stone coal containing vanadium should be pre-concentrated by using an appropriate combined process to reduce costs.

India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. The process technology adopted and modified to suit the altered requirements as well as the future trends are outlined.
